Abstract

By market capitalisation, Bitcoin, which debuted in 2009, is the biggest cryptocurrency globally. A decentralised ledger system called blockchain is used in the creation, distribution, trading, and storage of Bitcoin, with the original goal being to address the shortcomings of fiat currency. This chapter highlights potential dangers and legal concerns when Bitcoin interacts with the actual economy and the traditional financial system. Besides, the details also discuss the platform’s design principles and attributes for a non-technical readership. When assessing its transactional potential, some recognise its potential for speculation, while others are doubtful of its admirable intent. The write-up also explores the potential of the adoption of cryptocurrencies in Southeast Asia due to the vast adoption of Bitcoins in countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines following the establishment of cryptocurrency technology and e-commerce. In addition, rankings of the cryptocurrency and legal stance from each country in Southeast Asia were exhibited as the solid foundation of cryptocurrencies existent for transaction purposes. The rise of central bank digital currencies (CBDC) and the future directions of Bitcoins were also highlighted in this write-up to spur the debate on whether cryptocurrency remains a fad of sensation or is legalised as the medium of exchange in an ever-growing digital world of commerce.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this review is to examine the current state-of-the-art in artificial intelligence (AI) implementations within library settings across Southeast Asia.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses the AI Library Services Innovative Conceptual Framework (AI-LSICF) to evaluate the AI initiatives in Southeast Asian libraries. Sources include relevant libraries and association’s websites, mainstream newspapers across Southeast Asia, together with academic papers published between 2019 and 2024, with a focus solely on English-language literature.

Findings

Most of the Southeast Asian libraries are in the decision and implementation stages in utilising AI technologies into library operations. It is evident that most of the libraries have made the decision to embrace AI techniques in the workplace and have started to implement the AI-enabled applications. Nevertheless, those implementations are not yet comprehensive and most of the projects are still in the trial stage. This suggests a unanimous decision concerning the use of AI in the libraries across the region has not been reached. Librarians may still face challenges and concerns in adopting AI, including resource constraints, application maintenance, staff reluctance, staff training, data security concerns and more.

Research limitations/implications

A limitation of this study is its focus on completed and published projects, due to limited access to ongoing or unpublished initiatives. Non-English publications were excluded which may have omitted relevant studies and insights from non-English-speaking countries.

Practical implications

This paper seeks to address the gap by conducting a review of the current landscape of AI applications within libraries across Southeast Asia. Its aim to provide valuable insights for Southeast Asian libraries which seek to leverage AI advancements, ultimately supporting more user-centric and technologically adept library services.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper lies in its unique perspectives on library settings in Southeast Asia, showcasing successful projects while also pinpointing areas and countries in need of further development.

Abstract

Purpose

Developing technological capabilities to enhance innovation performance is essential for firms to respond to external changes and competition. Based on the effect of organizational structure on organizational capability development, this study assesses whether a specific R&D organizational structure design can be used to develop different technological capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

Combining organizational theory and the resource-based view as an integrated view, we propose several contrasting hypotheses to show the effects of three general R&D organizational structure designs (centralized, decentralized, and hybrid) on developing exploitative and explorative capabilities. We propose R&D slack as a moderator. 82 Taiwanese listed manufacturing firms were selected. Data on the firms' annual reports and their patent applications to the Taiwan Patent Office from 2005 to 2017 were collected.

Findings

Firms’ adoption of centralized and decentralized R&D structures has a significant positive effect on developing exploitative capability and an opposite effect on developing explorative capability. A high or low R&D slack can moderate the impact of R&D organizational structure on non-routine capability development.

Research limitations/implications

This study concludes that R&D organizational structure affects the development of different technological capabilities and that the effect of R&D organizational structure on the development of technological capabilities can be changed under the moderation of R&D slack, which means that the possibility of developing different technological capabilities under the same organizational structure will increase.

Practical implications

The top manager should consider the relationship between R&D structure design and technological capability development to manage the R&D routines to influence the generation of technological capabilities. Also, they must utilize the provision of R&D slack to modulate technological capability development.

Originality/value

This study reexamines the relationship between organizational structure and capability development. It shows that organizational structure can shape unique technological capabilities and that firms may be able to change structural elements through slack resources, enabling ambidexterity or dynamic capability development without organizational change.

Abstract

Purpose

Although buying firms increasingly adopt supplier development to help suppliers enhance their ability to deal with environmental issues, little is known about the mechanisms by which buyer-led environmental supplier development (ESD) affects the environmental management capabilities (EMC) of suppliers. Focusing on the supplier perspective and specifically on the role of psychological mechanisms at the supplier level, the authors adopt the stimulus–organism–response framework from functionalist psychology to investigate the mediating role of environment-related supplier perceived relationship value in the association between ESD, in the form of environmental requirements and audits (indirect development – ID) vs. direct development projects (direct development – DD), and supplier EMC.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used structural equation modeling and regression analysis to test the hypotheses using survey data from 221 supplying organizations in China.

Findings

Results reveal that each of the three considered dimensions of the environment-related supplier perceived relationship value (i.e. economic, strategic and co-creation) helps enhance EMC. However, while DD influences positively all three dimensions, ID has a positive effect on only the economic and strategic dimensions. Moreover, the mediation analysis suggests that, while DD affects EMC both directly and via the three dimensions of environment-related supplier perceived relationship value (partial mediation), ID affects EMC only through its impact on environment-related supplier perceived relationship economic and strategic value (full mediation).

Originality/value

The study sheds light on the psychological mechanisms that drive suppliers’ involvement in green supplier development activities. By doing so, it contributes to the understanding of ESD practices and processes and their effectiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the rising domestic food price inflation in India is influenced by global macroeconomic factors like crude oil, exchange rate, foreign aid, global food prices and trade openness from January 1993 to December 2022.

Design/methodology/approach

The study has employed the structural break, autoregressive distributed lag cointegration tests to assess the stationarity and long-term relationship between the variables and the Toda–Yamamoto Granger causality test to demonstrate the causal relationship between the variables.

Findings

The study highlights the long-term relationships among variables, shedding light on the influence of global macroeconomic factors on domestic food price inflation in India. It reveals that food price inflation in India is positively influenced by crude oil prices and global food prices while being negatively affected by currency rates, foreign direct investment and trade openness.

Originality/value

Based on the findings, the study suggests that initiatives to reduce demand for crude oil and imported food products could help mitigate domestic food price inflation in India. Addressing the depreciation of the exchange rate is crucial to combat significant inflation in domestic food prices, calling for specific government interventions. Furthermore, promoting trade liberalization and foreign direct investment in the agricultural sector could help alleviate domestic food price inflation, emphasizing the importance of reducing customary trade barriers to encourage investment and trade openness.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to redefine approaches to metrics in service marketing by examining the utility of partial least squares – structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) for assessing service quality, with a focus on the airline industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the Airline Passenger Satisfaction data set from Kaggle platform, this study applies PLS-SEM, facilitated by ADANCO software and XAI techniques, specifically using the SHapley Additive exPlanations TreeExplainer model. This study tests several hypotheses to validate the effectiveness of these methodological tools in identifying key determinants of service quality.

Findings

PLS-SEM analysis categorizes key variables into Delay, Airport Service and In-flight Service, whereas XAI techniques rank these variables based on their impact on service quality. This dual-framework provides businesses a detailed analytical approach customized to specific research needs.

Research limitations/implications

This study is constrained by the use of a single data set focused on the airline industry, which may limit generalizability. Future research should apply these methodologies across various sectors to enhance a broader applicability.

Practical implications

The analytical framework offered here equips businesses with the robust tools for a more rigorous and nuanced evaluation of service quality metrics, supporting informed strategic decision-making.

Social implications

By applying advanced analytics to refine service metrics, businesses can better meet and exceed customer expectations, ultimately elevating the societal standard of service delivery.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on artificial intelligence interpretability in business analytics, presenting an innovative methodological guide for applying PLS-SEM and/or XAI in service marketing research. Abstract

Purpose

The present article aims at systematizing the literature on EM that spans over three decades (1987–2023) to analyze the growth and development in the EM research following changes in reporting standards, economic conditions and legislations over the period.

Design/methodology/approach

The study covers 3,742 articles on earnings management (EM) indexed in SCOPUS and the Web of Science databases from 1987 to 2023. The study aims at the systematization of bibliometric data using R Studio, Biblioshiny and VOS Viewer software.

Findings

The study reveals that the research in the pre-SOX era gave more thrust to the development of cross-sectional models for the detection of accrual EM proxies, whereas research on EM had shifted to managerial discretions based on real transactions in the post-SOX era. Later, in the post-GFC era, the focus of EM research was redefined towards investor protection due to the collapse of the global economy that led to the erosion of investors’ wealth. In the modern era, research on EM focuses on ethical aspects such as CSR compliance, ESG framework and so on.

Practical implications

The findings of the study will aid the policymakers in addressing the EM based on real transactions and also incorporate the variations and changes in multiple green reporting standards to ensure fairness and transparency in reported figures.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the existing literature by quadrisecting the entire research on earnings management to analyze the growth and development in EM research and makes novel suggestions that future research on earnings management can be expanded towards the role of non-financial disclosure in managerial discretions and also the insider biases in green reporting.

Abstract

Purpose

The effects of gendered views on employee voice are of great importance for knowledge sharing within public universities. Yet, they are still neglected by current human resource management and entrepreneurship literature. While strengthening themselves by reinforcing the strengths and opportunities, public universities can generate entrepreneurial opportunities through various knowledge-sharing mechanisms, including social networks and employee voice. This became a crucial lever for public universities to leverage competitive advantages and to support entrepreneurial activities through network knowledge-based sharing. For this purpose, this study aims to examine the various aspects of entrepreneurship via the voice of employees, emphasizing the moderating effect of gender and the mediating role of social networks on the link between employee voice and the entrepreneurial atmosphere of universities.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected survey data from a cross-sectional sample of 335 employees engaged in entrepreneurship activities within public universities in an emerging economy context and analyzed the data using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with the Smart-PLS software.

Findings

The PLS-SEM analysis found that different dimensions of the university entrepreneurial climate (communication, knowledge sharing and innovative climate) positively impact members’ voices within public universities. This effect is amplified by social networks, which are crucial for spreading knowledge among faculty, thereby fostering a more open and collaborative academic environment.

Research limitations/implications

When acting, the university top management team should encourage the generation and dissemination of entrepreneurial ideas to nurture a dynamic entrepreneurial atmosphere and social involvement, ultimately supporting sustainable competitive advantages through a culture of strategic knowledge sharing. The results have practical implications for university managers, entrepreneurship education actors, administrators, policymakers and entrepreneurial ecosystem actors, by demonstrating how social networks can amplify the dissemination of ideas and entrepreneurial spirit.

Originality/value

This research explores how entrepreneurship and social networks can help faculty members have a stronger influence in academic settings. It also fills in the gaps in knowledge about how human resource management and entrepreneurship can work together to create a more communicative and innovative academic environment. Additionally, this study brings new ideas to existing literature by looking at how gender differences can affect employee voice, particularly emphasizing the importance of women in leadership roles at universities. This study is also the first to delve into how entrepreneurship and social networks, along with gender perceptions, play a role in shaping the voice of employees in a public university.

Abstract

Purpose

The first aim of this paper was to discuss the learning experience of university students who participated in a service-learning project on sustainable water management. By investigating the students’ engagement in a real-world, community-based project, this study also aimed to provide insights into the effectiveness of service-learning as a pedagogical approach for sustainable development education.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presented a service-learning project organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on improving water quality in low-income communities. An overview of the project was provided, including the curriculum design, project contents, implementation process, as well as students’ assessments, evaluation and feedback. Based on students’ assessments, the outcomes and impacts of this project were discussed. Additionally, several barriers were identified during this project, and corresponding suggestions were proposed to improve the service quality and increase its positive impacts.

Findings

The students established 12 water filtration systems to improve the water quality in a needy village overseas. Apart from the benefits to the service recipients, the participating students experienced personal development and civic engagement measured in 10 aspects, including the application of classroom learning, adaptive problem-solving, creative thinking, community contribution, commitment to helping the disadvantaged, empathy and compassion, concern for those in need, moral commitment to civic affairs, multi-perspective analysis and informed decision-making.

Originality/value

Although the recorded project was not the first international service-learning project on water sustainable management, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that the whole procedure of the service-learning project was documented as a compulsory credit-bearing subject in Hong Kong universities. With the water sustainability project example, this paper shows how to integrate service-learning subjects into university curricula and what benefits and challenges they could bring.

Abstract

Purpose

Framing by dual concern theory (DCT), this study aims to examine how personality traits influence conflict resolution strategies and their impact on fascination and relationship maintenance among romantic partners within the unique context of romantic travel. By focusing on the influence of the travel environment, this research explores how shared travel experiences may alter typical relationship dynamics.

Design/methodology/approach

Using composite-based structural model analysis and importance–performance map analysis (IPMA), the study prioritizes factors contributing to relationship quality, with a specific focus on how the travel environment shapes gender differences in conflict resolution preferences. IPMA ranks these traits and strategies based on their impact on fascination and relationship maintenance in a travel context. Data were collected from romantic partners during travel and analyzed for gender-specific trends.

Findings

The findings reveal that personality traits, particularly openness, play a critical role in shaping conflict resolution strategies such as integrating, obliging and compromising, which in turn enhance fascination and relationship maintenance. Factors such as openness should be prioritized for their significant impact on relationship quality, especially among women, while integrating, agreeableness and obliging are likely to be more influential among men. In addition, the study highlights gender differences in conflict resolution preferences and their impact on relationship dynamics.

Originality/value

This study extends DCT by demonstrating how the romantic tourism environment influences established relationship dynamics, particularly the role of personality traits in conflict resolution. It offers novel insights into how travel settings affect the maintenance of romantic relationships, revealing that relationship practices can shift during travel. Practically, tourism practitioners and destination marketers can leverage these findings by designing romantic travel experiences that foster collaborative conflict resolution and address gender-specific needs. Policymakers are encouraged to create supportive environments for romantic travelers, enhancing satisfaction and relational outcomes.
