Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the intricate relationship among urban tourism, sustainability and the contributions of natural environments to the quality of life and convivial atmospheres in urban destinations. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive synthesis of existing knowledge, exploring the nuances of how natural environments impact the well-being of diverse demographic groups, both locals and visitors.

Design/methodology/approach

The study systematically reviews the literature using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) technique and uses the Scopus database. The search strategy incorporates key terms related to urban tourism, sustainability, quality of life and natural environments.

Findings

The findings of the systematic literature review provide insights into the current landscape of urban tourism, sustainability and the role of natural environments. The paper synthesizes existing knowledge, identifying trends, challenges and opportunities in leveraging natural environments for sustainable urban tourism.

Research limitations/implications

Despite offering a thorough synthesis, this study has certain limitations. The scope is limited to articles published in English and available in the Scopus database, following the PRISMA guidelines. The implications of this research are significant, informing future studies and guiding urban tourism planning and policy development.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the existing literature by unraveling complexities in the interplay between natural environments, quality of life and convivial atmospheres in urban tourism. The emphasis on cross-cultural perspectives and the post-COVID-19 era adds originality, providing insights that can guide future research and practical applications in the field.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the asymmetric effects of tax revenue policies on the economic activity of Oman.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model and uses data from 1980 to 2022.

Findings

The findings confirmed that economic activity has a cointegrating relation with the positive and negative shocks of the tax revenue policy and selected macroeconomic variables. In addition, the long-run results show that positive changes in tax revenues have a positive significant effect on the economy, while negative shocks in tax revenues have a negative effect on the economy at the 5% significance level. The study concludes that a significant long-term asymmetric relationship exists between taxation policy changes through the revenue channel for the economy of Oman.

Originality/value

No previous study has specifically investigated the asymmetric impact of tax revenue policies on the economy of Oman, which is an oil-dependent country. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first attempt to explore this relationship with respect to the Omani economy, and it uses extensive time series data and employs various contemporary econometric techniques. Given Oman’s reliance on oil and gas revenues, which typically fund approximately 70% of the country’s annual budget through taxation on oil and gas sold, fluctuations in global oil prices directly influence country’s fiscal position. Thus, this study contributes to the literature by empirically confirming the asymmetries impact of fiscal (tax) policies on Oman’s economy. The implication of the results suggests that the government cut back on tax incentives and tax exemptions for local and foreign businesses. This move can foster economic growth and reduce the negative competition effect among investors and taxpayers, which may ultimately improve the country’s tax revenue.

Introduction: The government has taken many initiatives for the overall growth of India after liberalisation and remarkably performed to make India an emerging economy. Due to changes in macroeconomic conditions, investment in companys’ shares includes the possibility of bearing high risk, which cannot be eliminated but, to some extent, minimised. The persistence of risks motivates investors to invest in different available options of investment. Gearing measures, a company’s financial leverage, represent the risk afforded within the company’s capital structure.

Purpose: The research aims to identify the risk-return analysis of financial geared stocks of Nifty 50 companies in India, which have debt equity ratios of more than 1.

Methodology: Convenience and cluster sampling techniques were used to identify companies with debt equity ratios of more than 1. The considered time period is 2010–2019.

Findings: This research found capital structure ratios, debt equity ratio, and total debt ratio. The total equity ratio does not have any visible effect on any of the dependent variables, i.e., Return on equity (ROE), Return on Assets (ROA), Earnings per share (EPS), Return on capital employed (ROCE). It explains the impact of high-levered firms’ performance on profitability and functioning. The study highlights that highly geared companies do not significantly impact the ROA, proving Modigliani and Miller’s (1958) irrelevant theory.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing from stakeholder (ST) and social exchange theory (SET), the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between customer perceived ethicality (CPE), electronic word of mouth (eWOM), customer trust (CT) and customer loyalty (CL). Furthermore, this study aimed to understand the dual role of CPE and eWOM in obtaining CT and achieving CL.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a quantitative, cross-sectional research design, data were collected from face-to-face surveys, yielding 358 responses. The partial least square algorithm was used to test the proposed hypothesis.

Findings

The analysis revealed that CPE and eWOM positively affect CT and CL, and CT has a mediating effect on the association between CPE–CL and eWOM–CL. CT was also found to positively affect CL.

Practical implications

Hotel managers can prioritize ethical practices and leverage the power of eWOM to build trust and achieve loyalty. This integrated approach not only enhances customer satisfaction and retention but also creates a competitive advantage.

Originality/value

The novelty of this study lies in the investigation of the dual role played by CPE and eWOM as antecedents of CT and CL within the hotel industry. Finally, this study explains the drivers of CT and CL, thereby making a novel contribution to the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to empirically investigate the moderating role of corporate governance (CG) in the capital structure-performance relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis is based on top Business Today-500 companies and covers a time span of 10 years. The fixed effect panel regression model is used to examine the impact of CG mechanisms on the relationship between capital structure and firm performance.

Findings

The core findings of the study indicate significant positive moderating role of board independence, board size and family ownership on the relationship between leverage and performance.

Practical implications

The results enable the managers of Indian firms to comprehend the significance of CG framework while taking financing decisions. The findings encourage managers to raise debt funds in those firms that adhere to good governance norms.

Originality/value

Unlike extant studies that emphasize on the moderating impact of single CG variable in leverage-performance relationship, the current work comprehensively examines the role of many CG factors that moderate the relationship between capital structure and firm performance. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the present study is the first of its kind with respect to India.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and analyze the adoption of digital technologies in the banking industry and its impact on the rise of digital fraudulent activities, specifically focusing on online banking frauds. This paper aims to provide insights into the current technologies implemented by banks to secure their online banking systems and explores the methods used by cybercriminals to exploit security vulnerabilities in these systems.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to understand how digital technologies in banking can be secured against online fraud, this research conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) on digital banking, online banking fraud, and security measurements. The review encompasses a variety of sources from online databases such as Emerald Insight, Google Scholar, IEEE, JSTOR, Springer and Science Direct.

Findings

The key finding of the paper is that the adoption of digital technologies in the banking industry has led to a significant increase in digital fraudulent activities, particularly in the form of online banking frauds. This paper emphasizes that these frauds have become a global concern and have evolved into an industry where cybercriminals use sophisticated tools such as phishing attacks, denial-of-service attacks, Trojan horses, malware infections, identity theft and computer viruses.

Research limitations/implications

This study relies solely on a literature review without incorporating primary data or case studies; therefore, it might miss out on the firsthand experiences and perspectives of banks and cybersecurity professionals.

Practical implications

This study emphasizes the need for banks to adopt advanced security measures to safeguard their online banking systems.

Social implications

This study underscores the importance of ongoing training and awareness programs for both bank employees and customers.

Originality/value

This study specifically addresses the adoption of digital technologies in the banking industry and its correlation with the increase in digital fraudulent activities. This focus on the intersection of technology and fraud in the banking sector is a distinctive aspect. This study conducts a SLR to examine the current technologies implemented by banks to safeguard their online banking systems. This comprehensive approach provides insights into the diverse security measures used by banks to protect against various types of cyber threats.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the role of Virtual Reality (VR) in tourism marketing, analyzing its psychological effects, demographic differences and factors influencing adoption. It seeks to identify and measure the main drivers and obstacles to VR acceptance, improving predictions of adoption trends in tourism planning and experiences across various demographics.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a quantitative method, blending statistical analysis with Grey System Theory. It analyzes data from VR-experienced participants using ANOVA, regression models and dynamic grey relational analysis to produce actionable insights. Data were collected from July to September 2023 from participants experienced with VR in tourism.

Findings

User engagement, positive word-of-mouth and a desire for immersive experiences drive VR acceptance, especially among frequent travelers and tech enthusiasts. While VR can enhance trip enjoyment, its long-term impact varies. To increase VR adoption in tourism, strategies include targeting frequent travelers and online users, creating accessible and engaging content, leveraging positive feedback and partnering with influencers to develop interactive VR experiences that mitigate travel planning uncertainties and attract specific user groups.

Practical implications

The study demonstrates how VR can expand access to tourism for those unable to travel, enhance engagement and streamline planning. By leveraging VR in marketing, providers can create immersive, targeted content, reduce uncertainties, attract tech-savvy travelers and boost appeal through influencer partnerships.

Originality/value

This study pioneers the integration of Grey System Theory with traditional statistical methods to elucidate the dynamics of VR adoption in tourism. By uniquely combining ANOVA, regression models and dynamic grey relational analysis, it offers a precise model to interpret complex data, highlighting the nuanced effects of demographic factors on technology acceptance. This approach not only advances the analytical frameworks in tourism marketing but also provides critical insights into the demographic and psychological drivers of VR adoption.

Abstract

Purpose

The present research aims to examine the effect of parents, teachers, and peers on university students’ career intentions for STEM jobs and how these relationships are mediated by their career decision self-efficacy (CDSE).

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using standardised questionnaires administered to 523 final-year university students within STEM disciplines. Partial least squares path modelling (PLS-PM) via SmartPLS 3.0 was used to analyse the data.

Findings

The results of this study validate the assertions of social cognitive career theory (SCCT) by demonstrating that consistent information sharing and support from parents, teachers and peers significantly influence university students’ career intentions in STEM fields. Furthermore, the effect of parents, teachers and peers on university students’ STEM career intentions is mediated by their CDSE.

Practical implications

The findings of this study offer practical insights for education policymakers and human resource development practitioners while also providing valuable direction for future research in STEM education and career development.

Originality/value

This research has contributed to the literature on SCCT and career development, providing valuable insights into the impact of parents, peers, teachers and CDSE on fostering university students’ career intentions for STEM jobs, which have received scant attention from educational researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

The digital marketing landscape is rapidly evolving, but the integration of visual content still heavily depends on human expertise. Driven by the quest for innovative marketing strategies that resonate with family-oriented consumers, this study seeks to bridge this gap by applying machine learning to analyze visual content in the maternity and baby care product sector.

Design/methodology/approach

This study incorporates a range of machine learning techniques – including open science framework feature detection, panoptic segmentation, customized instance segmentation, and face detection calculation methods – to analyze and predict the appeal of images, thereby enhancing user engagement and parent-child intimacy.

Findings

The exploration of various ML models, such as DT, LightGBM, RIPPER algorithm, and CNNs, has offered a comparative analysis that addresses a methodological gap in the existing literature, which frequently depends on isolated model evaluations. According to our quadrant analysis with respect to engagement rate and parent-child intimacy, the selection of a model for real-world applications depends on balancing performance and interpretability.

Originality/value

The proposed system offers a series of actionable recommendations designed to enhance customer engagement and foster brand loyalty. This study contributes to image design in maternity and baby care marketing and provides analytical insights for recommendation systems.
