Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate whether there is evidence that tailored provision for creative practice was spreading across disciplines in the UK during the period 2014–2020. In doing so, the author examined the potential and limitations of the archives of a national research assessment exercise as a source for understanding perceived priorities in doctoral provision during a period of recent history.

Design/methodology/approach

This study examined descriptions of doctoral provision in the research environment statements that formed part of the publicly available submissions to the, 2021 research excellence framework (REF). Aligning with meta-research and historical discourse analysis approaches, the study involved a close reading and critical analysis of a small sample of documents across four different disciplinary areas.

Findings

In creative disciplines, tailored support was identified for creative practice in practice research. There was a lack of discussion of such provision in other disciplines, including in education research where arts-based methods are used. This study demonstrates the limitations and challenges of using the REF archives to understand the history of doctoral provision. Only qualified interpretations can be made about actual institutional practice, revealing more about perspectives on the relative importance of different facets of doctoral provision.

Originality/value

The research is novel in investigating the potential of discipline level REF research environment statements as sources for research into discourse on doctoral education. In identifying evidence for tailored provision and the missing stories of this spreading to other disciplines, it challengesthe author to consider the support requirements for creative practice appropriate to the doctoral education contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

In this paper we ask: “What are the opportunities and challenges that creative methods pose in terms of conducting research processes with indigenous peoples impacted by emergencies and disasters?” To do that, we critically examine the creative and collaborative methodological approaches applied in the research project, Moving with Risk: Forced Displacement and Vulnerability in Colombia. This project sought to understand the trajectories of risk of families who were forcibly displaced as a result of the armed conflict in Colombia and resettled in areas at risk of disaster.

Design/methodology/approach

This article is intentionally written from the perspective of the researchers’ positionality. In doing so, we embrace writing that is situated and embodied in the researcher’s experiences and positionalities. This reflexive writing allows us to question the methodological experience of the research project we are analysing and, at the same time, ourselves, “the researchers” be questioned by it.

Findings

In this paper, we show how creative methods and participatory research can foster awareness and become the basis for inclusive and reciprocal research processes with indigenous communities in disaster studies. Specifically, we show that the use of creative methods helped us recognise that agency needs to be framed in collective spaces with the indigenous women we were working with and in relation to their livelihoods needs. We argue that finding spaces to conduct collaborative research and recognize agency is inextricably related to how the researchers reflect on their positionality.

Originality/value

This article contributes to critical perspectives in Disaster Studies and to an overall understanding of the role that creative methodologies play in research processes with people affected by disasters. It provides a novel perspective on the opportunities and challenges of applying arts-based methods in disaster risk studies with indigenous communities in Latin America.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce imagination workshops as a creative method for studying privacy from a sociomaterial perspective. The workshops incorporate a creative element – the imagination game – into a traditional focus group setting. The imagination game is a role-playing card game that involves participants imagining scenarios set in the future.

Design/methodology/approach

The imagination workshop method is illustrated through an empirical study exploring imaginaries of the future smart home. The study encompasses five workshops with a total of 46 participants.

Findings

The findings from the empirical application of the method highlight its strengths in uncovering thoughts and feelings related to human–data relations that might be difficult to attain through more conventional methods, such as affective responses to privacy dilemmas. By combining imagination and collaborative activity, less taken-for-granted ideas can be tapped into.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to consumer research by introducing a novel qualitative method for studying privacy. By drawing from a new materialism perspective, the imagination workshops bring to light the sociomaterial dimensions of privacy that extend beyond mere cognitive decision-making processes. In this way, the method can be applied to reveal the dynamic and visceral nature of the construct. In addition to privacy research, the method provides ample opportunities for application in diverse contexts interested in technological futures.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the integration of mandala thinking and multisensory techniques into advanced dessert design courses, investigating how these innovative pedagogical approaches enhance students’ creative and aesthetic skills. The research seeks to address the evolving needs of higher education in the face of technological and pedagogical disruptions.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs a mixed-method approach, including a detailed literature review, implementation of mandala thinking and multisensory methods in the course curriculum and quantitative analysis of student outcomes. Data were collected through pre- and post-course assessments, focusing on students’ creativity and aesthetic competencies.

Findings

The integration of mandala thinking and multisensory design principles significantly improved students’ creative and aesthetic skills. The findings demonstrate that these methods effectively enhance the educational experience in culinary arts, offering a novel approach to curriculum design in higher education. The study highlights how these innovative techniques can address current pedagogical challenges and improve student engagement and performance.

Practical implications

Integrating mandala thinking and multisensory techniques can significantly enhance creativity and engagement in higher education, offering a practical model for modernizing pedagogical practices and addressing current educational challenges.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the field by applying mandala thinking and multisensory techniques to advanced dessert design, an area not extensively covered in existing literature. It provides a unique perspective on enhancing educational practices in the culinary arts, reflecting the broader trends of incorporating innovative pedagogical strategies in response to disruptive educational challenges.

Abstract

Purpose

Creativity is widely recognized as a key driver of innovation and competitive advantage in today’s dynamic business landscape. As organizations strive to foster a culture of innovation, it becomes imperative to understand the factors that enhance creativity among employees. This study aims to explore the role of employee empowerment in promoting creativity at the workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used empowerment measures to determine the impact of employee empowerment on employee creativity. Creativity was also measured based on constructs reviewed in literature. An online questionnaire survey was conducted among 170 faculty members of different private universities of Bangladesh. The sample was chosen based on a convenience method. The responses were analyzed using partial least square (PLS) approach with the help of software SmartPLS.

Findings

This study comes to the conclusion that employee empowerment plays a crucial role as a forerunner to creativity at work. The configuration process is mostly accelerated and facilitated by university officials.

Research limitations/implications

Because they are statistically significant in establishing a climate for employee creativity at work, it is necessary to empirically determine the percentage impact level of the constructs of employee engagement known as “Leadership and Organizational Culture” and “Internal and External Enhancement Factors.” In addition, employee engagement is not the sole element influencing creativity at work. This suggests the need to quantify the relative influence that employee engagement has on other workplace drivers of creativity and innovation.

Practical implications

This study will help university authorities to instill management development programs to enhance their understanding about employees’ different psychological needs and expectations. Moreover, university management can find ways to implement various teacher development programs to promote growth mindset among the teachers. Organizations can leverage these insights to design and implement strategies that empower employees, leading to a more innovative and adaptable workforce.

Social implications

The implications of this research extend beyond individual organizations to society as a whole, as fostering creativity has broader implications for economic growth, productivity and overall well-being. By nurturing employee empowerment, organizations can not only enhance their competitive advantage but also contribute to societal progress through the generation of novel ideas, products and services.

Originality/value

This study was conducted on the private university faculty members to understand how the empowerment works in imparting creativity. The context of this study was educational institutions in contrast to the commercial organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the application of arts-based research (ABR) methods in producing knowledge about the lived experiences of disasters, particularly focusing on the effects of flooding in an informal settlement in South Africa. It emphasizes the use of playdough sculpting as a tool for storytelling, aiming to address and reduce power imbalances between local participants and external researchers.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a qualitative approach, using playdough sculpting workshops conducted in the Quarry Road West informal settlement in Durban. These workshops were designed to capture the personal stories of individuals affected by the 2022 Durban floods. Data were collected through participant observation, photography and interviews, and were analyzed using a thematic framework to identify recurring patterns in the participants’ disaster experiences.

Findings

The research demonstrates that ABR methods, particularly playdough sculpting, effectively foster participatory engagement in disaster research. This method provided a platform for participants to describe their embodied experiences of the floods, addressing uneven epistemological power dynamics. It also highlighted the potential of ABR in facilitating the decolonization of disaster research by centering local narratives.

Originality/value

This study offers insights into the potential of ABR as a creative methodology in disaster research. It highlights how ABR can complement traditional research approaches by incorporating local perspectives and fostering more inclusive knowledge production in the context of disasters. The study also presents a ten-step guideline for applying playdough sculpting across various disciplines.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a case study from the master program management in nonprofit organizations at the University of Applied Sciences in Osnabrück, Germany and show how this case of innovative teaching helps to educate responsible managers for the world of tomorrow.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed a model of a think tank to create a surrounding for students to learn about models and theories such as systems thinking and social innovations and work with practical instruments like the business canvas and design thinking. The objective was for the students to work on solutions for societal challenges.

Findings

The main findings were twofold: First, it is clear that the objective of the case was met. The evaluation at the end of both iterations made it clear, that the result is important for the students and something that they can embrace as their own. Second, the students show intense problems with the freedom that they get. It is very interesting how students are primed to perform in the regulation given by professors. Once these frameworks are loosened, they seem lost.

Originality/value

The value lies in the creation of a model that can be used by multiple professors in very different management studies. Through the model students can be taught to solve societal problems.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present a model for detecting and predicting creative accounting in companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE).

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conduct this research in three stages. First, the authors review the literature to determine the dimensions, components, indicators and techniques of creative accounting. Second, the authors conduct semi-structured interviews with experts using the fuzzy Delphi technique to obtain screening and reach a consensus. Finally, the authors develop a model to predict creative accounting by classifying the financial statements of the sample companies into two groups based on the use or non-use of creative accounting techniques, measuring the indicators determined in the previous stage, running various machine learning algorithms and choosing the superior algorithm.

Findings

The results indicate the usefulness of accounting information for detecting and predicting creative accounting and the relevance of several financial attributes as important predictors. The results also indicate the superiority of extremely randomized trees over other algorithms in predicting creative accounting and suggest that the primary purpose of creative accounting in Iran is earnings management. Contrary to the political cost hypothesis, large Iranian companies use creative accounting to inflate profits.

Research limitations/implications

The present research also has several limitations that must be considered, and caution must be exercised in interpreting and generalizing the findings as specified in the revised manuscript.

Practical implications

This study’s implications are significant for policymakers, standard-setters and practitioners. By recognizing the detrimental effects of creative accounting on financial transparency within companies, policymakers can address existing gaps in accounting standards to minimize the potential for earnings manipulation. Consequently, strengthening internal and external mechanisms related to a firm’s financial performance becomes achievable. The study provides evidence of the need for audit firms to recognize the importance of creative accounting and consider creative accounting in their audit plans to prevent insufficient or even misleading disclosure by companies that extensively use creative accounting practices in their financial reporting. Moreover, knowledge of creative accounting techniques can help auditors assess audit and detection risks and serve as a valuable guide for reducing audit costs and improving audit quality.

Social implications

Given that creative accounting practices distort the true or real accounting results, curbing creative accounting practices reduces corporate failures and could lead to the reduction of job losses and other social consequences.

Originality/value

This study uses a unique database in Iran to determine a model for predicting creative accounting using a mixed-method methodology, qualitative and quantitative, to identify creative accounting techniques and run various machine learning algorithms.
