Abstract

Purpose

Africa has the most deaths from infections yet lacks adequate capacity to engage in vaccine development, production and distribution, the cornerstone of efficiently managing and eliminating several infectious diseases. Research has scarcely explored the role of institutional logics in vaccine development, production and distribution, collectively known as end-to-end vaccine manufacturing. This study aims to explore how institutional logics influence firms to engage in the vaccine manufacturing value chain in Africa.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted multiple case study research using five vaccine manufacturing firms from four African countries in three regions. Qualitative interviews were conducted among 18 executives in 5 vaccine manufacturing firms.

Findings

We identified that the state, corporate and market institutional logics disparately influence the different parts of the vaccine manufacturing value chain. These institutional logics co-exist in a constellation that also shapes the organizational forms. Their constellation has dominant logics that guide behavior, while subdominant and subordinate logics influence behavior to a limited extent. The findings show that institutional logics are a function of contextual factors, such as historical events, technological changes and pandemics.

Originality/value

The study developed a typology that identifies vaccine manufacturing firm archetypes, institutional logics and their constellations underpinned by contextual factors. The findings have implications for firms and policymakers, as they may guide the end-to-end vaccine manufacturing interventions adapted for their regions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the process of scaling second-hand fashion and how different strategic paths develop over time. This is theoretically grounded in two distinct scaling logics synthesised from the literature: a process that includes strategies for organisational growth (breadth-scaling) and a process that influences change in formal and informal institutions (depth-scaling).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a process-based study based on the growth of a second-hand fashion retail organisation over 20 years. Qualitative materials such as interviews, observations and documents were collected and analysed.

Findings

The findings illustrate how a circular business model (CBM) can make use of a mix of strategies aiming for both organisational growth and impacting practices and habits within the fashion industry. Strategies building on breadth-scaling logic are found to be a prerequisite for engaging with depth-scaling strategies since they contribute to necessary resources and confidence, while depth-scaling secures future scaling opportunities by changing the conditions for scale.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the relatively scant literature on the process of scaling CBMs by exploring how different strategic paths unfold over time. The process-based approach, in combination with the two scaling logics, gives new insights into how CBMs go from niche to mainstream and thus influence the transition to a circular economy (CE).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to explicate how leaders’ knowledge hiding results in employees’ knowledge hiding. In addition, the study was intended to explore under what conditions leaders’ knowledge hiding affects employees’ moral disengagement more deleteriously.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 321 employees at three different times which were two months apart from each other. Structural equation modeling was used for data analysis.

Findings

The study found leaders’ knowledge hiding to be related to employee moral disengagement. In addition, the study found moral disengagement to affect employees’ knowledge-hiding behavior. Moral disengagement was found to mediate the relationship between leaders’ knowledge hiding and employees’ knowledge hiding. Finally, the study found that employees with high moral identity show more perseverance to preserve their moral engagement when led by knowledge-hiding leaders.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the study was first to establish a relationship between a leader’s knowledge hiding and employees’ moral disengagement. The study also established the mediating role of moral disengagement to work as a mediating mechanism linking leaders’ knowledge hiding to employees’ knowledge hiding. Finally, the study found that moral identity moderates the relationship between leaders’ knowledge hiding and employees’ moral disengagement.

Abstract

The United States experienced its own damaging attempt at secession between 1861 and 1865, and one would expect the US Government to condemn all secession attempts at home and abroad. This paper examines four cases of secession in sub-Saharan Africa and the US policy toward those independence movements: Katanga, Biafra, Eritrea, and South Sudan. The finding is that the American Government's policy toward fragmentation in other countries has surprisingly not been characterized by a condemnation of the secessionist movements. The US response has most often been tacit support or reluctant opposition to nascent independence movements, which always stopped short of full diplomatic recognition prior to 1991. Anticommunism also played a role in US foreign policy decisions regarding secession abroad during the Cold War but did not lead in any case examined to open political or military intervention.

Abstract

Purpose

By drawing on previous research on mechanism-based explanations and business-to-business engagement, the purpose of this study is to identify and define mechanisms that enhance Internet of Things (IoT) engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

By positioning the study within the paradigm of critical realism (CR), this paper used multiple case study research. This paper applied 12 in-depth, semi-structured interviews, an observation and firm documents as data-gathering tools.

Findings

This paper argues that the higher-level phenomenon (Institutional logic of the IoT ecosystem) leads to a higher-level outcome (IoT engagement). As lower-level situational mechanisms, this paper found IoT readiness and transparency in the ecosystem. Action-formation mechanisms were acknowledged as communication, availability of an IoT interface, and support. Commitment, trust, satisfaction and software maintenance and updates were recognized as transformational mechanisms.

Practical implications

The findings will help managers to understand which mechanisms to focus on when forming engagement strategies for onboarding new actors and strengthening relationships with existing actors. Furthermore, this paper suggests considering the IoT readiness of new actors more critically, as this mechanism was found to be the most crucial one for an early stage of engagement in an IoT ecosystem.

Originality/value

This study helps understand the causal structures behind engagement and enhances the theoretical and practical domain of IoT engagement. In addition, this study demonstrates the value of applying CR for generating knowledge about a phenomenon through causal explanations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to directly compare risk and protective factors of male and female gang-involved youth.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the 2022 Arizona Youth Survey data. Gang-involved boys and girls are compared through multivariate logistic regression analyses to examine the relationship between risk and protective factors and youth gang membership.

Findings

Multivariate analyses reveal significant differences in risk and protective factors between gang-involved boys and girls in connection with family conflict.

Practical implications

There is a need for semi-specialized prevention and intervention programming for male and female gang youth. Gang programs should emphasize addressing issues with family and home life more for girls than for boys. School-based gang programs need to similarly emphasize educational commitment and positive peer influence for both gang-involved boys and girls. Improving positive neighborhood attachment through community programming will be beneficial for reducing the likelihood of gang involvement for both girls and boys.

Originality/value

There is a need to improve comprehension of the similarities and differences among male and female gang youth. Few studies directly compare the two groups, and by focusing on risk/protective factors, the results can help to provide direct applications to existing intervention and prevention programming.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to contextualize the recently developed process of toxic leadership (PTL) model to international business (IB) intercultural (IC) contexts. This is important because of the potential for cultural conflict to compromise organizational spiritual capital, a crucial driver for success defined by the bottom-line and employee satisfaction. Thus, the paper addresses the gap that is imperative for practical societal reasons of realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), because the bottom-line is an important driver for international partnerships, a crucial element of SDG 17 and inclusivity is a contributing element of SDG 8 that pertains to decent work.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study design was adopted to facilitate modification of existing theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in Japanese (IB/IC) contexts to understand the lived experience of Japanese business leaders and host country managers (followers) in the USA and India. A social constructivist thematic analysis was deployed to examine the data.

Findings

Our study illustrates the degree to which the PTL model ports to IB situations, with a refinement on the workarounds for resistance by host country employees. The findings suggest that policymakers seduced by IB business market opportunities also need to address the dark side of these activities by ensuring proactive measures, such as language training and cross-cultural awareness, to ensure decent work as perceived by the follower.

Research limitations/implications

This research discusses implications for the evolving zeitgeist of human-centrism in organizations. Although the adopted subjectivist interpretivism presents a concomitant limitation of generalization, the research nevertheless successfully raises flags against the hegemonic positive assessment of the UN SDGs.

Practical implications

Connections to international subsidiary leadership selection are offered. Additionally, the research raises the specter of breach in leader–follower trust compromising organizational spiritual capital.

Social implications

Our research shows that society should consider potential misalignments with human centricity when promoting international partnerships, such as in the name of the UN SDG 17.

Originality/value

The PTL model is relatively new to leadership scholarship. The present paper is novel in extending it to IB’s intercultural contexts. Moreover, as an exemplar of its application, it challenges and adds nuance through adjustment and ambiguity to the generally positive assessment of Japanese leadership in the conventional leadership literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to compare the use of disgust and sadness – two negative emotions associated with different appraisals and information processing styles – in charity social marketing appeals.

Design/methodology/approach

An experiment (n = 247) examined effects when disgust or sad imagery was used alone versus when images were accompanied by information about the cause.

Findings

OLS regression results show including information reduced empathy when participants were exposed to sad images, replicating prior research on sadness in charity marketing. No similar effect was observed for disgust-evoking images. Although disgust images alone reduced empathy compared to sad images alone, disgust images paired with information were just as effective as sad images alone and sad images accompanied by information. Empathy mediated the relationship between exposure to each type of appeal and donations – this relationship was negative for sad images but not for disgust images accompanied by information.

Research limitations/implications

These findings suggest the use of disgust may help to mitigate the loss of empathy that occurs when individuals engage in deliberative tasks, such as reading information about a cause. They also illustrate how the distinct properties of discrete emotions can be used strategically to influence social marketing outcomes.

Originality/value

Existing research has compared disgust-evoking images to appeals using neutral, mildly disgusting or positive emotional imagery. This study compares disgust to sadness, a negative emotion commonly used in charity marketing, and considers interaction effects with informational elements of the appeal.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess the impact of sustainability consciousness, altruism and peer influence on sustainable consumption behaviour of young adults.

Design/methodology/approach

Structured questionnaires were administered to 452 undergraduate students attending public universities in the southern part of Ghana. Partial least square structural equation modelling was used to test and analyse the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

Findings from this study indicate that sustainability consciousness and altruism significantly influence sustainable consumption. The respondents also suggest that their association with peers does not significantly affect sustainable consumption. Finally, the outcome of the analysis revealed that altruism partially mediates the nexus between sustainability consciousness and sustainable consumption.

Originality/value

The research directs attention to how the behaviour of undergraduate students who are sympathetic to the environment may influence their consumption behaviours. This study also demonstrates that sustainability awareness and knowledge by individuals play a vital role in shaping consumption behaviour, which may ultimately preserve resources for future generations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores social entrepreneurship as a viable career path for employees facing hostile workplace conditions in Peru. It examines the gender-specific effects of workplace challenges such as hostility, discrimination and sexual harassment on individuals’ aspirations for career transitions and entrepreneurship.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 450 Peruvian workers experiencing adverse workplace conditions. Quantitative data analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between perceived workplace challenges, intentions to leave current jobs and the propensity to pursue social entrepreneurship. Gender differences were analyzed to uncover unique patterns in these relationships.

Findings

Results reveal significant gender differences: females report higher levels of discrimination, while males report higher perceptions of workplace harassment. Females intending to leave their jobs demonstrated a stronger inclination toward social entrepreneurship compared to their male counterparts. These findings underline the detrimental impact of hostile work environments on employee aspirations and highlight social entrepreneurship as a meaningful career option for individuals seeking to address societal issues.

Practical implications

This research offers valuable insights for organizations and policymakers, emphasizing the importance of creating equitable work environments. It also underscores the potential of social entrepreneurship to empower individuals disillusioned by conventional workplace structures to drive positive social change.

Originality/value

By elucidating the role of social entrepreneurship as an alternative career path, our study contributes to the growing body of literature on entrepreneurship and social impact, offering valuable insights for both researchers and practitioners aiming to foster more equitable and empowering work environments.
