Abstract

Purpose

The current research study aims to explore the rising appeal of creative industry for institutionally embedded women entrepreneurs of rural Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative research methodology is adopted to conduct the research study. Primary data is collected through in-depth interviews with 38 women entrepreneurs working in two sectors of creative industry in rural Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Findings

The research study explored creative industry as the most informal, non-traditional, low cost, flexible and convenient business sector for institutionally embedded Pukhtoon women entrepreneurs of rural KP.

Practical implications

The study draws the attention of policymakers and government to consider the informal norms in which women entrepreneurship is deeply embedded, while making entrepreneurship development policies and programs. The research study drives the attention of government toward making entrepreneurial education and training facilities easily available so that the skill and talent of women entrepreneurs can be more polished and enhanced. It further suggests that if the policymakers and Government of Pakistan take positive initiations and recognize the paramount importance, the creative industry of Pakistan has the potential of contributing toward uplifting of the economy.

Originality/value

The study helps in identifying the prevailing social and cultural norms in KP that shapes the choice of women entrepreneurs toward entrepreneurship in creative industry. It emphasizes to understand the reasons, for which women in KP, opt to open their entrepreneurial ventures in creative industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the interrelationships between social media marketing activities, self-brand connections, brand equity, trust and loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 402 valid responses were collected from Amazon MTurk, and the data were subjected to partial least squares structural equation modeling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA).

Findings

Findings indicate that social media marketing activities strongly and positively influence self-brand connection, brand equity and brand trust. Moreover, brand loyalty was strongly and positively influenced by self-brand connection, brand equity and brand trust. Moreover, the findings from fsQCA indicate that three causal paths lead to a high level of brand loyalty, and one causal path determines a low level of brand loyalty.

Originality/value

This research extends current knowledge by bridging the literature between social media marketing activities and branding using self-brand connections. Additionally, this study uses the strength of two complimentary methods – symmetrical and asymmetrical modeling – to uncover how social media marketing activities bridge customer-brand relationships.

Este estudio examina las interrelaciones entre las actividades de marketing en redes sociales, las conexiones de marca propia, el valor de la marca, la confianza y la lealtad.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Se recopilaron 402 respuestas válidas de Amazon MTurk, y los datos fueron sometidos a PLS-SEM y análisis cualitativo comparativo con conjuntos difusos (fsQCA).

Resultados

Los resultados indican que las actividades de marketing en redes sociales influyen fuertemente y de manera positiva en la conexión de marca propia, el valor de la marca y la confianza en la marca. Además, la lealtad a la marca es influenciada fuerte y positivamente por la conexión de marca propia, el valor de la marca y la confianza en la marca. Además, los resultados de fsQCA indican que tres vías causales conducen a un alto nivel de lealtad a la marca, y una determina un bajo nivel de lealtad a la marca.

Originalidad

Esta investigación amplía el conocimiento actual al vincular la literatura entre las actividades de marketing en redes sociales y el branding utilizando conexiones de marca propia. Además, este estudio utiliza dos métodos complementarios – modelado simétrico y asimétrico – para descubrir cómo las actividades de marketing en redes sociales construyen las relaciones entre cliente y marca.

Abstract

Purpose

Taking the support of social capital theory and conservation of resource theory, the present study explores the mediating role of rumination and moderating role of mindfulness in the relationship of workplace ostracism (WO) and workplace withdrawal (WW).

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected in two waves from 467 employees working in hotels located in Delhi NCR region of India. The hypothesised relationships were investigated by macro-PROCESS (Hayes, 2013).

Findings

The results found a mediating impact of rumination on WO and WW relationship. It further supported the moderating effect of mindfulness in weakening the association between WO and WW via rumination.

Practical implications

This study identified mindfulness as an essential mechanism by which WO may be regulated to control employee's tendency to ruminate. Rumination may initially be prevented in organisations by regulating the primary effect of WO on employees' decisions for WW.

Originality/value

By linking the research model with the social capital theory, the study has contributed to the existing body of knowledge. The study is the first of its kind in India to examine the impact of hypothesised associations on the hotel industry. The findings of the study would help the industry in understanding the role of mindfulness in reducing aberrant behaviours at workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the effect of the spiritual leadership of the leaders in a consulting team on psychological safety climate and team innovation. Moreover, our research adopts the contingency theory of leadership to investigate whether the effect of spiritual leadership on psychological safety climate and team innovation could be moderated by personal characteristics of team members in terms of occupational self-efficacy.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were obtained from 229 team members across 24 consulting firms in Bangkok. To minimize common method bias, team innovation was assessed by team leaders while other variables were assessed by team members. We used Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling to analyze the data.

Findings

The analysis supports the positive effect of spiritual leadership on psychological safety climate and team innovation. Psychological safety climate also mediates the effect of spiritual leadership on team innovation. Lastly, the moderating effect analysis shows that the spiritual leadership of the team leaders exerts a weaker influence on the psychological safety climate and team innovation when team members exhibit high levels of occupational self-efficacy.

Practical implications

Because spiritual leadership plays a significant role in boosting team innovation through the creation of a psychologically safe climate, the consulting firms can provide a leadership development program to help their team leaders to gain insight into the nature of spiritual leadership and learn how to demonstrate appropriate behaviors when they supervise a team. In particular, this policy recommendation is highly relevant when team leaders supervise members who exhibit low occupational self-efficacy.

Originality/value

Our findings not only illustrate that spiritual leadership could enhance team innovation through the mediating role of psychological safety climate, but the level of occupational self-efficacy of the team members could significantly reduce the effects of spiritual leadership on psychological safety climate and team innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships between shared leadership, psychological contract, felt obligation and employees’ creative deviance as well as to investigate the mediating role of psychological contract and the moderating role of felt obligation in these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used convenience sampling to obtain longitudinal data collected (interval of one week) from 348 frontline hotel employees. The SPSS Process Model 5 was used to test the moderated mediation model.

Findings

The results indicated that shared leadership has a significant positive impact on both employee creative deviance and psychological contract and psychological contract positively influences creative deviance. The results confirmed that the psychological contract mediated the relationship between shared leadership and employee creative deviance. The study also highlighted the moderating role of felt obligation on the relationship between shared leadership and employee creative deviance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on shared leadership, psychological contract, felt obligation and creative deviance by providing empirical evidence of the mediating and moderating effects of psychological contract and felt obligation on the relationship between shared leadership and employee creative deviance. The findings offer practical insights into how organizations can leverage shared leadership to enhance employee creative deviance through psychological contract and felt obligation.

Abstract

Purpose

The detrimental impact of data breaches on organizations and their customers has been well documented in the literature. These breaches expose sensitive information, raising concerns about reputational damage and substantial financial losses for affected firms. Prior research has consistently demonstrated the significant financial repercussions of data breach disclosures, with a significant decline in the market value of breached firms following the incident’s revelation. However, recent literature has documented the shift in consumer perception toward data breaches, warranting a revisit of this important and relevant issue with more recent data. This study aims to revisit the cost of data breach disclosures by empirically analyzing the impact of recent data breach incidents on the market value of affected firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collect the data regarding data breach incidents among publicly traded companies in the USA listed in the S&P 500 index from 2013 to 2021. The empirical analysis relies on the event study approach, and the market value of each firm is estimated using the Fama-French three-factor model.

Findings

This study finds that the negative market reaction to data breach announcements in recent years has been significantly weaker than those reported in prior works from the past decade. This result confirms the shift in consumer perception toward data breaches in the market.

Originality/value

While prior research has quantified the cost of data breach disclosures, the authors posit that a renewed examination is essential within the contemporary digital environment. Consumer behavior and market sentiment have undergone significant transformations in recent years, necessitating a revisit of this important issue with updated data. This study not only documents this evolving phenomenon but also yields crucial policy recommendations. Notably, it challenges the conventional wisdom to rely on market forces as an adequate deterrent against data breaches. Consequently, updated regulations may be necessary to effectively navigate the complexities of the evolving digital landscape.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the increasing numbers of research studies about social media business, the concept of social media agility is still an emerging topic that has been understudied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of social media agility on business performance by using a sample of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand. Moreover, this study explored whether the effect of social media agility on business performance could be moderated by the characteristic of firm in terms of size, as well as the characteristic of market environment in terms of environmental dynamism.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample of 337 firms was obtained from the business directory using the simple random sampling method, and the model assessment was performed by using partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The data analysis indicated that social media agility positively affected the business performance of SMEs. Moreover, the moderating effect analysis showed that smaller firms tended to gain higher business performance from social media agility than larger firms. In addition, social media agility positively affected business performance to a greater extent when firms operated under low environmental dynamism than when they operated under high environmental dynamism.

Practical implications

Because SMEs are the key driving of economic development and economic growth, the recommendations from this study could be helpful for the government sector responsible for the competency development of SMEs to offer a development program that might enable entrepreneurial firms to develop social media marketing competencies and enhance their potential to be successful in the digital transformation.

Originality/value

The authors found new evidence showing that the degree to which social media agility affected business performance depended significantly on the firm characteristics in terms of firm size, as well as the environmental factor in terms of environmental dynamism. These findings provide valuable contributions to the existing literature that still lacks evidence about the moderating conditions that could increase or reduce the benefits that firms obtain from social media agility.

Abstract

Purpose

In this digital age, the rapid technological innovation and adoption, with the increasing use of big data analytics, has raised concerns about the ability of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to sustain the competition and innovation performance (IP). To narrow the research gap, this paper investigates the role of big data analytics capability (BDAC) in moderating the relationship between digital innovation (DI) and SME innovation performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This research has been carried forward through a detailed theory and literature analysis. Data were analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation models using a two-stage approach in smartPLS-4.

Findings

Results highlight that digital service capability (DSC) significantly mediates the relationship between DI and IP. Additionally, value co-creation (VCC) directly affects digital transformation (DT), while DI has a stronger effect on DSC than IP. Furthermore, BDAC significantly moderates the relation between DSC → IP and DT → IP, whereas it has a detrimental effect on the relation between DI and IP. In addition to that, VCC, DSC, DT, DI and BDAC have a direct, significant and positive effect on IP.

Practical implications

This research was motivated by the practical relevance of supporting SMEs in adopting DT and the resource-based view (RBV) and technology acceptance model (TAM). This study shows that all direct and indirect measures significantly affect innovation performance, including BDAC as moderator. These findings refresh the perspective on what DT, DI, VCC, DSC and BDAC can bring to a firm's innovation performance.

Originality/value

This paper has contributed to DT by empirically validating a theoretical argument that suggests the acceptance and adoption of new technology. This paper aims to fill theoretical gaps in understanding BDAC and DT by incorporating the RBV and TAM theories on BDAC and DT.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine desirable post-adoption outcomes related to food delivery apps using the involvement-commitment model (ICM) and the boundary of (Islamic) religiosity, which is an important facet of communities in many parts of the world today. Importantly, the study provides an in-depth understanding of the boundary role of religiosity in the links between involvement, commitment, resistance to negative information and advocacy intention in relation to food delivery app use.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collected from 498 respondents in Saudi Arabia was used to test the research hypothesized model.

Findings

The results from the partial least squares structural equation modeling technique lend credence to past research calling for the contextualization of theories, especially since this paper find religiosity to be an important boundary condition to the ICM in relation to food delivery apps in an Arab nation.

Originality/value

This paper focuses specifically on the ICM and the boundary of (Islamic) religiosity. The cardinal contribution of this study, therefore, lies in the contextualization of ICM within the Arab world concerning post-adoption behavior related to food delivery apps. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is likely the first study to do so in the marketing, hospitality and technology-based literatures.

Abstract

Purpose

The subject of gender inequality has been approached by academics of various fields – psychologists, political scientists, developmental economists, feminists, sociologists, among others. Although there is a considerable amount of evidence indicating the presence of gender bias in various aspects of educational and work life in Muslim countries, not many studies have attempted to understand the female perspective during extra- and co-curricular activities in higher education institutions (HEIs) and their coping strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

A critical grounded theory approach was used.

Findings

The findings indicate that the role of female “religio-socio-cultural” stereotypes mutually reinforces each other to perpetuate an uneven playing field. Females have evolved many strategies to cope, including creation of sub-private spheres within larger public spheres and restricting their interactions to specific strata within the public sphere.

Originality/value

The study provides a female perspective regarding participation during extra- and co-curricular activities in a HEI in a Muslim majority context using critical grounded theory.
