Abstract

Purpose

This study focused on exploring the performance factors (PFs) that impact Infrastructure Sanitation Projects (ISSPs) in the construction sector. The aim was twofold: firstly, to identify these crucial PFs and secondly, to develop a robust performance model capable of effectively measuring and assessing the intricate interdependencies and correlations within ISSPs. By achieving these objectives, the study aimed to provide valuable insights into and tools for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of sanitation projects in the construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the study's aim, the methodology for identifying the PFs for ISSPs involved several steps: extensive literature review, interviews with Egyptian industry experts, a questionnaire survey targeting industry practitioners and an analysis using the Relative Importance Index (RII), Pareto principle and analytic network process (ANP). The RII ranked factor importance,  and Pareto identified the top 20% for ANP, which determined connections and interdependencies among these factors.

Findings

The literature review identified 36 PFs, and an additional 13 were uncovered during interviews. The highest-ranked PF is PF5, while PF19 is the lowest-ranked. Pareto principle selected 11 PFs, representing the top 20% of factors. The ANP model produced an application for measuring ISSP effectiveness, validated through two case studies. Application results were 92.25% and 91.48%, compared to actual results of 95.77% and 97.37%, indicating its effectiveness and accuracy, respectively.

Originality/value

This study addresses a significant knowledge gap by identifying the critical PFs that influence ISSPs within the construction industry. Subsequently, it constructs a novel performance model, resulting in the development of a practical computer application aimed at measuring and evaluating the performance of these projects.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to showcase the significant achievements of Egypt's scientists in the 20th century across various fields of study such as medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, math, geology, astronomy and engineering. The paper highlights the struggles and successes of these scientists, as well as the cultural, social and political factors that influenced their lives and work. The aim is to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and make their own contributions to society by presenting these scientists as role models for hard work and dedication. Ultimately, the paper seeks to promote the importance of science and its impact on society.

Design/methodology/approach

The purpose of this review is to present the scientific biographies of Egypt's most distinguished scientists, primarily in the field of Natural Sciences, in a balanced and comprehensive manner. The work is objective, honest and abstract, avoiding any bias or exaggeration. The author provides a clear and concise methodology, including a brief introduction to the scientist and their field of study, an explanation of their major contributions, the impact of their work on society, any challenges or obstacles faced during their career and their lasting legacy. The aim is to showcase the important achievements of these scientists, their impact on their respective fields and to inspire future generations to pursue scientific careers.

Findings

The group of outstanding scientists in 20th century Egypt were shaped by various factors, including familial upbringing, education, society, political and cultural atmosphere and state support for scientific research. These scientists made significant contributions to various academic disciplines, including medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and engineering. Their impact on their communities and cultures has received international acclaim, making them role models for future generations of scientists and researchers. The history of these scientists highlights the importance of educational investments and supporting scientific research to foster innovation and social progress. The encyclopedia serves as a useful tool for students, instructors and education professionals, preserving Egypt's scientific heritage and honouring the scientists' outstanding accomplishments.

Research limitations/implications

The encyclopedia preserves Egypt's scientific heritage, which has been overlooked for political or other reasons. It is a useful tool for a variety of readers, including students, instructors and education professionals, and it offers insights into universally relevant scientific success factors as well as scientific research methodologies. The encyclopedia honours the outstanding scientific accomplishments of Egyptian researchers and their contributions to the world's scientific community.

Practical implications

The practical implications of this paper are several. Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the tower crane safety factors (TCSFs) that influence tower crane safe operations (TCSOs) in modular integrated construction (MiC). It evaluates how the adoption of these factors contributes to achieving TCSOs and promoting sustainable practices (SPs) within MiC.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve this aim, the study employed a systematic search to ensure a comprehensive collection of variables. Additionally, it conducted a questionnaire survey involving professionals and utilized a brainstorming technique to categorize the different variables. Finally, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to test the relationship between TCSOs and SPs.

Findings

The results of measurement models indicated strong convergent and discriminant validity, with each observed variable correlating well with its latent variable. Moreover, a significant positive correlation between TCSOs and SPs was evidenced by a path coefficient (β = 0.755) and a p-value of <0.05. Lastly, the structural model revealed that the independent variables strongly influence the dependent variable (i.e. SPs) by 57%, underscoring safety's pivotal role in advancing sustainability within MiC projects. These findings provide empirical evidence that improving tower crane safety can directly enhance sustainable practices, offering a dual benefit of increased safety and sustainability for the construction sector.

Originality/value

This study makes a unique and previously undiscovered contribution to the field by identifying the TCSFs in MiC and employing a novel approach by utilizing PLS-SEM to create a unique mathematical model. It offers valuable insights into the relationship between TCSFs, TCSOs and SPs, thus contributing to methodological advancements within Safety Science and providing a foundation for future research and practical implementation in the construction industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Heritage buildings are a witness to previous civilizations and constitute important elements in transmitting cultural identity through generations. In 1938, Alexandria University was established; it was called the University of Farouk at the time. In 1952, the university was named “Alexandria University,” and since then, it has witnessed growth and expansion in several fields. The research aims to preserve the heritage of this academic institution. It seeks to document this wealth of buildings that tell the story of the second-earliest university in Egypt.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-method approach was employed. A descriptive method was used to narrate the history of the university and the importance of its buildings. Within the quantitative approach, a questionnaire was chosen as the survey instrument for collecting the data within the research case study. The aim was to determine the awareness of students, staff and employees of the heritage importance of their faculty. Within the qualitative approach, several interviews were conducted with employees in the engineering departments of the university administrative building at Chatby and some of the selected faculties. The aim was to determine the methods used for the conservation of these buildings.

Findings

Alexandria University has a heritage value not only in its great history but also through its heritage buildings. Raising the awarness of the university's affiliates of this heritage will lead to enhance the feelings of loyalty and belongings to the university. Therefore, preserving this heritage and properly managing it is crucial.

Originality/value

Universities have to recognize that their built heritage constitutes a unique expression that can create a distinctive sense of place. University heritage is crucial in defining and interpreting the university cultural identity. The institution must identify resources that will help build a new public image and contribute to develop a successful brand. Campus appearance is an important factor that has a significant impact on student feelings of loyalty and belonging.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide insights into the complicated relationship between earnings management (EM) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) during the financial downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

Parametric t-tests and non-parametric Wilcoxon rank-sum tests accompanied by ordinary least squares regression analysis, augmented with Newey–West procedure approaches, are used for a sample that consists of 1,984 firms from 47 countries for the period of 2014–2020. EM was proxied once with discretionary accruals using the modified Jones model (1995) and once with real earnings management (REM) using the Roychowdhury model (2006). This study uses environmental, social, and governance scores from the Thomson Reuters database as a proxy for CSR.

Findings

The results reveal that firms tend to engage more in EM practices during the pandemic and that more socially responsible firms tend to be honest and transparent during the financial reporting process. Interestingly, it was found that more socially responsible firms engaged less in REM practices during the pandemic.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this research help lenders, investors, policymakers and managers gain a better understanding of EM practices during a negative shock and shed light on the importance of CSR in being ethical.

Originality/value

The findings extend both the literature on the role of CSR in promoting financial reporting quality and the literature on the impact of COVID-19 on accrual and REM practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices across various domains has created a demand for real-time computing resources that traditional cloud computing models struggle to meet. Fog computing, which brings computation resources closer to IoT devices, has emerged as a promising solution. An automatic service placement framework is needed to use fog computing resources efficiently.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, first a three-layer independent service framework is introduced to define relationships between IoT devices and fog layers, facilitating automatic application deployment. Next, an enhanced version of the equilibrium optimizer (EO) algorithm, inspired by physics, is designed for service placement in fog computing environments.

Findings

Simulations reveal that the proposed approach surpasses existing methods, achieving a 99% success rate compared to the closest alternative’s 93%. The algorithm also significantly reduces waiting and planning times for service placement, proving its efficiency and effectiveness in optimizing IoT service deployment in fog computing.

Research limitations/implications

One of the primary limitations is the computational complexity involved in dynamically adjusting to real-time changes in network conditions and IoT workloads. Although improved EO offers improvements in placement efficiency, it may not be fully optimized for highly fluctuating environments. Another important limitation is the uncertainty in node resources. Fog computing environments often face unpredictable changes in the availability and capacity of resources across nodes. This uncertainty can affect the algorithm’s ability to consistently make optimal decisions for IoT service placement.

Practical implications

From a practical perspective, the implementation of the proposed framework and the improved EO algorithm can drastically enhance the efficiency of IoT service deployment in fog computing systems. Organizations that rely on IoT networks, particularly those with critical real-time requirements, can benefit from reduced service placement times and lower failure rates. This can lead to better resource utilization, reduced operational costs and improved overall performance of IoT systems. The commercial impact is evident in industries such as smart cities, healthcare, where fast data processing is crucial.

Social implications

Our proposed framework has important implications for real-world IoT applications, particularly in areas requiring low latency processing, such as healthcare, smart cities. By reducing service delays and optimizing resource allocation, the framework can significantly improve the quality and reliability of services. Additionally, improved resource management leads to cost savings and better system efficiency, making the technology accessible to a wider range of applications.

Originality/value

Existing resource placement strategies have shown inadequate performance, highlighting the need for more advanced algorithms. This study introduces a three-layer automatic framework for enhancing the application deployment of a fog system beside a novel improved EO algorithm to offer a robust solution for assigning IoT applications to fog nodes.

Abstract

Purpose

This study reviews scholarly work in sustainable green logistics and remanufacturing (SGLR) and their subdisciplines, in combination with bibliometric, thematic and content analyses that provide a viewpoint on categorization and a future research agenda. This paper provides insight into current research trends in the subjects of interest by examining the most essential and most referenced articles promoting sustainability and climate-neutral logistics.

Design/methodology/approach

For the literature review, the authors extracted and sifted 2180 research and review papers for the period 2008–2023 from the Scopus database. The authors performed bibliometric and content analyses using multiple software programs such as Gephi, VOSviewer and R programming.

Findings

The SGLR papers can be grouped into seven clusters: (1) The circular economy facets; (2) Decarbonization of operations to nurture a climate-neutral business; (3) Green sustainable supply chain management; (4) Drivers and barriers of reverse logistics and the circular economy; (5) Business models for sustainable logistics and the circular economy; (6) Transportation problems in sustainable green logistics and (7) Digitalization of logistics and supply chain management.

Practical implications

In this review, fundamental ideas are established, research gaps are identified and multiple future research subjects are proposed. These propositions are categorized into three main research streams, i.e. (1) Digitalization of SGLR, (2) Enhancing scopes, sectors and industries in the context of SGLR and (3) Developing more efficient and effective climate-neutral and climate change-related solutions and promoting more environmental-related and sustainability research concerning SGLR. In addition, two conceptual models concerning SGLR and climate-neutral strategies are developed and presented for managers and practitioners to consider when adopting green and sustainability principles in supply chains. This review also highlights the need for academics to go beyond frameworks and build new techniques and instruments for monitoring SGLR performance in the real world.

Originality/value

This study provides an overview of the evolution of SGLR; it also clarifies concepts, environmental concerns and climate change practices, particularly those directed to supply chain management.

Purpose

The Metaverse holds vast amounts of user data, making it essential to address threats to its confidentiality, integrity and availability. These threats are not purely technological, as user actions and perceptions, shaped by psychological factors, can influence cybersecurity challenges. Thus, a holistic approach incorporating technological and psychological dimensions is crucial for safeguarding data security and privacy. This research explores users’ cybersecurity behavior in the Metaverse by integrating the technology threat avoidance theory (TTAT) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB).

Design/methodology/approach

The model was assessed using data collected from 746 Metaverse users. The empirical data were analyzed using a dual structural equation modeling-artificial neural network (SEM-ANN) approach.

Findings

The main PLS-SEM findings indicated that cybersecurity behavior is significantly affected by attitude, perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, perceived threat and avoidance motivation. The ANN results showed that perceived threat with a normalized importance of 100% is the most significant factor influencing cybersecurity behavior. The ANN results also showed that perceived severity with a normalized importance of 98.79% significantly impacts perceived threat.

Originality/value

The novelty of this research stems from developing a unified model grounded in TTAT and TPB to understand cybersecurity behaviors in the Metaverse. Unlike previous Metaverse studies that solely focused on measuring behavioral intentions or user behaviors, this study takes a step further by evaluating users’ cybersecurity behaviors. Alongside its theoretical insights, the study offers practical recommendations for software developers, decision-makers and service providers.

Purpose

Healthcare wastes (HCWs) present substantial environmental and societal risks, including infection and exposure to hazardous substances. The aim of this study is to present a new multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method, named the ELECTOR method, for selecting the best healthcare waste disposal method (HCWDM) based on a comprehensive list of criteria. The main research question of this study is: What is the prioritization of HCWDMs considering economic, environmental, technical and social criteria?

Design/methodology/approach

This research employs a novel hybrid MCDM method to evaluate and select suitable HCWDMs. Initially, a comprehensive set of criteria for assessing and prioritizing HCWDMs is established. Criteria weights are determined using the best-worst method. Subsequently, a hybrid MCDM method is introduced to rank the HCWDMs. Fuzzy numbers are applied to handle qualitative criteria uncertainties. The proposed method is applied to a real-world case study to prioritize HCWDMs.

Findings

A total of 24 criteria, including two novel criteria (“System process speed” and “System setup speed”), for evaluating and prioritizing the HCWDMs were identified from the literature review and case study analysis. The study showed that the key criteria influencing HCWDM selection were “Operation cost”, “Occupational hazards of human resources”, and “The impact of released substances on health”. Based on the results, the autoclave, encapsulation and hydroclave methods are identified as the most suitable HCWDMs for the studied case, respectively.

Originality/value

This study introduces a novel hybrid MCDM method tailored for HCWDM selection, enhancing the robustness of the decision-making. The inclusion of innovative criteria and the integration of fuzzy numbers to address qualitative ambiguities strengthen the originality of the findings. Specifically, introducing “System process speed” and “System setup speed” contributes to expanding the criteria landscape in HCWDM research.
