The chapter explored the critical components, challenges, and technological advancements in construction supply chain management (CSCM), focusing on stealth construction (STC). It delved into STC encompassing nature, highlighting its unique challenges in its supply chain management and the necessity for adaptive technologies. This chapter explored health and safety considerations in stealth construction, emphasising the integration of advanced technologies and innovative practices. It commences with a general introduction, followed by a historical overview of safety practices in the construction industry, highlighting the evolution of a safety culture. The chapter examined various health and safety management techniques, including policy formulation, safety training programs, and job safety analysis. Additionally, it discussed current trends such as wearable technology, IoT, VR/AR, and predictive analytics. The unique requirements of stealth construction are addressed, focusing on building cross-section design, visibility, application of radio frequency emission and countermeasures. Abstract

This chapter investigated tendering in stealth construction, emphasising innovative approaches and methodologies that prioritise environmental protection, safety, efficiency, and aesthetics. It began with an overview of the construction industry’s tendering processes, followed by an in-depth examination of various tendering types, including competitive and negotiated methods. The study highlighted contemporary trends such as electronic tendering, Building Information Modelling (BIM), green and sustainable procurement, risk management, data analytics, artificial intelligence, lean construction practices, and blockchain technology. Moreover, with a specific focus on stealth construction, the chapter further analysed certain criteria, including building cross-section development, visibility, radio frequency emission, and countermeasures. It explored integrating functional construction systems, including environmental, safety, health, and quality management. Additionally, it discussed methods like green building, modular construction, and low-impact techniques. Abstract

Purpose

In response to the worsening environmental crisis, there have been multiple calls for sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) scholars and practitioners to adopt a “business-not-as-usual” approach based on justice, fairness, equity and sustainability. We add to this literature by proposing environmental justice (EJ) as a key concept for the theory and practice of SSCM.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual article builds SSCM theory on EJ and contributes to supply chain justice research and practice by introducing the concept of the “environmentally just supply chain” and presenting pathways for operationalizing it in practice.

Findings

Three pathways are proposed to leverage transformative SSCM to create environmentally just supply chains: human rights due diligence, resilience thinking and coproduction of environmentally just supply chains.

Practical implications

The three pathways can be used by actors within a supply chain to create environmentally just supply chains.

Originality/value

This article extends transformative, non-instrumental perspectives on environmental sustainability within SSCM scholarship to provide insights into how supply chains can be transformed through EJ. Not only does the article show the relevance of EJ for SSCM theory and practice, but it elaborates pathways for moving from harm reduction to transformative sustainability actions.

Abstract

Coparenting is a complex construct showing the quality of parental beliefs, motives, and actions related to cooperation in the child-rearing process. Its important role has been proven in child development and in shaping parents’ quality of life outcomes or marital satisfaction. This chapter presents the results of a study aimed at exploring the significance of selected parenting and child-related variables for the various components of coparenting in families with a child with disabilities. Material was collected in a group of 118 parenting couples using The Coparenting Relationship Scale. It was found that fathers scored higher in Coparenting Undermining and Endorse Partner Parenting. The variable of education was significant: parents with higher education showed the highest parental compatibility, and mothers also showed relatively highest satisfaction with the division of responsibilities. Parental age, age, and gender of the child with a disability were not significant. Difficult behaviors in the child correlated negatively with favorable coparenting components in parents and positively with unfavorable ones. Functional status was negatively associated with Coparenting Agreement and Endorse Partner in fathers. The complementarity of parental roles must be taken into account in the process of specialized support from psychologists, school counselors, social workers, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

This study uses data from the National Financial Capability Study to examine the financial vulnerability of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults relative to that of other major racial/ethnic groups in the United States across the past decade and within the AAPI population, examining how vulnerability varied across AAPI adults of East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander heritage.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses four waves (2012, 2015, 2018 and 2021) of the State-by-State National Financial Capability Study (NFCS) and the 2021 NFCS AAPI Oversample dataset. Financial vulnerability was estimated using five binary indicators: (1) An inability to come up with $2,000, (2) An experience of overdraw, (3) A lack of emergency fund savings, (4) Difficulty paying bills and expenses, and (5) Credit card revolving. A financial vulnerability index was also created using the binary indicators. Logistic regression analyses were conducted on binary indicators and an OLS regression was additionally conducted on the aggregated financial vulnerability index.

Findings

Results show that, overall, AAPI respondents reported the lowest levels of financial vulnerability relative to White respondents, Black respondents, Hispanic respondents, and those of another race or ethnicity. However, using the 2021 datasets, we found that within the AAPI population, financial vulnerability varied widely by heritage, with those of East Asian heritage reporting less vulnerability than AAPI adults of other studied heritage groups.

Originality/value

These results provide insights into the financial well-being of AAPI households, particularly amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and present initial evidence of the significant disparities that exist within this heterogenous community. This study provides valuable insights for researchers, educators, policymakers, and financial practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of interviews for data collection is prevalent in qualitative accounting research. This paper examines vignettes – sketches of hypothetical scenarios – as a promising complementary way to conduct interviews in qualitative accounting research.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on our experiences designing and using vignettes in five separate qualitative accounting studies, which collectively involve over 200 interviews with various participants. It discusses the opportunities the use of vignettes in interviews offers to qualitative accounting research, as well as the challenges associated with designing and using vignettes. The paper also reflects on fellow researchers’ varied reactions during seminars, workshops, and the journal review process.

Findings

Vignettes emerge as a productive and engaging complementary way for accounting researchers to obtain additional insights and perspectives not usually accessible in semi-structured interviews. The paper also provides practical insights into developing, using and publishing qualitative accounting studies using vignettes, contributing an additional behind-the-scenes view of using qualitative research methods.

Originality/value

The aim of this paper is to increase awareness of vignettes as a complement to the standard qualitative accounting interview. It provides guidance on how vignettes might be used productively for studying rare, new, emerging, complex, or multi-period real-world accounting phenomena. It also discusses how vignettes can promote transparency, honesty, and a greater level of detail in participants’ responses, as well as facilitate the involvement of lay people in accounting studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The circular economy (CE) has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its potential in combining the economic growth positively with businesses, society and the environment simultaneously. The purpose of this review is to provide a concise summary of the existing literature regarding how CE strategies can help mitigate climate change.

Methodology

A comprehensive review of extant literature is undertaken on the topic of CE and climate change. Six sectors are explored in this chapter; although these sectors are different, but still, they are interdependent and are not completely separate.

Findings

Thorough study of literature reveals that the energy, transport and manufacturing sectors have the greatest potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while the waste and building sector have a moderate potential for savings. The agriculture sector, on the other hand, is predicted to have the lowest potential for savings.

Implications

This chapter provides implications for achieving a sustainable future in terms of economic growth, social harmony and environment conditions by developing efficient and affordable methods to achieve the goal of CE.

Originality

This chapter is a unique endeavour to explore the intricate relationship between CE and climate change. Although both concepts have been explored individually by various studies, but our study is one of the few attempts made to emphasise the crucial role of CE to mitigate the climate change.
