Abstract

Learning outcomes

After completion of this case study, students will be able to understand about characteristics of urban poor in the city of Mumbai which will aid in understanding about other emerging markets as well, to apply Health Belief Model to help students analyse behaviour change model, to apply social marketing strategies to popularize a social marketing cause, to learn about non-traditional intermediaries and apply to promote a social marketing cause, to apply Ansoff matrix and evaluate various strategies for growth and to analyse various challenges faced by social entrepreneurs and enable learners to arrive at solutions (applicable for social entrepreneurs and marketing executives).

Case overview/synopsis

This case study looked at a Mumbai-based organization, Medow Brite Enterprises, which sold sanitary napkins under the brand FeelOn to women particularly from urban poor background. The protagonist Mrs Ameeta Neel Ramesh was at the helm of the organization and was stuck with a dilemma ā€“ whether to enter rural markets or focus on selling incinerators and aid in disposing used sanitary napkins which was adding to the volume of non-biodegradable waste in the city. In 2019, Ameeta made her first investment in Medow Brite. The organization had seen turbulent times during COVID-19 outbreak. However, Ameeta with her astute strategy, helped the company get back on its feet. Medow Brite instead of manufacturing started procuring quality sanitary napkins from specific vendors. In contrast to many other sanitary napkins available in the market, FeelOn had cotton sanitary napkin variant without presence of plastic in the pads. Ameeta had taken a different route for sale of her sanitary napkin, she conducted awareness sessions with the help of non-governmental organizations in various locations of Mumbai as well as Maharashtra. Post these sessions she sold her sanitary napkins among the attendees of the awareness sessions.

Complexity academic level

The case study can be included in marketing management course, consumer behaviour as well as social marketing courses in both undergraduate level and postgraduate level. In addition, the case study is also suitable for social entrepreneurs and marketing executives to discuss about non-traditional sales and marketing approaches, identifying unique segments and understanding behaviour change theories.

Abstract

Since 2018, millions of students have mobilised as organisers, advocates and activists for action on global warming in movements like the School Strike 4 Climate. In Australia, an estimated 500,000 school students, some as young as five, and predominantly girls and young women, have taken part in coordinated school strikes, protest actions online and in cities and towns around the country (Hilder & Collin, 2022). While children and young people have long been central to politics, this more recent mass mobilisation raises new questions about how the various new forms of political participation and expression adopted by young people are significantly reshaping political norms, values and practices in ostensibly liberal democratic regimes like Australia. In this chapter, we propose that close attention be given to whether young peopleā€™s political views and demands for political recognition, rights and climate justice is re-constituting politics and whatever passes for ā€˜democracyā€™ in contemporary societies. Drawing on a study of the student climate movement in Australia, this chapter briefly describes the emergence of the movement globally and locally. Deploying Isinā€™s notion of ā€˜acts of citizenshipā€™ (Isin, 2008), we examine the ways young climate activists are engaged in critical, performative, political practice, making claims for political recognition, rights and climate justice.

Abstract

Past research has shown there is a relationship between body image, sexual behavior, and pleasure. However, the majority of this research has centered on heterosexual participants. In this analysis, the author considers how this relationship between body image, sexual behavior, and pleasure may look within women and genderqueer individuals who are all AFAB (assigned female at birth) with 26 out of 30 participants identifying as LGBTQIA+. The author examines perceptions of body size, body hair, and genitals to consider how intersections of social structures ā€“ specifically internalized sexism, racism, and misogyny ā€“ influence the participantsā€™ experience of sexual interactions. Both resistance and embodiment of traditional gender norms, even as queer women and genderqueer individuals, were examined in these narratives. The majority of the moments where traditional gender norms are examined describe situations when the participants were sexually interacting with cis-gendered men.

In this chapter, the authors argue that technology can be advantageous to children and young peopleā€™s mental health. The authors argue that social media platforms can foster social connection, social support and access to important information to support mental health. The authors also highlight the risks, particularly the research which links technology to mental ill-health. The authors argue that the digital curriculum in schools should develop young peopleā€™s knowledge of digital literacy, digital citizenship and digital resilience. Finally, the authors explore the potential role that technological applications (apps) can play in supporting children and young peopleā€™s mental health. The authors argue that although research is in its infancy, some studies have produced promising results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of a collaboratively designed digital road safety intervention on a sample of young drivers and their self-reported traffic offending behaviours before and after the digital intervention.

Design/methodology/approach

This research involved surveying young drivers who shared their driving behaviours and views of police legitimacy through both in-person and online surveys. Analytical methods, including descriptives and hierarchical regressions, were used to examine the differences between participants who received the intervention versus those in a control group. Participants were also separated based on their involvement in a police-led road safety program before the intervention.

Findings

The findings of this study indicated that young drivers who received the intervention showed no improvements in their reported offending behaviour immediately following or three months following the delivery of the intervention. However, views of police legitimacy were a significant predictor and correlated with the reported offending behaviour among young drivers.

Practical implications

This study provides critical insights for policymakers and road safety educators by demonstrating the potential and limitations of digital interventions in altering young driversā€™ behaviours. The findings suggest that while digital platforms can effectively communicate road safety messages, traditional face-to-face methods like the Life Awareness Workshop program may be more impactful in changing behaviours. Policymakers should consider integrating digital interventions with conventional programs to enhance their effectiveness. Additionally, fostering positive views of police legitimacy can be a crucial strategy in encouraging compliance with road rules among young drivers, thereby improving overall road safety.

Originality/value

This research indicates that while the co-design intervention proved promising to ensure that an evidence-based road safety message would be delivered to young drivers in an appropriate manner, in this case, that did not lead to any significant changes in driver behaviour. These results highlight the difficulty in reaching young drivers to affect a behaviour change digitally and indicate that further research is required.

Currently, transition-age youth on the autism spectrum face a loss of access to services. They are at risk for a number of difficulties, including reduced meaningful relationships, internalizing and externalizing problems, and problems with adaptive skills. In the United States, young adults are expected to either attend postsecondary education and/or pursue gainful employment. However, neurodivergent individuals face barriers and often have difficulties meeting these societal expectations. The following chapter will highlight ways that employers and entrepreneurs can support neurodivergent individuals, including meaningful accommodations and inclusive practices.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital platforms increase their function and scope by leveraging boundary resources and complementary add-on products from third-party developers to interact with external entities and producers. Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are essential boundary resources developers use to connect applications, systems and platforms. This notwithstanding, previous API studies tend to focus more on the technical dimensions, with little on the social and cultural contexts underpinning API innovations. This study relies on the new (neo) institutional theory (focusing on regulative, normative and cultural-cognitive pillars) as an analytical lens to understand the institutional forces that affect API integration among digital firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts a qualitative case study methodology and relies on phone calls and a semi-structured in-depth interview approach of a Ghanaian digital music platform to uncover the institutional forces affecting API integration.

Findings

The findings reveal that regulative institutions such as excessive tax regimes mostly constrained API development and integration initiatives. However, other regulative institutions like the government digitalization agenda enabled API integration. Normative institutions, such as the growing use of e-payment options, enabled API integration in digital music platforms. Cultural-cognitive institutions like employee ego constrained the API integration process in music digital platforms.

Originality/value

This study primarily contributes to deepeningĀ understanding of the relevant literature by exploring the institutional forces that affect API integration among digital firms in a developing economy. The study also uncovered a new form of an institution known as motivational institution as an enabler for API development and integration in digital music platforms.

Abstract

In educational settings, intersectional factors such as neurodiversity, structural inequalities and social isolation have resulted in additional complexity in meeting young peopleā€™s mental health needs. The specific phenomenon of voice-hearing can be linked to these complexities and stigma has been shown to further marginalise young people following disclosure. Educational staff report a lack of confidence and specialist training in this area. This chapter outlines the current understanding around the experience of voice-hearing and identifies examples of good practice by considering the lived experiences of individuals that have made a disclosure of this nature in school. Barriers to disclosure and what was helpful about the experience are discussed. Developing a trauma-informed ethos and compassion-focussed principles are highlighted as whole-setting approaches to support and benefit both young people with these presentations and education staff. Recommendations of relevant organisations and training initiatives in schools are provided with guidance on developing and implementing best practices.
