Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to understand the importance of endomarketing in organizations and whether internal strategies are essential in the management of human capital. Especially, it is intended to understand what kind of policies is adopted in the organizations the authors are dealing with, and also the perception that employees have about them.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology adopted combines a quantitative and qualitative approach, based on documents analysis, and the survey and semi-structured interviews with questions alluding to endomarketing. The study was carried out in the (Portuguese) cities belonging to the Minho Quadrilateral, being Braga, Barcelos, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão, in which a total of five organizations are held.

Findings

The results seem to show that endomarketing has an essential role in human capital management, in particular, to obtain both individual and organizational results, where there is a mutual relationship. Of the 158 respondents that make up the sample, it was concluded that 78.5% considered the intrinsic factors related to well-being and happiness as important as the extrinsic factors related to monetary rewards.

Research limitations/implications

The manuscript presents insights for internal marketing and human resource management (i.e. motivation and human capital). Based on the rapid and profound technological changes of the early 21st century, the concept of endomarketing emerged stimulated by globalization and by the greater concern to adopt strategies that were able to differentiate organizations in the markets.

Originality/value

This is an interdisciplinary theme, with contributions to both internal marketing and human resource management, bearing in mind to enhancing the value and well-being of organizational human capital. This study aims to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge in this area that is so relevant for growth and differentiation.

Abstract

Purpose

This work aims to integrate the concepts generated by a systematic literature review on patient flows in emergency departments (ED) to serve as a basis for developing a generic process model for ED.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was conducted using PRISMA guidelines, considering Lean Healthcare interventions describing ED patients’ flows. The initial search found 141 articles and 18 were included in the systematic analysis. The literature analysis served as the basis for developing a generic process model for ED.

Findings

ED processes have been represented using different notations, such as value stream mapping and workflows. The main alternatives for starting events are arrival by ambulance or walk-in. The Manchester Triage Scale (MTS) was the most common protocol referred to in the literature. The most common end events are admission to a hospital, transfer to other facilities or admission to an ambulatory care system. The literature analysis allowed the development of a generic process model for emergency departments. Nevertheless, considering that several factors influence the process of an emergency department, such as pathologies, infrastructure, available teams and local regulations, modelling alternatives and challenges in each step of the process should be analysed according to the local context.

Originality/value

A generic business process model was developed using BPMN that can be used by practitioners and researchers to reduce the effort in the initial stages of design or improvement projects. Moreover, it’s a first step toward the development of generalizable and replicable solutions for emergency departments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence that the occurrence of greenwashing has on the consumer perception of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Design/methodology/approach

This paper observed the market indication that a consistent undermining of authentic commitment to CSR taints consumer perception. Investigating how the motivations behind greenwashing contribute to the presentation of CSR was the first means of examining the market forces. Consumer orientation was used as a guiding principle to consider the short- and long-term perspective of a greenwasher.

Findings

Individual instances of greenwashing contribute to a collective deterioration of marketplace trust in the promises of CSR. The negative influence on CSR is not isolated to the greenwashing perpetrator but casts a wider effect. The consequences of greenwashing are not isolated but widely dispersed.

Originality/value

Whilst much of the literature focuses on the stigmatisation of individual firms, it is crucial to note how marketplace trust is eroded. In addition, the perception of CSR-related regulations is for example influenced but rarely recognised as a consequence of greenwashing behaviour.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore relationships between strategic planning and the adoption of the circular economy (CE), addressing a gap in current research about the role strategic planning plays in supporting the implementation of CE.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the objective of this research, case studies were conducted at four Canadian companies with well-established environmental sustainability strategies.

Findings

The findings highlight the importance of engaging both internal and external stakeholders in facilitating knowledge exchange, as it is essential for strategic planning in CE initiatives. Additionally, the commitment of companies to circularity principles and the use of formal strategic planning tools are identified as valuable assets in the integration process. The study also presents and analyzes the challenges of integrating CE into companies’ strategic planning.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature by shedding light on the interplay between strategic planning and CE adoption, offering insights into the complexities and opportunities involved in integrating CE principles into organizational strategies. A framework for the integration of CE into strategic planning is also proposed.

Abstract

Purpose: With a focus on its foundations, significance, applications, and results, this chapter attempts to investigate the idea of Green HRM, or Green Human Resources Management, in the context of changing business environments.

Need for the study: The growing focus on environmental sustainability is a challenge for HR professionals in terms of successfully integrating eco-friendly practices into HR initiatives. The benefits and ramifications of implementing Green HRM are discussed in this paper, which also highlights the growing significance of incorporating environmental issues into HRM processes.

Methodology: The chapter investigates the principles and results of Green HRM by conducting a thorough analysis of the body of existing literature and empirical investigations. The influence of eco-friendly HRM on work-related attitudes, productivity, resource efficiency, waste reduction, work–life balance, cost savings, and employee performance and retention is examined using a qualitative approach.

Findings: The results indicate that implementing Green HRM has a favorable impact on a number of organizational functioning elements. In addition to encouraging resource efficiency and waste reduction, it improves staff attitudes, productivity, and retention. Green HRM also helps to create workplaces that are socially and environmentally conscious.

Practical implications: The study provides useful insights for HR practitioners by highlighting the core components of Green HRM that enhance conventional HRM methods. Organizations can develop sustainable workplaces that meet environmental goals while improving overall performance and employee well-being by integrating eco-friendly activities into HR strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to examine the joint effects of foreign ownership (FO) and involvement in global value chains (GVCs) on the productivity performance of firms from a catching-up country (Poland) and a leader economy (Germany).

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use micro-level data on firms combined with several sector-level GVC participation measures. The authors investigate whether the link between productivity and the overall sectoral degree of involvement in global production structures depends on a firm's ownership. The authors verify the robustness of the obtained results by using an instrumental variables approach and weighted regression.

Findings

The results show that domestically owned firms are less productive than foreign ones, which is particularly true at low GVC participation levels. However, as GVC involvement increases, the FO productivity premium decreases, leading to productivity catching up between foreign and domestically owned firms. This mechanism is similar in Poland and Germany. However, in the leader country (Germany), the productivity performance of domestically owned firms is more stable along the distribution of GVC involvement.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the foreign direct investment (FDI)–productivity literature by comparing the catching-up and developed countries' perspectives and incorporating the productivity–GVC relationship into the FDI analysis. The authors show that the FO premium is not confined to the developing context but is also present in a leader country. Moreover, the link between productivity and the overall sectoral degree of involvement in global production structures depends on a firm's ownership.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present an overview of the current Brazilian broadband policy and identify the key factors that could contribute to its successful implementation and avoid duplication of support and infrastructure and save public money.

Design/methodology/approach

First, an exhaustive survey was carried out on all broadband programs active in Brazil, listing the main objectives, beneficiaries and budget. As a qualitative and quantitative method, FODG (fragmentation, overlap, duplication and gaps) analysis was applied to the 17 programs identified, and then a case study of overlapping was presented. Finally, the Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate the potential financial benefits resulting from correcting the overlapping broadband programs.

Findings

Results show that the current broadband policy implemented in Brazil has signs of fragmentation, overlap and duplication between programs and a great focus on the dimensions of deployment and universalization of broadband service, to the detriment of those related to meaningful communication.

Research limitations/implications

The scarcity and incongruity of panel data are the main research limitations for a more extensive comparative study.

Practical implications

The findings indicate the need to implement a national broadband strategy with a long-term vision, instrumentalized in a plan, and multisectoral and interfederative coordination based on efficient planning.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first paper to compare broadband programs in Brazil from various perspectives of public policy and estimate financial benefits using a mathematical model.

Abstract

Purpose

Inspired by the internationalisation paths to prosperity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), where narcissistic leaders are diligent about organisations but also pursue their dark goals, this study aims to concurrently examine two avenues for the internationalisation of narcissistic leaders in SMEs concerning the function of team organisational citizenship behaviours (OCB): corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) and digital business model innovation (BMI).

Design/methodology/approach

This study utilised a quantitative design emphasising mature theory research, and data was analysed using multiple regression analysis and Hayes' process model. The data for this study was collected via surveys from 270 SMEs in Vietnam.

Findings

The study showed that narcissistic Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) can penetrate the global market profoundly by utilising both the righteous path, which is based on the power of the times via BMI, and the unethical path, CSI. However, team devotion via OCB can mitigate the unethical conduct of narcissistic CEOs.

Practical implications

The study endeavoured to find a path to internationalisation for SMEs in emerging markets with high economic openness and increasingly close connections with international markets, via two strategies for SMEs to conquer the international market more successfully, and with utilising the foundations of CEO narcissism and team citizenship behaviour.

Originality/value

This study contributed to the theory of SME internationalisation by employing the resource-based view and upper-echelon theory, with the updated Uppsala model as its foundation.

Abstract

Purpose

We examine the impact of private equity on corporate governance across industries and countries.

Design/methodology/approach

We gathered data from 15 countries and 16 industries spanning the period from 2005 to 2015 to construct an average corporate governance index and track private equity deals across both industries and countries. We analyze a country-industry-year panel dataset and address endogeneity issues.

Findings

The results indicate a strong and significant relationship between private equity activity and corporate governance quality. When the private equity investment begins earlier, it is more relevant to the corporate governance quality. Foreign private equity investment seems to complement domestic private equity to improve corporate governance in settings with low domestic private equity activity. The experience of the fund that originates the private equity activity is also a determinant of the quality of the corporate governance spillover.

Practical implications

Governments and institutions should promote private equity by creating a regulatory environment that attracts investment funds to countries or sectors that lack robust governance frameworks. Investors can design more effective governance practices according to the specific needs of their industries and countries. Shareholders would better understand how private equity corporate governance practices complement the company’s long-term strategies. Finally, the market would benefit from the confidence in private equity investors that promote international corporate governance practices that are valuable to the stakeholders.

Originality/value

This research expands our understanding of the benefits of private equity activity on corporate governance quality across industries. We posit the importance of foreign private equity investors complementing domestic private equity activity and fund characteristics such as their experience in boosting corporate governance.

Abstract

Purpose

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) cost of a facility is typically 60–85% of the total life cycle cost of a building whereas its design and construction cost accounts for only 5–10%. Therefore, enhancing and optimizing the O&M of a facility is a crucial issue. In addition, with the increasing complexities in a building's operating systems, more technologically advanced solutions are required for proactively maintaining a facility. Thereby, a tool is needed which can optimize and reduce the cost of facility maintenance. One of the solutions is Augmented or Mixed Reality (AR/MR) technologies which can reduce repair time, training time and streamline inspections. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish contextual knowledge of AR/MR application in facilities operation and maintenance and present an implementation framework through the analysis and classification of articles published between 2015 and 2022.

Design/methodology/approach

To effectively understand all AR/MR applications in facilities management (FM), a systematic literature review is performed. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) protocol was followed for searching and describing the search strategies. Keywords were identified through the concept mapping technique. The Scopus database and Google Scholar were employed to find relevant articles, books and conference papers. A thorough bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOS Viewer and subsequently, a thematic analysis was performed for the selected publications.

Findings

The use of AR/MR within facilities O&M could be categorized into five different application areas: (1) visualization; (2) maintenance; (3) indoor localization and positioning; (4) information management and (5) indoor environment. After a thematic analysis of the literature, it was found that maintenance and indoor localization were the most frequently used research application domains. The chronological evolution of AR/MR in FM is also presented along with the origin of publications, which showed that the technology is out of its infancy stage and is ready for implementation. However, literature showed many challenges hindering this goal, that is (1) reluctance of the organizational leadership to bear the cost of hardware and trainings for the employees, (2) Lack of BIM use in FM and (3) system lagging, crashing and unable to register the real environment. A preliminary framework is presented to overcome these challenges.

Originality/value

This study accommodates a variety of application domains within facilities O&M. The publications were systematically selected from the existing literature and then reviewed to exhibit various AR/MR applications to support FM. There have been no literature reviews that focus on AR and/or MR in the FM and this paper fills the gap by not only presenting its applications but also developing an implementation framework.
