Abstract

Purpose

Digital games have not only surged in popularity but also have sparked a renaissance, catapulting virtual adventures into the realm of cultural phenomena. It has spilled over as countless individuals find themselves drawn to the tangible pieces of the worlds they love, mulling over the procurement of game merchandise and memorabilia. These items are more than mere collectibles; they are emblems of unwavering enthusiasm for game culture. This study employs the consumer culture theory (CCT) to investigate game players’ propensity to purchase merchandise products.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, social media and online forums were used to collect samples from Taiwan, obtaining 311 valid responses. Partial least squares (PLS) was employed to analyze the research model.

Findings

The findings underscore the significance of loyalty as a critical factor affecting individuals’ ethnocentrism and cosmopolitanism attitudes, which also significantly impact the likelihood of players purchasing game merchandise products.

Originality/value

Based on CCT, this study explores game players’ willingness to purchase game merchandise. In Asia, transforming digital game content into peripheral products is a marketing strategy. This study holds practical and academic implications, contributing to the advancement of research in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify a value co-creation framework for live streaming through tourism scenes (LStTS). It also clarifies the value attributes of LStTS and makes an empirical test.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a mixed-method approach. In Study 1, a total of 12,216 pieces of viewers’ comments and ten web news reports were coded and analyzed employing a grounded theory approach. In Study 2, data were collected from 587 Douyin e-commerce users. Exploratory factor analysis and partial least squares structural equation modeling were used to test the value co-creation framework of LStTS.

Findings

In Study 1, six value attributes in three categories were identified based on a content analysis of viewers’ comments. In Study 2, a three-order factorial model of value co-creation in LStTS was identified and tested.

Research limitations/implications

Our study is limited by the preponderance of female respondents in the sample and the unique nature of the research context.

Practical implications

Merchants and streamers should consider whether there is a fit between the merchandise and the tourism scene when selecting the tourism scene for live streaming marketing; they can select novel and beautiful natural tourism scenes to attract viewers. Detailed and comprehensive product information should be provided in the process of live streaming marketing and sharing with consumers.

Originality/value

The novelty of our study lies in the provision of a new value co-creation framework in LStTS, which offers a theoretical basis for analyzing the value of the tourism scene in live streaming marketing.

Abstract

Purpose

This article presents a history of the visual merchandising of American firearms from the mid-19th century until the present day. Although the scholarly literature has investigated visual representations of guns in advertising and popular media, it has paid far less attention to how sellers have displayed these objects at or near the point of purchase.

Design/methodology/approach

Primary sources include frescoes, engravings and photographs, plus papers, advertising and illustrations in popular newspapers and trade magazines. These and other period visual data are supplemented by secondary sources from a variety of fields, especially retailing and firearms history.

Findings

Evidence shows that American firearms were merchandised visually by Samuel Colt at three world expositions in the 1850s, by gunmakers and retailers in the latter 19th century, by Winchester and Remington dealers in the 1920s and 1930s, by high- and low-end retailers in New York in the first half of the 20th century and by gun stores, auctions and shows up to the present day.

Originality/value

The history of visual merchandising generally has focused upon major department stores, their alluring street-front windows and their fancy interior displays. This research explores past and present visual merchandising of firearms by manufacturers and smaller retailers. To the best of the author’s knowledge, it is the first such history of the subject.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of sports sponsorship on brand equity using two managerially related outcomes: price premium and market share.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a best–worst discrete choice experiment (BWDCE) and compares the outcome with that of the purchase intention scale, an established probabilistic measure of purchase intention. The total sample consists of 409 fans of three soccer teams sponsored by three different competing brands: Nike, Adidas and Puma.

Findings

With sports sponsorship, fans were willing to pay more for the sponsor’s product, with the sponsoring brand obtaining the highest market share. Prominent brands generally performed better than less prominent brands. The best–worst scaling method was also 35% more accurate in predicting brand choice than a purchase intention scale.

Research limitations/implications

Future research could use the same method to study other types of sponsors, such as title sponsors or other product categories.

Practical implications

Sponsorship managers can use this methodology to assess the return on investment in sponsorship engagement.

Originality/value

Prior sponsorship studies on brand equity tend to ignore market share or fans’ willingness to pay a price premium for a sponsor’s goods and services. However, these two measures are crucial in assessing the effectiveness of sponsorship. This study demonstrates how to conduct such an assessment using the BWDCE method. It provides a clearer picture of sponsorship in terms of its economic value, which is more managerially useful.

After completion of the case study, students will be able to understand the importance of cultivating the ecosystem of a social enterprise and how social entrepreneurs may use them to leverage their success; analyze the rationale of profits for social enterprises; understand the meaning of social franchising and explore the mechanisms for expansion and sustainability of the café; and assess the impact of the social enterprise in terms of advocacy, awareness and implementation at the field level.

Case overview/synopsis

This case study aims to provide insight into the sensitive issue of acid attacks and aims to provide an understanding to the struggles of a social enterprise which has a mission to fight for the rights and the betterment of the lives of the acid attack survivors. It delves in to philosophy, business model and the potential future strategies of Sheroes Hangout café which is a project of the Foundation committed with providing decent employment opportunities to the acid attack survivors by providing them treatment, training and rehabilitation. This case study delves with the problem of the co-founders of finding that unique business model which would ensure expansion and sustainability of the café without compromising the core mission of the café – the upliftment of the acid attack survivors.

Abstract

The primary objective of this research is to identify and analyze the influence of digital marketing practises on performance of business of manufacturing enterprises in Delhi-NCR. A quantitative and descriptive research design was implemented in this study. 368 participants from various enterprises were chosen. Questionnaires were used to collect data on the benefits and challenges which are perceived of digital marketing, as well as usage and business performance of these enterprises. SPSS v24.0 is utilized to carry out statistical analysis on the collected data. The study discovered that advantages and problems of digital marketing practices influenced the usage of digital marketing. Furthermore, the execution of digital marketing had a prominent influence on sales and total number of customers of these enterprises, and this relationship was moderated by type and size of businesses. It was discovered that using digital marketing strategies increased business profits by raising digital marketing awareness among consumers and various industries. It made digital marketing easier to implement in various businesses. However, research should be conducted for appropriate generalization in a larger scale.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show that forgotten classics, such as Melvin T. Copeland’s (1924) Principles of Merchandising, can still teach lessons to students of the history of marketing thought.

Design/methodology/approach

The method involved using various key words on several internet search engines. The extensive internet search produced more than a dozen contemporaneous reviews and commentaries. Additionally, there was an intensive search through the histories of marketing thought literature. The extensive and intensive searches allowed a meta-analysis reexamining Copeland’s principles in light of future historical developments from the mid-1920s to the 21st century.

Findings

Historically, Copeland’s principles established the commodity school of marketing thought. (One of the three traditional approaches to understanding marketing taught to generations of students from the mid-1920s until the mid-1960s.) Although the traditional approaches/schools have long gone out of favor, Copeland’s classification of consumer and industrial (business) goods (products and services) have stood the test of time and are still in use 100 years later. Long overlooked, Copeland’s (1924) Principles of Merchandising also anticipated the marketing management/strategy as well as the consumer/buyer behavior schools of marketing thought, dominant in the discipline since the 1960s, for which he has seldom – if ever – been acknowledged.

Research limitations/implications

Historical research is limited because some relevant source material may no longer exist or may have been overlooked.

Originality/value

There have been no reviews of Copeland’s principles in almost a century, and no published meta-analysis of this forgotten classic exists. New discoveries reveal the value in studying marketing history and the history of marketing thought. For marketing as a social science to progress, it is invaluable to understand how ideas originated, were improved and integrated into larger conceptualizations, classification schema and theories over time.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the association between related party transactions (RPTs) and insider trading behaviour as well as the moderating role of environmental, social and governance (ESG) on the association between RPTs and the extent of corporate insider trading.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a sample of the top 300 companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange from 2008 to 2019 and analysed data using OLS regression and generalised method of moments.

Findings

This study found a significant and positive association between RPTs and insider trading dominated by buy trades. However, this study observed that ESG strength reduces the association between RPTs and insider trading dominated by buy trades.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study highlight to regulators the value of considering disclosure on RPTs and insider trading to improve and refine regulations and promote compliance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the dearth literature on the association between RPTs and insider trading as well as the potential moderating factors affecting such a relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to explore the relationship between the attributes of Olympic mascots and their impact on sponsorship effectiveness. Based on a multiattribute model and the introduction of engagement theory and the meaning transfer model, this article uses the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics mascot “Bing Dwen Dwen” as the research object to empirically analyze the effects and mechanisms of the mascot's attributes on preference, event engagement, sponsorship enterprise trust and sponsorship enterprise attitude, ultimately constructing a sponsorship effectiveness model.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey method was used to examine 238 respondents' emotions and attitudes towards companies participating in sponsoring Olympic mascots.

Findings

The study found that the main attributes of the mascot include visual and emotional factors, both of which have a positive impact on preference, with emotional factors having a greater influence than visual factors. Visual and emotional factors indirectly affect engagement through preference. Preference and engagement play a completely mediating role in the effect of mascot attributes on sponsorship enterprise trust and sponsorship enterprise attitude.

Practical implications

This study provides practical recommendations for managers to achieve marketing success in sports sponsorship through mascots.

Originality/value

This paper provides a measurement tool for the study of mascot attributes and important support for subsequent research in sponsorship marketing.
