Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the spatio-temporal dynamic characteristics and influencing factors of the coordination degree of the three systems of digital economy, energy and human habitat in Western China and to provide academic research support for promoting coordinated and sustainable development in similar regions of the world.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on system theory and sustainable development theory, this study primarily uses the coupled coordination degree model to assess the degree of coordination between the three systems.

Findings

The findings of this study indicate that: The three systems’ overall coordination is low. The distribution of the degree of coordination has spatial differences and its coefficient of variation is small. The probability of the coordination type changing for the better is greater than that of the opposite, and neighboring provinces interact with one another. The old-age dependence ratio, the resident population’s urbanization rate and public budget expenditure have the strongest gray association with the degree of coordination.

Practical implications

This study’s findings will be valuable for policymakers in developing policies to promote the coordinated and sustainable growth of the region’s digital economy, energy and human habitat. Additionally, the findings will aid in facilitating regional exchanges and cooperation to enhance the level of sustainable development.

Social implications

This study’s findings will contribute to increased social interest in coordinating sustainable growth in the digital economy, energy and human habitat.

Originality/value

This study examines the digital economy, energy and human habitat within the same framework and investigates spatial spillover effects using spatial Markov chains.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the relationship between global unity and cultural diversity in an interconnected world, examining how globalization influences cultural exchange while preserving identities. Using hybrid thematic content analysis (HTCA), it reveals how cross-cultural collaboration can be fostered amid global challenges like climate change, health crises and technology. The research offers insights into integrating global efforts with local cultural nuances to create sustainable solutions. By bridging qualitative and quantitative approaches, it provides new perspectives on harmonizing global interconnectedness with cultural preservation in governance, technological innovation, diplomacy and education.

Design/methodology/approach

This research applied content analysis, thematic analysis and HTCA to examine global unity and cultural diversity. Content analysis highlighted key themes in international frameworks, whereas thematic analysis delved into elements promoting cultural preservation and adaptation. HTCA synthesized these insights, combining content-focused themes with broader cultural, economic and policy perspectives. Data sources included academic literature, international policy documents and case studies from UNESCO and regional cultural policies.

Findings

The findings reveal that while globalization drives global unity, cultural diversity remains crucial for preserving individual identities. Key themes include multiculturalism, cultural exchange, hybridization and resistance to homogenization. While globalization can erode local traditions, it also fosters cultural enrichment, seen in fusion cuisine, multilingualism and ethical fashion. The research identifies strategies for balancing global unity and cultural diversity, such as hybrid approaches to environmental sustainability, integrating cultural insights into global health and inclusive technological innovations like AI and virtual reality. It also highlights the role of institutions like UNESCO in promoting cultural diplomacy and the challenges in balancing global governance with cultural diversity.

Research limitations/implications

This research is limited by its reliance on secondary data from policy documents and literature, without primary data from affected communities or policymakers. Future studies could incorporate interviews and surveys to gain first-hand perspectives. In addition, the geographic focus on documented globalization effects limits broader applicability; more inclusive case studies across diverse cultural contexts are recommended.

Practical implications

The study offers actionable insights for policymakers, educators and cultural leaders to promote inclusive cultural exchange and hybridization strategies. It emphasizes balancing globalization benefits with cultural heritage protection. Practical applications in education, health and technology should consider cultural differences for more inclusive and effective solutions, such as integrating global citizenship and cultural sensitivity in educational policies.

Social implications

The study emphasizes how intercultural understanding and collaboration can enhance social cohesion in multicultural societies. It advocates for celebrating diversity, fostering cultural dialogue and promoting inclusive global policies to build peace and address global issues while maintaining diverse identities.

Originality/value

This study’s originality lies in its methodological triangulation, using HTCA as a novel approach to unify content and thematic insights. By integrating content analysis, thematic analysis and HTCA, this research offers a unique multidimensional analysis of global unity and cultural diversity, revealing how these aspects can coexist within globalization.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to understand how quantum leaders influence employee work behavior through effective tasks.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, 516 questionnaires were collected using the interval data method to explore the triggering mechanisms and paths of emerging quantum leadership on constructive deviance.

Findings

The findings indicate that quantum leadership promotes constructive deviance through facilitating recovery experience (affective path), job crafting (task path) and the chained mediation path between the two. Additionally, the moderating effect of openness to experience strengthens the pathways between quantum leadership and recovery experience, and between quantum leadership and job crafting.

Research limitations/implications

This study focuses closely on the mechanism of leadership behavior on employees, neglecting the psychological state and behavior of the leader as a key resource element in the work environment. Quantum leadership emphasizes value-bound characteristics, so the role played by quantum leaders may vary in different cultures and values.

Practical implications

First, this study calls for the organizational management focusing on the advantages of quantum leadership thinking and its positive effects in practice. Second, the mediating mechanisms of recovery experience and job crafting provide insights into how quantum leadership can be used to enhance constructive deviance. Third, this study elucidates how individual responses to organizational environment and leadership style vary in management practices. Our study helps managers better understand how individual characteristics, such as openness to experience, influence managerial behavior.

Social implications

This study enriches the qualitative research on emerging “quantum” perspectives of leadership, expands the mechanism of employee constructive deviance and highlights the need for organizations to take measures that encourage constructive deviance by their employees, as this can lead to high-quality and long-term growth.

Originality/value

Based on conservation of resources theory, authors revealed the mechanisms by which quantum leadership influences employees’ constructive deviance, confirming the mediating role of recovery experience and job crafting as well as the moderating role of openness to employee experience. We explored the moderating mechanisms of the individual trait of openness to experience in the quantum leadership-to-job crafting and the recovery experience-to-job crafting.

Purpose

In recent years, the incidence of cardiovascular disease has continued to rise, and early screening and prevention are especially critical. Phonocardiography (PCG) and electrocardiography (ECG), as simple, cost-effective and non-invasive tests, are important tools for clinical analysis. However, it is difficult to fully reflect the complexity of the cardiovascular system using PCG or ECG tests alone. Combining the multimodal signals of PCG and ECG can provide complementary information to improve the detection accuracy. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to propose a multimodal signal classification method based on continuous wavelet transform and improved ResNet18.

Design/methodology/approach

The classification method is based on the ResNet18 backbone, and the ResNet18 network is improved by embedding the global grouped coordinate attention mechanism module and the improved bidirectional feature pyramid network. Firstly, a data acquisition system was built using a MEMS-integrated PCG-ECG sensor to construct a private data set. Second is the time-frequency transformation of PCG and ECG synchronized signals on public and private data sets using continuous wavelet transform. Finally, the time-frequency images are categorized.

Findings

The global grouped coordinate attention mechanism and bidirectional feature pyramid network modules proposed in this paper significantly enhance the model’s performance. On public data sets, the method achieves precision, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and F1 score of 97.96%, 98.51%, 97.58%, 98.08% and 98.23%, respectively, which represent improvements of 3.54%, 3.92%, 4.18%, 4.03% and 3.72% compared to ResNet18. Additionally, it demonstrates a clear advantage over existing mainstream algorithms. On private data sets, the method’s five metrics are 98.15%, 98.76%, 98.08%, 98.42% and 98.45%, further validating the model’s generalization ability.

Originality/value

The method proposed in this paper not only improves the accuracy and efficiency of the test but also provides an effective solution for early screening and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how big data adoption (BA) helps to improve innovation capability, supply chain integration, resilience and organizational performance through direct and mediating mechanisms.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a combination of meta-analytic approaches (meta-structural equation modeling and meta-regression) using 205 effect sizes from 76 prior empirical studies. It leverages the organization information processing theory as a theoretical lens to analyze the proposed relationships. This study estimates heterogeneity in the relationship between BA and innovation capability based on the meta-regression by considering different types of moderators: digital competitiveness score (DCS), national culture, type of economies and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.

Findings

The findings indicate that BA improves the innovation capability of the organization, supply chain integration and resilience, which consequently drives organizational performance. The results show that the innovation capability mediating effect is higher between BA and supply chain integration than between BA and supply chain resilience link. However, supply chain resilience and integration are equally effective in translating innovation capability influence to organizational performance. The authors find that developing countries reap more benefits from BA in driving innovation, and country culture plays a vital role in driving innovations.

Research limitations/implications

This study offers multiple theoretical implications. First, deriving from organization information processing theory, the authors recognized that BA and innovation capability complement each other, which improves the information processing capacity of the organizations, enabling supply chain integration, resilience and organizational performance (Bahrami et al., 2022; Gupta et al., 2020; Chatterjee et al., 2022). This study is one of few that analyzed how BA and innovation capability work together to drive supply chain integration, resilience and organizational performance, which was not collectively studied in existing studies, meta-analyses or reviews to ascertain the direct and mediating mechanisms (Aryal et al., 2020; Oesterreich et al., 2022; Ansari and Ghasemaghaei, 2023; Bag and Rahman, 2023; Alvarenga et al., 2023). Second, our study offers integrated and more definitive results regarding identified relationships. More precisely, the study provides statistically significant direct effects with the help of meta-analysis and meta-structural equation modeling to remove the ambiguity in the literature. Third, apart from the above definitive relationships, mediation analysis contributes to academia in identifying significant mediating mechanisms related to innovation capability, supply chain integration and resilience. Innovation capability partially and significantly mediates between BA and supply chain integration/resilience. Fourth, meta-regression provides valuable insights related to DCS, national culture and type of economies in the supply chain context. In fact, this study is the first one to examine the effects of DCS and all dimensions of national culture on the BA−INV relationship and overcome certain limitations that exist in the literature (Oesterreich et al., 2022; Ansari and Ghasemaghaei, 2023; Nakandala et al., 2023).

Practical implications

Big data is captured through evolving digital technologies such as intelligent sensors, radio frequency identification tags, global positioning system (GPS) locations and social media, which generate large data sets. Thus, managers must extract value from such a large data set and transition from big data to BA. This transition encompasses retrieving unknown patterns and insights from big data, its interpretations and extracting meaningful actions (Gupta et al., 2020; Hallikas et al., 2021). This study confirms that organizational capabilities in terms of BA and innovation enable supply chain integration and resilience. Managers must concentrate on BA and innovation capability simultaneously rather than making a trade-off between capabilities (Morita and Machuca, 2018) to drive supply chain integration, resilience and performance. For example, Morita and Machuca (2018) study revealed that many companies are doing trade-offs between capabilities and innovation. Hence, the findings clarified confusion among practitioners and confirmed that BA improves innovation capability, consequently enabling higher supply chain integration and resilience. Thus, managers investing in innovation capability will be more confident about integration, resilience and performance outcomes.

Originality/value

This is one of the early studies that examine the underlying mechanisms of innovation capability, supply chain integration and resilience between BA and organizational performance. Moderation analysis with a DCS, national culture, type of economies and GDP per capita explains the heterogeneity between the BA and innovation capability relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

The emergence of the COVID-19 epidemic has considerably increased the intricacy of information, exacerbating the difficulties firms encounter in efficiently processing and understanding accurate data and knowledge. Consequently, the COVID-19 epidemic has profoundly exacerbated production ambiguity for firms, thereby disrupting their regular business operations and supply chain activities. Digital technologies (DTs) are essential tools for firms to process and interpret information and knowledge, thereby improving their resilience against supply chain interruptions.

Design/methodology/approach

This research investigates the effect of digital technologies on firm resilience throughout COVID-19, utilizing PLS-SEM and artificial neural networks (ANN) derived from a comprehensive survey of Pakistani manufacturing firms.

Findings

Our research assesses the mediating role of supply chain integration, memory, and absorptive capacity, as well as the moderating influence of information complexity. The outcomes demonstrate that supply chain integration (SCI), memory (SCM), and absorptive capacity (SCAC) mediate digital technologies’ influence on firm resilience. Moreover, in situations where information is highly complex, DTs have a greater effect on a firm’s resilience.

Originality/value

The results enhance our comprehension and awareness of the resilience-related effects of DTs and offer significant management insights for strengthening firm resilience in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

There is an emerging paradigm with reference to marketing communication, i.e. inclusive marketing communication (IMC). This calls for brands to be sincere with their customers and give due recognition and representation to underrepresented groups, communities and individuals. In this constantly evolving and globalized world, consumers have become more sensitive towards authentic portrayals of inclusivity and diversity by brands while choosing one brand over another.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed method approach was used whereas in the first study, a quantitative method was used. Standardized questionnaire was used for collecting data through a time-lagged method. While the second study adopted the qualitative method. Semi-structured interviews were performed which lasted for 30–45 min for most of the participants.

Findings

It was found that IMC has a positive and noticeable effect on brand attitude (BA) and brand love (BL) when mediated by social identity (SI). While stigmatization was found to positively and significantly moderate the relationship between IMC and SI. Moreover, it was also found from both the studies that if a brand fails to strengthen the SI of an individual it doesn’t affect the BA as well as BL of customers.

Originality/value

Very few studies have incorporated a quantitative method of study while studying IMC. Furthermore, a collective study on different aspects of inclusivity like ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, physical attractiveness, etc., has not been explored yet. Scattered studies on aspects like skin tone, body size, religion, etc., have been explored individually in prior studies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the effects of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on accounting conservatism in Korean firms. An increase in EPU could widen information asymmetry between insiders and outsiders, to the detriment of a firm’s investment decisions, stock price and cost of capital. This paper hypothesizes that Korean firms are likely to decrease accounting conservatism during high EPU due to inefficient institutional structure and weak corporate governance, together with the vulnerability of the Korean economy to exogenous shocks.

Design/methodology/approach

This study measures a firm’s level of conservatism using three accrual-based models proposed by Ball and Shivakumar (2006): 1) the cash flow model (CF model), 2) the Dechow and Dichev model (DD model) and 3) the Jones model. As a robustness test, this paper uses C-score model as an alternative measure of accounting conservatism. The data set used in this study is a total of 23,109 firm-year observations during the sample period from 2000 to 2018.

Findings

The test results show that an increase in EPU adversely affects Korean firms’ accounting conservatism, and that this adverse impact is more pronounced in financially distressed and non-manufacturing firms. This study’s findings highlight the importance of institutional structure during a period of high EPU, which can create incentives for either improving or deteriorating reporting quality.

Originality/value

This study adds new evidence to extant literature on the effects of EPU on managers’ choice of accounting policies and demonstrates that managers in emerging markets may have different incentives to cope with country-specific EPU fluctuations.
