Abstract

Purpose

This study empirically investigates whether and how boycott attitudes and subjective norms influence the impact of the perceived behavioral control of boycotts on boycott intention.

Design/methodology/approach

To test our hypotheses, we perform a hierarchical linear regression analysis using data from Japanese (n = 500) and South Koreans (n = 571).

Findings

Boycott attitudes strengthen the positive effect of perceived behavioral control on boycott intentions for Japanese and South Koreans. Contrary to our assumptions, while the direct impact of perceived behavioral control on boycott intention is not significant, there is a negative moderating effect of subjective norms for Japanese consumers.

Originality/value

We argue that when perceived behavioral control is evident in boycotts, consumers listen more to themselves than to others. Our cross-national analysis of actual boycott campaigns is the first study on boycott research to offer implications for the interaction effects among the three key antecedents of psychological motivation factors in the theory of planned behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the impact of metaverse experiences on customers’ offline behavioral intentions: How do customers’ visits to a hospitality business’s virtual property in the metaverse affect their intentions to visit the physical property in the real world?

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the general learning model and social cognitive theory, this research hypothesizes the positive impact of metaverse experiences on customers’ visit intentions and explores two boundary conditions for positive impact: user–avatar resemblance and servicescape similarity. Two experimental studies were conducted.

Findings

Metaverse experience has a significant impact on customers’ visit intentions, and this impact is moderated by user–avatar resemblance and servicescape similarity.

Research limitations/implications

This research addresses the call for empirical studies regarding the effects of metaverse experience on people’s behavioral intentions.

Originality/value

As one of the earliest empirical studies on the marketing effects of the metaverse, this research provides a basis for future metaverse studies in the hospitality field.

Abstract

Purpose

This study presents a bibliometric analysis of hospitality and tourism literature related to the COVID-19 pandemic, categorizing the pandemic into five phases: inception, growth, maturity, endemic and new normal.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the Web of Science database, 2,485 publications from Q1 and Q2 journals of the SCImago Journal and Country Rank, published from January 2020 to July 2024, were analyzed. Advanced bibliometric techniques, including co-word analysis and structural topic modeling, were employed to trace research trends and theoretical frameworks.

Findings

The study identifies key publications, authors and affiliations. It also highlights evolving research themes across different pandemic phases. The analysis reveals a dynamic shift from immediate impacts to recovery, resilience and sustainability. The study also discusses the diverse theoretical approaches used to understand pandemic-related behaviors, emphasizing the importance of health and risk theories.

Practical implications

Findings point to ways in which businesses may adapt and diversify their business models to be more resilient to future health-related crises. The findings further emphasize the importance of promoting sustainable and responsible tourism practices, as well as supporting employee well-being.

Originality/value

The findings offer valuable insights for future research and practical implications for the hospitality and tourism sectors in preparing for potential future pandemics by reviewing the entire progress of the pandemic.

This study, a systematic literature review, aims to review the state-of-the-art literature on choice overload from 2000 to 2023.

Abstract

Purpose

This study, a systematic literature review, aims to review the state-of-the-art literature on choice overload from 2000 to 2023.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews 53 research articles published in peer-reviewed journals, using thematic and descriptive analyses. The literature was selected using the PRISMA framework.

Findings

Recent research in consumer behaviour has found that too many choices can be detrimental to decision-making. This paper reviews the development of choice overload literature, methodologies used by researchers to study choice overload, small and large choice sets, antecedents, moderators and outcomes of choice overload and the contexts in which choice overload exists.

Research limitations/implications

Limited literature coverage because of the strict adherence to inclusion/exclusion criteria. The theory challenges the conventional choice models in psychology and economics according to which expanding a choice set cannot make decision-making worse and violates the regularity axiom, a cornerstone of classical choice theory. This review also identifies avenues for further research in the field.

Practical implications

A significant decrease in satisfaction or motivation because of too many choices would require marketers and public policymakers to rethink their practice of providing ever-increasing assortments to choose from because they could possibly boost their success by offering less.

Originality/value

This systematic review makes distinctive contributions by classifying the existing studies based on evidence “for” and “against” the existence of choice overload. The review also combines cross-context insights on assortment sizes, moderators and methodological commonalities and gaps to understand the multi-faceted nature and contextual nuances of choice overload.
