The current study empirically examines the influence of state capacity on entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Purpose

The current study empirically examines the influence of state capacity on entrepreneurship.

Design/methodology/approach

This research draws upon the national measures of 118 countries and employs a more robust measure of state capacity.

Findings

The findings show a positive correlation between state capacity and entrepreneurship. However, the results reveal that the effect of state capacity on entrepreneurship is stronger in developing low-technology nations compared to developed high-technology nations.

Research limitations/implications

When available, future research could employ more recent data to estimate the effects of state capacity on entrepreneurship. In addition to developmental and technological levels, various other factors can also be explored such as national culture and welfare regime type.

Practical implications

The current study enables policymakers to identify factors critical in developing state capacity. Policymakers can also have better-tailored approaches for developing targeted initiatives and establishing entrepreneurship-supportive regulative institutional arrangements.

Originality/value

Available literature lacks in empirically examining the influence of state capacity on entrepreneurship. The current study attempts to fill this gap.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine the role of intellectual capital (IC) on financial performance (FP), the mediating effect of high-performance work practices (HPWPs) and the moderating role of big data analytics on the banking sector operating in Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected quantitative and cross-sectional data using structured questionnaire forms distributed to selected targeted respondents using a convenient sampling technique. The 518 useable questionnaires were analysed using the SmartPLS software through a structural equation modelling technique to test the proposed research hypotheses.

Findings

The study results revealed that IC has shown an impact on FP. The role of HPWP significantly mediates between IC and FP, while the moderating role of big data analytics remains insignificant.

Practical implications

This study highlights IC's role in enhancing FP in the Pakistani banking sector. It will bring a higher quality IC in the banking sector, and they will be better positioned to serve the community. Policymakers need to invest in IC and HPWP and utilise BDA, which will boost FP and uplift the quality of the banking sector.

Originality/value

This study extends the concept of IC and adds the theoretical role of HPWPs and big data analytics in the literature on IC, along with the contextual application. The study also develops a unique role of the integrated IC model theory with a relationship to the banking sector of Pakistan.

Abstract

Recognising the significance of international trade in economic growth, this research explores the drivers of exports in South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation countries from 2008 to 2021. The study employs the export demand model and the augmented exports supply model and utilises pooled time-series data. This study questions whether export supply decisions are based on traditional trade model factors, emerging trading realities or macroeconomic variables. The model based on fixed effects evaluates the connection between exports and their possible drivers. Traditional export supply models suggest determinants like production capacity, variable cost and relative pricing influencing South Asian export supply performance substantially. Changes in trade, for example, have a substantial impact on export supply, demonstrating that the trade liberalisation procedure promotes growth in exports, compression in imports and technological advancement. The worsening state of the energy industry and growing levels of corruption have proved to be significant deterrents to export supply decisions. The results verify foreign direct investment's positive and medium influence on the expansion of exports. Other variables, however, such as GDP and its growth, Official Development Assistance (ODA), development expenditure, indirect taxation, labour supply and the exchange rate of currencies, have a positive impact on the flow of exports. Furthermore, the data corroborate the notion that increased savings have a significant beneficial influence on the flow of exports. The study proposes that concerned governments examine their export policies and adopt new policies adapted in accordance with changing circumstances with the goal of increasing and enhancing the performance of exports.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to synthesize new cyclodiphosph(V)azane derivatives, 2,2,4,4-tetrachloro-1,3-di-[o-nitriyl]-2,4-di-[N-(pyrimidin-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide]-1,3,2,4- diazadiphosphetidine(H2L) ligand and their Fe(III) and Ag(I) metal complexes as insecticides for protective coatings.

Design/methodology/approach

The substitutes of cyclodiphosph(V)azane sulfonomide and their Fe(III), Ag(I) metal complexes were prepared and confirmed by a combination of elemental analyses, mass spectra, conductivity measurement-vis, FTIR, 1H,13C-NMR TGA, XRD and Docking investigation of the ligand and some complexes to verify their drug ability. The prepared compounds have been incorporated with a polyurethane (PU) coating formula. Gloss, scratch resistance, flexibility and adhesion are some of the coating attributes investigated; mechanical capabilities include impact resistance and shore hardness and physicochemical properties such as chemical resistance of coated PU samples are also investigated.

Findings

The results of the experiments revealed that all PU coatings based on the prepared compounds had good scratch resistance which varied from >1.8 to >2.2 kg. Gloss value varied from 85 to 95 and impact resistance from 1.4 to 2.0 (J), whereas the authors noticed that there was no effect of the prepared compounds in the flexibility and adhesion test. These PU coatings have excellent chemical resistance except the alkali resistance. Insecticide activities of the prepared compounds are promising for resistance to these insects. It was noticed that, metal complex > incorporated PU with Fe (III) metal complex > incorporated PU with ligand.

Originality/value

Insecticide paints based on cyclodiphosph(V)azane sulfonamide and their Fe(III), Ag(I) metal complexes as insecticide agents are novel.

Abstract

Purpose

Studying the shear stress and pressure resulting on the walls of blood vessels, especially during high-pressure cases, which may lead to the explosion or rupture of these vessels, can also lead to the death of many patients. Therefore, it was necessary to try to control the shear and normal stresses on these veins through nanoparticles in the presence of some external forces, such as exposure to some electromagnetic shocks, to reduce the risk of high pressure and stress on those blood vessels. This study aims to examines the shear and normal stresses of electroosmotic-magnetized Sutterby Buongiorno’s nanofluid in a symmetric peristaltic channel with a moderate Reynolds number and curvature. The production of thermal radiation is also considered. Sutterby nanofluids equations of motion, energy equation, nanoparticles concentration, induced magnetic field and electric potential are calculated without approximation using small and long wavelengths with moderate Reynolds numbers.

Design/methodology/approach

The Adomian decomposition method solves the nonlinear partial differential equations with related boundary conditions. Graphs and tables show flow features and biophysical factors like shear and normal stresses.

Findings

This study found that when curvature and a moderate Reynolds number are present, the non-Newtonian Sutterby fluid raises shear stress across all domains due to velocity decay, resulting in high shear stress. Additionally, modest mobility increases shear stress across all channel domains. The Sutterby parameter causes fluid motion resistance, which results in low energy generation and a decrease in the temperature distribution.

Originality/value

Equations of motion, energy equation, nanoparticle concentration, induced magnetic field and electric potential for Sutterby nano-fluids are obtained without any approximation i.e. the authors take small and long wavelengths and also moderate Reynolds numbers.

Abstract

Purpose

This article identifies hybrid nanofluids and industrial thermal engineering devices as significant sources of solar energy. In this study, various nanoparticles suspended in base fluids such as water (H2O) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), along with nanoparticles like graphene oxide (GO) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), are examined. The model also incorporates permeability and the effects of angled magnetic fields to provide a comprehensive analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

We have utilized the fractal fractional operator definition, the quickest and most advanced fractional approach, to address the problems with the hybrid nanofluid suspension. The integral transform scheme, i.e. the Laplace transform, converts the governing equations into a fractional form before various numerical methods are applied to solve the problem. Further, some numerical schemes to address the Laplace inverse are also utilized.

Findings

The fractional effects on flow rate and heat transfer are evident at varying time intervals. Consequently, we conclude that as the fractal constraints increase, the momentum and heat profiles decelerate. Furthermore, all necessary conditions are satisfied, resulting in the momentum and temperature fields decreasing near the plate and increasing over time. Additionally, the water-based (H2O + Go + MoS2) solution exhibits a more pronounced impact compared to the CMC-based (CMC + Go + MoS2) hybrid suspension.

Practical implications

The findings could be very useful in enhancing the efficiency of thermal systems. These findings align more accurately with conventional solutions and can be used to build and optimize various heat management strategies.

Originality/value

The primary goals of this research are to examine the thermal and flow properties of hybrid nanofluids for manufacturing purposes of thermal engineering equipment utilizing fractal fractional definition. Further, to improve thermal system productivity by applying sophisticated fractional techniques to better and maximize heat and momentum transmission in these hybrid nanofluid solutions

Abstract

Purpose

Prior evidence that financial reporting quality (FRQ) of publicly listed firms improves investment efficiency in developed markets leaves unaddressed questions of whether this relationship holds in emerging and frontier markets and what channels influence this relationship. This study aims to test the role of financial constraints faced by firms and managerial risk-taking on the association of FRQ and investment efficiency in 13,231 publicly listed firms in 24 emerging and frontier markets.

Design/methodology/approach

Available accounting data from 1998 to 2022 are collected for all listed firms across 41 industries in 24 countries. Causal relationships are tested using fixed-effect regression analysis, several additional tests and robustness checks are applied using alternative proxies and concerns for endogeneity are addressed using two-stage least square and system generalised method of moments analysis.

Findings

Findings show that FRQ of firms in emerging and frontier markets positively affects investment efficiency, the affirmative impact of FRQ on investment efficiency is higher when firms are facing more financial constraints and when managerial risk-taking is lower and financial constraints and risk-taking have a more pronounced impact on the link between FRQ and investment efficiency in the under-investment scenario.

Originality/value

These findings contribute to the growing body of evidence, shedding light on the meticulous interplay between FRQ and investment efficiency in frontier and emerging markets. Specifically, the increased financial constraints encountered by firms and a more conservative approach to managerial risk-taking emerge as crucial factors complementing this relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to explore the effects of varying polycarbonate concentrations on the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy resin–polycarbonate blends. It investigates solution blending, casting methodologies and surface morphology to understand microstructural changes. The study identifies optimal polycarbonate ratios (7.5–10%) for enhancing tensile strength, impact resistance and thermal stability.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used solution blending to create epoxy resin-polycarbonate blends (2.5–15%), followed by film casting. Thermo-mechanical properties were tested via tensile strength, impact resistance and TGA. Surface morphology was examined to assess microstructural changes across blend ratios.

Findings

The research revealed that epoxy resin-polycarbonate blends exhibit enhanced mechanical and thermal properties at specific polycarbonate concentrations. Optimal performance was observed at 7.5 and 10% polycarbonate, showing significant improvements in tensile strength, impact resistance and thermal stability as confirmed by TGA. Surface morphology analysis highlighted microstructural changes corresponding to different blend ratios, underscoring the critical role of polycarbonate proportions in achieving superior material characteristics.

Originality/value

The research found that incorporating polycarbonate into epoxy resin significantly enhances mechanical and thermal properties, with the best results observed at 7.5 and 10% polycarbonate concentrations. These blends demonstrated improved tensile strength, impact resistance and thermal stability. Surface morphology analysis revealed notable microstructural changes, highlighting the importance of precise polycarbonate ratios in optimizing the performance of the blends.
