Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines how U.S. consumer intentions to adopt hemp vary across product types using the theory of planned behavior (TPB).

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected via an online survey of U.S. residents in 2022 (n = 1,948). Two-step structural equation modeling is used to examine how TPB constructs and background factors influence intent to use five different hemp-based products: cannabidiol (CBD), clothing, food, personal care products, and pet products. Data are analyzed using R.

Findings

Positive attitudes towards all categories of hemp-based products increase the probability of adoption, while subjective norm and perceived behavioral control have limited and varied significant influence across product models. Age has a consistent significant and negative influence on adoption.

Research limitations/implications

Findings highlight consumer segmentation and marketing opportunities, inform hemp stakeholder decision-making, and provide directions for future research. Given the absence of explanatory power of SN and PBC on most product models and the diversity of products and nuanced U.S. hemp policy, future research could investigate expanded iterations of TPB. Using revealed behavior could also highlight potential intention-behavior gaps and offer more robust insights for hemp stakeholders.

Originality/value

Findings contribute to a limited body of information on markets and consumer demand for hemp in the U.S.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the approach taken to identify areas for development and to enhance positive practice, in line with a preventative tier 1 positive behaviour support (PBS) approach. The work was conducted within a supported living service, where 10 individuals with a learning disability reside.

Design/methodology/approach

The intervention was provided through a dedicated behavioural clinical specialist role over nine months. An initial assessment included measures evaluating PBS, active support and staff culture. Narrative themes were also noted from discussions with staff to deepen the understanding of informal staff culture. Together, this informed a programme of work guided by the setting of both individual and service-wide goals. Input included practice leadership, staff training, review of PBS plans and delivery of case workshops. Assessments were then repeated to evaluate the work completed.

Findings

There were indications of improvements in staff culture and practice following the intervention.

Originality/value

This practice example may be useful for other organisations to consider when thinking about how to use resources effectively to improve people’s quality of life and implement tier 1 of PBS provision.

Abstract

Purpose

Serving the public sector, emergency response organizations operate in uncertain environments. This study aims to understand the impact of effective coordination and collaboration of volunteers and career responders on response time performance considering the complexity of their task environments measured as population density. The operations strategy models designed for manufacturing and services in the private sector provide overarching theoretical insights to explore the role of organizational design characterized by the mix of volunteers and career responders in the public sector emergency services.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses hierarchical regression analysis to substantiate the theoretical model using publicly available data extracted from the US National Fire Incident Reporting System. The data is analyzed using the US National Fire Protection Association’s standard to define fire department organizational types working in differing task environments categorized as rural, suburban and urban, using population density from the US Census Bureau.

Findings

This study upholds the framework of operations strategy model for public services and finds that fire department organizational design and task environment significantly influence operational performance measured by incident response time. While increasing the percentage of career firefighters can improve response time for volunteer fire departments, once a threshold is achieved, such an increase does not help to improve incident response time for combination and career fire departments.

Originality/value

This study takes a fresh look at public emergency services using operations strategy models and explores the operational impact of fire department organizational design using the mix of volunteer and career firefighters under varying environmental conditions. While the findings are specific to one public emergency service domain, they open avenues for future research to extend these models to other emergency service types and public services.

Abstract

Purpose

The construction industry is facing worker shortages, and the resulting competition for skilled workers has increased employee turnover in the sector. Consequently, construction and engineering firms are struggling to attract and retain employees to meet current demands for construction projects. The regular inflow of new employees, who likely need training, may affect organizational and project performance. Construction firms can boost performance by assessing and then honing workers’ skills, including soft skills.

Design/methodology/approach

One way to assess individuals’ soft skills is to use personality assessments. This study used three personality assessments— – the HEXACO Personality Inventory, Emotional Intelligence Diagnostic and Q-DiSC 101 Behavioral Assessment – to identify the traits of general contractor project managers; sheet metal and air conditioning field leaders (specialty field leaders) and sheet metal, air conditioning and electrical project managers (specialty project managers) in the United States for job role transition purposes. The groups’ mean scores for each assessment component were analyzed using ANOVA and independent t-test to identify statistically significant differences in the personality traits of the three groups – specifically between specialty field leaders and general contractor project managers as well as between specialty field leaders and specialty project managers.

Findings

This study found that the personality characteristics of workers in these job roles varied. One-way ANOVA revealed that there were significant differences in mean personality factor scores among specialty field leaders, specialty project managers and general contractor project managers. Independent t-tests showed significant differences in patience, forgiveness, fearfulness, etc. identifying the differences between specialty field leaders and general contractor project managers. Similarly, results highlighted significant differences in modesty, inquisitiveness and sociability, among others, for specialty field leaders and specialty project managers.

Practical implications

Understanding the personality traits associated with skills needed for leadership across construction roles empowers companies to refine human resource strategies. Personality assessments can complement recruitment, identifying strong candidates for leadership positions. Additionally, these insights can optimize leadership development programs and facilitate career transitions for specialty field leaders by pinpointing suitable candidates and tailoring training programs for successful role changes.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the field in two ways. First, it focuses on personality traits within the specific context of construction leadership, providing valuable insights for companies seeking to optimize their leadership teams. Second, by exploring the personality differences between these roles, the study goes beyond individual job requirements and examines the potential challenges and opportunities for career transitions within construction. This information can be used to inform training programs and career development pathways for construction professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical perspective on how the COVID-19 crisis shaped inclusive leadership behaviors of global business leaders.

Design/methodology/approach

Using quantitative and qualitative methods, the authors analyzed 240 CEO statements in 120 multinational enterprises from six countries (France, India, Japan, South Korea, UK, USA), pre- and mid-COVID-19.

Findings

Results show that CEO emphasis on inclusive leadership increased during the pandemic. More substantively, the authors identify three key behaviors of inclusive leadership – fidelity, calmness and collective resilience.

Originality/value

The authors provide empirical evidence of inclusive leadership behaviors by global business leaders. In doing so, the authors integrate inclusive leadership into societally engaged international business research.

Abstract

This chapter contributes to the literature on domestic food provisioning and food insecurity in contemporary Europe, focusing on lone-parent households living with a disability or long-term health condition, either of a parent and/or a child, in the United Kingdom and Denmark. Taking a comparative case approach, it examines parents' strategies to achieve food security through practices of ‘domestic food provisioning’ that draw on resources within and outside the household. Taking account of the multiple layers of context in which provisioning practices are embedded, this chapter identifies factors or mechanisms that enhance or reduce food security for families living with a disability or long-term health condition. At the micro-level of food preparation, these families experience challenges including cooking and requirements for labour-saving equipment, providing meals that meet the needs of selective eaters (often children), the need to rely on their children's help and for outsourced domestic labour through buying ready-made foods. At the meso-level of procurement and ‘physical access’ to shops, transport is crucial, with households experiencing differences in service provision. At the macro-level of national welfare systems and ‘economic access’ to food, this chapter points to evidence that Britain provides insufficient financial provision for those with a disability or long-term health condition compared with Denmark, differences reflected in the depth and rates of poverty and food insecurity between these countries. However, as the cases in both countries demonstrate, welfare benefits provide insufficient financial resources to access adequate nutritious food or meet customary norms.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this study is to test whether ethical financial behavior as a mediator promotes microfinance inclusion and survival of the poor young women microenterprises in rural Uganda.

Design/methodology/approach

The methods recommended by Kenny et al. (1998); Shrout and Bolger (2002); MacKinnon et al. (2004); and Preacher and Hayes (2004) were used to establish the existence of non-zero monotonic association between microfinance inclusion and survival through testing the mediating effect of ethical financial behavior in SmartPLS.

Findings

The results from the structural equation modeling revealed a significant full mediating effect of ethical financial behavior in the relationship between microfinance inclusion and survival of the poor young women microenterprises. Microfinance inclusion and ethical financial behavior explain 62 % of the variation in survival of the poor young women microenterprises in rural Uganda.

Research limitations/implications

Whereas significant results were obtained from this study, the data were collected only from rural-based poor young women microenterprises located in northern Uganda. Extending the sample to cover the whole country may provide a more representative picture. Besides, it would be useful to compare results across developing countries as this may provide information about the generality of our findings.

Practical implications

The findings from this study can be useful to managers of microfinance institutions in developing countries to adopt practice that can promote financial discipline among rural poor young women microentrepreneurs. Routine financial education and business mentorship can be organized through workshops, trainings and seminars to teach rural poor young women microentrepreneurs how to manage money, especially business loans borrowed from the microfinance institutions to put it into right use. This can help them to meet timely loan repayment to increase access to future microfinance loans.

Originality/value

This study provides the first evidence on the use of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and theory of reasoned action (TRA) to explain microfinance inclusion of the poor young women microentrepreneurs in rural Uganda. The study uses a blend of TPB and TRA derived from psychology and sociology to explain repayment intention and ethical behaviors of the poor young women borrowers, which determines the microfinance lending cycle to make microcredit available for them to engage in entrepreneurship to come out of poverty to attain wellbeing.

Abstract

Purpose

Using recent US regional data associated with food system operations, this study aims at building optimization and econometric models to incorporate varying influential factors on food hub location decisions and generate effective facility location solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

Mathematical optimization and econometric models have been commonly used to identify hub location decisions, and each is associated with specific strengths to handle uncertainty. This paper develops an optimization model and a hurdle model of the US fresh produce sector to compare the hub location solutions between these two modeling approaches.

Findings

Econometric modeling and mathematical optimization are complementary approaches. While there is a divergence between the results of the optimization model and the econometric model, the optimization solution is largely confirmed by the econometric solution. A combination of the results of the two models might lead to improved decision-making.

Practical implications

This study suggests a future direction in which model development can move forward, for example, to explore and expose how to make the existing modeling techniques easier to use and more accessible to decision-makers.

Social implications

The models and results provide information that is currently limited and is useful to help inform sustainable decisions of various stakeholders interested in the development of regional food systems, regional infrastructure investment and operational strategies for food hubs.

Originality/value

This study sheds light on how the application of complementary modeling approaches improves the effectiveness of facility location solutions. This study offers new perspectives on elaborating key features to encompass facility location issues by applying interdisciplinary approaches.
