Abstract

Purpose

The issue of evaluating the dynamic characteristics of a bridge due to the presence of rapidly moving vehicles has considerable importance. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive study on the variables that influence the dynamic behavior of a thin-walled box-girder bridge exposed to high-speed train loads using regression analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The high-speed train is mathematically represented by a system with 38 degrees of freedom (DOF), while the sub-track system uses China’s Railway Track System slab track. The numerical modeling of the bridge is accomplished using computationally efficient finite elements that represent thin-walled box-beams. The rail’s imperfections are also accounted for, and they are represented using a power spectral density function. The dynamic response of the bridge is calculated using the Newmark-beta technique, considering several DOFs and stress resultants.

Findings

A thorough parametric analysis of the factors affecting the dynamic response of the bridge is conducted and a regression model has been proposed. The regression equation yields an excellent fit for shear force, distortional moment and distortional bimoment, with an R2 value near 1. It has also been observed that the range of the coefficient R2 in case of bending moment, torsion, torsional bimoment and vertical deflection typically falls between 0.82 and 0.9. R2 value near to 1 indicates that it is quite accurate in forecasting the dynamic influence of high-speed trains on the bridge’s response.

Originality/value

The originality of this research lies in pioneering the regression modeling of dynamic responses in thin-walled box-girder bridges and uniquely modeling high-speed trains with 38 DOF, which has not been previously explored in existing studies.

Abstract

Purpose

Wellness tourism is growing in importance as increasing numbers of travelers place a priority on their health and well-being by traveling. This study examined the relationships between wellness tourism destination attributes, perceived quality, perceived mental health, eudaimonic well-being, overall satisfaction and behavioral loyalty to corroborate a model explaining wellness tourism destination loyalty in Thailand.

Design/methodology/approach

The conceptual model of this study was examined using a survey research design. The survey questionnaire was distributed to Chinese tourists who had previously traveled to Thailand and engaged in wellness tourism activities during their trip.

Findings

The findings revealed that healthful food choices, core facilities and staff service significantly influenced perceived quality. This perceived quality was a crucial factor in determining perceived mental health, which in turn impacted eudaimonic well-being. Overall satisfaction was directly influenced by perceived quality, perceived mental health and eudaimonic well-being. Additionally, perceived quality had a direct effect on behavioral loyalty.

Practical implications

With the growing global interest in wellness and travel, this study offers valuable insights for tourism marketers in Thailand to enhance their wellness tourism strategies. Tourism organizations should emphasize the quality of food, facilities and staff service to attract wellness-oriented travelers.

Originality/value

This study highlights the interconnectedness of perceived quality, good mental health and eudaimonic well-being. High-quality experiences contribute to improved mental health and in turn enhance eudaimonic well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

The first aim of this paper was to discuss the learning experience of university students who participated in a service-learning project on sustainable water management. By investigating the students’ engagement in a real-world, community-based project, this study also aimed to provide insights into the effectiveness of service-learning as a pedagogical approach for sustainable development education.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presented a service-learning project organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on improving water quality in low-income communities. An overview of the project was provided, including the curriculum design, project contents, implementation process, as well as students’ assessments, evaluation and feedback. Based on students’ assessments, the outcomes and impacts of this project were discussed. Additionally, several barriers were identified during this project, and corresponding suggestions were proposed to improve the service quality and increase its positive impacts.

Findings

The students established 12 water filtration systems to improve the water quality in a needy village overseas. Apart from the benefits to the service recipients, the participating students experienced personal development and civic engagement measured in 10 aspects, including the application of classroom learning, adaptive problem-solving, creative thinking, community contribution, commitment to helping the disadvantaged, empathy and compassion, concern for those in need, moral commitment to civic affairs, multi-perspective analysis and informed decision-making.

Originality/value

Although the recorded project was not the first international service-learning project on water sustainable management, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that the whole procedure of the service-learning project was documented as a compulsory credit-bearing subject in Hong Kong universities. With the water sustainability project example, this paper shows how to integrate service-learning subjects into university curricula and what benefits and challenges they could bring.

Abstract

Purpose

Heterogeneous graphs, composed of diverse nodes and edges, are prevalent in real-world applications and effectively model complex web-based relational networks, such as social media, e-commerce and knowledge graphs. As a crucial data source in heterogeneous networks, Node attribute information plays a vital role in Web data mining. Analyzing and leveraging node attributes is essential in heterogeneous network representation learning. In this context, this paper aims to propose a novel attribute-aware heterogeneous information network representation learning algorithm, AAHIN, which incorporates two key strategies: an attribute information coverage-aware random walk strategy and a node-influence-based attribute aggregation strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the transition probability of the next node is determined by comparing the attribute similarity between historical nodes and prewalk nodes in a random walk, and nodes with dissimilar attributes are selected to increase the information coverage of different attributes. Then, the representation is enhanced by aggregating the attribute information of different types of high-order neighbors. Additionally, the neighbor attribute information is aggregated by emphasizing the varying influence of each neighbor node.

Findings

This paper conducted comprehensive experiments on three real heterogeneous attribute networks, highlighting the superior performance of the AAHIN model over other baseline methods.

Originality/value

This paper proposes an attribute-aware random walk strategy to enhance attribute coverage and walk randomness, improving the quality of walk sequences. A node-influence-based attribute aggregation method is introduced, aggregating neighboring node attributes while preserving the information from different types of high-order neighbors.

Abstract

Purpose

Prefabricated building (PB) has been a pivotal force in advancing global building industrialization and sustainability. However, the PB supply chain operation faces significant challenges of exhausting negotiations, poor communication and imperfect information, representing high transaction costs (TCs). Existing literature inadequately addresses governance behaviors to mitigate TCs. This study aims to explore PB supply chain inefficiencies through the lens of TC theory, examining the nuanced relationships between hybrid governance behaviors and TCs and exploring effective governance strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the theoretical frameworks of governance behavior and TCs, this study employed semi-structured interviews and questionnaire surveys with PB experts in Anhui, China. Subsequently, integrated backpropagation neural network and ordered logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify critical governance behaviors and explore boundaries for TCs reduction.

Findings

TCs of the PB supply chain are elevated (1) from communication and coordination; (2) during the construction and approval stages. Investigation of how governance behaviors influence the TCs indicated that (1) enterprises exert more influence than local governments; (2) governance effectiveness in the transaction and transaction environment dimensions outweighs stakeholder influence and (3) functional TCs exist in PB, associated with component manufacturing, PB contract negotiation and learning cost.

Originality/value

This study extends understanding of TCs in PB by providing nuanced insights into the nature and timing of TCs and elucidates how governance structures shape TCs. Functional TCs intrinsic to PB were identified when exploring the optimization boundaries. These insights equip local governments and enterprises with actionable knowledge to prioritize effective governance behaviors and measures.

Abstract

Purpose

Since the COVID-19 epidemic, the number of restaurant service quality studies has continued to increase. However, until now, there has not been an overall perspective or accurate instructions for research on restaurant service quality and experiential value enhancement. This study conducts multiple comparison studies to discover differences between consumer-perceived service quality and satisfaction perspectives on hotel fine dining and chain restaurants.

Design/methodology/approach

This study integrates a hotel’s fine dining and chain restaurant to obtain 636 participants (e.g. Study 1 has 318 hotel fine dining customers; Study 2 has 318 chain restaurant customers), mainly expanding the SERVQUAL model and stimulus–organism–response (S–O–R) theory.

Findings

The results of Study 1 show that value co-creation has a mediating effect on the relationship between service quality and satisfaction. In addition, customer experiences have a significant moderating effect on customer satisfaction. The outcomes of Study 2 showed that experiential value has a significant mediating effect on the relationship between service quality and satisfaction. In addition, customer relationship quality is a critical criterion in regulating the process of experience value delivery.

Practical implications

Hotels’ fine dining should pay attention to the item risk in the value co-creation factor, while chain restaurants should enhance the item service excellence in the experiential value factor to satisfy the changing customer requirements.

Originality/value

This study provides several alternative models to verify the robustness of the empirical results.

Abstract

Purpose

Biofortification is a promising strategy for addressing malnutrition and food insecurity by enriching staple crops with nutrients. However, farmers’ adoption is crucial for their success. This study aims to shed light on Ethiopian farmers' intentions to adopt biofortified orange-fleshed sweet potatoes (OFSP) using the motivation, opportunity and ability (MOA) framework.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used data from a cross-sectional survey of 370 sweet potato farmers in Ethiopia. Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to examine the factors influencing farmers' intention to adopt OFSP.

Findings

Ability-, motivation- and opportunity-related factors significantly influenced adoption intention. Specifically, knowledge of OFSP benefits, production skills, crop characteristics and access to institutional services positively influences adoption. However, farming experience has a negative effect.

Practical implications

These findings emphasize the importance of educating farmers about OFSP’s high vitamin A content and favourable agronomic features. Additionally, understanding farmers' experiences and enhancing their production skills are crucial for increasing adoption rates. Targeted educational programs and support services can address these gaps and deficiencies.

Originality/value

This study is the first to analyse Ethiopian farmers' adoption of OFSP using an MOA framework. It offers a novel approach to understanding the complex interplay of psychological factors that influence adoption intentions. Furthermore, this study provides valuable insights into the Ethiopian context, filling a gap in the literature. These findings contribute to the development of targeted strategies for promoting biofortified crops in Ethiopia and other similar global contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of thin-film temperature sensors (TTS), focusing on the interplay between material properties and fabrication techniques. It evaluates the current state of the art, addressing both low- and high-temperature sensors, and explores the potential applications across various fields. The study also identifies challenges and highlights emerging trends that may shape the future of this technology.

Design/methodology/approach

This study systematically examines existing literature on TTS, categorizing the materials and fabrication methods used. The study compares the performance metrics of different materials, addresses the challenges encountered in thin-film sensors and reviews the case studies to identify successful applications. Emerging trends and future directions are also analyzed.

Findings

This study finds that TTS are integral to various advanced technologies, particularly in high-performance and specialized applications. However, their development is constrained by challenges such as limited operational range, material degradation, fabrication complexities and long-term stability. The integration of nanostructured materials and the advancement of wireless, self-powered and multifunctional sensors are poised to drive significant advancements in this field.

Originality/value

This study offers a unique perspective by bridging the gap between material science and application engineering in TTS. By critically analyzing both established and emerging technologies, the study provides valuable insights into the current state of the field and proposes pathways for future innovation in terms of interdisciplinary approaches. Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the cross-level effect of the top management team (TMT) on group ambidextrous innovation and to analyze the mediating role of group behavioral integration and the moderating effect of group expertise heterogeneity.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted a multi-source and multi-stage survey. We collected valid data from 43 companies in China, resulting in 141 samples from 43 TMTs and 462 valid responses from 111 organizational groups. The proposed theoretical model and hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The study findings demonstrated that TMT behavioral integration was positively related to group behavioral integration. Group behavioral integration mediates the relationship between TMT behavioral integration and these two types of innovations. Furthermore, we found that group expertise heterogeneity magnified the positive effect of group behavioral integration on exploratory innovation.

Originality/value

This study reveals the cross-level effects of TMT behavioral integration on other organizational groups and enriches the existing literature on TMT behavioral integration and ambidextrous innovation.
