Abstract

Purpose

Ground rent has been playing a vital role in China’s economic and social development, which has a clear practical logic. It is also necessary to present the historical inevitability and institutional mechanisms that realize this role of ground rent concerning its theoretical and historical logic.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper draws on the theories of the French regulation school and the social structure of accumulation theory to establish a preliminary analytical framework. This paper explores the process of ground rent formation under certain land institutional arrangements, as well as the association between the capital accumulation system, the distribution regulation mechanism and relevant stakeholder relationships. From the perspective of historical materialism, the paper examines the functions of ground rent in feudal and capitalist societies and their mapping association between the capital accumulation system, distribution regulation mechanism and stakeholders. This paper further investigates the inevitable trends in the evolution of different social systems from the perspective of rent. Additionally, based on Marx’s view on ground rent under socialism, the paper elucidates the formation, types of rent and its engagement in social production under the conditions of China’s socialist market economy, identifying the inherent value orientation and distinct institutional advantages.

Findings

Although considerable research has explored the reasons for the existence, categories and functions of rent in a socialist market economy, there is a relatively insufficient examination of its historical evolution and how it influences real-world economic dynamics. Existing studies have primarily focused on agricultural rent, lacking an in-depth analysis that puts the behaviors of landowners, land operators and laborers in fundamental contexts.

Originality/value

As China enters a new stage of development, it is imperative to improve the public ownership of land from a new historical starting point, encourage the rational use of ground rent leverage, and establish and enhance the capital accumulation system, the distribution regulation mechanism and relevant stakeholder relationships, enabling their more harmonious alignment with the socialist market economy. The following effort should be made to ensure that such actions will be put into place.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to analysis of the effects of green innovation ecosystem coopetition (cooperation and competition), environmental management practices (EMPs) and digital innovation (DI) on carbon footprint reduction.

Design/methodology/approach

To conduct the study, a questionnaire was administered to hotel managers from different regions of Brazil. Data were collected from 197 hotels and analyzed via partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results show that green innovation ecosystem cooperation positively and significantly affects EMPs and DI. Green innovation ecosystem competition interactions also benefit the adoption of EMPs. However, they do not significantly influence the use of DI. The results indicate that hotels that are in a scenario of simultaneous competition and collaboration (coopetition) within the green innovation ecosystem can reduce carbon emissions when EMPs and DI are used.

Research limitations/implications

The authors contribute to the literature by showing different pathways for reducing the carbon footprint of hotels. The results expand the authors’ knowledge by showing evidence that cooperation and competition interactions can produce distinct effects, especially on DI. Thus, this study has important practical implications for hotel managers seeking to improve their environmental practices and DI with the help of external multiagent resources and knowledge.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature by examining how cooperation and competition interactions in the green innovation ecosystem help in the adoption of environmental management and DI practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The brake pipe system was an essential braking component of the railway freight trains, but the existing E-type sealing rings had problems such as insufficient low-temperature resistance, poor heat stability and short service life. To address these issues, low-phenyl silicone rubber was prepared and tested, and the finite element analysis and experimental studies on the sealing performance of its sealing rings were carried out.

Design/methodology/approach

The low-temperature resistance and thermal stability of the prepared low-phenyl silicone rubber were studied using low-temperature tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic thermomechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. The sealing performance of the low-phenyl silicone rubber sealing ring was studied by using finite element analysis software abaqus and experiments.

Findings

The prepared low-phenyl silicone rubber sealing ring possessed excellent low-temperature resistance and thermal stability. According to the finite element analysis results, the finish of the flange sealing surface and groove outer edge should be ensured, and extrusion damage should be avoided. The sealing rings were more susceptible to damage in high compression ratio and/or low-temperature environments. When the sealing effect was ensured, a small compression ratio should be selected, and rubbers with hardness and elasticity less affected by temperature should be selected. The prepared low-phenyl silicone rubber sealing ring had zero leakage at both room temperature (RT) and −50 °C.

Originality/value

The innovation of this study is that it provides valuable data and experience for the future development of the sealing rings used in the brake pipe flange joints of the railway freight cars in China.

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the attitude synchronization issue of multi-spacecraft formation flying systems under the limited communication resources.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors propose a distributed learning Chebyshev neural network controller (LCNNC) combining a dynamic event-triggered (DET) mechanism and a learning CNN model to achieve accurate multi-spacecraft attitude synchronization under communication constraints.

Findings

The proposed method can significantly reduce the internal communication frequency and improve the attitude synchronization accuracy.

Practical implications

This method requires the low communication resources, has a high control accuracy and is thus suitable for engineering applications.

Originality/value

A novel DET mechanism-based LCNNC is proposed to achieve the accurate multi-spacecraft attitude synchronization under communication constraints.

Abstract

Purpose

This study drawing upon opportunity-ability-motivation (OAM) theory focuses on digital entrepreneurship opportunities (DEOs), knowledge generation capabilities (EKGCs) and enterprise market-sensing capabilities (EMSC) affecting digital innovation in terms of exploitative and exploratory DIs.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing quantitative methodology on a sample of 352 software SMEs' managers, the study employed a hierarchical regression analysis to investigate whether and how digital entrepreneurship opportunities and knowledge generation capabilities support and nurture both DIs. Additionally, the moderated–mediation effect of market-sensing capabilities on the relationships among digital entrepreneurship opportunities, enterprise knowledge generation capabilities and DIs are considered.

Findings

The study findings reveal that digital entrepreneurship opportunities influence exploitative and exploratory DIs. Knowledge generation capabilities partially mediate the relationship between digital entrepreneurship opportunities and exploitative and exploratory DIs, respectively. Moreover, market-sensing capabilities strengthen not only the effect of digital entrepreneurship opportunities on knowledge generation capabilities but also the effects of knowledge generation capabilities on exploratory DI. The moderated–mediation outcomes reveal that the mediating role of knowledge generation capabilities on the relationship between digital entrepreneurship opportunities and both DIs is stronger when EMSC are high.

Originality/value

This research integrates the opportunity-ability-motivation perspective to present a comprehensive framework that reveals the intricate interdependencies among digital entrepreneurship opportunity, knowledge generation and market-sensing capabilities in driving both exploratory and exploitative digital innovation in software SMEs. This approach significantly enhances our understanding of how software SMEs can strategically strengthen their internal skills and resources, ultimately leading to superior digital innovation outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine whether knowledge creation processes (KCPs) – knowledge exchange and knowledge integration affect digital innovation (DI), including information technology (IT)-enabled capabilities (ITECs) as a mediator and absorptive capacity (AC) as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

With a survey data set of 390 employees from Pakistani software small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the current study employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using Smart Partial Least Squares to estimate the structural relationships in the conceptual model.

Findings

The results confirm that KCPs – knowledge exchange and knowledge integration positively enhance software SME's DI; ITECs play a partial mediating role in the linkage between KCPs and DI; AC positively moderates the relationship between knowledge integration and ITECs, and ITECs and DI, while AC doesn’t moderate the relationship between knowledge exchange and ITECs. The AC positively moderates the mediating role of ITECs amongst KCPs (knowledge exchange and knowledge integration) and DI, respectively.

Originality/value

This research uniquely integrates the knowledge-based view and dynamic capability theory to present a comprehensive framework that explains the interdependencies between knowledge process, ITECs and AC in driving DI. This approach advances the understanding of how software SMEs can strengthen internal knowledge and IT resources to achieve superior innovation outcomes.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized teaching and learning methods in higher education, especially in English language teaching and learning. This chapter contributes to the existing knowledge by exploring how AI has developed within the framework of teaching and learning of English, highlighting the challenges, dangers, and moral issues associated with its application. The typical classroom environment has significantly changed because of the integration of AI-powered tools and platforms in English instruction. Chatbots, automated grading systems, and language learning apps driven by AI have streamlined language education, increasing its effectiveness and accessibility. But these benefits accompany a variety of challenges and worries. Ethical concerns about data privacy, algorithmic biases, and the depersonalization of education arise as AI becomes more deeply ingrained in educational methods. Reliance on AI may inadvertently exacerbate educational disparities as long as learners' access to technology and its advantages remain unequal. In addition, significant thought must be given to the ethical ramifications of AI-generated content as well as the possible loss of human connection in language learning settings. This chapter examines these dangers and challenges and makes the case for a well-rounded strategy that maximizes AI's benefits while minimizing any potential downsides. Together, educators and legislators need to create moral guidelines that balance the potential of AI with human-centered learning experiences. To ensure responsible and fair AI integration and promote an inclusive learning environment that prioritizes students' holistic development while exploiting technology breakthroughs, comprehensive assessment of the associated obstacles, risks, and ethical issues is necessary.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore whether organization modularity affects the operation performance of manufacturing firms through the mediator of digital embeddedness and the moderator of organization compatibility.

Design/methodology/approach

Hierarchical regression, mediation effect test macro and bootstrap were conducted to empirically analyze two waves of longitudinal survey data from 284 Chinese manufacturing firms.

Findings

Digital embeddedness (digital technology, digital infrastructure and digital culture) mediates the relationship between organization modularity and operation performance. In addition, organization compatibility positively moderates the relationship between the three types of digital embeddedness and operation performance. Under a high organization compatibility degree, digital embeddedness has a positive impact on operational performance, but under a low organization compatibility degree, its impact is negative.

Practical implications

Organizational modularity is an important measure for manufacturers to gain competitive advantages, especially in the industrial transformation driven by the digital economy. Manufacturers need to realize modularity immediately and consider the compatibility of digitalization so that they can embed digital technology more flexibly and adaptively and gain operational advantages.

Originality/value

This study is very relevant for industrial manufacturers, as they urgently need to know how to gain competitive advantages through organizational change in digital transformation. This study provides many reliable theoretical guidelines. Specifically, this study tells manufacturers how to better realize digital embedding and performance through modularity and how to improve the compatibility between digitalization and organization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to perform bibliometric analysis to systematically and comprehensively examine the current landscape of digital knowledge, integration and performance in the transformation of sustainability accounting, reporting and assurance.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses a systematic literature review, following the Scientific Procedures and Rationales for Systematic Literature Review protocol and uses various bibliometric and performance analytical methods. These include annual scientific production analysis, journal analysis, keyword cooccurrence analysis, keyword clustering, knowledge gap analysis and future research direction identification to evaluate the existing literature thoroughly.

Findings

The analysis reveals significant insights into the transformative impact of digital technologies on sustainability practices. Annual scientific production and journal analyses highlight key contributors to the adoption of digital technologies in sustainability accounting, reporting and assurance. Keyword cooccurrence analyses have identified key themes in sustainability accounting, reporting and assurance, highlighting the transformative role of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT) and big data. These technologies enhance corporate accountability, transparency and sustainability by automating processes and improving data accuracy. The integration of these technologies supports environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting, circular economy initiatives and strategic decision-making, fostering economic, social and environmental sustainability. Cluster-by-coupling analyses delve into nine broader revealing that IoT improves ESG report accuracy, eXtensible Business Reporting Language structures ESG data and AI enhances life cycle assessments and reporting authenticity. In addition, digital transformation impacts environmental performance, big data optimizes resource use and edge computing improves eco-efficiency. Furthermore, this study identifies avenues for future research to advance the understanding and implementation of digital technology in sustainability accounting, reporting and assurance practices.

Research limitations/implications

Academically, this research enriches the understanding of how digital technologies shape sustainability practices and identifies gaps in digital knowledge and integration. Practically, it provides actionable insights for organizations to improve sustainability reporting and performance by effectively leveraging these technologies. Policy-wise, the findings advocate for frameworks supporting the effective implementation of these technologies, ensuring alignment with global sustainability goals.

Originality/value

This study offers a detailed analysis of the performance and intellectual framework of research on implementing digital technology in sustainability accounting, reporting and assurance. It highlights the evolving research landscape and emphasizes the need for further investigation into how emerging technologies can be leveraged to achieve sustainability goals.

Abstract

Purpose

To augment sales revenue, B2B digital start-ups aim to create and sustain commercial relationships with industry incumbents. However, since these incumbents have traditionally struggled with implementing disruptive digital artifacts, most studies have almost exclusively concentrated on their challenges, leaving the digital start-ups' side underexplored. Therefore, this study seeks to understand how digital start-ups navigate digital implementation (DI) hardships to ultimately achieve digital entrepreneurship success.

Design/methodology/approach

An abductive explanatory multi-case study of four industries that pose a variety of implementation challenges for B2B digital start-ups (agriculture, insurance, real estate and construction, and healthcare) was conducted using data collected from 40 interviews with Israeli experts and relevant digital data observations.

Findings

This study articulates two main observations. (1) Throughout their journeys, digital start-ups have utilized newly created and/or refined dynamic capabilities (DC) to successfully implement their digital artifacts. Simultaneously, successful DI has enabled digital start-ups to create new DC or sustain and evolve current DC. (2) We provide empirical evidence outlining how digital start-ups using continuous learning have combined causation and effectuation logic throughout their DI journeys.

Originality/value

This study answers a call to explore more explicit digital-related drivers (i.e. DI) for digital entrepreneurship success by studying a highly-ranked country on the Global Entrepreneurship Index (GEI) to achieve this. Moreover, it illustrates how digital start-ups evolve throughout their commercial relationships with industry incumbents, thereby enabling an effective approach for successful DI. Such an approach can be considered very valuable for both practitioners and policymakers. Consequently, it advances digital entrepreneurship as an independent research topic.
