Abstract

Although adaptation to climate change is a well-researched topic at the individual level and in highly vulnerable industries, its integration into business strategies is poorly researched. In this chapter, we conduct bibliometric analyses on a sample of 368 relevant papers published in business journals to derive descriptive statistics and map the conceptual and intellectual structure of the field. We find an increased interest in adaptation and confirm a strong representation of industry-specific research. We complement the bibliometric analyses with a content analysis focused on emergent themes in the adaptation scholarship. We discuss systemic influences, individual effects, regulations and stakeholders, and exposure as areas likely to attract further scrutiny in future scholarship. For each theme, we derive practical implications for practitioners and policymakers.

Abstract

Purpose

This is the application of the Entropy and TOPSIS model to assess the eco-efficiency of European financial institutions using environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies. The aim is to categorize financial institutions based on key factors such as environmental training and management and to examine the alignment between ideal ESG performance and eco-efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies to identify and categorize eco-entrepreneurs in European financial institutions. The study utilizes data to examine the structure between environmental training, effective management practices, and the green performance of financial institutions.

Findings

The study shows that European financial institutions exhibit varying degrees of eco-efficiency as assessed using the Entropy and TOPSIS model applied to ESG strategies. Surprisingly, the study found that institutions with a high ESG performance do not always match those with the highest eco-efficiency.

Research limitations/implications

They emphasize the need for financial institutions to align their operations with sustainable practices. This research provides insights to increase eco-efficiency and improve the ESG performance of financial institutions. It also informs policy and decision-making in these institutions in relation to environmental training and management practices, contributing to the wider dialogue on sustainable finance.

Originality/value

This indicates a discrepancy between ESG ratings and actual eco-efficiency, emphasizing the need to reassess the ESG framework. The study findings are crucial for aligning financial institutions with sustainable practices and improving the effectiveness of the ESG framework, especially for institutions at the lower end of the eco-efficiency spectrum.

Abstract

This research utilizes the Panel FMOLS (fully modified ordinary least square) and DOLS (dynamic ordinary least square) techniques to analyze the influence of tourism on the level of female employment across several sectors, including agriculture, services and industry, in Central Asia (CA) nations from 2000 to 2021. It finds a significant positive correlation between economic development, trade openness and female employment. Conversely, the increase in tourist arrivals and the urbanization process have a positive and statistically significant effect on the unemployment rate. Based on the findings of the sectoral study, it can be seen that tourism has a statistically significant positive influence on the level of women's work within the service and industrial sectors. Conversely, the association between tourism and women's employment in the agriculture sector demonstrates a statistically adverse effect. The study's results suggest that authorities should prioritize implementing initiatives aimed at enhancing tourism throughout the countries in CA.

The retail industry is undergoing a significant digital revolution. The primary purpose of the research is to recognise the concept of retail along with its service applications and novel technologies that will drive the future around the world. Retailers must keep up with the latest technological advancements to remain competitive as the supply chain grows more intricate and consumers become more astute, tech-savvy, and gadget-literate about using multiple channels. The analysis indicates technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), smart labelling, beacons, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), drone deliveries, and Internet of Things (IoT) have emerged as future trends. It has been found that retailers need to have strong digital relationships to engage and interact with consumers as well as to mould and influence experiences. They can create connections to assist customers in making decisions that are beneficial to them. India’s retail industry is well-positioned to prosper in the dynamic market environment by adopting innovation and transformation and also centred on omnichannel tactics, which offer customers a seamless experience by giving them a comprehensive, single glance at each retail business from the comfort of their home or place of business. While corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been gaining support for the role it plays in employee outcomes, such as organizational identification (OID), the view of CSR from a social identity perspective is underdeveloped. This conceptual chapter explores the role of social identity processes grounded in organizational justice to develop a model of CSR attributions and the moderating role these attributions play in organizational member outcomes. CSR is understood as the relational processes happening with stakeholders, and these relationships engage specific organizational identity orientations. The social identity process flows from there, resulting in CSR attributions including strategic, relational, and virtuous. Using social identity, organizational identity, and organizational justice, this chapter makes two specific contributions: a CSR attribution typology grounded in organizational justice and the moderating impact of these attributions between activated justice dimensions and resulting organizational member outcomes.

Financial communication refers to the strategies and practices employed by companies to share financial information and engage with investors, stakeholders and the broader financial community. At its core lies investor relations management (IRM), focused on achieving effective two-way communication between the company and these groups for fair valuation of securities. Key financial communication activities include investor meetings, earnings calls, roadshows, annual reports, market analysis and crisis communication. Moreover. stakeholder theory emphasizes identifying and managing relationships with all individuals and entities that can affect or be affected by the company's operations. Stakeholders include shareholders, employees, creditors, suppliers, communities, regulators etc., classified as primary (essential) or secondary (indirectly involved). Proactive stakeholder engagement is crucial for achieving corporate objectives. Additionally, investor relations (IR) specifically deal with managing interactions with shareholders, creditors and potential investors through information dissemination, utilizing finance, marketing and communication techniques. Implementation channels include regulated disclosures, shareholder meetings, media engagement and forums. Other covered aspects include crisis communication strategies, corporate reputation management, internal communication practices, transparency and disclosure guidelines and legal/ethical considerations surrounding corporate communication. Abstract

This chapter explores a practical way of realising Africa’s creative and cultural industries (CCIs) potential as a new frontier for development. It answers the question of how can young African creatives be nurtured to build creative enterprises? Using insights from extant literature identifying some of the key contextual challenges, we developed and deployed a prototype innovative platform called the ‘Creative Village’ to address these challenges in a practical way at one of Africa’s biggest Music reality TV shows in Nigeria. A qualitative multistakeholder data collection approach called the Ecosystem Insights Approach (EIA) was adopted to explore these challenges and the appropriateness of the proposed Creative Village solution.

Findings identify some key constraints that creatives face such as weak structures and infrastructure, weak artist education, low levels of investment, and the underdevelopment of the music value chain. We conclude that the creative entrepreneurship framework called the ‘Creative Village’ and its key features is a viable way of jumpstarting and catalysing the already vibrant yet under-tapped CCI in Africa, but this platform must be built on five philosophical pillars: An inclusive platform for individual talents regardless of their gender, location or disability to find expression; developing a holistic, professional creative entrepreneur who understands their craft and the business of their craft; creating a platform that allows for different dimensions of authenticity to thrive; a platform that unifies different players in the Nigeria music ecosystem through the right partnerships; a platform that enhances local markets and connects musicians to regional and international market.

Abstract

Purpose

Housing First (HF) is an evidence-based practice effective in reducing homelessness among those who experience chronic homelessness. However, a strong synthesis evaluating the effectiveness of this intervention is lacking for people who use drugs. The purpose of this study is to explore international literature databases to identify the effectiveness of the HF programme among people who use drugs.

Design/methodology/approach

A modified framework from Arksey and O’Malley (2005) was used, namely: identifying the research question; developing inclusion and exclusion criteria; identifying relevant studies for study selection; charting the data; and collating, summarising and reporting the results.

Findings

Three main themes were identified: substance use related outcomes, housing-related outcomes and social outcomes. There is strong evidence that HF increases housing retention and reduces homelessness among chronically homeless people who use drugs. However, literature relating to substance use and social outcomes for this population report mixed and inconclusive findings.

Research limitations/implications

This scoping review concludes that additional research is required to conclusively determine whether HF is an effective intervention for homeless substance users. Future researchers must use formal assessments of substance use and ensure clear reporting of the HF intervention is accomplished. It is recommended for researchers and policymakers to consider the specific needs of the people who use drugs before implementation of HF for this population.

Practical implications

Differential effectiveness of HF through diagnostic subgroups such as alcohol use and drug use is varied with alcohol use being found to decrease due to the HF programme, but findings relating to other drug use outcomes are varied. As most previous studies used the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) to measure substance use among participants, however, the ASI, a self-reporting measure has unstable criterion validity and can cause under or over reporting of substance use. Structured toxicology or diagnostic assessments of substance use must be used for research instead to assist researchers in making firm conclusions about the reported rates.

Social implications

The slightly poorer housing outcomes among people who use substances indicate that this group may need more intensive approaches to finding and maintaining housing. Additional services for the group that address comorbid problems and consequences relating to substance use are required. It is suggested that housing should be provided within an integrated model that offers additional support services such as case management as when well matched to clients, case management appears to be an effective intervention among homeless sub-populations, as it reduces substance use, improves quality of life and health outcomes, improves social connectedness and increases housing tenure and satisfaction.

Originality/value

This scoping review concludes that additional research is required to conclusively determine whether HF is an effective intervention for homeless substance users. Future researchers must use formal assessments of substance use and ensure clear reporting of the HF intervention is accomplished. It is recommended for researchers and policymakers to consider the specific needs of the people who use drugs before HF implementation for this population.

Multinational enterprises (MNEs) own and control technological resources and capabilities that make them critical actors in accelerating the transition toward net zero. Even beyond the energy sector, stakeholders are putting increasing pressure on MNEs to reduce the carbon intensity of their operations, that is, to improve their carbon performance. While there is unambiguous evidence that national climate policy is a critical catalyst for long-term carbon performance improvements, there is limited research on how MNEs’ carbon strategies react to climate policies. This chapter reviews the concepts, drivers, and strategies connected to carbon performance in the broader sustainability and management literature to clarify potential complementarities to international business (IB). The authors then highlight how MNEs will face increasing institutional complexity along two dimensions: (1) the structural diversity of institutional environments and (2) institutional dynamism, primarily reflected by public policy. The proposed conceptual framework maps these two dimensions to national and subnational levels, and the authors present two data sources that allow the quantitative analysis of country differences in the diversity and dynamism of national climate policy. The authors conclude that there are ample opportunities for IB researchers to explore MNEs’ strategic reactions to climate policy and to inform policymakers about the consequences of national climate policy in the global economy.
