Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the impact of virtual tours on the engagement and travel intentions of older adults, emphasizing the role of emotional and informative content. It aims to enhance travel confidence and reduce stress among older travelers, fostering inclusive tourism through advanced avatar technology.
Design/methodology/approach
Using two between-subjects experiments, this research compares the effects of emotion-driven and knowledge-centric virtual tours on older adults. It explores the mediating role of travel confidence and stress reduction, along with the moderating influence of positive psychological cues on engagement and travel intentions.
Findings
The results highlight the potential of technology in promoting inclusive tourism. Emotionally engaging virtual tours significantly increase travel intentions among older adults by boosting confidence and alleviating stress, with positive psychological cues enhancing these effects.
Practical implications
This study offers valuable insights for tourism industry stakeholders by suggesting the development of avatar-based virtual tours tailored to the emotional and cognitive needs of older travelers. This approach could create more accessible and satisfying tourism experiences for older travelers.
Originality/value
This study extends the socioemotional selectivity theory to the realm of metaverse travel, providing a novel perspective on the emotional and cognitive engagement of older adults in the metaverse. This underscores the importance of inclusive technology in addressing the needs of older travelers.

Abstract
The 4th Industrial Revolution changed various aspects of our lives. Those influences also led to many changes in the sports field. The emergence of different wearable devices which adapted Information Technology (IT) played a pivotal role in enhancing the field of sports science. As an example, smartwatches are one of the most popular wearable devices. They monitor an appropriate amount of exercise and manage individual health. These functions reflect people's desire to pursue an individual lifestyle, which leads to a trend of “quantified self.” A diversified market related to smart fitness equipment also provided a reasonable opportunity for people to select various training options. Combining online content with fitness equipment created an environment where people compete globally for individual fitness.
As such, the Fourth Industrial Revolution impacted sports field's development but yielded unexpected results. It has been criticized due to taking care of the body relying on machines, misconceptions of figures, and subordination of tools. Like Nomophobia which indicates a fear of being without a mobile phone, No-watchphobia confuses people. Boundaries between sports and game collapse, jobs of personal trainers are threatened, and inequality index of sports participation is enormously broad.
Critical scholars argue the need for in-depth reflection on whether the rationalization of society influenced by the development of science and technology is truly for human happiness and liberation or leads to restraint and alienation. From the critical scholars' perspective, academic concerns and phenomenological considerations should be contemplated based on the aspects of sports sociology.

Abstract
Purpose
Despite the growth of hotel guests’ mobile application use, limited studies identify hotel mobile application attributes and their roles in mobile application satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Therefore, drawing onto the information system success model and the two-factor theory, this study aims to establish a comprehensive framework of hotel mobile application attributes categorized into system, information and service attributes and investigate their roles in mobile application satisfaction and dissatisfaction.
Design/methodology/approach
A comprehensive framework of hotel mobile application attributes has been developed, drawing on the information system success model and using text analytics. A total of 88,309 mobile application reviews were collected for analysis. Furthermore, an impact asymmetry analysis was conducted to examine the extent of influence of mobile application attributes on satisfaction and dissatisfaction, thereby elucidating the contribution of mobile application attributes to both outcomes and expanding upon the two-factor theory.
Findings
Research findings present a holistic mobile application attributes framework and their roles in mobile application satisfaction and dissatisfaction by integrating theories and methodologies. Regarding the information quality, relevance emerged as the key factor for enhancing customer satisfaction, serving as a satisfier. In the realm of system quality, features stood out as the principal attribute leading to dissatisfaction. For the aspects of service quality, reliability was identified as the critical factor for achieving satisfaction. Overall, the findings confirm that mobile application attributes have unique roles in developing mobile application (dis)satisfaction.
Research limitations/implications
The study extends an understanding of hotel mobile application attributes’ roles, providing rigorous and practical guidance for improving customers’ mobile application experience in the hotel industry. The study sheds light on the importance of considering mobile applications from various perspectives. However, the current study is limited to using text analytics as its methodological approach. Therefore, future research can benefit from including interviews to achieve a deeper comprehension of the underlying factors contributing to the outcomes of this research.
Originality/value
The novel theoretical and methodological approach enhances the application of existing theories and uses of impact asymmetry analysis. Such an approach uncovers hidden patterns of the roles of mobile applications in customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The study also sheds light on the importance of considering mobile applications from various perspectives, such as information, system and service quality.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the effects of network externalities and diffusion of innovation on users’ perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment, and in turn subjective well-being and intention to use in the smart living context.
Design/methodology/approach
To explore different types of smart living services, the data collected come from surveying 512 users of smart home services and 570 users of smart living apps. Structural equation modeling is used to analyze the data, and post hoc interviews are conducted to provide insights into our conceptual model of smart living services.
Findings
Compatibility and perceived service complementarity are the most influential determinants of users’ perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment toward smart living services. Perceived usefulness has a greater impact on users’ intention to use and their subjective well-being than perceived enjoyment. Interestingly, perceived enjoyment exerts a stronger influence on subjective well-being than on intention to use.
Originality/value
This study is one of the first to provide empirical evidence in the context of smart living services, contributing to transformative service literature by extending the understanding of technology use and its influence on user well-being into a less explored service context. This study also advances users’ intention to use and subjective well-being of technology adoption in the service context by integrating perspectives from network externalities and diffusion of innovation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to review the literature on the adoption determinants of mobile health (M-health) applications for health behavior change following a systematic methodology.
Design/methodology/approach
This review systematically identified 134 peer-reviewed studies out of 10,687 from Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) published between 2010 and 2021. This review used a thematic analysis to produce the main themes conceptualizing a holistic framework of the investigated M-health application adoption factors.
Findings
Despite the exploration of multifaceted adoption determinants and behaviors, the current publications exhibit limitations. The studies not only show a lack of representation of multiple health behaviors and medical conditions but also fail to involve data from low- and middle-developing countries, where M-health application utilization is crucial. Findings revealed that there is a considerable absence of a solid theoretical foundation that unveils a gap in interpreting the adoption factors effectively. Understanding cultural and demographic variances and exploring financial factors and healthcare provider involvement is essential for tailoring M-health application interventions. Continuous assessment of technological factors and evaluation of the actual impact of M-health application usage on behavioral changes and health outcomes will further enhance the effectiveness and adoption of these technologies.
Originality/value
This review is one of the first comprehensive reviews of determinants of M-health application adoption targeting health behavior change for the general public and patients.

Abstract
Purpose
Data quality assurance (DQA) is essential for enabling the sharing and reuse of research data, especially given the increasing focus on data transparency, reproducibility, credibility and validity in research. Although the literature on research data curation is vast, there remains a lack of theory-guided exploration of DQA modeling in research data repositories (RDRs).
Design/methodology/approach
This study addresses this gap by examining 12 distinct cases of DQA-related knowledge organization tools, including four metadata vocabularies, three metadata schemas, one ontology and four standards used to guide DQA work in RDRs.
Findings
The study analyzed the cases utilizing a theoretical framework based on activity theory and data quality literature and synthesized a model and a knowledge artifact, a DQA ontology (DQAO, Lee et al., 2024), that encodes a DQA theory for RDRs. The ontology includes 127 classes, 44 object properties, 7 data properties and 18 instances. The article also uses problem scenarios to illustrate how the DQAO can be integrated into the FAIR ecosystem.
Originality/value
The study provides valuable insights into DQA theory and practice in RDRs and offers a DQA ontology for designing, evaluating and integrating DQA workflows within RDRs.

The international education sector has seen significant growth, offering K-12 schooling options beyond national borders. However, this expansion presents equity challenges, with limited data available to assess their extent. International schools, predominantly English-medium K-12 institutions following externally set curricula, play a central role in this landscape. Our study examines unintended consequences of policy and practice within international schools, particularly regarding student well-being. Despite efforts to promote global citizenship by transnational organizational actors, oversight and gaps in inclusion can create adverse conditions for vulnerable students, identified by their mental or emotional fragility or concerns of neglect or abuse. As an acculturation study, participants were delimited to expatriate teachers counselors, and school leaders in international schools, who are known as sojourners, and who encounter diverse policies and pedagogies, forming a complex “policyscape” environment. While this offers opportunities for innovation, it also poses challenges, especially in supporting students’ cultural and mental health needs. This study identifies four policyscape manifestations, including challenges in supporting students with mental health issues and special needs. Teachers faced greater stress and limited agency compared to school leaders, who benefited from structural support and resources. Policyscape implications on student well-being underscore the urgency of addressing these challenges in line with global education goals for inclusivity and quality education for all.

Abstract
Purpose
The ground control station (GCS) is an important part of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) which provides the facility for human control. In previous work, the authors developed an enhanced virtual reality GCS (VR-GCS) for airships. Here, the authors incorporated haptic gloves to control the aerial vehicle with the use of a virtual controller defined within the virtual environment.
Design/methodology/approach
The VR headset was connected to the haptics and the flight simulation tool. The VR headset was used to visualize basic flight simulation while the vehicle was controlled via the haptic gloves and a virtual controller defined in the virtual environment. Here, using the previous experience, the position and orientation data from the VR headset was sent to the FlightGear flight simulator (FGFS) via extensible markup language codes. This was used to drive the heads-up-display (HUD) as well within the VR headset. Then, the inputs from the pilot on the virtual controller were sent to the FGFS using an embedded code. To accurately simulate the final goal of deploying the haptic-based VR solution to monitor and pilot the airship in beyond visual line-of-sight scenarios, a VR application was developed using the Unity game engine. Finally, the integration of VR, haptics and FGFS was performed using another embedded code.
Findings
A test procedure was conducted with a similar rating technique based on the NASA TLX questionnaire that identifies the pilot’s spare mental capacity when completing an assigned task to assure the comfortability of the proposed haptics VR-HMD (HVR-HMD). Accordingly, 10 users participated in the test and a comparison has been made for the aircraft control using the physical remote control (RC) controller and the virtual one. The results from the repeated measures analysis of variance and Tukey’s honestly significant difference post hoc tests revealed significant differences in mental demand, physical demand, effort and frustration across the different simulation conditions. Notably, the HVR-HMD system significantly lowered workload and frustration levels compared to both the desktop and VR-HMD setups, underscoring its effectiveness as a training tool. Results from the NASA TLX questionnaire showed that the current iteration of the system is ideal for training amateur users to replace traditional RC controllers by using similar virtual systems in a safe and immersive environment.
Originality/value
Such an advanced portable system may increase the situational awareness of pilots and allow them to complete flights with the same data transmission procedures using virtual systems in simulation.
