Abstract

Purpose

The authors describe an original unit plan that draws from local and national concerns for truthful history education about the history of racial violence in the United States. The unit plan contextualizes one impetus for truth and reconciliation in a community with a history of anti-Black violence.

Design/methodology/approach

The participants partnered with the Equal Justice Initiative to pilot the unit in their district’s new African American History course. The unit drew on historical research and cultural memory to situate local history within a broader context of racism and violence.

Findings

The teachers identified eight goals for the unit so that students could understand racialized violence, acknowledge racism as the lived experience of many of their students, and participate in a collaborative learning environment with productive discussions. Speaking from their own experiences with racism, and creating opportunities for students to do the same, the teachers aided the community in voicing long-silenced memories.

Research limitations/implications

Besides bridging some of the gaps between local, regional, and national histories, more research is needed to further examine historical trauma and its implications for both the past and present, in order to amplify and humanize experiences of racism. Additional research is a critical step in developing more thoughtful, empathic and holistic discussions of history and racism at the local level.

Practical implications

In the wake of the recent past, the authors have learned that teaching about the history of racial violence can be enhanced and empowered by reference to relevant current events. The resurgence of racially charged language and violence over the past few years makes this goal more urgent than ever. This unit gives practical guidance to teachers who face this challenge.

Social implications

The sociopolitical reality of historical trauma and racism must be confronted, and proximity to key events is important in conveying the urgency of racial violence and the need for history education that addresses it. Teachers are making difficult decisions about their options for teaching about race, and they are understandably concerned about any perceived missteps. Nonetheless, inclusive, truthful history education is an appropriate and essential response to narratives of exclusion and silence as the authors help students to develop deliberative skills concerning difficult topics such as racial violence. Teachers and students, together, can do the crucial work of remembering.

Originality/value

The stripping away of narrative agency, identity and history can cover up stories about the stripping away of life and dignity. In the unit plan, the authors recognize truth and reconciliation—especially in the education of people who have relatively little exposure to topics of race and racism—as elemental to a restorative stance against racism.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the complex and dynamic emotional journey for the returning home ethnographer.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, I reflect on my experiences of conducting a multimethod home ethnography undertaken between 2014 and 2018 in Northern Ireland, which explored the emotional legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict, euphemistically referred to as “The Troubles”. Throughout the process, I maintained textual and digital reflective journals to record my observations, thoughts and feelings. In reviewing these journals, I identified that they traced my evolving emotions as they related to my perceptions of home and homelessness. These journals have formed the basis of this paper.

Findings

In the paper, I give insights into the complex and evolving emotions I experienced throughout my home ethnography. In the early stages of my research, I explore the romanticism I experienced as I desperately tried to reconnect with my home. I then reflect on the ambivalent emotions I developed towards Northern Ireland as I spent more time there, simultaneously experiencing feelings of frustration and sometimes fear intertwined with a strong desire to fit in and belong there. Finally, I came to experience the bittersweet emotion, nostalgia, realising that one can never truly go home again because of the irreversibility of time.

Originality/value

By sharing my story, I aim to -contribute to the literature on home ethnography by providing new insights into the complex and evolving range of emotions encountered throughout the different stages of home ethnography. Additionally, I aim to contribute to the problematization of Alvesson’s (2009) definition of home ethnography by exploring the insider/outsider dichotomy for a returning ethnographer positioned within a deeply sectarian and segregated society. Finally, I provide insights into the long-term emotional impact of forced displacement due to the Northern Ireland conflict.

Abstract

Purpose

Matching foods available at food pantries to client preferences provides a variety of benefits and should be viewed as a best practice.

Design/methodology/approach

Data on food pantry client demographics and choices were collected throughout 2019, resulting in 467,384 recorded food choices. Households were segmented using a cluster analysis based on observed choices. Next, a variety of demographics-based statistical models were built to predict food choice segment membership.

Findings

Six different segments of clients emerge from the choice data. Some segments choose mostly fruits and vegetables; other segments prefer different options such as grains, animal protein, plant protein or easier-to-prepare but more processed combination foods. Further, these choice-based segments can be predicted with varying levels of accuracy using demographic information. This highlights that the food people choose is related to their identities. For example, as household size grows, clients are less likely to belong to the segment preferring combination foods and more likely to belong to the segment preferring fresh fruits and vegetables. However, other demographics are more predictive of different segments; for example, Asian households are more likely to belong to segments that show preference for plant proteins or for grains.

Originality/value

Large-scale data on pantry client choice is exceedingly rare. The authors use this unique data set to propose food pantries understand their clients better through traditional marketing methods, specifically segmentation.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to dynamic work contexts, mid-level managers struggle to advance their careers in contemporary organisations. Literature has consistently showcased that leadership style and gender significantly impact subordinates’ career and work-related outcomes. This study investigates the relationship between authentic leadership, gender, perceived career barriers and occupational well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

Using self-report questionnaires, we collected data from 198 mid-level managers employed in the information technology (IT) sector in Delhi-NCR. We tested two mediation models simultaneously, investigating the mediation of perceived career barriers on occupational well-being. Authentic leadership and gender were the predictors of the first and second models, respectively.

Findings

Authentic leadership was positively associated with occupational well-being but negatively with perceived career barriers. Perceived career barriers partially mediated the link between authentic leadership and occupational well-being. Gender had a significant impact on perceived career barriers. Finally, perceived career barriers fully mediated the association between gender and occupational well-being.

Research limitations/implications

The study showed that perceived career barriers were predicted by authentic leadership perception. In the face of career-related obstacles, managers with authentic leaders tend to have better well-being at the workplace. Further, perceived career barriers are essential in the relationship between gender and occupational well-being. However, the context of India’s IT sector is unique; therefore, caution must be practised when generalising.

Practical implications

Organisations must promote authentic leadership at the upper echelons. Such a leadership style helps reduce the hurdles for managers and improves their well-being. Furthermore, addressing gender-specific career barriers, such as lack of cultural fit, is the key to enhancing female managers’ well-being.

Originality/value

We turned towards positive psychology and utilised the construct of authentic leadership to address the issues of career barriers and diversity in IT organisations.

Abstract

Purpose

Research examines the effectiveness of different-race presenter avatar use on bias reduction in single-session online diversity training. Building on research that indicates different-race presenter use in in-person diversity training and different-race presenter avatars in online interactions are effective in reducing bias, this paper aims to test the use of simulated Inter Group Social Contact (IGSC) theory in single-session online diversity training. Undergraduate business students at nine United States institutes of higher education participated in an online training module that provided either a same-race or different-race presenter avatar to each participant. Participants then completed the Modern Racism Scale. The data were analyzed using T-tests and an analysis of covariance. Potential drawbacks to the use of different-race presenters and the diversity of the student bodies at participating institutions are considered. Results suggest that the use of different-race presenter avatars in brief online diversity training does result in less racial bias in some groups but is not effective among the groups such training is designed to affect. The results are cautionary. Organizations are advised to use multi-installment training programs when using a different-race presenter avatar to improve the effectiveness of online diversity training.

Design/methodology/approach

Participants were asked to answer demographic questions, to view a video with one of two avatars representing the online diversity training presenter, then to complete the Modern Racism Scale questionnaire. Results were evaluated based on school membership, representing the diversity of the school’s student body, gender and self-identified race using Independent T-tests and covariate analysis.

Findings

The effect of the use of different-race presenter was minimal and was not uniform across groups. Bias was not reduced in male or nonminority groups. Felt bias of minority respondents was reduced. There was a weak correlation between the diversity of school populations and the effect of different-race diversity presenters.

Research limitations/implications

Participants were undergraduate students invited to participate by their instructors. Participants self-identified their gender and race.

Practical implications

The use of different-race diversity presenters in single session online diversity training is cautioned against.

Social implications

Though the use of different-race diversity training presenters has been found to reduce bias in multisession online training and in in-person training, the use of different-race diversity training presenters may not be beneficial in single session online diversity training. Thus, this innovation is limited in its use. Specifically, felt bias by the object of bias was reduced, which is considered a negative response to diversity training. Single session online diversity training is more likely to be used by smaller firms which employ much of the workforce.

Originality/value

The effect of different-race diversity presenters had been tested in multisession online training and in in-person training, but not in single-session diversity training.

Abstract

Purpose

The transition period from eating disorder inpatient (IP) care to outpatient care can be difficult for patients and is often characterised by high relapse rates. This study aims to co-develop a novel treatment pathway to support patients during this critical period.

Design/methodology/approach

This was a mixed-methods case study using co-production methodology and a nested qualitative component. The authors co-developed an initial proposed pathway structure with clinicians and people with lived experience of an eating disorder, based on a review of the literature. They then conducted interviews with clinicians and patients (n = 8) to refine the pathway; these were analysed using framework analysis.

Findings

A four-component pathway structure was developed. Six main themes emerged from this qualitative analysis: autonomy, the need for holistic patient care, difficult experiences, service provision, relationships and feedback on the discharge pathway.

Practical implications

This study highlighted the importance of centring patient autonomy during treatment, as well as ensuring treatments are holistic in nature. This may reduce the high levels of relapse associated with discharge from IP treatment and improve the quality and effectiveness of eating disorder treatment delivered.

Originality/value

Co-production approaches were used to develop the IP discharge pathway with members of a Lived Experience Advisory Panel alongside clinicians. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study was also the first intervention development study aimed at providing targeted support for patients dealing with the adverse effects of hospitalisation and difficulties transitioning to outpatient care.
