Abstract
Purpose
Family businesses are on the rise and facing severe sustainability challenges. The overall purpose of this thesis is to examine the moderating role of technological resources in the relationship between marketing innovation and family business sustainability.
Design/methodology/approach
From a post-positivist perspective, this study utilized a quantitative approach and causal research design. 204 family businesses within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly were sampled for this study. Structural Equation Modeling (SMART PLS 4) was utilized for data analysis after a closed-ended questionnaire was used to gather data.
Findings
It was evidenced that marketing innovation has a positive significant effect on family business sustainability. Technological resources have a negative significant moderating effect on the relationship between marketing innovation and family business sustainability.
Originality/value
The originality of this study lies in examining the moderating effect of technological resources on the relationship between marketing innovation and family business sustainability in Ghana, where this phenomenon is less explored.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the relationship between leadership style and job performance by multiple mediating roles of career satisfaction and job satisfaction using the longitudinal approach for frontline employees in the Jordanian hotel sector.
Design/methodology/approach
This study used a survey questionnaire based on a five-year longitudinal approach. Data were collected in two-period among frontline employees in five-star hotels in Jordan. Leadership style (transformational leadership and transactional leadership) was measured in the first period, whereas job performance, career satisfaction and job satisfaction were measured in the second period. The final sample for the first and second periods comprised 314 questionnaires valid for more analysis. The statistical software of SPSS (version 25) and SmartPLS (version 3.3.5) have been used for data analysis.
Findings
The results demonstrated that leadership style (transformational leadership and transactional leadership) has a positive significant effect on job performance. The results demonstrated also that leadership style (transformational leadership and transactional leadership) has a positive significant effect on career satisfaction and job satisfaction. As well the results demonstrated that career satisfaction and job satisfaction have a positive significant effect on job performance. Regarding multiple mediating roles, the results demonstrated that career satisfaction and job satisfaction mediated the relationship between leadership style and job performance.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study of its kind to examine the relationship between leadership style and job performance by multiple mediating roles of career satisfaction and job satisfaction using the longitudinal approach among frontline employees in the hotel sector.

Abstract
Purpose
The extant literature on work–life balance (WLB) has generally overlooked the interrelationship between leadership and WLB. Does leadership have any impact on employees' use of WLB policies and practices? To answer this question, this article considers the social exchange theory as well as transformational and transactional leadership in an investigation of the impact of leadership on WLB.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employs qualitative data from 32 semi-structured interviews to achieve the study’s objectives.
Findings
The research reveals that leadership does matter in WLB. The study findings reveal that both the transactional and transformational leadership styles result in the establishment of strong reciprocal relationships between leaders and employees in terms of using WLB policies and practices. Managers only sanction the use of WLB policies and practices only as a reward for excellent performance or when they are completely sure the outcome will favour the organisation. The study concludes that the desire to achieve WLB has often led many employees to go the extra mile in carrying out their work duties, which is rewarded with an approval to use WLB policies and practices. These non-contractual exchanges emphasise reciprocity and are based on trust.
Research limitations/implications
The extent to which the findings of this research can be generalised is constrained by the size and nature of the research sample.
Practical implications
Many managers are transactional leaders, and they purposefully allow their employees to use WLB policies and practices only as a reward for meeting targets and for excellent performance. This means that employees who fall short of the required targets and expected performance are not permitted to use WLB policies and practices. This finding implies that such employees experience incessant work–family conflict, which may have negative implications for their work engagement, overall well-being and work performance.
Originality/value
This study demonstrates that leadership is relevant to WLB. It shows that transformational leadership is supportive of WLB, as it considers employees' work performance and non-work outcomes. The results and practical implications of this study aids the understanding of the non-contractual exchanges involved in manager–employee relationships, which is crucial for ensuring employees' achievement of WLB and for organisations to achieve their goals.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose is to use co-citation analysis of servant leadership (SL) research to investigate the evolution of the field, its subfields, gaps and opportunities for future research in a systematic manner.
Design/methodology/approach
A document co-citation technique and three clustering algorithms (latent semantic index (LSI), the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) and the mutual information (MI) index) were employed to analyse 24,030 references from 549 articles spanning a period of 50 years.
Findings
Cluster analyses reveal that SL research consists of eight distinct subfields: (1) conceptualisation and measurement of SL; (2) SL and related theories; (3) methodological foundations and empirical expansion of SL research; (4) individual-level cognitive effects of SL and related theories; (5) “Warmth effects” of leadership behaviour; (6) antecedents of effective leadership; (7) SL, marketing, sales management and ethics and (8) SL, job design and work engagement. Important gaps and opportunities for future research are identified.
Research limitations/implications
The analyses do not show a complete picture of research on SL. Interesting works used by subgroups of SL researchers may not have enough citations to be included in the results. Moreover, bibliometric analyses do not explain the impact of books, journals and articles on the practice of SL. The authors welcome future analyses of the most influential sources of SL practice. The authors expect that managerial and practice-oriented books and journals, such as the International Journal of Servant Leadership and the Servant Leadership Theory and Practice, would play a central role in such analyses.
Practical implications
The discussions of the nature of SL, its effects and antecedents are useful to leaders who want to develop a SL style or assist others in developing it. For researchers and doctoral students, the cluster analyses of co-citations give an overview of the subfields of SL research and reveal important knowledge gaps in the literature.
Social implications
SL has several favourable effects on the motivation and psychological well-being of followers. Also, followers tend to adopt a willingness to serve.
Originality/value
Previous research has categorised SL research into three broad categories or phases. The cluster analyses of the co-citations reported here reveal a meaningful structure of eight distinct subfields. Knowledge gaps within the subfields represent novel opportunities for future research on SL. The authors also suggest a new subfield of SL research: pedagogical approaches to the motivation and development of SL skills.
