Abstract

Purpose

This study explores how chatbot gender and symbolic service recovery may improve the satisfaction of angry customers in the context of service failures. It provides a strategy for companies to deploy chatbots effectively in customer anger.

Design/methodology/approach

This research relies upon a systematic literature review to propose three hypotheses, and we recruit 826 participants to examine the effect of chatbot gender on angry customers through one lab study and one field study.

Findings

This research shows that female chatbots are more likely to increase the satisfaction of angry customers than male chatbots in service failure scenarios. In addition, symbolic recovery (apology vs. appreciation) moderates the effect of chatbot gender on angry customers. Specifically, male (vs. female) chatbots are more effective in increasing the satisfaction of angry customers when using the apology method, whereas female (vs. male) chatbots are more effective when using the appreciation method.

Originality/value

The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence technology have significantly enhanced the effectiveness of chatbots as virtual agents in the field of interactive marketing. Previous research has concluded that chatbots can reduce negative customer feedback following a service failure. However, these studies have primarily focused on the level of chatbot anthropomorphism and the design of conversational texts, rather than the gender of chatbots. Therefore, this study aims to bridge that gap by examining the effect of chatbot gender on customer feedback, specifically focusing on angry customers following service failures.

Abstract

Purpose

This research explores the impact of classical aesthetics (e.g. order and symmetry) and expressive aesthetics (e.g. creativity and distinctiveness) on consumer green consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

This research conducted three studies. Study 1 explored the main effect of appearance aesthetics (appearance: plain vs classical vs expressive) on green products purchase intention through a one-factor between-subjects design. Study 2 verified the mediating role of perceived naturalness through two types of appearance aesthetics (appearance: classical vs expressive) between-subjects design. Study 3 verified the moderating role of product identity-symbolic attributes through a 2 (product identity-symbolic attributes: non-identity-symbolic vs identity-symbolic attributes) × 2 (appearance: classical aesthetics vs expressive aesthetics) between-subjects design.

Findings

Consumers will be more likely to purchase a green product that has classical aesthetics appearance (vs expressive aesthetics). Perceived naturalness mediates the effect of aesthetic appearance on consumer green consumption. Product identity symbol attributes moderate this effect. Specifically, for non-identity-symbolic green products, classical aesthetics can effectively enhance consumer purchase intention. For identity-symbolic green products, expressive aesthetics can effectively enhance consumer purchase intention.

Originality/value

Existing research suggests that aesthetic appearance can increase consumers’ evaluation of electronic products, beauty products and food, but the difference between aesthetics has not yet been explored. This research compares two aesthetics, contributing to the literature on aesthetic appearance in green products and offering valuable insights for managers’ green products marketing.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to find out the role of green curriculum (GC) in making a green generation (GG) and ensuring sustainability. The study considers the green curriculum a key factor for understanding environmental values orientation (EVO) and adopting pro-environmental behaviors (Pr-EnB) for social, economic, human and environmental sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is quantitative and cross-sectional. Partial least square-structural equation modeling was used to test the research model and data which was collected through a questionnaire survey from university faculty and students in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and China.

Findings

The findings show that the GC has significant positive effects on EVO and pro-environmental behavior. However, it has no significant effect on social sustainability. There is a positive significant effect of pro-environmental behavior on economic, environmental, human and social sustainability. Whereas, environmental orientation has no significant effect on economic sustainability but significantly influences environmental, human and social sustainability. GC has no significant effect on economic, environmental and human sustainability. However, when considering the combined effects of GC and environmental values orientation or pro-environmental behavior, significant positive effects were found on economic, environmental, human and social sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

The result suggests that implementing a GC positively influences environmental orientation, pro-environmental behavior and various dimensions of sustainability.

Practical implications

These results have implications for educational institutions and policymakers aiming to promote sustainability through green curriculum and help in the attainment of sustainable development goals.

Originality/value

The study fulfills an essential need to obtain sustainability and sustainable development goals through education.

Abstract

Purpose

This viewpoint aims to provide an overview of graduate employability in Lebanon from the perspective of the Dean of Olayan School of Business at the American University of Beirut, who is a reputable academic leader heading a world-ranked business school. The discussion also looks at the external factors that affect graduate employability in Lebanon with direct references to the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic crisis.

Design/methodology/approach

Through conversation with the Dean of a prominent business school in Lebanon, this viewpoint discusses several topics pertaining to the concept of graduate employability.

Findings

To boost graduate employability the focus should be on developing the curriculum, engaging with the alumni network, exploiting the board of governors and building on the school’s reputation and legacy.

Originality/value

Crises do offer new opportunities. Covid-19 pandemic has prepared employers to accept the idea of remote working, which has helped in boosting graduate employability in Lebanon.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop an optimization model to enhance pipeline assembly performance. It focuses on predicting the pipeline’s assembly pose while ensuring compliance with clamp constraints.

Design/methodology/approach

The assembly pose of the pipeline is quantitatively assessed by a proposed indicator based on joint defects. The assembly interference between the pipeline and assembly boundary is characterized quantitatively. Subsequently, an analytical mapping relationship is established between the assembly pose and assembly interference. A digital fitting model, along with a novel indicator, is established to discern the fit between the pipeline and clamp. Using the proposed indicators as the optimization objective and penalty term, an optimization model is established to predict the assembly pose based on the reinforced particle swarm optimization, incorporating a proposed adaptive inertia weight.

Findings

The optimization model demonstrates robust search capability and rapid convergence, effectively minimizing joint defects while adhering to clamp constraints. This leads to enhanced pipeline assembly efficiency and the achievement of a one-time assembly process.

Originality/value

The offset of the assembly boundary and imperfections in pipeline manufacturing may lead to joint defects during pipeline assembly, as well as failure in the fit between the pipeline and clamp. The assembly pose predicted by the proposed optimization model can effectively reduce the joint defects and satisfy clamp constraints. The efficiency of pipeline modification and assembly has been significantly enhanced.

Abstract

Digital transformation (DT) has become a top priority for higher education (HE), driven by technological advances such as artificial intelligence (AI), artificial general intelligence (AGI) and Generative Open AI. It serves as a catalyst for the reshaping of mainstream processes in academic institutions, emphasizing teamwork, collaborative projects and critical thinking in research, learning and assessment strategies. In this chapter, the authors contextualize the use of this DT, highlighting its potential to improve learning experiences, business efficiency and upskill students and faculty. The holistic approach to DT as an enabler of excellence in HE is based on four pillars of excellence and impact: Business process reengineering, learning excellence and skill building, research capacity and innovation and partnership and outlook. DT needs the development of efficient, resilient, flexible and adaptable strategies and a strong collaboration between all the actors involved in the process to ensure the coherence, the sustainability and alignment of the objectives, means and targets with the real needs of the learners, tutors, labor market and society as whole. The authors’ bold proposition consists of a model for the strategy design of DT in universities and colleges organized in three dimensions: understand, strategize, deploy and exploit. Each dimension emphasizes different stages of the process: understanding emerging technologies and their impact on HE, collaboration between stakeholders, strategy and priorities formulation, roadmap of implementation, deployment and exploitation of digital technologies, etc. The ongoing DT in HE will continue to create an extensive shift in educational processes – learning, teaching, research and management. Institutions around the world are taking bold initiatives to adapt to this rapidly changing environment, emphasizing the importance of readiness for technological changes, system development, inclusive and sustainable transformation.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to address the critical area of training and development within private educational small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Pakistan. It seeks to develop and standardize training and development process in private sector educational SMEs and establish a structured approach to training with the purpose of unlocking the full potential of the workforce, advancing educators’ professional growth and propelling organizational progress.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a meticulous three-phase approach. It begins with insightful interviews with school principals to investigate existing training practices. The subsequent phase involves formulating a comprehensive training and development policy, outlining purpose, scope, responsibilities, procedures and budget allocation. This policy undergoes participatory refinement to cater to specific SME needs. In the third phase, experimental design was adopted. Two groups, the experiment group and the control group, were formulated to check the effectiveness of proposed processes.

Findings

Rigorous statistical analysis, employing paired sample t-tests, unequivocally demonstrates a significant elevation in mean scores post-implementation of standardized training and development process. These findings affirm the efficacy of the policy in enhancing the effectiveness of training and development activities in private sector educational SMEs.

Practical implications

The research highlights profound implications. By establishing a structured approach to training and development, educational SMEs can not only advance educators’ professional growth but also propel organizational progress and enhance education quality. It will provide a structured and step-by-step process to boost the work quality of staff. The study emphasizes the need for consistent implementation.

Originality/value

This research marks a substantial stride in revolutionizing how human capital is cultivated in private sector educational SMEs. It positions them to exert a transformative impact on Pakistan’s educational landscape, furthering the journey toward excellence. The study suggests avenues for future research, including the adaptation of this model to diverse educational contexts and an assessment of its scalability.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore and evaluate the current legal position on the admissibility and exclusion of illegally obtained evidence in money laundering cases.

Design/methodology/approach

A thorough exploratory analytical analysis signifies that such illegally obtained evidence from money laundering offences is admissible, provided it does not undermine the administration of justice or the right to a fair trial.

Findings

By virtue of the lack of written or codified rules governing the admissibility and exclusion of illegally obtained evidence in cases involving money laundering, the rule of admissibility remains the primary foundational principle for the governance of the admissibility and exclusion of illegally obtained evidence in money laundering cases.

Originality/value

The Malaysian Criminal Justice System has historically relied on the long-standing admissibility principles to admit and exclude illegally obtained evidence. For decades, courts have used their discretion to admit illegally obtained evidence based on the relevancy test, and they have further demonstrated to use the same discretion to exclude gravely prejudicial evidence. Evidence obtained illegally but if relevant to the matter in issue is deemed admissible. Evidence derived from an act associated with unlawful activities or a predicate offence in money laundering may be obtained illegally, which may influence the prosecution case and conversely, defend the accused’s rights to a fair trial.

Abstract

Purpose

Online portfolio selection sequentially allocates wealth among a set of assets and aims to maximize the investor’s cumulative return in the long run. Various existing algorithms in the finance and accounting area adopt an indirect approach to exploit one asset characteristic through the channel of assets’ expected return and thus cannot fully leverage the power of various asset characteristics found in the literature. This study aims to propose new algorithms to overcome this issue to enhance investment performance.

Design/methodology/approach

We propose a parameterized portfolio selection (PPS) framework, which directly incorporates multiple asset characteristics into portfolio weights. This framework can update parameters timely based on final performance without intermediate steps and produce efficient portfolios. We further append L1 regularization to constrain the number of active asset characteristics. Solving the PPS formulation numerically, we design two online portfolio selection (OLPS) algorithms via gradient descent and alternating direction method of multipliers.

Findings

Empirical results on five real market datasets show that the proposed algorithms outperform the state of the arts in cumulative returns, Sharpe ratios, winning ratios, etc. Besides, short-term characteristics are more important than long-term characteristics, and the highest return category is the most important characteristic to improve portfolio performance.

Originality/value

The proposed PPS algorithms are new end-to-end online learning approaches, which directly optimize portfolios by asset characteristics. Such approaches thus differ from existing studies, which first predict returns and then optimize portfolios. This paper provides a new algorithmic framework for investors’ OLPS.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to ascertain the impact education for sustainable development (ESD) on knowledge, attitude and behavior among senior (last year undergraduate) Indian students.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is a cross-sectional causal investigation with descriptive design using survey method. It uses the knowledge, attitude and behaviors toward the sustainable development scales of the International Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD) for data collection and partial least-square structural equation modelling for empirically testing the proposed research model.

Findings

The study results establish the importance of sustainability education on knowledge, attitude and behavior. The impact of knowledge on behavior is direct and partially mediated through the attitudinal pathway – indicating central and peripheral routes sustainability related information processing and attitude formation. The results also indicate poor knowledge of the impact of socio-cultural issues on sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

The study results will help assess the impact current ESD initiatives in India and redesign the ESD curriculum in line with ESD for 2030 initiatives to facilitate the achievement of UN’s sustainable development goals by 2030. This study is limited to senior students and offers scope for extension to other groups.

Social implications

The study results can help redesign the sustainability curriculum at the school and undergraduate levels in the country in line with ESD for 2023 objectives. The results indicate an urgent need to include the impact of sociocultural issues on sustainability to sensitize Indian students towards the same.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the sustainability education literature by assessing the impact of sustainability curricula on sustainability knowledge, attitude and behavior among Indian senior students – hitherto uninvestigated. It also will help in the informed redesign/ improvement of ESD curriculum under the ESD for 2030 initiatives.
