Abstract

Purpose

This manuscript is related to compute $N$-kink soliton solutions for conformable Fisher–Kolmogorov equation (CFKE) by using the generalized extended direct algebraic method (EDAM). The considered problem has important applications in mathematical biology and reaction diffusion processes. Also, the mentioned problem has significant applications in population dynamics. The fractional order conformable derivative has many features as compared to the other fractional order differential operators. For instance, the chain, product and quotient procedures do not satisfy by other fractional differential operators, but conformable operators obey the mentioned rules. Hence, we compute the soliton solutions for the mentioned problem and present its various dynamical behaviours graphically.

Design/methodology/approach

The generalized EDAM is used in this article to examine the calculation of N-kink soliton solutions for the CFKE. In mathematical biology and reaction-diffusion processes, the topic under consideration holds great significance, especially when considering population dynamics.

Findings

The results highlight the benefits of utilising conformable derivatives in mathematical modelling and further our understanding of fractional differential equations and their applications.

Research limitations/implications

The work focuses primarily on N-kink soliton solutions, which may limit the examination of alternative types of solutions (e.g., multi-soliton or periodic solutions) that might give new insights into the dynamics of the CFKE.

Practical implications

The generated N N-kink soliton solutions can enhance mathematical models in biological contexts, notably in modelling population dynamics, disease propagation and ecological interactions, leading to better forecasts and interventions.

Social implications

Public health initiatives can benefit from the understanding of disease transmission and intervention efficacy that comes from modelling population dynamics and reaction-diffusion processes.

Originality/value

The use of the generalized EDAM to obtain solutions for N-kink soliton problems is an innovative method for solving the conformable Fisher–Kolmogorov equation, demonstrating the power of this mathematical tool.

Abstract

Purpose

The ability to use laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) to print parts with tailored surface topography could reduce the need for costly post-processing. However, characterizing the as-built surface topography as a function of process parameters is crucial to establishing linkages between process parameters and surface topography and is currently not well understood. The purpose of this study is to measure the effect of different LPBF process parameters on the as-built surface topography of Inconel 718 parts.

Design/methodology/approach

Inconel 718 truncheon specimens with different process parameters, including single- and double contour laser pass, laser power, laser scan speed, build orientation and characterize their as-built surface topography using deterministic and areal surface topography parameters are printed. The effect of both individual process parameters, as well as their interactions, on the as-built surface topography are evaluated and linked to the underlying physics, informed by surface topography data.

Findings

Deterministic surface topography parameters are more suitable than areal surface topography parameters to characterize the distinct features of the as-built surfaces that result from LPBF. The as-built surface topography is strongly dependent on the built orientation and is dominated by the staircase effect for shallow orientations and partially fused metal powder particles for steep orientations. Laser power and laser scan speed have a combined effect on the as-built surface topography, even when maintaining constant laser energy density.

Originality/value

This work addresses two knowledge gaps. (i) It introduces deterministic instead of areal surface topography parameters to unambiguously characterize the as-built LPBF surfaces. (ii) It provides a methodical study of the as-built surface topography as a function of individual LPBF process parameters and their interaction effects.

Abstract

Purpose

Vietnam's construction technology (CT) adoption is low when compared to other countries with similar gross domestic product (GDP) per capita resulting in lesser productivity. The research objectives are: (1) To undertake an extensive literature review on CT adoption challenges; (2) To investigate CT adoption challenges unique to Vietnam's construction sector; and (3) To propose data-driven solutions for a greater rate of CT adoption.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-stage descriptive survey method was adopted in alignment with the research aim and objectives. Based on the literature review of 215 articles, a questionnaire was designed and administered to experienced construction managers (CM) to identify whether CT has been adopted, barriers to adoption, drivers, and the most popular CT tools. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the characteristics of interest in the empirical dataset and SPSS-based inferential statistics to estimate the means, frequency counts, variance and test hypotheses that informed the drawing of conclusions concerning the research objectives.

Findings

The popular CT tools identified were Autodesk, Microsoft Office and Primavera. The most influential CT adoption barriers: (1) Unknow`n impact on productivity, (2) Late implementation of software in construction projects, (3) Lack of understanding of importance and needs in the construction industry (4) Lack of funds during budget planning for technological advances and implementation (5) Lack of experts required for technological change, and insufficient skills in the industry.

Practical implications

It is expected that the findings could inform data-driven regulatory and practice reforms targeted at increasing greater uptake of CT in Vietnam with potential for replication in countries facing similar adoption challenges.

Originality/value

The findings are intended to support data-driven regulatory and practice improvements aimed at improving CT adoption in Vietnam, with the possibility for replication in other countries facing comparable problems.

Abstract

Purpose

In this paper, we address the need to study automatic propaganda detection to establish a course of action when faced with such a complex task. Although many isolated tasks have been proposed, a roadmap on how to best approach a new task from the perspective of text formality or the leverage of existing resources has not been explored yet.

Design/methodology/approach

We present a comprehensive study using several datasets on textual propaganda and different techniques to tackle it. We explore diverse collections with varied characteristics and analyze methodologies, from classic machine learning algorithms, to multi-task learning to utilize the available data in such models.

Findings

Our results show that transformer-based approaches are the best option with high-quality collections, and emotionally enriched inputs improve the results for Twitter content. Additionally, MTL achieves the best results in two of the five scenarios we analyzed. Notably, in one of the scenarios, the model achieves an F1 score of 0.78, significantly surpassing the transformer baseline model’s F1 score of 0.68.

Research limitations/implications

After finding a positive impact when leveraging propaganda’s emotional content, we propose further research into exploiting other complex dimensions, such as moral issues or logical reasoning.

Originality/value

Based on our findings, we provide a roadmap for tackling propaganda-related tasks, depending on the types of training data available and the task to solve. This includes the application of MTL, which has yet to be fully exploited in propaganda detection.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a methodology that extracts an architectural concept from a biological analogy that integrates forms and kinetic behavior to identify whether complex forms work better or simple forms with proper kinetic behavior for improving visual comfort and daylight performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The research employs a transdisciplinary approach using several methods consisting of a biomimetic functional-morphological approach, kinetic design strategy, case study comparison using algorithmic workflow and parametric simulation and inverse design, to develop an interactive kinetic façade with optimized daylight performance.

Findings

A key development is the introduction of a periodic interactive region (PIR), which draws inspiration from the butterfly wings' nanostructure. These findings challenge conventional perspectives on façade complexity, highlighting the efficacy of simpler shapes paired with appropriate kinetic behavior for improving visual comfort. The results show the façade with a simpler “Bookshelf” shape integrated with a tapered shape of the periodic interactive region, outperforms its more complex counterpart (Hyperbolic Paraboloid component) in terms of daylight performance and glare control, especially in southern orientations, ensuring occupant visual comfort by keeping cases in the imperceptible range while also delivering sufficient average spatial Daylight Autonomy of 89.07%, Useful Daylight Illuminance of 94.53% and Exceeded Useful Daylight Illuminance of 5.11%.

Originality/value

The investigation of kinetic façade studies reveals that precedent literature mostly focused on engineering and building physics aspects, leaving the architectural aspect underutilized during the development phase. Recent studies applied a biomimetic approach for involving the architectural elements besides the other aspects. While the biomimetic method has proven effective in meeting occupants' visual comfort needs, its emphasis has been primarily on the complex form which is difficult to apply within the kinetic façade development. This study can address two gaps: (1) the lack of an architectural aspect in the kinetic façade design specifically in the development of conceptual form and kinetic behavior dimensions and (2) exchanging the superficial biomimetic considerations with an in-depth investigation.

Abstract

In smart cities striving for innovation, development, and prosperity, hydrogen offers a promising path for decarbonization. However, its effective integration into the evolving energy landscape requires understanding regional intricacies and identifying areas for improvement. This chapter examines hydrogen transport from production to utilization, evaluating technologies’ pros, cons, and process equations and using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) tool to assess these technologies based on multiple criteria. It also explores barriers and opportunities in hydrogen transport within the 21st-century energy transition, providing insights for overcoming challenges. Evaluation criteria for hydrogen transport technologies were ranked by relative importance, with energy efficiency topping the list, followed by energy density, infrastructure requirements, cost, range, and flexibility. Safety, technological maturity, scalability, and compatibility with existing infrastructure received lower weights. Hydrogen transport technologies were categorized into three performance levels: low, medium, and high. Hydrogen tube trailers ranked lowest, while chemical hydrides, hydrail, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, hydrogen pipelines, and hydrogen blending exhibited moderate performance. Compressed hydrogen gas, liquid hydrogen, ammonia carriers, and hydrogen fueling stations demonstrated the highest performance. The proposed framework is crucial for next-gen smart cities, cutting emissions, boosting growth, and speeding up development with a strong hydrogen infrastructure. This makes the region a sustainable tech leader, improving air quality and well-being. Aligned with Gulf Region goals, it is key for smart cities. Policymakers, industries, and researchers can use these insights to overcome barriers and seize hydrogen transport tech opportunities.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the complexity factors associated with BIM-enabled projects. BIM has been widely promoted as a potential solution to numerous challenges that hinder productivity in construction projects, owing to its numerous advantages. Nevertheless, it is crucial to acknowledge the heightened complexity it introduces to project workflows, stakeholder coordination and information management.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs the Delphi method to identify and extract complexity factors specific to BIM-enabled projects. A panel of industry and academic experts is engaged to discern and prioritise these factors based on their expertise and knowledge.

Findings

The study reveals a comprehensive list of 34 complexity factors that significantly impact BIM-enabled projects. Among the most influential factors are laws and regulations, variety of procurement methods, technical capabilities of teams, project manager competence, information transfer capacity, range of project deliverables and diversity of project locations. The findings highlight the importance of these factors and emphasise the need for proactive and adaptive management to navigate their impact and achieve positive project outcomes.

Originality/value

This study introduces the DEBACCS framework, a metric-based model designed to understand and evaluate complexity within BIM-enabled projects. DEBACCS stands for seven key dimensions: diversity, emergence, belonging, autonomy, connectivity, context and size. These dimensions represent essential aspects for gauging project complexity. By applying the concept of complexity from project management to BIM, the study offers valuable insights for practitioners and researchers. It provides a unique perspective on the challenges and considerations associated with implementing and managing BIM in construction projects. The findings have practical value for practitioners, enabling them to better understand and address the implications of complexity in BIM-enabled projects, ultimately leading to improved project outcomes.

This study explores the impact of the residents' voice and social media brand engagement on coopetition in tourism destinations with the mediating role of knowledge sharing. The study's statistical population includes tourists who visited Iran. The sample was 243 tourists who visited Iranian tourist different villages in the spring of 2023. This empirical study adopted a descriptive correlational method and used PLS3 for data analysis. The effects of residents' voices, knowledge sharing, and engagement with social media improve cooperation between tourism destinations, help create platforms for creativity and innovation in this industry, and ensure the promotion of sustainability and attractiveness of tourism. Therefore, the mutual analysis of the effects of different factors in rural tourism in Iran is valuable in providing a new method to improve the tourism experience in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a pioneering investigation into the barriers impeding the adoption of reverse logistics (RL) in the Iranian construction industry, addressing a significant gap in the current literature within the country.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a meticulous examination of the literature, complemented by 19 in-depth interviews, a battery of barriers to RL implementation was initially identified, distilled into a final set of 30 barriers, which served as the basis for the design of a structured survey questionnaire. Employing Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), an analysis was conducted on a dataset that comprised of 80 responses. Subsequently, the barriers approved through the PLS- SEM were subjected to prioritization through the application of Fuzzy TOPSIS.

Findings

Findings reveal the critical inadequacy of contemporary technology and infrastructure, a foundation essential for the efficacious enactment of RL. This shortfall manifests in procurement and logistics processes plagued by inefficiency and ineffectiveness, as consequences of an immature information and technology ecosystem. Furthermore, the study underscores the dominance of traditional markets where the adoption of secondary materials/products remains sporadic, signaling a crucial area for further research and intervention.

Originality/value

This study offers original insights into the significant hurdles that hinder the adoption and integration of RL practices within the Iranian construction industry, an under-explored area within the RL research domain. For industry practitioners, findings point to recommendations for overcoming these barriers in the specific Iranian context while also offering broader insights and lessons that may be relevant to other countries and similar contexts.
