Abstract

Purpose

Based on the values of the students and the work carried out by the university to publicise the sustainable development goals (SDGs), this study aims to analyse how the university can influence the sustainable behaviour of students.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is quantitative research based on a survey of 814 students with a degree in business administration and management. An ad hoc instrument was designed for the study, consisting of 14 values and 13 sustainable behaviours, considering the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, social and environmental. The students answered the survey at two points, at the beginning and end of the semester. Data analysis was based on the SmartPLS structural equation model.

Findings

The results showed that the role of values is more decisive than SDGs knowledge in explaining sustainable behaviour. SDGs knowledge initially has an explanatory role in sustainable behaviour and a mediating role between values and sustainable behaviour. More excellent SDG knowledge does not change sustainable behaviour but it helps students to have a more critical view of their sustainable behaviours.

Practical implications

Practical implications are drawn for designing university actions that reinforce the change in sustainable behaviour to contribute to sustainable development, considering their greater capacity to influence instrumental values.

Originality/value

As far as the authors have been able to investigate, no studies have addressed the research objectives that the authors raise in this paper. The short-term longitudinal analysis allows for the conclusion of the intervention’s impact and effectiveness at the university.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to examine the effects of green internal orientation and external orientation on firm performance and to evaluate the mediating role of green absorptive capacity in this effect. It also investigates the moderating role of environmental culture in the relationship between green absorptive capacity and firm performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was conducted based on field research with surveys conducted on 343 technology-oriented companies operating in Istanbul. SmartPLS 4 statistical software was used to analyze the data.

Findings

Research results show that green internal and external orientation has a positive and significant effect on firm performance. Additionally, green absorptive capacity has a mediating role in this effect. It has been determined that environmental culture plays a moderating role in the relationship between green absorptive capacity and firm performance.

Research limitations/implications

This study has some limitations; for example, the fact that the data was obtained only from technology-focused companies in Istanbul may limit generalizability. However, this research makes important contributions to our understanding of the effects of green internal and external orientation on firm performance and the mediating effect of green absorptive capacity.

Practical implications

This study shows that strengthening businesses’ green internal and external orientations and improving their green absorptive capacity can increase firm performance. It is also an important warning to businesses that environmental culture can play an important role in these relationships.

Social implications

Strengthening green internal and external orientation and improving green absorptive capacity can provide social benefits through their contributions to environmental sustainability. This study can help businesses take steps to reduce their environmental impact and achieve a sustainable future.

Originality/value

This study is one of the few studies examining the effects of green internal and external orientation on firm performance and the mediating role of green absorptive capacity. Additionally, it makes a unique contribution by focusing on the moderating role of environmental culture in these relationships. This study can be a valuable guide for businesses in developing environmental sustainability strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to carry out an analysis of the key factors that influence the performance of tourism observatories, understanding performance as the degree of fulfilment of its objectives.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a qualitative research approach, this study conducted in-depth interviews with 16 international experts from diverse backgrounds and different countries. This was complemented by a thorough literature review to validate experts’ insights.

Findings

Interviews identify 15 success factors supported by literature on evidence-based decision-making from both tourism and other related fields. Results underscore the significance of effective knowledge communication, adopting a user-oriented approach, and proactive stakeholder engagement as the three main factors improving observatory performance.

Research limitations/implications

While the findings offer insights, they are based on expert opinions and may not fully capture the complex, context-specific dynamics of tourism observatories across different destinations. Further research could involve case studies to explore these dynamics contextualised in tourism destinations.

Practical implications

This study offers guidance for both existing and emerging tourism observatories to enhance operational efficiency. Focusing on improving these critical factors could prevent failure, and, conversely, increase the observatorys’ effectiveness and usefulness for destination stakeholders.

Originality/value

The analysis of tourism observatories has not received enough attention in previous tourism literature. This research fills a significant gap in understanding how observatories can better serve as instrumental tools for sustainable tourism management and stakeholders decision-making.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine organizational justice, innovation and 360-degree feedback appraisals. It examines how 360-degree feedback appraisals affect innovative behavior, execution and creative asset use. This paper examines organizational justice (distributive, procedural and interactional) and employee perceptions of 360-degree feedback systems. Finally, this study investigates how procedural and interactional justice mediate the relationship between innovative behavior and 360-degree feedback appraisals.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 200 participants from diverse locations, including Lebanon, Europe, the GCC, North Africa and Australia, spanning various occupations and industries were asked to complete the survey. This sample targeted participants who would be interested in the topic and who were selected from a diverse demographic characteristic. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software was used to analyze the research data.

Findings

This study reveals important connections within organizations. It shows a positive link between using 360-degree feedback appraisals and innovation, including idea generation and implementation. In addition, it confirms that using such feedback is linked to employees' perceptions of fairness. Moreover, it finds a positive connection between innovation and fairness. Finally, it highlights organizational fairness as a key mediator between 360-degree feedback and innovation.

Research limitations/implications

The recent investigations conducted exhibit various limitations that open avenues for prospective research. Initially, a cross-sectional design was used, presenting an opportunity for future research to consider adopting a longitudinal approach. This method could facilitate the collection and analysis of data over time, allowing for a more nuanced exploration of causality. Moreover, this research concentrated solely on a singular component of performance appraisal, namely, 360-degree feedback. To enrich future investigations, researchers are encouraged to encompass other facets of performance appraisal, such as gauging satisfaction with and the efficacy of performance appraisal. Furthermore, potential future studies may delve into exploring the mediating impact of other variables in the relationship between 360-degree feedback and innovative behavior, such as job satisfaction and affective commitment. In addition, the potential role of various moderating variables, including organizational culture, perceived organizational support and structural empowerment, could be investigated in forthcoming studies.

Practical implications

The study's findings carry practical implications for various stakeholders, encompassing employees, managers and policymakers. Managers aiming to foster an innovative culture should meticulously craft a 360-degree evaluation system that recognizes and incentivizes both concrete and intangible manifestations of innovation. The examination conducted in this research suggests a robust correlation between the existence of a 360-degree evaluation and behaviors related to ideation, encompassing idea generation and implementation.

Social implications

To cultivate innovative behavior among employees, managers should empower their workforce, and one effective approach is to enhance employees' perceptions of the quality of performance appraisals. Recognizing employee innovative behavior emerges as a crucial prerequisite for the growth, development and sustainability of organizations, demanding specific attention from both managers and policymakers. In the organizational context, the relationship between innovative behavior and perceptions of organizational justice shows that organizations should aim at fostering an atmosphere that promotes creativity while also ensuring fair treatment and recognition for contributors.

Originality/value

Despite the array of research on the relationship between innovative behavior and 360-degree feedback, this study is the first to examine the mediating effect of organizational justice on the relationship between 360-degree feedback and innovative behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a proprietary indicator to measure the digital presence of the institutions: the digital presence index.

Design/methodology/approach

This research delves into how nonprofit institutions, specifically business interest associations (BIAs), have developed their internet presence by applying essential digital marketing techniques. To this end, and using big data mining tools, this study analyzes the tracking by internet users of 102 BIAs, with their respective websites in 36 countries in Europe and the USA. In addition, the presence and activity of the institutions included in this study on social networks are considered.

Findings

This research serves as a basis for discussing the current gap between social reality and the digitalization of institutions. In this sense, conclusions are drawn on the importance of managerial profiles in decision-making on digitization and the necessary knowledge that, together with Web and social network managers, they must have to articulate the means and techniques that promote the internet presence of the organizations they manage.

Originality/value

Conclusions are drawn according to the geographical scope of the BIAs, and an argument is made about the difficulties of connection and loss of prominence of this type of institutions among their different target audiences, especially among the youngest and most digitized.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine two questions that contribute to understanding the organizational corporate governance forms of the so-called New World: What have been the social and cultural forces that gave rise to the institutional features of the Anglo-Saxon corporate states and the Hispanic patrimonial states? And how have these traits influenced the governance forms of North American and Latin American firms?

Design/methodology/approach

A comparative historical analysis methodology that dates back to the colonial foundations of the New World was used. Analysis categories were derived to allow us to reflect on the phenomenon studied and support the hypotheses while deriving observations that explain the historical relationships of the state types and their capitalisms with contemporary corporate governance. The research also considered case analysis in context, presented as specific empirical evidence.

Findings

The paper maintains that the historical social and cultural forces that were configured in the New World shaped the institutional features of the Anglo-Saxon corporate states with liberal capitalism and the Hispanic patrimonial states with hierarchical capitalism, and that these features are related to the predominant organizational corporate governance forms in North American and Latin American firms, respectively.

Originality/value

This paper provides insights into the social, cultural and institutional factors that gave rise to corporate and patrimonial states and their relationships with the different types of organizational corporate governance. It introduces a categorization into the literature with three types of organizational corporate governance (e.g. corporatist, patrimonial and hybrid). This allows progress in linking corporate governance theories with a managerial focus and governance perspectives oriented to economic and social development.

Abstract

Purpose

Sedentary living and respiratory/cardiovascular diseases affect respiratory and peripheral muscles. Muscle training can prevent, improve and reverse these changes. Their research question suggests that precise nutraceutical administration can enhance antioxidant capacity and muscle function. This sudy aims to evaluate the impacto of an innovative nutraceutical on blood biomarkers such as essential aminoacids, antioxidants, lipid profile, and REDOX status in healthy individuals, stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients, and mechanically ventilated patients.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors designed a nutraceutical to assess its effects on serum amino acids, lipid profile, vitamins, minerals and reduction-oxidation function. Conducted at a high-complexity care hospital, a study with a non-equivalent group design compared pre- and post-treatment administration.

Findings

The 29 participants were categorized into healthy individuals (n = 10), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients (n = 10) and COPD patients receiving mechanical ventilation in an intensive care unit (ICU, n = 9) due to exacerbation. Analyzing serum values of selected markers and components before and after nutraceutical intake revealed significant differences. Oxygen radical absorption capacity units significantly increased (p = 0.0051) in healthy individuals. Isoleucine, valine, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium levels significantly increased in the healthy group.

Research limitations/implications

The small sample size and short duration limit the generalizability of results. The non-equivalent group design and lack of randomization may introduce bias, affecting reliability. Future research should involve larger, randomized controlled trials to confirm HIC1® benefits. Additionally, exploring long-term effects and optimal dosing in various populations, including different COPD stages and other chronic conditions, will provide more comprehensive insights. Despite these limitations, the study suggests promising implications for enhancing muscle function and antioxidant capacity through precise nutraceutical administration.

Practical implications

The administration of HIC1® demonstrates potential for improving antioxidant capacity and muscle function, particularly in sedentary individuals and those with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases. This study’s findings suggest that even short-term use of HIC1® can lead to significant increases in serum amino acids and other vital nutrients. Health practitioners should consider incorporating nutraceuticals like HIC1® into treatment plans for COPD patients and those requiring mechanical ventilation. Future research and clinical practice should explore optimal dosing and long-term benefits, potentially improving patient outcomes in chronic disease management.

Social implications

The use of nutraceuticals like HIC1® could have a significant impact on public health, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. Improving muscle function and antioxidant capacity can reduce dependence on intensive care, decrease the economic burden on healthcare systems and enhance patients’ quality of life. Additionally, access to effective nutraceutical treatments could democratize healthcare, providing an affordable complementary option for preventing and managing muscle and respiratory diseases, promoting healthy and active aging in society.

Originality/value

This study is pioneering in evaluating the effects of a specifically designed nutraceutical, HIC1®, on both healthy individuals and those with chronic respiratory conditions. By focusing on precise nutraceutical administration, it addresses the gap in research on non-pharmaceutical interventions for enhancing muscle function and antioxidant capacity. The findings provide valuable insights into the potential of HIC1® to improve clinical outcomes in COPD patients and those undergoing intensive care, offering a novel, natural and potentially cost-effective approach to complement traditional treatments and support overall health and well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the application of the National Expert Survey (NES) methodology in the circular economy, validating the model in the industrial ecosystem of the Basque Country to identify the challenges faced by the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the machine tool industry and to promote circular entrepreneurship.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the NES methodology, a globally recognized qualitative tool for gathering expert opinions. This methodology is adapted to the context of industrial circular entrepreneurship, ensuring that the constructs are relevant to the circular economy.

Findings

This study validates and expands the application of the NES model in the context of industrial circular entrepreneurship, providing a robust theoretical framework to evaluate the circular entrepreneurial ecosystem. The suitability of the Basque Country context, with its industrial legacy and cultural identity, has been key to this validation.

Practical implications

Concrete recommendations are provided to improve education, government intervention and financial conditions, highlighting key areas that facilitate the transition to sustainable business models and promote innovation and collaboration in the circular economy.

Originality/value

A new model is proposed, pioneering the validation of the NES methodology in industrial circular entrepreneurship and providing a specific tool to evaluate environmental factors in the Basque industry. The adaptation of the NES model offers a solid foundation for future research and applications. The model aids in decision-making, and its use has a social impact.

Este artículo explora la aplicación de la metodología NES en la economía circular, validando el modelo en el ecosistema industrial del País Vasco para identificar los desafíos que enfrenta el ecosistema emprendedor en la industria de la máquina herramienta y propone un modelo original para medir y promover el emprendimiento circular industrial. El modelo ha sido validado en el ecosistema industrial vasco, un contexto de referencia para la actividad y política industrial. Útil para la industria, la política y el ámbito académico, el modelo identifica factores favorables y áreas que requieren atención en el emprendimiento circular industrial.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

El estudio utiliza la metodología NES, una herramienta cualitativa reconocida a nivel mundial para recopilar opiniones de expertos. Esta metodología se adapta al contexto del emprendimiento circular industrial, asegurando que los constructos sean relevantes para la economía circular. La metodología es clave para el estudio, ya que se ha diseñado una herramienta original basada en la metodología NES, ampliamente probada y validada, y específicamente adaptada para el emprendimiento circular industrial.

Resultados

El estudio valida y amplía la aplicación del modelo NES en el contexto del emprendimiento circular industrial, proporcionando un marco teórico robusto para evaluar el ecosistema emprendedor circular. La idoneidad del contexto del País Vasco, con su legado industrial e identidad cultural, ha sido clave para esta validación. Al abordar la notable falta de investigación sobre la economía circular desde la perspectiva del emprendimiento industrial, este artículo se presenta como una contribución particularmente valiosa.

Se propone un nuevo modelo, pionero en la validación de la metodología NES en el emprendimiento circular industrial, proporcionando una herramienta específica para evaluar factores ambientales en la industria vasca. Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess volatility spillovers and directional connectedness between electricity (EPs) and natural gas prices (GPs) in the Canadian electricity market, based on a hydrothermal power generation market strongly dependent on exogenous variables such as fossil fuel prices and climatology factors.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is divided into two stages. First, a quantile vector autoregression model is used to evaluate the direction and magnitude of the influence between natural gas and electricity prices through different quantiles of their distributions. Second, a cross-quantilogram is estimated to measure the directional predictability between these prices. The data set consists of daily electricity and natural gas prices between January 2015 and December 2023.

Findings

The main finding shows that electricity prices are pure shock receivers of volatility from natural gas prices for the different quantiles. In this way, natural gas price fluctuations explain 0.20%, 0.98% and 22.72% of electricity price volatility for the 10th, 50th and 90th quantiles, respectively. On the other hand, a significant and positive correlation is observed in the high quantiles of the electricity prices for any natural gas price value.

Originality/value

The study described the risk to the electricity market caused by nonrenewable source price fluctuations and provided evidence for designing regulatory policies to reduce its exposure in Alberta, Canada. It also allows us to understand the importance of natural gas in the energy transition process and define it as the fundamental determinant of the electricity market dynamic.

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid growth of 3D printing has transformed the cost-effective production of prototypes and functional items, primarily using extrusion technology with thermoplastics. This study aims to focus on optimizing mechanical properties, precisely highlighting the crucial role of mechanical compressive strength in ensuring the functionality and durability of 3D-printed components, especially in industrial and engineering applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the Box−Behnken experimental design, the research investigated the influence of layer thickness, wall perimeter and infill level on mechanical resistance through compression. Parameters such as maximum force, printing time and mass utilization are considered for assessing and enhancing mechanical properties.

Findings

The layer thickness was identified as the most influential parameter over the compression time, followed by the degree of infill. The number of surface layers significantly influences both maximum strength and total mass. Optimization strategies suggest reducing infill percentage while maintaining moderate to high values for surface layers and layer thickness, enabling the production of lightweight components with adequate mechanical strength and reduced printing time. Experimental validation confirms the effectiveness of these strategies, with generated regression equations serving as a valuable predictive tool for similar parameters.

Practical implications

This research offers valuable insights for industries using 3D printing in creating prototypes and functional parts. By identifying optimal parameters such as layer thickness, surface layers and infill levels, the study helps manufacturers achieve stronger, lighter and more cost-efficient components. For industrial and engineering applications, adopting the outlined optimization strategies can result in components with enhanced mechanical strength and durability, while also reducing material costs and printing times. Practitioners can use the developed regression equations as predictive tools to fine-tune their production processes and achieve desired mechanical properties more effectively.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the ongoing evolution of additive manufacturing, providing insights into optimizing structural rigidity through polylactic acid (PLA) selection, Box−Behnken design and overall process optimization. These findings advance the understanding of fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology and offer practical implications for more efficient and economical 3D printing processes in industrial and engineering applications.
