Abstract

Purpose

The primary objective of this study was to aggregate and synthesize existing research findings in the realm of educational financing considering the adoption of educational technology (EdTech).

Design/methodology/approach

The study involves the application of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Model, considering the journal articles from the last 10 years (2013 through 2023) obtained from the EBSCO and Emerald Insight databases to perform a systematic literature review.

Findings

EdTech has given institutions new sources of income. The demand for online courses, credentials and other digital learning tools is rising, opening up new revenue potential for schools. Take-now-pay-post-placement is a new business model for the upskilling sector that enables learners to enroll in pertinent upskilling courses and pay back once they are placed (at a higher salary).

Originality/value

The development of technology has significantly lowered the overall educational cost, democratized access to education and empowered people to take charge of their education regardless of their location or socioeconomic status. With technology acting as a potent instrument to facilitate learning and close access barriers to education, this trend is expected to continue.

Abstract

Purpose

In this digital age and risk society, this study aims to explore innovative strategies for E-retailers during supply chain disruptions to construct a more resilient supply chain system.

Design/methodology/approach

Various game theoretical models are constructed to analyze four supply chain scenarios. Meanwhile, sufficient numerical analysis was conducted to observe the impact of key parameters on supply chain strategies.

Findings

Multiple crucial factors exert a comprehensive influence on E-retailers’ decisions on sourcing and pricing, leading to the diversity and complexity of decision-making conditions. First, with the increased probability of disruption, the purchase quantities of the E-retailer from different suppliers are not in a linear changing pattern, and the total purchase quantity is allocated variably between different suppliers. Second, the variation in disruption severity (partial or complete) results in the shift of decisions between single-sourcing and dual-sourcing. Responsive pricing is conducive to increasing the purchase quantity and profits under partial disruption; its advantages are diminished when completely disrupted. Third, higher commission rates usually have a detrimental impact on profit, whereas responsive pricing may mitigate this impact.

Originality/value

Unlike the previous single perspective, this study innovatively explores strategies from the hybrid perspective of sourcing and pricing. By extracting two key factors (disruption probability and severity), it realizes the scientific characterization of supply chain disruptions. These achievements boost theoretical innovation. Concentrating on E-retailers, it avoids the generalization of conclusions and enhances the application value.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected business and entrepreneurship activities worldwide. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing entrepreneurship development in an emerging economy’s small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Design/methodology/approach

The researchers applied a quantitative approach to this study, which used cross-sectional data as the basis of its findings. The researchers used a questionnaire to obtain responses from general managers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) manufacturing industries.

Findings

Using structural equation modeling, the findings of the study suggest that, on the one hand, the fear of the COVID-19 pandemic and perceptions about its arrival had a negative impact on entrepreneurship development. On the other hand, stress and anxiety had no significant effect on entrepreneurship development.

Practical implications

This study’s findings guide policymakers, KSA’s government agents and industry owners to adopt preventive measures to limit fear, stress and anxiety associated with the expected complications of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings also offer better solutions to controlling severe disturbances to the economic and social entrepreneurship of vulnerable startup companies, various SMEs and large-scale companies.

Originality/value

This study’s results reveal the severe complications of the COVID-19 pandemic and its remarkably devastating impact on entrepreneurship development.

Abstract

Purpose

This article targeted to experimentally examine the impact of several considered process parameters namely, applied voltage (AV), tool feed rate, electrolyte concentration and pulse frequency (PF), on the material removal rate (MRR) and radial overcut (ROC) while performing shaped tube drilling of aviation grade Inconel 625 super alloy through electrochemical machining principle. Further, an attempt has also been made to develop mathematical models for the process responses along with advanced optimization with evolutionary methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The central composite rotatable design matrix was used to scheme out the experiments in the present study. The consistency and accuracy of the developed mathematical models were confirmed through statistical results. Additionally, a field emission scanning electron microscope analysis was conducted to assess and analyze the microstructure of the machined work samples. The study also seeks to optimize the selected process inputs for MRR and ROC through the implementation of the desirability method, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Teaching Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO).

Findings

The ROC is significantly influenced by the input parameters, specifically the PF and AV. Less ROC values were observed when the high PF with moderate AV. The minimum and maximum values of ROC and MRR were obtained as; 135.128 µm and 380.720 µm; 1.37 mg/min and 2.3707 mg/min, correspondingly. The best optimized confirmatory results were obtained through the TLBO approach, with an MRR value of 3.1587 mg/min and a ROC of 71.9629 µm, in comparison to the PSO and desirability approaches.

Originality/value

The various challenges associated with the productive machining of aviation grade Inconel 625 superalloy have been explored experimentally. The conducted experimentation has been performed on the in-house fabricated micro-electrochemical setup capable of performing a variety of advanced machining operations at the miniaturized level. Further, the application of shaped tube drilling while processing aviation grade Inconel 625 superalloy has been explored with the developed micro-ECM set-up. Moreover, the performed microstructure analysis of the machined work samples has elaborated and explored the various associated surface integrity aspects which are quite crucial when it comes to real-life aerospace-related applications. The utility of designed experiments has further made the attempted experimental analysis more fruitful and qualitative too.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the nexus between tourist’s characteristics and the changing intensity of social media’s impact on tourist decision-making among Indian tourists. A group-based comparison is done in this exploratory study; the basis of groups is the tourist’s characteristics which signifies their different types such as social media type, user type, traveller type and destination type. India, which is a huge market for tourists and social media users, is explored for this study.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts an exploratory design where an attempt is made to analyse if the intensity of social media impact on their decision-making changes with different types of tourists. For this purpose, primary data analysis using Partial Least Squares Regression based Multi Group Analysis (PLS-MGA) is performed on 488 Indian Tourists which was collected using a structured online questionnaire. The groups have been divided according to tourist characteristics signifying different types like social media type, user type, traveller type and destination type.

Findings

Social media usage frequency and travel frequency have no moderating effect on social media’s impact on tourist decision-making. But social media type partially moderates decision-making with changing impact on the need recognition, information search and post purchase behaviour stages. Destination type also partially moderates with an impact on post purchase behaviour stage of tourist decision-making. Thus, it can be said that different types of tourists are impacted differently by social media across various stages of decision-making.

Originality/value

This is a novel study that for the first time explores the changes in the impact of social media on tourist decision-making through changes in their own personal characteristics. Also, it provides real-time insights for tourism marketing for Indian market which has huge potential due to Indians being avid travellers and users of social media.

Abstract

Purpose

Technology advancement has changed how banks operate. Modernizing technology has, on the one hand, made it simpler for banks to do their daily business, but it has also increased cyberattacks. The purpose of the study is to to determine the factors that have the most effects on online fraud detection and to evaluate the advantages of AI and human psychology research in preventing online transaction fraud. Artificial intelligence has been used to create new techniques for both detecting and preventing cybercrimes. Fraud has also been facilitated in some organizations via employee participation.

Design/methodology/approach

The main objective of the research approach is to guide the researcher at every stage to realize the main objectives of the study. This quantitative study used a survey-based methodology. Because it allows for both unbiased analysis of the relationship between components and prediction, a quantitative approach was adopted. The study of the body of literature, the design of research questions and the development of instruments and procedures for data collection, analysis and modeling are all part of the research process. The study evaluated the data using Matlab and a structured model analysis method. For reliability analysis and descriptive statistics, IBM SPSS Statistics was used. Reliability and validity were assessed using the measurement model, and the postulated relationship was investigated using the structural model.

Findings

There is a risk in scaling at a fast pace, 3D secure is used payer authentication has a maximum mean of 3.830 with SD of 0.7587 and 0.7638, and (CE2).

Originality/value

This study focused on investigating the benefits of artificial intelligence and human personality study in online transaction fraud and to determine the factors that affect something most strongly on online fraud detection. Artificial intelligence and human personality in the Indian banking industry have been emphasized by the current research. The study revealed the benefits of artificial intelligence and human personality like awareness, subjective norms, faster and more efficient detection and cost-effectiveness significantly impact (accept) online fraud detection in the Indian banking industry. Also, security measures and better prediction do not significantly impact (reject) online fraud detection in the Indian banking industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine curiosity as a distal predictor of knowledge sharing facilitated by informal learning. It also probes the boundary conditions imposed by ebullient supervision in the influence of curiosity on knowledge sharing.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected data through a two-wave survey of 349 knowledge workers in the IT sector and used structural equation modeling to analyze the data.

Findings

The results indicated a positive relationship between curiosity and knowledge sharing. In particular, informal learning was found to mediate the relationship between curiosity and knowledge sharing and ebullient supervision was identified as a significant condition that strengthens the effect of curiosity on informal learning.

Practical implications

Organizations can promote knowledge sharing by harnessing curiosity as an intrinsic motivator for employees to engage in informal learning. Moreover, the findings identified ebullient supervision as an extrinsic motivator within the work environment, suggesting its potential to enhance the impact of curiosity on knowledge sharing.

Originality/value

This paper broadens the limited literature on ebullient leadership by revealing how it strengthens the effects of curiosity and informal learning on knowledge sharing.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines how project leaders’ knowledge hiding influences project performance via project employee creativity, employing the conservation of resources theory. Further, we investigate how mastery motivational climate (MMC) moderates the project employee creativity and project performance relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing purposive sampling design, two-wave data (N = 245) was collected with a gap of three weeks from employees working in R&D departments in private software development project-based organizations located in Lahore, Pakistan.

Findings

Results suggest that leaders’ knowledge hiding does impede project employee creativity and negatively influence project performance. In addition, MMC was found to accentuate the relationship between project employee creativity and project performance.

Practical implications

This study offers notable insights into the knowledge hiding literature from a top-down perspective within the project management domain relating to IT projects. This study’s findings pose implications for practitioners and project-based organizations who are interested in counteracting the adverse effects of knowledge hiding on project performance.

Originality/value

This study proposes a novel approach to job design by considering resource scarcity caused by a leader’s knowledge hiding as a job demand, along with the achievement goal perspective driven by a mastery or goal orientation. To understand these two perspectives, we rely on the conservation of resources (COR) theory to describe how a leader’s knowledge hiding affects project performance through project employee creativity, moderated by mastery motivational climate.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the synergistic effect of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and economic challenges on suicide risk, under the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, using a prospective population-based cohort study.

Design/methodology/approach

Participants included 435 adults (aged from 18 to 92 years, mean = 53.8) from the Utsunomiya COVID-19 seROprevalence Neighborhood Association (U-CORONA) study, a population-based longitudinal study in Utsunomiya city, Japan. The baseline survey was conducted in June 2020, between the first and the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. ACEs were assessed using 13 items, and economic challenges due to the COVID-19 were assessed using one item. In the follow-up study, conducted in October 2020 between the second and the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, suicide risk was assessed using six items from the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview via a self-reported questionnaire.

Findings

This study found positive independent association between ACEs and economic challenges due to COVID-19 and suicide risk. Synergistic effects were also found: the participants with one ACE and economic challenges and those with 2+ ACEs and economic challenges were more likely to be at higher risk of suicide compared to those without ACEs and economic challenges.

Originality/value

The findings suggest that adults with a higher number of ACEs, in addition to severe economic challenges, were more likely to be at risk for suicide during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

Culture is important and influential in how students learn STEM. This study aims to examine whether there is a pedagogical nexus between culturally successful teaching practices, i.e. culturally responsive teaching (CRT), online learning management systems (LMS) and STEM pedagogy among Black undergraduate women in STEM during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

Using descriptive data from a quantitative survey exploring the four domains of the CRT framework: care, communication, curriculum and instruction, this study examines the teaching practices experienced via online learning of 26 Black female STEM majors regarding learning management systems and methods utilized.

Findings

The analytic framework utilized in this study was Gay’s (2000, 2002) framework for CRT. Using data from a purposive sample of Black female STEM majors, researchers examined if students experienced culturally responsive teaching practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research team also explored the LMS and the method(s) of instruction.

Originality/value

Because of the limited publications on the culturally successful learning experiences of Black STEM majors in online learning spaces, this work offers the use of CRT as an analytic frame to examine the use of CRT practices with Black female STEM majors.
