Abstract
Learning outcomes
This case study aims to provide a focused and specific understanding of the growth challenges faced by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) in its revenue streams, the strategies used to overcome them by adopting environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework and set global standards with universal norms and make BIAL a world-class airport by applying value, rarity, imitability and organization (VRIO) framework.
Case overview/synopsis
BIAL developed and has been operating the Kempegowda International Airport near Bengaluru in India since 2008. This city is the capital of Karnataka in India and a startup of new businesses and information technology hub. The COVID-19 pandemic had profoundly impacted aviation industry including BIAL, resulting in a significant decline in both passenger traffic and cargo handling resulting in weak profitability.
Mr Anant Sharma as chief strategist officer of the company was assigned to formulate strategies for various challenges that BIAL is facing in terms of the pending expiry of a concession agreement, decreasing non-aero revenues and making appropriate strategies to help BIAL not only to grow but also be sustainable in future.
This case study offers opportunities to students to delve into making strategic choices with developing an ESG business impact for sustainability, exploring factors which are affecting the future of airports which are followed internationally and finding key pillars for airport business to grow in its business portfolios. The case study also investigates into how BIAL would be able to accommodate demand in the next 30 years and provide readers the directions to innovate new strategies using VRIO framework to help airport to grow in right direction and become world-class airport.

This case study is suitable for basic courses in strategic management in emerging market both at postgraduate level and undergraduate level. In addition, it can be used in corporate training programs for aviation industry professionals.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to improve the detection and quantification of cardiac issues, which are a leading cause of mortality globally. By leveraging past data and using knowledge mining strategies, this study seeks to develop a technique that could assess and predict the onset of cardiac sickness in real time. The use of a triple algorithm, combining particle swarm optimization (PSO), artificial bee colony (ABC) and support vector machine (SVM), is proposed to enhance the accuracy of predictions. The purpose is to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on cardiac disease prognosis and improve overall performance in health care.
Design/methodology/approach
This research uses a knowledge-mining strategy to enhance the detection and quantification of cardiac issues. Decision trees are used to form predictions of cardiovascular disorders, and these predictions are evaluated using training data and test results. The study has also introduced a novel triple algorithm that combines three different combination processes: PSO, ABC and SVM to process and merge the data. A neural network is then used to classify the data based on these three approaches. Real data on various aspects of cardiac disease are incorporated into the simulation.
Findings
The results of this study suggest that the proposed triple algorithm, using the combination of PSO, ABC and SVM, significantly improves the accuracy of predictions for cardiac disease. By processing and merging data using the triple algorithm, the neural network was able to effectively classify the data. The incorporation of real data on various aspects of cardiac disease in the simulation further enhanced the findings. This research contributes to the existing knowledge on cardiac disease prognosis and highlights the potential of leveraging past data for strategic forecasting in the health-care sector.
Originality/value
The originality of this research lies in the development of the triple algorithm, which combines multiple data mining strategies to improve prognosis accuracy for cardiac diseases. This approach differs from existing methods by using a combination of PSO, ABC, SVM, information gain, genetic algorithms and bacterial foraging optimization with the Gray Wolf Optimizer. The proposed technique offers a novel and valuable contribution to the field, enhancing the competitive position and overall performance of businesses in the health-care sector.

Abstract
Purpose
Growing concern about sustainability, which focuses on the triple bottom line, namely people, planet and profits, must integrate with local culture to ensure inclusive growth. Localized advertising themes adapted to suit a country’s culture borrow from that country’s culture. Global advertising themes, on the other side, influence and modify the existing culture of a nation. The present study looks at the potential of using traditional Indian sustainable themes to promote sustainability as a way of life, which can be used to craft advertising messages that contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Design/methodology/approach
A content analysis of 395 advertisements displayed on Indian television during primetime has been done. Data have been analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Findings
The findings reveal that 4 SDGs (achieve gender equality, ensure affordable and clean energy, ensure good health and well-being and promote industry, innovation and infrastructure) out of a total of 17 SDGs find a place in 395 advertisements. They mostly appear for beauty and personal care products and automotive. Depictions of a frugal lifestyle, natural/green surroundings and women empowerment in advertisements “together” exemplify opportunities to use culture creatively in crafting advertising messages.
Research limitations/implications
As the multinational companies embrace the trends towards globalization in advertising, they can also extend the traditional cultural values and lifestyle from a country like India, which tremendously and conspicuously contribute to sustainability to appeal “differently” to buyers. It would offer an opportunity to synergize the growth outcomes in a thoughtful manner.
Originality/value
This is an original piece of research, as no such study has already been conducted in India (to the best of researchers' knowledge).

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to understand the situation of hotels and tourism industry in Malaysia during and in post Covid-19 and to mitigate indirect damage caused by COVID-19 to the hotel business and tourism industry by examining the factors that have an influence on hotel’s customer satisfaction rating and revisit intention through an integration of service quality (SERVQUAL) framework and expectation-confirmation theory (ECT).
Design/methodology/approach
The SERVQUAL and ECT were considered the underpinning theoretical models but are integrated and extended by including a few additional variables. Data were collected from 458 respondents of travelers and hotel customers in Malaysia and analysed by applying partial least squares structural equation model technique.
Findings
The empirical results established that significant positive relationships exist between the three newly emerged independent variables (IVs), namely, hygienic practice, greenness of service and digitalization and hotel customer satisfaction towards hotel revisit intention, and only two variables from SERVQUAL, namely, reliability and assurance, have a significant relationship with hotel customer satisfaction towards hotel revisit intention. The results reveal that customer satisfaction has significant direct effect between above-mentioned IVs and customers revisit intention.
Research limitations/implications
The use of purposeful sampling method in only one country might limit the generalizability of the results. Future research should be planned to duplicate the current study using a sizable sample of participants from multiple countries and include other related factors related to the pandemic phenomena such as safety, hotel location and health value offered.
Practical implications
Theoretical findings imply that service quality is a dynamic theory that should be examined continuously to achieve sustainable and resilient performance in today’s competitive business environment, as some modifications inevitably occur over time and new factors could be emerged. Regarding practical implications, study findings proved the great significance of assurance, reliability, digitalization, greenness and hygienic practices on customer satisfaction towards intention to revisit to hotel. Therefore, it is critical for hotel management to retain hotel business industry in a way that fits and matches customer’s health protection, meets customer’s newly prompted expectations and needs and ensures resilience during unsettled times.
Originality/value
This study is unique as the newly emerged variables are included in the research framework, and thus it helps to close the literature gap by introducing an integrated SERVQUAL and ECT theoretical model, which rarely performs in this context and can be replicated or extended with validated scales. This study contributes to enhancing hotel and tourism sustainable service quality performance to achieve myriad economic and health values.
