Abstract

Purpose

This study investigated drivers that explain qardhul hassan financing acceptance in Malaysia involving staff of two universities namely A in East Malaysia and B in West Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The attitude-social influence-self-efficacy (ASE) model was tested to examine 422 respondents’ acceptance using SPSS 27.

Findings

The study confirmed the significance of all tested hypotheses, with attitude playing a key mediating role. Further, this study uncovered significant results of relative advantage and Islamic debt collection policy, offering novel contributions to this discipline.

Research limitations/implications

The generalisation of the findings generated was limited to the context concerned and the limited variables tested.

Practical implications

The results offer a directive for universities to offer qardhul hassan in the future to attract demand and acceptance.

Originality/value

This study introduced a modified ASE called the QH-ASE framework to analyse its adoption, adaptability and impact on qardhul hassan financing usefulness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine asnafs’ acceptance of home financing in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

This work developed and introduced the maqasid theory of consumer behaviour (MTCB) to examine the effects of educational programmes, mortgage welfare, consumer justice and Islamic debt policy on receptiveness. Data analysis involving 733 respondents was conducted using partial least squares (PLS), where SmartPLS4.0 software comes into play.

Findings

In the core model, the effects of the MTCB’s variables helped shape the development of asnaf home financing acceptance.

Research limitations/implications

This study was based on quantitative data and geographical constraints.

Practical implications

The findings provide valuable inputs for the Joint Committee Body (JCB), combining Islamic banks and State Islamic Religious Councils to develop action plans for improving the facility offered.

Social implications

This work functioned as a social benchmark for improving Islamic home financing that includes asnafs’ homeownership.

Originality/value

A new conceptual framework for asnaf home financing drawn from MTCB is developed in the context of asnafs’ homeownership.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examined Muslim civil officers’ cash waqf giving decisions in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), the effects of the said factors on the decisions were examined using logistic analysis. A total of 583 Muslim civil officers were involved in this work. The discrete dependent variable measures whether a civil officer is a donor or non-donor cash waqf.

Findings

Results obtained indicate significant influences of attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control and some demographic items on cash waqf giving decisions in Malaysia.

Research limitations/implications

The findings attained were narrowed in terms of chosen geographical settings and the theory used.

Practical implications

This study provides a theoretical benchmark to enhance cash waqf giving decisions, which in turn can affect the waqf collection by the waqf institutions in Malaysia.

Originality/value

This study uniquely develops Muslim civil officers’ cash waqf giving decisions framework (CAGDEF) in measuring cash waqf giving decisions in Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to apply the theory of interpersonal behaviour (TIB) and its determinants to determine conventional enterprises' intentions toward halal supply chains (HSCs) adoption in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted with a judgmental sampling and over 150 responses were gathered. Besides, the literature on the factors that influence an enterprise’s adoption of a halal supply chain, and TIB is evaluated to determine the influential determinants that lead to conventional entrepreneurs’ desire to participate in the halal supply chain in Malaysia.

Findings

The study findings suggest that the intention to use a halal supply chain is determined not only by social factors, affect, facilitating conditions and attitude, but also by the added construct of perceived expected benefits.

Research limitations/implications

Considering this research to be limited in terms of coverage geographically and the theory rendered the context should be given proper attention when interpreting future outcomes. Furthermore, future researchers can extend the direct relationship by employing habit construct when conducting a longitudinal study.

Practical implications

This paper serves as a guide to ensure the best planning of halal supply chains in both theory and practice.

Originality/value

This study expands on the use of TIB in the context of conventional enterprises’ intention toward halal supply chains in Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the receptiveness of Islamic mental health financing schemes among parents with mental disorder children in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The innovation diffusion theory (IDT) was used to examine the factors influencing the receptiveness using empirical data from 323 respondents.

Findings

The IDT’s factors, namely, compatibility, relative advantage and simplicity were instrumental in determining the receptiveness.

Research limitations/implications

The usefulness of the results obtained was confined to the theory used as well as the geographical areas chosen.

Practical implications

The results obtained serve as a useful reference guide for Islamic banks in offering these schemes to parents with mental disorder children.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to test the effects of financial innovation drivers on the proposed Islamic mental health financing schemes in terms of their receptiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that influence business students’ adoption of e-learning systems by merging innovation diffusion theory (IDT) and the teaching for professional competence model (TPCM).

Design/methodology/approach

Snowball sampling was used to conduct the survey. In addition, 217 responses were obtained from students at private educational institutions. Similarly, literature on the determinants of e-learning adoption, TPCM, and IDT were reviewed to contribute to the factors that are instrumental in determining e-learning systems adoption.

Findings

The findings of the study show that e-learning systems adoption is influenced by factors such as online collaborative learning (OCL) and technology self-efficacy. Above all, the OCL variable was found to be influential in determining students’ adoption of e-learning systems platforms. On the contrary, perceived attributes such as perceived compatibility and perceived relative advantage were found not to be significant determinants of e-learning systems adoption.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributed not only to the theoretical extensions but also to practical implications, which would benefit the policymakers of higher education providers in terms of e-learning system adoption in the country.

Originality/value

IDT and TPCM models are evaluated alongside additional variables, namely, OCL and technology self-efficacy. As a result, this paper will serve as a useful reference guide for academicians, higher education administrators, and future researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examined the participation in mental health takaful schemes among young intellectuals in two public universities in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing from the Attitude-Social Influence-Self-Efficacy (ASE), this study evaluated the effects of attitude, social influence and self-efficacy on participation in mental health takaful schemes using an empirical investigation surveying 767 respondents who were identified as young intellectuals in Malaysia.

Findings

Evidently, the ASE factors shape the development of participation in mental health takaful schemes among young intellectuals.

Research limitations/implications

This study is confined in terms of the context and variables used – which limits its generalisation. Future studies should address these issues accordingly.

Practical implications

The results obtained can become a yardstick to gauge the participation of young intellectuals in mental health takaful in Malaysia.

Originality/value

This study introduced mental health takaful to the ASE, where young intellectuals are brought into play.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the determinants that influence acceptance towards e-wallet apps by extending the technology acceptance model (TAM) among (asnaf), a term used for charity or gift receivers from alms tax distribution institutions also known as donee.

Design/methodology/approach

The review of literature and structural equation modelling approach using judgemental sampling on extended TAM and determinants of e-wallet apps acceptance related to asnaf (donee) were conducted in a bid to contribute to the factors that are instrumental in determining acceptance of e-wallet services among asnaf.

Findings

The findings indicate that the e-wallet apps service acceptance is determined not only by perceived usefulness, consumer maqasid index and consumer innovativeness but also by subjective norms. On the contrary, consumer maqasid index and perceived ease of use do not lend themselves to be the factor of asnafs’ e-wallet acceptance. The authors extend the TAM model to determine the factors that may be influential in predicting the e-wallet app acceptance by asnaf.

Research limitations/implications

In assessing future outcomes when different sampling techniques are opted for and geographic coverage is expanded, this study should be considered in terms of the limited scope.

Practical implications

This study is intended to serve as a reference for making a significant contribution related to user acceptance factors related to alms tax-based e-wallet apps in asnafs’ context in Malaysia in terms of both theory and practice.

Originality/value

TAM is extended in the context of e-wallet app acceptance among asnafs’. A variable, namely, consumer innovativeness, is tested using the extended TAM model. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, consumer innovativeness in the context of asnafs’ acceptance of e-wallet apps is yet to be tested. Therefore, this paper will be a useful reference for policymakers, technologists, academicians and future researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to build a relationship between the quantitative and structural indicators of maqashid sharia studies produced from bibliometric analysis and the conceptual discussion developed through a thorough review of selected key literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses bibliometric analysis, collecting information drawn from 219 articles published in 68 journals during the period of 2006–2022. This study uses VOSviewer, RStudio, Microsoft Excel, and an examination of research time periods using the Scopus database to illustrate the citation analysis and keyword map. It is also strengthened by content analysis of selected studies.

Findings

The main research theme found in this study is the application of maqashid sharia in Islamic banks, with Islamic banks and Islamic finance among the most frequently used keywords. Meanwhile, the geographical spread of maqashid sharia research has reflected its universal acceptance, as it has spread across both Muslim-dominant and non-Muslim-dominant countries. Besides, maqashid sharia is found to be an extremely important subject for ensuring the ethical dimension of Islamic finance products and services, a more inclusive human development index, and contributing to the international agenda of Sustainable Development Goals. Lastly, future research is expected to broaden it into a multi-dimensional horizon, with several recommendations offered to enrich the understanding of maqashid sharia.

Practical implications

The findings of this study can be beneficial to multiple stakeholders in Islamic finance industry, including the management of Islamic banks, who can enhance the values of maqashid sharia in designing their products/services, and the regulators, who can formulate regulatory frameworks which are reflective of maqashid sharia principles.

Social implications

This study will assist future scholars in this field to formulate and design exciting research ideas and models to address the deficiencies found in the current implementation of maqashid sharia within Islamic finance industry.

Originality/value

The primary contribution of this study is to provide comprehensive review and discussion of selected significant literature on maqashid sharia and give direction for future research. In addition, this study also extends and incorporates the results of bibliometrics using the recent maqashid sharia studies published at the end of 2022.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influence the millennials’ intention to choose tawarruq home financing in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The primary data were gathered via the questionnaire survey administered among Islamic banking customers in Sandakan, Sabah. Data obtained were analysed via multiple regression analysis using the software, Statistical Package for Social Sciences.

Findings

This study found that attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, religiosity and knowledge in muamalat had a positive significant relationship towards millennials’ intention to choose tawarruq home financing in Sandakan, Sabah.

Research limitations/implications

This study used the sample size by inviting over 150 participants who filled the questionnaires and the area of coverage for the current study was limited to Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. Besides, the contributions of this study were confined to those factors examined in the research’s conceptual framework.

Practical implications

The results obtained through this study can help muamalat practitioners in providing the best practice of tawarruq home financing in the locality at best. In addition, this study also helps to guide managers of Islamic banks to plan better offers of the facility among local folks.

Originality/value

This study integrated religiosity and knowledge in muamalat in explaining millennials’ acceptance of tawarruq home financing in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia.
