Abstract

Purpose

We consider a joint optimization problem of product platform design and scheduling on unrelated additive/subtractive hybrid machines, and seek to find efficient solution approaches to solve such problem.

Design/methodology/approach

We propose a mathematical formulation for the problem of simultaneous product platform design and scheduling on unrelated additive/subtractive hybrid machines, and develop a simulated annealing-based hyper-heuristic algorithm with adjustable operator sequence length to solve the problem.

Findings

The simulated annealing-based hyper-heuristic algorithm with adjustable operator sequence length (SAHH-osla) that we proposed can be quite efficient in solving the problem of simultaneous product platform design and scheduling on unrelated additive/subtractive hybrid machines.

Originality/value

To the best of our knowledge, we are one of the first to consider both cost-related and time-related criteria for the problem of simultaneous product platform design and scheduling on unrelated additive/subtractive hybrid machines.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a novel general mathematical model to find the optimal product mix of commercial graphite products, which has a complex production process with alternative sub-processes in the graphite mining production process.

Design/methodology/approach

The network optimization was adopted to model the complex graphite mining production process through the optimal allocation of raw graphite, byproducts, and saleable products with comparable sub-processes, which has different processing capacities and costs. The model was tested on a selected graphite manufacturing company, and the optimal graphite product mix was determined through the selection of the optimal production process. In addition, sensitivity and scenario analyses were carried out to accommodate uncertainties and to facilitate further managerial decisions.

Findings

The selected graphite mining company mines approximately 400 metric tons of raw graphite per month to produce ten types of graphite products. According to the optimum solution obtained, the company should produce only six graphite products to maximize its total profit. In addition, the study demonstrated how to reveal optimum managerial decisions based on optimum solutions.

Originality/value

This study has made a significant contribution to the graphite manufacturing industry by modeling the complex graphite mining production process with a network optimization technique that has yet to be addressed at this level of detail. The sensitivity and scenario analyses support for further managerial decisions.

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to cover banking efficiency using the concept of the Meta frontier function and to study group and subgroup differences in the production technology. This study estimates the technical efficiency (TE) and technology gap ratios (TGRs) for banks in Islamic countries. Using the assumption of the convex hull of the Meta frontier production set using the virtual Meta frontier within the nonparametric approach as presented by Battese and Rao (2002), Battese et al. (2004), and O'Donnell et al. (2007, 2008) and after relaxing this assumption, the study investigates if there is a significant difference between these two methods. To overcome the deterministic criterion addressed to nonparametric approach, the bootstrapping technique has been applied. The first part of this chapter covers the analytical framework necessary for the definition of a Meta frontier function and its estimation using nonparametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) in the case where we impose the assumption of the convex production set and follows in the case of relaxation of this assumption. Then we estimated the TE and the TGR in concave and nonconcave Meta frontier cases by applying the Bootstrap-DEA approach. The empirical part will be reserved for highlighting these methods on data bank to study the technical and technological performance level and prove if there is a difference between the two methods. Three groups of banks namely commercial, investment, and Islamic banks in 17 Islamic countries over a period of 16 years between 1996 and 2011 are used.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper aims to design a robust wind turbine emulator (WTE) based on a three-phase induction motor (3PIM).

Design/methodology/approach

The 3PIM is driven by a soft voltage source inverter (VSI) controlled by a specific space vector modulation. By adjusting the appropriate vector sequence selection, the desired VSI output voltage allows a real wind turbine speed emulation in the laboratory, taking into account the wind profile, static and dynamic behaviors and parametric variations for theoretical and then experimental analysis. A Mexican hat profile and a sinusoidal profile are therefore used as the wind speed system input to highlight the electrical, mechanical and electromagnetic system response.

Findings

The simulation results, based on relative error data, show that the proposed reactive power control method effectively estimates the flux and the rotor time constant, thus ensuring an accurate trajectory tracking of the wind speed for the wind emulation application.

Originality/value

The proposed architecture achieves its results through the use of mathematical theory and WTE topology combine with an online adaptive estimator and Lyapunov stability adaptation control methods. These approaches are particularly relevant for low-cost or low-power alternative current (AC) motor drives in the field of renewable energy emulation. It has the advantage of eliminating the need for expensive and unreliable position transducers, thereby increasing the emulator drive life. A comparative analysis was also carried out to highlight the online adaptive estimator fast response time and accuracy.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to investigate how family involvement in management (FIM) affects market valuation and whether this effect is influenced by the presence of founder chief executive officers (CEOs) and the dual role of their CEO positions.

Design/methodology/approach

Tobin’s Q ratio measured market valuation, while FIM was measured by the ratio of family managers to the total number of board of directors (BOD) seats. Additionally, the appointment of founders to CEO positions and the dual role of their CEO positions were used as moderators. As a panel data technique, the dynamic generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator was employed for a sample of 85 Egyptian-listed firms from 2011 to 2018.

Findings

The findings revealed that FIM negatively affects market valuation; hence, the more family managers serving on the BOD, the lower the firm’s market value. Moreover, the findings showed that the impact of FIM on market valuation is mitigated by the presence of founder CEOs and the dual role of their CEO positions.

Originality/value

This study highlights the negative repercussions of FIM on firm value and the urgency of professionalizing the family business through an independent BOD and ensuring more effective monitoring systems.

Multinational enterprises (MNEs) own and control technological resources and capabilities that make them critical actors in accelerating the transition toward net zero. Even beyond the energy sector, stakeholders are putting increasing pressure on MNEs to reduce the carbon intensity of their operations, that is, to improve their carbon performance. While there is unambiguous evidence that national climate policy is a critical catalyst for long-term carbon performance improvements, there is limited research on how MNEs’ carbon strategies react to climate policies. This chapter reviews the concepts, drivers, and strategies connected to carbon performance in the broader sustainability and management literature to clarify potential complementarities to international business (IB). The authors then highlight how MNEs will face increasing institutional complexity along two dimensions: (1) the structural diversity of institutional environments and (2) institutional dynamism, primarily reflected by public policy. The proposed conceptual framework maps these two dimensions to national and subnational levels, and the authors present two data sources that allow the quantitative analysis of country differences in the diversity and dynamism of national climate policy. The authors conclude that there are ample opportunities for IB researchers to explore MNEs’ strategic reactions to climate policy and to inform policymakers about the consequences of national climate policy in the global economy.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to assess the short- and long-run effects of the interaction between institutional quality and financial development (FD) on the competitiveness of the WAEMU economy over the period 2007–2018.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology consisted of cross-referencing a synthetic indicator of FD with indicators of institutional quality and then estimating an auto regressive distributed lag model.

Findings

The results of the pooled mean group and dynamic fixed effect estimation show a positive and significant impact of this interaction on the competitiveness of the economy in the long run. In the short run, the results are quite similar to those in the long run for the direct effects but different for the crosses. Also, the analysis of country specificity shows that the results are similar to those in the short run since the interaction between FD and institutional quality (political stability and government effectiveness) negatively affects the competitiveness of Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Mali, and positively affects the competitiveness of Benin and Senegal.

Social implications

These results suggest the need for effective policies to improve the quality of institutions to enhance the mobilization of financial resources through FD to ensure the competitiveness of economies. Improving the quality of the political and institutional environment is a prerequisite for economic competitiveness.

Originality/value

The paper is in line with the New Institutional Economics that developed in the 1970s. This referential framework is a heterogeneous body of work that encompasses works whose common point is the determination of the role of institutions in economic coordination. Unlike previous studies, which have focused on the contribution of the interaction between institutional quality variables and FD on economic growth, this paper analyzes the effects of this interaction on economic competitiveness. It, therefore, constitutes a contribution to this literature and aims primarily to fill this gap.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian−Ukrainian war on the volatility of several cryptocurrencies.

Design/methodology/approach

To do this, the study uses the GJR-GARCH and dynamic conditional correlation (DCC)-GJR-GARCH models, which allow the author to estimate the conditional variance of the cryptocurrencies’ returns and assess their dependence structure over time.

Findings

The results show that the health crisis had a negative impact on all cryptocurrencies studied, except for Bitcoin, which experienced a positive impact. Additionally, the study finds that the Russian-Ukrainian war had a mixed impact on the cryptocurrencies studied, with some experiencing positive impacts (BNB, Dogecoin, Ethereum and Tether) and others experiencing negative impacts (Bitcoin, BUSD, Coin and XRP). Moreover, the author analyzes the spillover effects among the cryptocurrencies and observe significant interdependence during the periods under study.

Originality/value

Finally, the study discusses the implications of the findings for investors, policymakers and regulators, highlighting the importance of considering external factors when making investment decisions or designing regulatory frameworks for the cryptocurrency market.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to the importance of mitigating the issues that afflict society and natural habitats on a global scale, the United Nations has established 17 key goals to directly and effectively mitigate problems such as extreme poverty, lack of access to quality educational environments or the loss of life in underwater and terrestrial ecosystems, which need to be addressed from multiple parties, particularly from the business network. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to analyse the potential impact of female participation in boardrooms on the disclosure of corporate information regarding the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into business strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

The research hypotheses were developed on the basis of a multi-theoretical perspective, which included agency theory, upper echelon theory, resources dependency theory and critical mass theory. The hypotheses were tested using a regression model for a sample of 8,903 companies for the period 2019–2022.

Findings

The results highlight the importance of an increase in female boardroom representation as a key driver in the achieving of the SDGs with favourable effects on environmental and social issues, being robust to changes in methodological specifications.

Research limitations/implications

This research provides valuable evidence for the analysis of gender issues in the business field; however, it has some limitations that can be addressed by academics. In this sense, this research solely examined the impact of chief executive officer (CEO) duality while overlooking the potential for its influence to be amplified by a distinctive configuration of the board, such as the involvement of a former CEO, a greater or lesser degree of participation of executive directors in the boardroom or the fact that the CEO is a woman. These factors could either reinforce or obstruct the benefits of female directors in the accomplishment of the SDGs.

Practical implications

From a practical standpoint, this research illustrates the advantages of the active involvement of women in the boardroom. Their participation has resulted in notable modifications to corporate strategies, with a focus on aligning business actions with the attainment of the SDGs and related transparency. This facilitates a more comprehensive understanding of the business interest in conserving natural habitats and eradicating social inequalities.

Social implications

From a societal perspective, the findings illustrate the significance of actively promoting the involvement of women in organisational leadership roles. The inclusion of women's perspectives can enhance the planning of business processes, with far-reaching implications for stakeholders. Therefore, it is vital to guarantee opportunities for women, such as access to higher education and gainful employment, particularly in nations where there are considerable constraints to the intellectual and economic advancement of girls and women.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the optimal configuration of the boardroom, especially the gendered boardroom (i.e. García-Sánchez et al., 2023b; Liao et al., 2015), and its ability to address today's global challenges. Furthermore, the findings indicate the necessity of establishing pathways for women to reach positions of influence within the organisational hierarchy, thereby facilitating beneficial societal changes. These changes can include the mitigation of environmental damage and the rectification of historical social inequalities.
