Abstract

Purpose

Learning capability improves knowledge resources fosters innovative capabilities and firm competitiveness. The study aims to examine the human resource management (HRM) practice and employee creativity relationship using organizational learning capability (OLC) as a mediating variable.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 67 small-sized and 96 medium-sized firms. Confirmatory factor analysis was applied to establish construct validity and reliability. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the proposed model and hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that performance appraisal and employee creativity were positively related. Employee participation and employee creativity were positively related. Compensation and employee creativity were nonsignificantly related. OLC mediates the performance appraisal and employee creativity relationship. Similarly, OLC mediates the employee participation and employee creativity relationship. However, OLC did not mediate the compensation and employee creativity relationship.

Research limitations/implications

Due to the research’s SME focus and cross-sectional data, the finding’s generalizability will be constrained.

Practical implications

The findings of the study would be useful to policymakers, stakeholders and management of SMEs in developing a supportive learning climate that promotes experiential and continuous learning cultures to ensure strategic capabilities, sustainable competitive advantage and innovativeness.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the extant literature on OLC, HRM practices and employee creativity by empirically evidencing that OLC mediates the performance appraisal, employee participation and employee creativity relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

This work examines the impact of financialization and vertical integration on renter-perceived property owner effectiveness.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a sample of 1,186 renters in the US, the UK and Canada, the research addresses gaps in the literature regarding the implications of financialization and vertical integration on renters.

Findings

In contrast to previous work that shows the negative implications of financialization, the results indicate that financialization is positively correlated with renter-perceived property owner effectiveness, challenging the prevailing narrative that it strictly benefits shareholders and the financial elite. Vertical integration’s effect on renter-perceived property owner effectiveness was also shown to be positive and significant, enhancing the existing vertical integration literature that has not focused on real estate. A post-hoc interaction analysis revealed the benefits of vertical integration on renter sentiment are greater among highly financialized firms.

Practical implications

The study offers managerial considerations for property owners seeking to enhance renter sentiment and satisfaction as well as contributes to real estate strategy and management literature.

Originality/value

These results are novel, as previous research has not empirically shown financialization to elicit benefits for broader stakeholder groups.

Abstract

Purpose

Blockchain technology is one of the major contributors to supply chain sustainability because of its inherent features. However, its adoption rate is relatively low due to reasons such as the diverse barriers impeding blockchain adoption. The purpose of this study is to identify blockchain adoption barriers in sustainable supply chain and uncovers their interrelationships.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-phase framework that combines machine learning (ML) classifiers, BORUTA feature selection algorithm, and Grey-DEMATEL method. From the literature review, 26 potential barriers were identified and evaluated through the performance of ML models with accuracy and f-score.

Findings

The findings reveal that feature selection algorithm detected 15 prominent barriers, and random forest (RF) classifier performed with the highest accuracy and f-score. Moreover, the performance of the RF increased by 2.38% accuracy and 2.19% f-score after removing irrelevant barriers, confirming the validity of feature selection algorithm. An RF classifier ranked the prominent barriers and according to ranking, financial constraints, immaturity, security, knowledge and expertise, and cultural differences resided at the top of the list. Furthermore, a Grey-DEMATEL method is employed to expose interrelationships between prominent barriers and to provide an overview of the cause-and-effect group.

Practical implications

The outcome of this study can help industry practitioners develop new strategies and plans for blockchain adoption in sustainable supply chains.

Originality/value

The research on the adoption of blockchain technology in sustainable supply chains is still evolving. This study contributes to the ongoing debate by exploring how practitioners and decision-makers adopt blockchain technology, developing strategies and plans in the process.

Abstract

Purpose

This research examines the influence of the digital voice of consumers (DVoC) on the resilience of supply chains (SCR) within the renewable energy sector. The main goal is to identify and highlight the crucial aspects that enable the examination of this impact.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive literature analysis was performed utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach to ascertain pertinent factors. This research utilizes a comprehensive methodology that merges interpretive structural modeling (ISM) with Matrice d’Impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliquée à un Classement (MICMAC) analysis to assess the discovered variables.

Findings

The study identified 16 factors that contribute to both DVoC and SCR. Key influential factors include top management support, collaboration, feedback influence and flexibility. These factors play a significant role in enhancing SCR by facilitating better adaptation and response to disruptions.

Research limitations/implications

The study is confined to the renewable energy sector and may lack generalizability to other businesses without additional validation. Subsequent studies ought to investigate the implementation of these findings across various industrial contexts to enhance comprehension of DVoC’s influence on SCR.

Originality/value

This study presents a new integrated framework for comprehending the function of DVoC in improving SCR. It presents significant practical consequences for stakeholders in the renewable energy sector, such as researchers, regulators, manufacturers and consumers, highlighting the necessity for a resilient and flexible supply chain.

Abstract

Purpose

Entrepreneurial practice often relies on the minimum viable product (MVP) to test business model hypotheses, yet the conceptualization of its makeup remains inadequately defined, particularly in uncertain startup contexts. This paper aims to clarify how entrepreneurs should think about MVPs in terms of their uses, goals and essential components to enhance their effectiveness as a tool for navigating uncertainty.

Design/methodology/approach

Existing literature on MVPs is broad and often overlapping, leading to confusion regarding essential components and best practices for MVP development. Through a systematic analysis of existing published definitions, this paper offers clarity by proposing a framework that breaks the MVP concept up into process, goals and the fundamental elements necessary to launch an MVP. By doing so, it provides actionable guidance for entrepreneurs seeking to utilize MVPs in their business model testing endeavors.

Findings

This conceptual paper critically examines the lean startup approach, seeking to disentangle the complexities surrounding MVP development. Drawing on existing literature and practical insights, the study identifies and articulates a framework that clarifies the MVP concept along with the core elements required for creating a viable MVP, including (a) artistic elements, (b) a robust distribution channel and (c) an effective user feedback mechanism.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to theory development and pedagogical practices by providing a structured framework for understanding and implementing MVPs in entrepreneurial contexts. By identifying the minimal category elements of an MVP, it offers practical insights into entrepreneurs and educators alike, facilitating effective business model hypothesis testing in varied and uncertain environments.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the impact of green human resource management (GHRM) practices on employees’ pro-environmental behavior in Pakistan’s hospitality industry. It attempts to identify the critical success factors involved in promoting GHRM and pro-environmental behaviors at the workplace using Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) and cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) approaches. Later, based on the ability-motivation-opportunity (AMO) model, the study also categorizes the identified critical factors into three categories: ability, motivation and opportunity.

Design/methodology/approach

The ISM approach was applied to determine the contextual relationship among the identified critical success factors responsible for promoting GHRM. MICMAC, a structural technique to analyze and validate the ISM-based model, was used to determine the autonomous, dependent, linkage and independent factors based on expert opinions and judgments. The goal was to determine the role of GHRM in transforming the pro-environmental behavior of employees.

Findings

The study’s findings show that the proper integration of effective GHRM practices significantly impacts pro-environmental employee behavior. The hierarchical model introduces innovation in the field of GHRM because ISM-based hierarchical models are flexible enough to include or exclude practices according to the green organizational objectives in the hospitality industry within the context of Pakistan. The results offer a comprehensive illustration of the importance of GHRM practices in facilitating, encouraging and promoting employees to take green initiatives and achieve business sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

The study utilizes the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) technique to identify key success criteria for GHRM, while the innovative approaches of ISM and MICMAC techniques were used to investigate employee pro-environmental behaviors. This novel method gives GHRM research an analytical direction by providing an organized framework for evaluating the impact of GHRM initiatives on environmental outcomes. Additionally, by focusing on developed economies rather than emerging ones, our study within Pakistan’s hospitality sector fills a knowledge vacuum on the dynamics of GHRM in a developing nation.

Practical implications

This study highlights the significance of managers in the hospitality sector serving as role models for implementing GHRM practices to encourage pro environmental behavior among employees. Prioritizing green structural capital, establishing standard environmentally friendly criteria for hiring and evaluating prospective employees and initiating green projects to promote a psychologically green environment are some of the key recommendations. Improving environmental performance, employee satisfaction and loyalty in the hotel industry requires constant communication, training and employee participation in sustainability decision-making.

Originality/value

The GHRM practices have been extensively discussed by academics and researchers. However, there is a notable absence of discussion on the key factors that play a role in transforming employees’ attitudes and behaviors.

The case data are from a mix of secondary sources, which included company documents, webpages and blogposts, autobiographies co-written by Schultz, newspaper stories, news media and other publicly available videos, magazine articles, photographs of signed unionization statements, and webinar interview.

Case overview/synopsis

In late autumn 2021, the global retail coffee and foodservice company Starbucks dealt with employees at a few USA stores who initiated unionization efforts in an attempt to change their workplace. Their actions triggered a wave of similar attempts at Starbucks stores across the USA over the next few years. Employees amplified their voices on social media, stating both their love for the company and their disenfranchisement. They claimed to have little input about policies and workplace decisions that affected them and that leadership had not heard or adequately responded to concerns with staffing, safety, equipment, and abusive customers. Walkouts were staged and employees at numerous stores pursued unionization. In 2023, Laxman Narasimhan replaced Howard Schultz as CEO. His tenure started with the challenge of reengaging employees who claimed their collective voice was unheard by leadership Readers will consider what employee voice means in the context of baristas working for a large corporation, and how their emotions, commitment to and respect for the organization, and their desire to be heard, related to efforts to unionize and maintain employment.

Complexity academic level

This case can be used as a unit review to cover several organizational behavior topics or can be used with specific concepts for graduate or undergraduate students. The placement within the semester plan depends on which unit/concepts the instructor will pair with it, such as emotions in the workplace, a module on loyalty, voice and exit, or the introduction of employee voice and engagement. It can also be used in conjunction with cross-level concepts such as trust and leadership. For courses focused on talent management, employee relations, or human resource development, the case could be used to introduce multiple concepts or as a concluding assessment. It would best pair with topics such as employee satisfaction, exit, voice and loyalty, inclusive decision-making or emotions in the workplace. For a course in labor relations, the case could introduce the idea that employees’ experiences, emotions, and perceptions may be related to efforts to unionize.

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the publication structure of academic research on organizational creativity between 1975 and 2022.

Design/methodology/approach

Bibliographic data on organizational creativity are extracted from the Scopus database and then analyzed through VOSviewer and R Statistical Software.

Findings

This paper analyzes 416 publications on organizational creativity from 1975 to 2022. Accordingly, the study identifies the most productive countries, universities, authors, journals and prolific organizational creativity publications. Also, the study uses VOSviewer and R Statistical Software Bibliometrix Package to visualize the mapping based on co-citation, bibliographic coupling and co-occurrence of keywords.

Originality/value

The study’s main contribution is that it provides an overview of the trends and trajectories of organizational creativity, which may help researchers and practitioners comprehend the trends and future research directions.

Abstract

Purpose

Financial experience is very important in today’s dynamic world of constant globalization with the upsurge in sophisticated financial products entering the financial markets, especially in developing countries. This is because it helps the illiterate unbanked poor women owners of micro businesses to make wise financial judgments and options guided by psychology and cognition. This paper aims to ascertain how financial experience can promote microfinance lending and the continued existence of women micro businesses in rural Uganda through an intervening role.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper employs a structural equation model through SmartPLS software to ascertain how financial experience can promote microfinance lending and the continued existence of women micro businesses in rural Uganda through an intervening role.

Findings

The empirical findings from this study indicated that financial experience, as a significant and positive mediator, improves microfinance lending and the continued existence of women micro businesses in rural Uganda.

Research limitations/implications

Owing to the geographical ambit of the current study and sample source from only one developing country, future studies may collect data from other regions of the world for comparative analysis to give more insights on the role of financial experience in rural financial markets.

Practical implications

The government of Uganda should promote financial literacy to enhance the financial experience of women owners of micro businesses to help them make better financial judgements in the rural financial markets. This may increase microfinance lending and the continued existence of vibrant women micro businesses in rural areas. As a result, this could lead to the creation of more jobs for the ever-growing younger population in Uganda.

Originality/value

This study is motivated by the lack of understanding and experience about key financial concepts among more than 3.5 billion adults, mostly women. It applies the Experiential Learning Theory grounded in psychology and cognition to show how the financial experience of women who run micro businesses derived from repeated retrieval of knowledge and reflection, can help them to make sound financial judgments to become financially included by rural-based microfinance institutions. Learning-by-doing allows women owners of micro businesses to repetitively take prudent saving, borrowing and investment selections that help them to generate income to meet timely loan repayment to access more microcredit for the continued existence. This is inadequate in the current theory of microfinance lending in rural financial markets.

Abstract

Purpose

This study uncovers interdependent mechanisms triggered by excessive use of mobile phones which lower the performance of individuals in business organizations. The quantum of cognitive and attentional fluctuations caused by Nomophobia-induced impulsive use of mobile phone that degrades job performance is the focus of this study for suggesting realistic regulatory measures. Similarly, the threshold of allowable smartphone use was determined as a foundation to strike balance between adverse psycho-behavioral implications of blanket ban policy and the cognitive overload of unregulated mobile phone usage.

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting the quasi-experimental design, a sample of 159 individuals working in six different organizations was tested under dissimilar conditions using a variety of experimental interventions. Participants were subjected to different intensity of planned interruptions inciting responses through sets of short message services (SMS), messages on Whatsapp, X (formerly twitter), Instagram and emails. The main data obtained from the experiment comprised 636 test performances and 5,724 reactive responses on smartphones along with 642 video recordings as supplementary evidence.

Findings

The analysis of data revealed five underlying inter-related mechanisms impacting performance of individuals, i.e. slow-down of cognitive processing, increased temptation for peripheral activities/side scrolling, widened lag between focus and refocus, depletion of short-term working memory and reduced attention span. The strength of relationships between the mechanisms and intensity of Nomophobia significantly varied with the experimental interventions. Based on the identified mechanisms, organizations were suggested certain regulatory measures to minimize negative effects of Nomophobia-induced impulsive mobile phone usage.

Research limitations/implications

The study is based on a comparatively smaller sample size (total 159, 27 from each of the six organizations). Though sufficient, yet, the sample size could have been a little larger.

Practical implications

The blanket ban policy adopted by organizations for regulating use of mobile phone has been found to adversely affect performance more than the excessive use of mobile phone. Using mobile phone thrice an hour (1–2 min each) was found to have negligible effects on job performance. Allowing use of mobile phones at workplace (except in highly hazardous areas) can reduce stress, anxiety and depression caused by Nomophobia.

Social implications

To meeting social need, workers may not be denied the facility of mobile phone at workplace, except highly hazardous areas to allow them to remain connected and accessible. This study suggests viable measures to regulate use of mobile phones without depriving them of this vital facility.

Originality/value

The study is unique as it is based on experimental data, contrary to most of the studies relying on self-report methods of data collection. The mechanisms which degrade performance of workers due to excessive use of mobile phones (induced by Nomophobia) have not been explored and how the impact is propagated to the performance of workers is not known. This study has identified the five mechanisms and based on the mechanisms has suggested measures for the organizations to regulate the use of mobile phones in the organizations. This study has found that use of mobile phone thrice in an hour (1–2 min each) affects performance of individuals negligibly. Organizations adopting a blanket ban policy on use of mobile phone increase stress of workers (Nomophobia) that is more harmful for job performance.
