Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to elucidate the complex relationships among internship learning performance, problem-solving efficacy, and their determinants by simultaneously examining a key variable that may moderate these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

This study carried out its empirical examination by surveying graduate students at a prestigious university in Taiwan. The investigation selected two programs from the College of Management and another two from the College of Engineering within the university through a random sampling approach. The selection of research participants from the domains of management and engineering is well-suited to this study’s objectives, given the pronounced prevalence of internships in these fields. Of the 280 questionnaires, 234 usable questionnaires were finally collected for a response rate of 83.57%.

Findings

The findings of this study show that learning goal orientation and communication skill learning both represent critical motivations that directly dominate the growth of problem-solving efficacy to ultimately boost learning performance. At the same time, the positive moderation of learning climate suggests the learning climate as an accelerator for learning autonomy that boosts interns’ problem-solving efficacy more strongly.

Originality/value

This study presents an expansion of the social learning theory’s conventional focus on general self-efficacy beliefs by delving into the realm of internships as a unique research context to explore problem-solving efficacy as a distinct facet of self-efficacy. Within this context, the study integrates the mediating role of problem-solving efficacy into the learning dynamics of internships, where interns engage in both learning goal orientation and communication skill learning. By concentrating on the internship setting within the workplace, this study effectively bridges the domains of management education and vocational psychology, extending insights beyond the classroom to comprehensively grasp the impact of learning goal orientation and communication skill learning.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the impact of perceived human resource management practices on talent turnover intention, with work engagement mediating and self-efficacy moderating the relationship. It examines how employees' perceptions of pay satisfaction, empowerment, participation and communication are related to their turnover intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 283 valid questionnaires from UAE government employees were used for data analysis. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to examine the proposed hypothesis.

Findings

The results reveal that employees' perceptions of pay satisfaction, empowerment, participation and communication are significant contributors to work engagement. The findings further demonstrate that work engagement significantly negatively affects talent turnover intention and acts as a mediator between employees' perceptions of individual human resource management practices and talent turnover intention. However, the results contradict the hypothesis that self-efficacy moderates the association between work engagement and talent turnover intention.

Originality/value

This study focuses on the impact of perceived human resource management practices on talent turnover intention, an area that has received limited attention in literature. By focusing on perceived human resource management practices, this study illuminates employees' subjective experiences and how they perceive human resource management practices intended to reduce talent turnover intention. The inclusion of the mediating effect of work engagement offers a more profound understanding of how employees' perceptions of human resource management practices influence their turnover intentions. This comprehensive approach to understanding the interplay between these variables provides valuable insights for organizations seeking to improve their human resource management practices and talent turnover intention.

Abstract

Purpose

An integrative model that predicts users' stickiness to WeChat is built. In the proposed model, perceived value plays a dual mediating role in the causal pathway from users' immersive experiences of presence and flow to their engagement and stickiness. Furthermore, presence is treated as a bi-dimensional construct made up of spatial feelings and the sense of being in company, and users' engagement is conceived as cognitive, affective and behavioural contributions to WeChat's marketing functions.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors develop a measurement instrument and analyse data from a survey of 917 WeChat users. They use a hybrid partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) and neural network approach to confirm the reliability and validity of the measurement items and all the relationships between the constructs.

Findings

The paper provides robust evidence about the mediating influences of both utilitarian and hedonic value on users' engagement with the immersive experiences of presence and flow. An additional finding highlights the role of social norms in engagement and stickiness.

Originality/value

Rather than studying the effects of the immersive experiences of presence and flow from either a hedonic or a utilitarian perspective, the authors consider how immersive experiences shape both utilitarian and hedonic value, as well as their joint impact (along with that of social norms) on users' engagement and stickiness.
