Abstract

Purpose

The current gap between the required and available artificial intelligence (AI) professionals poses significant challenges for organisations and academia. Organisations are challenged to identify and secure the appropriate AI competencies. Simultaneously, academia is challenged to design, offer and quickly scale academic programmes in line with industry needs and train new generations of AI professionals. Therefore, identifying and structuring AI competencies is necessary to effectively overcome the AI competence shortage.

Design/methodology/approach

A probabilistic topic model was applied to explore the AI competence categories empirically. The authors analysed 1159 AI-related online job ads published on LinkedIn.

Findings

The authors identified five predominant competence categories: (1) Data Science, (2) AI Software Development, (3) AI Product Development and Management, (4) AI Client Servicing, and (5) AI Research. These five competence categories were summarised under the developed AI competence framework.

Originality/value

The AI competence framework contributes to clarifying and structuring the diverse AI landscape. These findings have the potential to aid various stakeholders involved in the process of training, recruiting and selecting AI professionals. They may guide organisations in constructing a complementary portfolio of AI competencies by helping users match the right competence requirements with an organisation's needs and business objectives. Similarly, they can support academia in designing academic programmes aligned with industry needs. Furthermore, while focusing on AI, this study contributes to the research stream of information technology (IT) competencies.

Abstract

Purpose

As one of the most energy-intensive sectors, the manufacturing industry is strongly affected by current economic, ecological and political issues and is increasingly looking to reduce its energy consumption through effective management. One important component of energy management is monitoring, which can be improved by using the Internet of Things (IoT). This study aims to identify the factors behind the adoption of IoT energy monitoring systems in manufacturing industries and IoT’s impact on consumption in this context. Moreover, this study explores what constitutes successful implementation and develops recommendations on how companies can best use the generated energy-saving potential.

Design/methodology/approach

For this purpose, an exploratory, inductive research approach is taken in which five semi-structured interviews with IoT energy-monitoring platform providers located in Germany are conducted and additional documents about these platforms are analysed.

Findings

Based on these interviews and documents, this study defines the relevant factors involved in the increased adoption of IoT energy monitoring systems as desired cost reduction, regulatory requirements and customer expectations. Once implemented, a company’s energy efficiency potential strongly depends on its individual situation; however, the transparency characteristic of IoT supports managers in deriving effective energy-saving measures. Additionally, the used efficiency potential is influenced by the level of data collection and organisational capabilities.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, as the first study, this research combines findings from the energy management and IoT research streams and places them into an organisational context. The application of the fit-viability model as an overarching framework enhances the theoretical contributions of this study. Moreover, focusing on Germany and its substantial industrial sector enables the gathering of important insights and the analysis of the specific use case of industrial IoT, which yields new findings for practitioners as well.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the potential impact of blockchain technology on supply chain performance (SCP). This study further delves into the enablers of blockchain adoption (BA) in SCM and investigates both the direct and mediated effects of blockchain assimilation on garnering a competitive edge in the supply chain and bolstering innovation proficiency, ultimately enhancing SCP.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a quantitative approach, leveraging partial least squares structural equation modelling. Empirical data were sourced from 500 validated data sets obtained through questionnaires.

Findings

The results indicate that technological readiness and knowledge sharing are key drivers for integrating blockchain into supply chains, with technology readiness displaying a substantially stronger influence. Furthermore, BA significantly enhances supply chain innovation capabilities (SCIC), competitive performance (CP) and overall supply chain efficiency. Notably, both SCIC and CP mediate and amplify the positive effects of blockchain on SCP, emphasising the vital role of innovation and competition in optimising the benefits of blockchain.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to bridge the gap in the literature connecting SCM and blockchain. The established model augments the theoretical discourse on the SCM-blockchain, offering scholars a validated framework that can be adapted and built upon in future studies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study analyzes the performance implications of adopting blockchain to support supply chain business processes. The technology holds as many promises as implementation challenges, so interest in its impact on operational performance has grown steadily over the last few years.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on transaction cost economics and the contingency theory, we built a set of hypotheses. These were tested through a long-term event study and an ordinary least squares regression involving 130 adopters listed in North America.

Findings

Compared with the control sample, adopters displayed significant abnormal performance in terms of labor productivity, operating cycle and profitability, whereas sales appeared unaffected. Firms in regulated settings and closer to the end customer showed more positive effects. Neither industry-level competition nor the early involvement of a project partner emerged as relevant contextual factors.

Originality/value

This research presents the first extensive analysis of operational performance based on objective measures. In contrast to previous studies and theoretical predictions, the results indicate that blockchain adoption is not associated with sales improvement. This can be explained considering that secure data storage and sharing do not guarantee the factual credibility of recorded data, which needs to be proved to customers in alternative ways. Conversely, improvements in other operational performance dimensions confirm that blockchain can support inter-organizational transactions more efficiently. The results are relevant in times when, following hype, there are signs of disengagement with the technology.

Abstract

Purpose

With the rise of cryptocurrency and its influence on the financial industry, this paper aims to explore cryptocurrency affordances that lead to approach–avoidance behavioral intentions for non-users (potential) and the intention to continue use for users (actual), drawing upon affordance theory and chasm theory.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected data from 480 potential and actual users in Germany and used maximum likelihood structural equation modeling (ML-SEM) to analyze it. In particular, the data consisted of 301 cryptocurrency users in Germany\ the authors used ML-SEM to test the post-adoption model. Additionally, logistic regression was utilized to determine the dominant actual usage method (store of value or medium of exchange) for various cryptocurrency coins.

Findings

According to the study's results, the perceived value benefits have a positive impact on the behavioral intention of potential users to adopt cryptocurrency, and they influence the intention of actual users to continue using it. However, both perceived volatility and financial risk tolerance are the most crucial factors hindering cryptocurrency adoption, whether in the pre-adoption or the post-adoption stage.

Originality/value

This is the first study to reveal cryptocurrency affordances and examine their effect on behavioral intentions toward cryptocurrency adoption based on the differences between non-users (potential) and users (actual). Furthermore, the authors explore how cryptocurrency holders perceive and invest in different coins (e.g. NFTs), which sheds light on factors such as financial risk tolerance that affect their decision making.

Abstract

Purpose

Over the past few years, scholars have examined new ways of working from various perspectives, with a significant increase in studies during the pandemic period, when remote work – supported by digital technologies and platforms – became imperative for many companies to protect the health of both the local community and employees. It also served as a solution for businesses to maintain operations and continue delivering products and services to customers. In the post-pandemic period, the new working reality has evolved into a complex concept grounded in variables such as work flexibility, digitisation, innovation, sustainability, collaboration, social inclusion and the equitable treatment of all categories of employees. The purpose of this paper is to identify the elements that can impact employees’ satisfaction with the new normal in working arrangements, as well as to understand whether workers’ socio-demographic characteristics and the organisational context influence their level of satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodological approach is based on cluster analysis with random sampling. Initially, a tool for assessing workers’ satisfaction with the new way of working was developed based on a literature review, identifying eight key areas of influencing factors. This tool was subsequently updated and refined through focus groups, expert evaluation and a pre-test. Based on participants’ responses, satisfaction scores were analysed using a Likert scale in relation to various variables. According to the scores obtained, a cluster analysis was conducted to identify different segments of workers within the sample.

Findings

The study’s findings reveal six distinct clusters of employees, each exhibiting different levels of satisfaction with new normal work arrangements. These clusters offer a detailed perspective on how various groups experience and perceive flexible work models, reflecting a spectrum of needs and preferences within the workforce. Key sources of dissatisfaction include inadequate digital tools and physical workspace options, as well as some difficulties in maintaining work–life balance. By addressing these specific issues through targeted interventions, organisations can significantly enhance overall satisfaction and engagement. These insights are particularly valuable for HR professionals seeking to optimise employee well-being and productivity in hybrid or remote work environments.

Research limitations/implications

The research presents certain limitations, primarily due to its focus on a single country – Italy. This constraint may limit the generalisability of the findings to other national contexts. Future research could explore the impact of different contexts – such as national, regional and organisational factors – on employee satisfaction with new ways of working. In addition, it would be valuable to examine the significance of each identified factor affecting worker satisfaction, as well as to investigate variations in the importance of these factors among employees of different genders, ages and job positions. Such studies would provide deeper insights into how diverse demographic and geographic factors shape workers’ experiences and perceptions of remote and flexible work arrangements in the new normal.

Practical implications

The findings of the study can be useful for HRM when implementing new ways of working to achieve maximum satisfaction and better performance of employees.

Originality/value

At the time the research began, no tools validated in Italy for measuring workers’ satisfaction with the new normal work arrangements were available.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the contribution of blockchain technology to supply chain risk management and its impact on performance among Indian manufacturing companies.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on a resource-based view, dynamic capability and system of systems theory, this study examines the direct relationships between blockchain, supply chain risk management and supply chain performance. The authors validate the mediating effects of three supply chain risk management components, namely supply risk management, demand risk management and cyber security management, on financial transaction reliability and information reliability. Data were collected from 204 Indian manufacturing companies that have adopted blockchain technology.

Findings

The results demonstrate that companies adopting blockchain technology have experienced positive outcomes in managing supply chain-related risks, financial transaction reliability and information reliability. These findings provide valuable guidance to managers, highlighting blockchain as a competitive advantage for supply chain management.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no previous research on blockchain-based risk management capabilities has been conducted.
