Abstract
Purpose
This paper compares how the two interacting themes of “Whistleblowing” or “Speaking Up” and the duty of candour (DoC), which are both concerned with safety and quality improvement in health care, got onto the agenda of the British National Health Service (NHS).
Design/methodology/approach
It uses the approach of multiple streams and the methodology of interpretive content analysis in a deductive approach that focusses on both manifest and latent content. It examines official documents that discuss the DoC or whistleblowing or cognate terms in connection with the British NHS from 1999 to 2019.
Findings
The main conceptual finding, which mirrors many previous studies, is that it seems difficult to operationalise many of the sub-components of the multiple streams approach. The main empirical finding points to the “focusing event” of the Francis Report into the Mid Staffordshire Trust of 2013 and the importance of its Chair, Sir Robert Francis, as a policy entrepreneur.
Originality/value
This is one of the first studies to focus on both issues of whistleblowing and the DoC and the first to compare them through the lens of the multiple streams approach. It has two main conceptual advantages over most previous studies in the field: it compares whistleblowing and the duty of candour rather than the dominant approach of a single case study and explores the different outcomes of failed as well as successful couplings of the streams.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to follow a rigorous approach to identify, critically analyze and synthesize 75 papers published from 2000 to 2022.
Design/methodology/approach
The study presents a systematic literature review on identity expressiveness (IE), clarifying and expanding what is currently known about the concept.
Findings
To synthesize current knowledge on IE, the study uses the overarching framework of antecedents-phenomenon-consequences, using this same framework to identify gaps and future research directions. The findings show individual and brand-related factors such as the need for uniqueness and anthropomorphism as antecedents of IE, and eWOM/WOM, impulse purchases and upgrading to more exclusive lines as consequences of IE.
Research limitations/implications
The study contributes to theory by synthesizing and mapping current understanding of the state of knowledge on the concept of IE while highlighting gaps in the extant literature and paving future research directions for scholars in the field.
Practical implications
The study offers useful insights for practitioners, broadening marketers’ actionable options in identity-based marketing. Marketers can use insights from this study to inform marketing strategy and communication campaigns for different types of brands.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first of its kind and offers an integrative review of the current literature on IE, thus enhancing understanding of the concept, its antecedents and consequences. The study also contributes to knowledge by highlighting future research priorities for researchers in this field of enquiry.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the effect of stock repurchase – firms buying back their own stocks – on firm performance, focusing specifically on the role of marketing capability. The authors also investigate the moderating influence of competitive intensity on this effect. This research sheds light on how marketing capability explains the negative effect of stock repurchase on firm performance, and how this effect varies in different competitive intensity environments.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors test their hypotheses using US firm-level longitudinal data collected from a sample set of firms obtained from the Compustat database for the 1989–2015 period. The authors specify a panel data regression model to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The authors find that adoption of stock repurchase ultimately results in a decrease in firm performance, through a decrease in marketing capability. The authors also find that the indirect effect of stock repurchase on firm performance is moderated by firm competitive intensity, such that at higher levels of competitive intensity, the negative relationship between stock repurchase and marketing capability will become amplified and at lower levels of competitive intensity, the negative relationship between stock repurchase and marketing capability will get attenuated.
Research limitations/implications
This study indicates that the risk from stock repurchase is the diversion of funds from other beneficial activities such as marketing budgets, leading to lowered marketing capability.
Practical implications
This study's results will help managers improve their understanding of the dark side of the stock repurchase strategy and help take corrective action.
Originality/value
The present study empirically tests the effects of stock repurchase on marketing capability and firm performance.

Abstract
Purpose
Artificial intelligence (AI) is experiencing growth and prosperity worldwide because of its convenience and other benefits. However, AI faces challenges related to consumer resistance. Thus, drawing on the user resistance theory, this study explores factors that influence consumers’ resistance to AI and suggests ways to mitigate this negative influence.
Design/methodology/approach
This study tested four hypotheses across four studies by conducting lab experiments. Study 1 used a questionnaire to verify the hypothesis that AI’s “substitute” image leads to consumer resistance to AI; Study 2 focused on the role of perceived threat as an underlying driver of resistance to AI. Studies 3–4 provided process evidence by the way of a measured moderator, testing whether AI with servant communication style and literal language style is resisted less.
Findings
This study showed that AI’s “substitute” image increased users' resistance to AI. This occurs because the substitute image increases consumers’ perceived threat. The study also found that using servant communication and literal language styles in the interaction between AI and consumers can mitigate the negative effects of AI-substituted images.
Originality/value
This study reveals the mechanism of action between AI image and consumers’ resistance and sheds light on how to choose appropriate image and expression styles for AI products, which is important for lowering consumer resistance to AI.
