Abstract
Purpose
The use of statistical methods in the field of real estate appraisals presents a trade-off between the efficiency of the estimates (that would require the use of sophisticate econometric models) and the ease of the economic interpretation of the outcomes (that characterises the hedonic pricing models). This paper shows that multilevel modelling (MLM) can represent a suitable solution to this trade-off.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses the so-called “multilevel modelling” (henceforth MLM). MLM can represent a further step forward in the use of statistical methods in property appraisals. MLM is easy to implement and the MLM estimates have a clear economic meaning. Furthermore, MLM provides more efficient estimates of hedonic prices (the prices of housing attributes) with respect to standard hedonic pricing models. Finally, MLM is particularly suitable for the housing market analysis, where the feature “location” plays a key role.
Findings
For the Italian context, characterised by many “benchmark locations” (small municipalities that share similar geographic, historic, and socioeconomic characteristics), the paper finds that multilevel modelling (MLM) is needed to correctly estimate the hedonic prices also in a micro-area.
Practical implications
MLM allows to further enhance the key role of “location”. Location is indeed used as the “grouping variable” in MLM, instead of being treated as a generic housing attribute in hedonic pricing models. When the benchmark locations are many, therefore, MLM represents a very effective compromise between the estimates’ efficiency and the ease of outcomes’ economic interpretation.
Originality/value
Unlike the related literature that, basically, use MLM to investigate what are the main determinants (levels) of housing prices, this paper uses MLM to make more efficient the estimation of hedonic prices.

Abstract
Purpose
Using descriptions from participants of ten Australian Football League (AFL) Club boards, the authors offer a rare, in-depth account of board member perceptions of interpersonal relationships between board members and the relational conflict evident. These findings suggest that interpersonal behaviours related to egos, social awareness, transparency and trust, ultimately leads to dysfunctional conflict.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper examined the leadership influence on board dysfunctional conflict using the concept of authentic leadership (AL). The authors dismantled board member interpersonal dynamics to explore whether AL may alleviate the issues associated with dysfunctional relational conflict.
Findings
In addition, we highlighted the President has a key leadership role, whereby if they are characterised by AL attributes, they can facilitate higher levels of trust amongst board members and ultimately minimise board fragmentation.
Originality/value
Practically, our findings assist boards to identify some of the behavioural antecedents to dysfunctional relationships, therefore assisting leaders to attenuate their influence on board fragmentation and improve board functioning.

Abstract
We use data from millions of online job postings to construct monthly estimates of annual growth in advertised wages in the US, UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain from 2019 to 2022. The resulting wage growth tracker is a source of timely and forward-looking data on the wages of the marginal worker and serves as a useful leading indicator of momentum in wage dynamics. We show that the online job postings data benchmarks well against official sources on job vacancies, new hires, and wage levels. In both Europe and the US, growth in advertised wages accelerated sharply after the pandemic. Granular data shows a heterogeneous pattern of post-pandemic wage growth, with lower-paid jobs experiencing stronger wage growth in most of the countries in our sample. We attribute this to stronger labor demand for lower-paid jobs coming out of the pandemic.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper investigates the impact of various leadership styles on the professionalization and subsequent performance of family businesses.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a survey method and employing a partial least squares approach to structural equation modeling, we tested our model and analyzed the collected data based on the responses of 216 managers in Iran.
Findings
Our research demonstrates that professionalization mediates the relationship between leadership style and performance. Moreover, our findings show that the participative leadership style is the most effective option for family businesses seeking to achieve professionalization and improve performance.
Research limitations/implications
First, the sample used in this study was drawn from a single country, namely Iran. Second, although we adhered to established practices for measuring financial performance, future research could explore alternative dimensions of performance, including non-financial goals. Third, we did not investigate the impact of different leadership styles on each dimension of professionalization.
Practical implications
These findings provide valuable insights for family business managers seeking to adopt a suitable leadership style to achieve professional management and realize favorable outcomes.
Originality/value
Our study suggests that examining the potential impact of leadership styles on professionalization can provide clarity amidst mixed findings regarding the influence of professionalization on firm performance. Additionally, we challenge the oversimplified categorization of professionalization and argue for a multifaceted view, contending that professionalization comprises various dimensions acting concurrently and potentially mediates the effect of leadership styles on family business performance.

Abstract
Perverse instantiation is one of many hypothetical failure modes of AI, specifically one in which the AI fulfils the command given to it by its principal in a way which is both unforeseen and harmful. A lot is already said about perverse instantiation itself, especially when such a failure mode presents an existential risk, as would be the case with a superintelligent AI. However novel these disaster scenarios may be, similar fictional cautionary tales already exist in many cultures: tragic stories about misinterpreted prophecies and grand wishes gone awry, from Croesus to Macbeth. Analysis of both old and new tales of perverse instantiation reveals that the core of the issue is an ancient philosophical and logical problem that even Socrates faced: the problem of defining terms. Unlike the Socratic problem, which focused on finding a good intensional definition, perverse instantiation encompasses problems that arise from both badly defined intension of terms (their internal content) and badly defined extension of terms (their range of applicability). However, models of machine learning that use vast amounts of training data hold the promise of resolving the issue of badly defined extension of terms. The issue of defining intension of terms remains. Further parallels can be found between scenarios of perverse instantiation and Socrates' dialogues with obstinate sophists, such as importance of philosophical reflection and discussion. This indicates that our future challenges in working with AI may still have a lot to do with retracing Socrates' steps.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to uncover the constraints of automation and the affordances of augmentation related to implementing artificial intelligence (AI)-powered systems across different task types: mechanical, thinking and feeling.
Design/methodology/approach
Qualitative study involving 45 interviews with various stakeholders in artistic gymnastics, for which AI-powered systems for the judging process are currently developed and tested. Stakeholders include judges, gymnasts, coaches and a technology vendor.
Findings
We identify perceived constraints of automation, such as too much mechanization, preciseness and inability of the system to evaluate artistry or to provide human interaction. Moreover, we find that the complexity and impreciseness of the rules prevent automation. In addition, we identify affordances of augmentation such as speedier, fault-less, more accurate and objective evaluation. Moreover, augmentation affords to provide an explanation, which in turn may decrease the number of decision disputes.
Research limitations/implications
While the unique context of our study is revealing, the generalizability of our specific findings still needs to be established. However, the approach of considering task types is readily applicable in other contexts.
Practical implications
Our research provides useful insights for organizations that consider implementing AI for evaluation in terms of possible constraints, risks and implications of automation for the organizational practices and human agents while suggesting augmented AI-human work as a more beneficial approach in the long term.
Originality/value
Our granular approach provides a novel point of view on AI implementation, as our findings challenge the notion of full automation of mechanical and partial automation of thinking tasks. Therefore, we put forward augmentation as the most viable AI implementation approach. In addition, we developed a rich understanding of the perception of various stakeholders with a similar institutional background, which responds to recent calls in socio-technical research.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify how internal marketing can be used to increase the satisfaction and retention of Generation Z employees within the global banking sector, and the changes which organizations must make to their internal marketing strategies to achieve these outcomes.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper adopts a qualitative, cross-sectional and descriptive research methodology. Data are collected through individual and focus group interviews of 38 Generation Z banking employees and of 28 older colleagues engaged in internal marketing. Thematic coding is undertaken using template analysis.
Findings
The results indicate clearly that Generation Z employees have different expectations of internal marketing from previous generations. Specifically, they demand more inclusive tones and interactive methods of communication, validation of their choice of employer and industry, and greater levels of interaction and inclusivity within internal marketing initiatives.
Originality/value
This is the first study to analyse how internal marketing in the banking sector must evolve to meet the needs of its Generation Z employees. This is critical as Generation Z is the world’s largest generational population, will staff almost all entry-level roles by 2030, and already has half its population in the workplace.

However, boundaries for the review are imperative to ascertain the most productive use of resources, aligned with the case’s chance of eventual resolution. The purpose of the study is to identify the boundaries established by police forces within England and Wales for their reviews of cold cases. Due to the lack of guidance, forces have created their own methods which may result in ineffective review processes and strategies. Therefore, this study sought to elucidate the boundaries of the review process through 13 semi-structured interviews with cold case detectives and a seven-month observation period (analysed simultaneously using an inductive Thematic Analysis), the following boundaries were identified before the review commences: the Terms of Reference (which provide a framework for the review based on live homicide review criteria), the identification of the review type (either a full or thematic review) and justification of the case’s prioritisation. This study provides initial evidence that there is an interconnectedness of procedures underpinning the reviews of cold cases, with the Terms of Reference dictating the type of review to be conducted, which is subsequently influenced by the case’s prioritisation. This study provides an important insight into the boundaries of reviews, and recognises the challenges for their implementation, attributed primarily to available resources and the number of cases that a force is responsible for. Important recommendations are proposed for the ongoing practice of cold case reviews to provide areas of evaluation and improved practice.
