Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose and test a model to explain users’ intention to adopt m-health devices and divide the importance of antecedents for users to adopt m-health devices based on the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) framework.

Design/methodology/approach

This research conducted an online survey with m-health app users and collected 562 valid responses. A hybrid SEM-ANN approach was employed to evaluate the research model and hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that motivation (M), opportunity (O), and ability (A) affect users’ flow experience and loyalty and further affect their adoption intention of m-health technology. Opportunity plays a more critical role in m-health adoption intention than ability.

Originality/value

This study comprehensively examined the factors that affect users’ deep engagement and m-health adoption from the perspective of MOA. It used the hybrid SEM-ANN method to divide the critical role of motivation, opportunity and ability, providing a new analysis approach for studying information technology (IT) behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

Money management practices among couples from 27 countries were studied to understand how they reflect egalitarian values. The welfare system was used as a classification criterion, to account for the distinct socio-political contexts in which couple relationships are formed.

Design/methodology/approach

The data are sourced from the 2012 Survey on Family and Changing Gender Roles of the International Social Survey Programme. The analytical strategy used has been binary logistic regression.

Findings

The results demonstrate that participation of the woman in the household economy and financial decision-making indicates higher levels of egalitarian values in the couple. Couples who distinguish between a common fund and individual funds demonstrate more egalitarian values than those who have only a common fund. Besides, symmetry in the couple in terms of the income level of each partner increased the probability of having more egalitarian values. Greater equality was found among couples who resided in countries with a Mediterranean welfare system.

Originality/value

The paper makes an original contribution to the field of sociology and social policy by focus on couples' money management and improve understanding of the finance-well-being nexus.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of the study is to identify the differences and similarities in the communication between B2B participants in cross-cultural environments.

Design/methodology/approach

The research methods used in the study are two-fold: the literature analysis is complemented by primary qualitative research conducted in small- and medium-sized enterprises operating in Poland and doing business internationally. The research was focused on two culturally different markets: China and the United States. In the empirical research, the authors used one of the qualitative methods – Individual Depth Interview (IDI).

Findings

General findings showed that the strongest influence of culture was identified among older (+50 years old) business partners. The younger ones are eager to adapt and try to understand others' viewpoints. The research results may be used in creating business communication models in the countries researched for companies that plan to enter both American and Chinese markets.

Practical implications

The results of the study may have useful applied managerial value and be used in cooperation between SMEs' B2B business partners, not only from Poland but also from the whole region of Central and Eastern Europe and the United States and China.

Social implications

The findings may help to understand and communicate with culturally different social groups such as co-workers, students, teachers, etc.

Originality/value

The research presented in the paper covers the gap in the literature because it relates to some new factors (like cultural heritage, age and type of industry) which determine the effectiveness of personal business communication between partners in the international marketplace.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate whether and how enterprise social media (ESM) affordances affect employee agility.

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting self-determination theory (SDT), this study examines a model in which the four ESM affordances (i.e. visibility, association, editability and persistence) impact employee agility through the three basic psychological needs satisfaction (i.e. perceived autonomy, perceived relatedness and perceived competence) of employees. Mplus 7.4 was used to analyze survey data gathered from 304 employees who used ESM in the workplace.

Findings

The authors’ findings show that all four ESM affordances contribute to perceived relatedness and perceived competence; visibility and association affordances also have positive impacts on perceived autonomy; and all three psychological needs satisfaction positively impact employee agility.

Originality/value

First, this study adapted SDT to explore how ESM influences employee agility. Second, this study enriches the relevant research on the antecedents of employee agility and also provides new evidence and theoretical support for employee agility. Third, this study effectively expands the antecedents and outcomes of employee basic psychological needs satisfaction in the domain of ESM and agility.

Abstract

Purpose

Building on the core concept of anthropomorphism and the empathy-helping theory, this research aims to examine how product anthropomorphism and buyer usage intentions affect sellers’ pricing in second-hand markets as well as explore the psychological dynamics underlying these effects.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the hypotheses, a series of four experiments were conducted. Studies 1a (n = 140) and 1b (n = 140) employed a one-factor (product anthropomorphism: yes vs no) between-subject design and used chi-square analysis. Study 2 (n = 145) and Study 3 (n = 162) employed a 2 (usage intention: protective vs destructive) × 2 (product anthropomorphism: yes vs no) between-subject design and used two-way ANOVA and moderated mediation analysis.

Findings

The study found that even when potential buyers with destructive (vs protective) usage intentions offer higher prices, sellers of anthropomorphized (vs non-anthropomorphized) products are less willing to choose them (Studies 1a and 1b). When potential buyers express destructive (vs protective) usage intentions, sellers of anthropomorphized (vs non-anthropomorphized) products are less willing to offer discounts (Study 2), and the lowest price they are willing to accept is higher (Study 3). The level of perceived capacity for pain mediates these effects (Study 3).

Originality/value

These findings offer insights into the application of product anthropomorphism strategies and the second-hand transactions of used anthropomorphized products.

Abstract

Purpose

In the practice of live streaming e-commerce, the consumer demand is usually uncertain, and the inventory and prices can be decided by brand owners or streamers. To this end, this study examines the inventory and pricing decisions of the brand owner and streamer in a live streaming e-commerce supply chain under demand uncertainty.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, four scenarios are considered, i.e. the brand owner determines the inventory and price (Scenario BB), the brand owner determines the inventory and the streamer determines the price (Scenario BS), the streamer determines the inventory and the brand owner determines the price (Scenario SB), and the streamer determines the inventory and price (Scenario SS).

Findings

The results show that the inventory and prices, as well as the profits of the brand owner and streamer increase with the consumer sensitivity to streamer’s sales effort level under the four scenarios. The inventory (price) is the highest under Scenario SS (SB), while that is the lowest under Scenario BB (BS). In addition, when the sensitivity is low, the brand owner’s profit is the highest under Scenario BB, otherwise, the profit is the highest under Scenario SS. Regardless of the sensitivity, the streamer’s profit is always the highest under Scenario SS.

Originality/value

Few studies focused on the inventory and pricing decisions of brand owners and streamers in live streaming e-commerce supply chains under demand uncertainty, while this work bridges the research gap. This study can provide theoretical basis and decision support for brand owners and streamers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the relationship between earnings call sentiment and subsequent media coverage sentiment. Examining these synergistic effects between executive communication style and resulting news narratives provides novel insights. The unscripted qualitative discussions in earnings calls establish perceptions and outlooks that the media echoes in later coverage. Understanding these intricate connections between information channels aids communication experts and market analysts in shaping strategic messaging and predicting market impacts. In addition, the link with the stock return reaction is revisited, and this study shows that the effects on stock returns driven by news information are moderated by earnings call sentiments.

Design/methodology/approach

This study analyzes the interplay between earnings call sentiments and subsequent news sentiments for 30 S&P 500 companies from 2012 to 2022. Utilizing the FinBERT Natural Language Processing (NLP) model, we extract sentiment scores from earnings call transcripts and corresponding news articles. We apply OLS regression models to examine the relationship between negative earnings call sentiments and subsequent negative news sentiments, as well as their combined impact on stock returns. Control variables include financial metrics such as ROA, ROE, firm size, Market-to-Book ratio and liquidity. The methodology allows for a nuanced exploration of sentiment transfer mechanisms in financial communication and their market implications.

Findings

Our study reveals a significant positive correlation between negative sentiment in earnings calls and subsequent negative news sentiment. A 1% increase in negative call sentiment associates with a 0.54% increase in negative news sentiment the following day, supporting Agenda Building and Impression Management hypotheses. We observe a multiplicative effect on stock returns when negative call sentiment coincides with negative news sentiment, supporting signaling theory. Financial metrics like ROE show marginal influence on news sentiment, while others demonstrate insignificant impact. These findings underscore the importance of holistic corporate communication management in mitigating potential negative market reactions.

Research limitations/implications

This study’s primary limitation is its sample size of 30 S&P 500 companies, potentially limiting generalizability. The use of a single sentiment analysis model (FinBERT) could impact results, warranting comparison with alternative methods. The study’s timeframe (2012–2022) may not capture the most recent market dynamics. Future research could expand the sample size, incorporate additional sentiment analysis techniques and explore longer-term effects. Investigating industry-specific variations and the impact of macroeconomic factors could provide further insights. Additionally, qualitative analysis of earnings call content could complement these quantitative findings, offering a more comprehensive understanding of sentiment transfer mechanisms.

Practical implications

This study offers insights for corporate communicators, investor relations professionals and financial analysts. The strong correlation between earnings call sentiment and subsequent news sentiment emphasizes the need for management of corporate messaging during these calls. Companies should be aware that negative sentiments expressed in earnings calls may amplify through news coverage, potentially impacting stock performance. Investors and analysts should consider both earnings call and news sentiments when evaluating market reactions. For regulators, these findings highlight the importance of monitoring information dissemination practices to ensure market fairness. Overall, the study underscores the significance of a holistic approach to financial communication strategy.

Social implications

This research highlights the interconnected nature of corporate communication and media narratives, emphasizing social responsibility of both corporations and news outlets. The findings suggest that negative corporate messaging can perpetuate and amplify through news coverage, potentially affecting public perception and investor sentiment. This underscores the need for transparent and ethical communication practices in the business world. The study also raises awareness about the potential manipulation of public opinion through carefully crafted corporate narratives. It encourages stakeholders to critically evaluate both corporate communications and subsequent media coverage, promoting a more informed and discerning society in the context of financial information dissemination.

Originality/value

This study uniquely explores the interplay between earnings call sentiments and subsequent news sentiments, addressing a significant gap in financial communication research. By examining the sentiment transfer mechanism from corporate messaging to media narratives, it provides novel insights into information dissemination in financial markets. The research demonstrates how negative sentiments in earnings calls can amplify through news coverage, offering valuable implications for corporate communication strategies. This multifaceted analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between corporate communication, media coverage and market behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

Virtual clothing presentation has a visual 3D effort and allows consumers to interact. Currently, most scholars make virtual clothing presentations as a whole or focus on one element to study its impact on consumers’ purchase intentions. This study disassembles the components of virtual clothing presentation in Taobao and explores how each component (virtual clothing, virtual model, presentation space, presentation technology and system quality) affects consumers’ purchase intention, which can provide clothing companies recommendations for developing it and help improve consumers’ online shopping experience.

Design/methodology/approach

This study created the parts of a virtual clothing presentation and took advantage of Taobao’s 3D interactive module to simulate a shopping scenario. Participants experienced a 3D interactive virtual clothing presentation in which they could change clothing colors, show actual clothing sizes, try different model poses, switch presentation backgrounds and unfold clothing structure through interactive buttons. Then they were randomly assigned to view two kinds of images and videos of experiment clothing (real images and videos vs virtual ones), respectively. Hypotheses were tested using SEM and applying SmartPLS 4.

Findings

The results demonstrated that five components of virtual clothing presentation have different degrees of influence on consumers’ purchase intention through different consumer perceptions (perceived usefulness, ease of use and enjoyment). It is necessary to consider the design of the virtual clothing presentation in those five dimensions for different needs. In addition, it is feasible to replace images and animated videos of real clothing with virtual ones in Taobao.

Originality/value

Different types of virtual clothing presentations can lead to various results in terms of diverse impacts. This study disassembles and researches each component of a virtual clothing presentation. Overall, this study could provide guidance and suggestions for clothing companies to develop and design or invest in virtual clothing presentations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a novel self-powered monitoring system that uses radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting and ultra-low-power management technologies for real-time condition monitoring of switch rails.

Design/methodology/approach

The system is designed for integration within the jump wire holes of switch rails, ensuring structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. It features a highly efficient energy harvesting mechanism combined with optimized power management for wireless sensor nodes. An on-board antenna captures ambient RF energy, managed by high-efficiency circuits to ensure stable wireless sensor operation. An ultra-low-power system-on-chip is used to acquire and transmit multimodal data on vibration and temperature from the switch rails. The data collection is enhanced through a two-threshold approach, adapting to harvested energy levels for self-energy balancing.

Findings

Testing revealed that the energy harvesting subsystem operated stably at distances up to 2.9 m from the RF source, charging a 200 µF capacitor to 4.2 V in just 220 s. The monitoring subsystem’s average power consumption is in the low microwatt range. Continuous operation over 30 days in real conditions resulted in only a 5 mV reduction in battery voltage, indicating successful self-powered operation and validating long-term reliability in unattended scenarios.

Originality/value

This research presents an innovative solution, integrating RF energy harvesting with ultra-low-power technology, which addresses the power and stability challenges faced by traditional monitoring systems.
