Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the moderating role of debt financing in the relationship between intellectual capital (IC) and small and medium enterprise (SME) performance in high-tech and low-tech industries.

Design/methodology/approach

This longitudinal study uses a balanced panel sample of 7,293 (3,563 high-tech and 3,730 low-tech) SMEs in Southwestern European countries from 2013 to 2020. The data are analyzed using a fixed-effect model as baseline estimation, and a generalized method of moments estimation is used for robustness checks.

Findings

The results show strong positive effects of human capital (HC) and structural capital (SC) and a weak effect of capital employed (CE), on the performance of high-tech SMEs. Debt financing is negatively and significantly associated with SME performance, and the moderating effect of debt financing is more significant in low-tech industries. Specifically, debt financing accentuates (attenuates) the positive effect of HC (SC and CE) on the performance of low-tech SMEs.

Practical implications

This study offers a valuable framework for managers and policymakers when considering the role of debt financing in the IC components – SME performance relationship in distinctive industrial environments.

Originality/value

This study provides new insights into the close and complex relationships between IC components, debt financing and SME performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The research examines how behavioral intentions, as a higher-order construct, indirectly affect financial inclusion through service trust, usage behavior and financial literacy in mobile money adoption.

Design/methodology/approach

Following the positivist research philosophy, a cross-sectional study design was used to collect data through questionnaires comprised of scales adapted from prior studies. With a usable sample size of 340 respondents, this study employs partial least squares structural equation modeling to assess the model.

Findings

The study revealed the significant indirect role of behavioral intention on financial inclusion through use behavior, behavioral intentions on use behavior through service trust, and use behavior on financial inclusion through financial literacy. The role of behavioral intentions on financial inclusion through serial mediation of service trust, use behavior and financial literacy was also found to be significant.

Originality/value

This study's novelty resides in examining the indirect relationship between behavioral intentions and financial inclusion, specifically via the serial mediation of service trust, use behavior and financial literacy.

Abstract

Purpose

There is an emerging paradigm with reference to marketing communication, i.e. inclusive marketing communication (IMC). This calls for brands to be sincere with their customers and give due recognition and representation to underrepresented groups, communities and individuals. In this constantly evolving and globalized world, consumers have become more sensitive towards authentic portrayals of inclusivity and diversity by brands while choosing one brand over another.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed method approach was used whereas in the first study, a quantitative method was used. Standardized questionnaire was used for collecting data through a time-lagged method. While the second study adopted the qualitative method. Semi-structured interviews were performed which lasted for 30–45 min for most of the participants.

Findings

It was found that IMC has a positive and noticeable effect on brand attitude (BA) and brand love (BL) when mediated by social identity (SI). While stigmatization was found to positively and significantly moderate the relationship between IMC and SI. Moreover, it was also found from both the studies that if a brand fails to strengthen the SI of an individual it doesn’t affect the BA as well as BL of customers.

Originality/value

Very few studies have incorporated a quantitative method of study while studying IMC. Furthermore, a collective study on different aspects of inclusivity like ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, physical attractiveness, etc., has not been explored yet. Scattered studies on aspects like skin tone, body size, religion, etc., have been explored individually in prior studies.

Abstract

Purpose

Little study has focused on diversity-oriented leadership in the context of public organizations. Thus, this study aims to investigate how diversity-oriented leadership impacts knowledge sharing through transparent internal communication. In addition, this study also explores the moderating role of internal social network use in the proposed model.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 422 public servants working in wards (grassroot-level government) in Vietnam. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

Empirical findings indicate that diversity-oriented leadership positively impacts knowledge sharing through the mediating mechanism of transparent internal communication. Moreover, internal social network use moderates the nexus between diversity-oriented leadership and knowledge sharing.

Practical implications

The findings suggest that public managers can promote knowledge-sharing behaviors among employees by building diversity-oriented leadership and enhancing transparent internal communication. Moreover, public managers should encourage employees to use internal social network.

Originality/value

This inquiry advances the understanding of knowledge sharing in public organizations via the predictive role of diversity-oriented leadership and the mediating mechanism of transparent internal communication. Moreover, this study is among the pioneering studies investigating the moderating role of internal social network use.

Abstract

Purpose

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Considering the restricted and enclosed nature of prisons and closed environments and the prolonged and close contact between individuals, COVID-19 is more likely to have a higher incidence in these settings. This study aims to assess the prevalence of COVID-19 among prisoners.

Design/methodology/approach

Papers published in English from 2019 to July 7, 2023, were identified using relevant keywords such as prevalence, COVID-19 and prisoner in the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Google Scholar. For the meta-analysis of the prevalence, Cochrane’s Q statistics were calculated. A random effect model was used due to the heterogeneity in COVID-19 prevalence across included studies in the meta-analysis. All analyses were performed in STATA-13.

Findings

The pooled data presented a COVID-19 prevalence of 20% [95%CI: 0.13, 0.26] and 24% [95%CI: 0.07, 0.41], respectively, in studies that used PCR and antibody tests. Furthermore, two study designs, cross-sectional and cohort, were used. The results of the meta-analysis showed studies with cross-sectional and cohort designs reported 20% [95%CI: 0.11, 0.29] and 25% [95%CI: 0.13, 0.38], respectively.

Originality/value

Through more meticulous planning, it is feasible to reduce the number of individuals in prison cells, thereby preventing the further spread of COVID-19.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines how project leaders’ knowledge hiding influences project performance via project employee creativity, employing the conservation of resources theory. Further, we investigate how mastery motivational climate (MMC) moderates the project employee creativity and project performance relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing purposive sampling design, two-wave data (N = 245) was collected with a gap of three weeks from employees working in R&D departments in private software development project-based organizations located in Lahore, Pakistan.

Findings

Results suggest that leaders’ knowledge hiding does impede project employee creativity and negatively influence project performance. In addition, MMC was found to accentuate the relationship between project employee creativity and project performance.

Practical implications

This study offers notable insights into the knowledge hiding literature from a top-down perspective within the project management domain relating to IT projects. This study’s findings pose implications for practitioners and project-based organizations who are interested in counteracting the adverse effects of knowledge hiding on project performance.

Originality/value

This study proposes a novel approach to job design by considering resource scarcity caused by a leader’s knowledge hiding as a job demand, along with the achievement goal perspective driven by a mastery or goal orientation. To understand these two perspectives, we rely on the conservation of resources (COR) theory to describe how a leader’s knowledge hiding affects project performance through project employee creativity, moderated by mastery motivational climate.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the present study is to reveal the antecedents of the new green product success (NGPS) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that manufacture in Türkiye with a middle-income economy. To this end, a research model for the serial mediating role of green human capital (GHC) and green adaptive ability (GAA) in the relationship between green mindfulness (GM) and NGPS was developed and tested. Determining the driving forces of NGPS is essential due to the contributions of SMEs manufacturing, especially in middle-income economies, such as Türkiye, to the national economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study used partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the hypothesized relationships. The study hypotheses were tested in a sample of 396 manufacturing enterprises, qualified as SMEs in Türkiye with ISO 14001 certificates.

Findings

Empirical evidence indicates that GM, GHC and GAA act as significant antecedents of NGPS. Furthermore, empirical evidence demonstrates that GHC and GAA, in turn, mediate the relationship between GM and NGPS.

Research limitations/implications

Managers, especially in manufacturing SMEs, should be aware that they need to develop intangible resources to improve NGPS. Increased investment in GM results in higher levels of GHC and GAA, which collectively leads to improved NGPS.

Originality/value

The current literature has not previously explained the mechanism of the relationship between GM and NGPS. The originality of the present study, which discusses the relevant research gap, is to develop an integrated framework to investigate how GM impacts NGPS, specifically for SMEs, and to test it empirically.

Abstract

Purpose

This study delineates the factors impacting the motivation and job satisfaction of humanitarian logisticians. This study aims to explore their motivations for entering the sector and the reasons for persisting despite the challenges.

Design/methodology/approach

Using an exploratory research design, data were gathered through online semi-structured questionnaires distributed to international and national non-governmental organisations (NGOs), UN agencies, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the logistics cluster and the Humanitarian Logistics Association.

Findings

This study reveals that humanitarian organisations, along with their policies, culture and practices, significantly influence staff well-being. Altruistic motives drive logisticians to support those in need, aligning with their moral standards. However, job satisfaction declines due to issues such as management practices, unfairness, bureaucracy and other factors affecting work-life balance.

Practical implications

These findings offer insights for humanitarian organisations to address the challenges faced by logisticians and enhance their well-being. Understanding the issues before, during and after deployment is crucial for organisational focus. Representatives from some NGOs expressed optimism about the usefulness of this data during the collection process.

Originality/value

This research pioneers an examination of the motivation and satisfaction of humanitarian logisticians, contributing to the existing body of knowledge on human resources in the non-profit sector.

Abstract

Purpose

Employees' well-being has emerged as a critical issue in the software industry. Therefore, our study examines the detrimental effect of exploitative leadership on subjective well-being directly and through self-efficacy. We also investigate the buffering effect of resilience on this relationship using the conversation of resources (COR).

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 585 software industry professionals via two-way self-administered questionnaires. The proposed hypotheses were tested using Process Model 5.

Findings

Our study confirms the negative effect of exploitative leadership on subjective well-being, both directly and indirectly via self-efficacy. Furthermore, the findings indicate that resilience reduces the negative effect of exploitative leadership on subjective well-being.

Research limitations/implications

Our study contributes to the existing literature on exploitative leadership by demonstrating its detrimental effects on employee’s subjective well-being. It also provides a more nuanced understanding of the unexplored relationship between exploitative leadership and subjective well-being by explaining the mediating role of self-efficacy and the moderating role of resilience.

Practical implications

Policymakers and human resource practitioners may design training and development programs to promote morality and ethical behaviors. This will enhance employees' subjective well-being, aligning with SDG 3’s goal of ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.

Originality/value

Our study provides a novel perspective by expanding the nomological network of exploitative leadership to include lower self-efficacy and subjective well-being. It also extends our understating of how resilient employees sustain their well-being under exploitative leadership.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to explore and explain sustainable behaviours in an organizational context using self-determination theory, suggesting that individuals are likely to be engaged in green practices when supported by their needs.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used three waves of longitudinal design, consisting of 702 executives in leadership roles across public and private companies with an average of 15–20 years of work experience. Professionals working throughout PAN India, the USA, Germany and Australia provided us with the data.

Findings

Green transformational leaderships play a pivot in fostering optimism in employees when recrafting their work. Employees being encouraged to evaluate their jobs within the organization’s capacity would bring meaningful change and envision a sustainable future. All the study hypotheses were supported, highlighting the importance of green-focused leadership with individual agencies in line with the organization’s green values.

Practical implications

Using sustainable practices advances organizations in providing green commitment through leadership. Implementing this in the organization can help achieve long-term success by ensuring sustainable practices are embedded in culture rather than a peripheral initiative promoting sustainable decision-making and behaviours.

Originality/value

The study provides insights into the factors influencing decisions to maintain and adopt sustainable practices by providing a deeper understanding of green behaviour change and strategies for promoting pro-environmental strategies in organizations.
