Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to study the interaction effects between a rectangular supersonic jet with a flat wall computationally using wall length as a parameter. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of change in wall length on supersonic core length (SCL) reduction, jet deflection and jet decay behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

The design Mach number and aspect ratio at the rectangular exit were 1.8 and 2, respectively. To study the wall length effects on jet-wall interactions, wall length (Lw) was varied as 0.5Dh, 1Dh, 2Dh, 4Dh and 8Dh, where Dh was the hydraulic diameter of the nozzle exit. The flat wall with the matching width of the rectangular exit section of a supersonic nozzle was placed at the nozzle exit such that the supersonic jet grazed past the wall. The studies were carried out at over-expansion [nozzle pressure ratio (NPR) = 4], near optimum expansion (NPR = 6) and under-expansion (NPR = 8) levels.

Findings

Results indicated that significant reduction in wall-bounded SCL was noticed in the range of 0.5Dh Lw 1Dh for both over-expansion and under-expansion conditions. At Lw 4Dh, SCL got enhanced at NPR = 4 and 6 but had a negligible effect at NPR = 8.

Practical implications

Thrust vector control, noise reduction and easy take-off for high-speed aircraft.

Originality/value

The effect of change in flat wall length on interaction characteristics of a rectangular supersonic jet was not studied before in terms of SCL reduction and jet decay behavior.

International business research is showing an increasing interest in the link between international business and human rights. Despite extensive coverage of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability, the analysis and discussion of why multinational corporations include human rights in corporate reporting is still in its early stages. This chapter develops an analytical framework on corporate human rights reporting, with special emphasis on international business. The conceptual part of the framework draws on legitimacy theory, stakeholder theory and signalling theory. The analytical part distinguishes between factors inside the corporation and the external environment of business organisations operating internationally.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to prepare high corrosion-resistant chromium-free zinc-aluminum (Zn–Al) coatings reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nano-ZnO particle composites.

Design/methodology/approach

The morphology, composition and corrosion resistance of the coatings were analyzed by electrochemical tests, water contact angle tests, immersion tests, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometer and X-ray diffraction.

Findings

The composite coating with 0.3% MWCNTs and 0.5% nano-ZnO particles demonstrated both high shielding performance and cathodic protection performance, which was attributed to the porosity filling of MWCNTs and nano-ZnO particles together with the electrical connection of MWCNTs between the zinc and aluminum powders.

Originality/value

This work laid an experimental foundation for the preparation and corrosion mechanism of high corrosion-resistant chromium-free Zn–Al coating reinforced with MWCNTs and nano-ZnO particles.

Abstract

Purpose

Recently, the popularity of software has grown significantly in the market. Enhancement of software is needed to decrease the burden of getting high-quality and reliable software. To achieve this, the software is upgraded by adding new features to the previous version. Therefore, adding new features in the last version to be consistent with the earlier version is challenging. This paper aims to discuss the optimal software enhancement and customer growth model.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper discusses a model when new features are added to the software, and the customers' adoption of the software is presented as a customer growth model. An optimal control problem is introduced to maximize the profit obtained from the software system over the system's lifetime period. Total gain is calculated by the value generated from selling the software over the total expenditure during the software development process. The closed-form solution and some theoretical results are presented using the optimal control-theoretic approach. The theoretical results are supported by a numerical example.

Findings

This paper gives several substantive insights during sensitivity analysis and provides essential results. The results discussed here are compatible with the actual scenario and useful in software enhancement.

Originality/value

The authors have proposed a new feature growth and customer growth model to maximize the total profit using optimal control theory.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the design and optimization of landing gear buffers to improve the landing-phase comfort of civil aircraft.

Design/methodology/approach

The vibration comfort during the landing and taxiing phases is calculated and evaluated based on the flight-testing data for a type of civil aircraft. The calculation and evaluation are under the guidance of the vibration comfort standard of GB/T13441.1-2007 and related files. The authors establish here a rigid-flexible coupled multibody dynamics finite element model of one full-size aircraft. Furthermore, the authors also implement a dynamic simulation for the landing and taxiing processes. Also, an analysis of how the main parameters of the buffers affect the vibration comfort is presented. Finally, the optimization of the single-chamber and double-chamber buffers in the landing gear is performed considering vibration comfort.

Findings

The double-chamber buffer with optimized parameters in landing gear can improve the vibration comfort of the aircraft during the landing and taxiing phases. Moreover, the comfort index can be increased by 25.6% more than that of a single-chamber type.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study first investigates the evaluation methods and evaluation indexes on the aircraft vibration comfort, then further conducts the optimization of the parameters of landing gear buffer with different structures, so as to improve the comfort of aircraft passengers during landing process. Most of the current studies on aircraft landing gear have focused on the strength and safety of the landing gear, with very limited research on cabin vibration comfort during landing and subsequent taxiing because of the coupling of runway surface unevenness and airframe vibration.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to generate knowledge about assessment methods in blended business education, which have become increasingly important to establish sustainable assessment practices that support knowledge acquisition for undergraduate students in business administration at a Colombian university.

Design/methodology/approach

For the analysis, a two groups comparison was performed using a nonequivalent control group design with a sample of 420 students. As this study wants to find insights to improve the knowledge on assessment topics in marketing research (MR) education, it was focused on the students from the business administration program. This study also uses individual scores from the state test as prior cognitive scores and the high school classification provided by the National Ministry of Education in Colombia (2012).

Findings

It was found that the variables that best predict performance on the MR course examinations were the mathematics skills and reading comprehension scores on the state test. The study also showed a better performance of female students on both assessment methods. There were no significant differences between the assessment methods or among the high school levels.

Research limitations/implications

One of the limitations of this study is the limited number of items on the tests. Additionally, the authors recommend conducting an analysis of the differences between the testing items to provide a detailed explanation of students’ performance when comparing computer-based testing and paper-and-pencil testing.

Practical implications

Further design of teaching material and assessments online and offline, based on local and regional marketing problems, is suggested. As the current text and readings are more oriented to the English-speaking contexts, most of the problems presented are oriented to multinational companies and brands.

Social implications

Insights into the skills required for future jobs provide valuable guidance (World Economic Forum, 2020). Essential skills for emerging roles, like data scientists, can find robust support within the MR course. To further enrich in-class and online exercises with Excel and SPSS, Colombian educators can leverage data sets obtained from sources like the national statistics office and international market intelligence databases available through the university’s library, including Passport and Statista. Engaging with authentic data sets provides students with a more profound understanding of practical applications in MR.

Originality/value

This approach facilitates the identification of key variables, such as assessment and cognitive abilities in math and reading, which predict students’ knowledge acquisition in MR. It not only offers insights into the relevant factors influencing learning in MR but also provides valuable feedback. Additionally, it suggests potential avenues for future research in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a study on stability analysis of Jeffrey fluids in the presence of emergent chemical gradients within microbial systems of anisotropic porous media.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses an effective method that combines non-dimensionalization, normal mode analysis and linear stability analysis to examine the stability of Jeffrey fluids in the presence of emergent chemical gradients inside microbial systems in anisotropic porous media. The study focuses on determining critical values and understanding how temperature gradients, concentration gradients and chemical reactions influence the onset of bioconvection patterns. Mathematical transformations and analytical approaches are used to investigate the system’s complicated dynamics and the interaction of numerous characteristics that influence stability.

Findings

The analysis is performed using the Jeffrey-Darcy type and Boussinesq estimation. The process involves using non-dimensionalization, using the normal mode approach and conducting linear stability analysis to convert the field equations into ordinary differential equations. The conventional thermal Rayleigh Darcy number RDa,c is derived as a comprehensive function of various parameters, and it remains unaffected by the bio convection Lewis number Łe. Indeed, elevating the values of ζ and γ in the interval of 0 to 1 has been noted to expedite the formation of bioconvection patterns while concurrently expanding the dimensions of convective cells. The purpose of this investigation is to learn how the temperature gradient affects the concentration gradient and, in turn, the stability and initiation of bioconvection by taking the Soret effect into the equation. The results provide insightful understandings of the intricate dynamics of fluid systems affected by chemical and biological elements, providing possibilities for possible industrial and biological process applications. The findings illustrate that augmenting both microbe concentration and the bioconvection Péclet number results in an unstable system. In this study, the experimental Rayleigh number RDa,c was determined to be 4π2at the critical wave number ( δcˇ) of π.

Originality/value

The study’s novelty originated from its investigation of a novel and complicated system incorporating Jeffrey fluids, emergent chemical gradients and anisotropic porous media, as well as the use of mathematical and analytical approaches to explore the system’s stability and dynamics.

Purpose

Amidst unpredictable and turbulent periods, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, service organization’s responses are required to be innovative, adaptable and resilient. The purpose of this study is to explore the utilization of both reconfiguration and transformational strategies as instruments for cultivating resilience and advancing sustainability in service organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

The study examines a proposed resilience model using fuzzy logic. The research also used a semantic differential scale to capture nuanced and intricate attitudes. Finally, to augment the validity of the resilience model, a measurement scale was formulated using business mathematics and expert opinions.

Findings

Although investing in resilience training can help organizations gain control and maintain their operations in times of crisis, it may not directly help service organizations understand the external turmoil, seek available resources or create adaptive remedies. Conversely, high levels of reconfiguration and transformation management vigour empower a service organization’s revolutionary, malleable vision, organizational structure and decision-making processes, welcoming talented and innovative employees to enhance capabilities during crises.

Research limitations/implications

The resilience model bestows a comprehensive understanding of the pertinence of building resilience for service organizations identifying the antecedents that influence the adoption of these strategies and introduces a range of theoretical perspectives that empowers service organizations to conceptualize and plan for building resilience. The research guides service organizations to become more resilient to external shocks and adapt to changing circumstances by diversifying their offerings, optimizing their resources and adopting flexible work arrangements. The study elaborates on the enhancement of resilience, increasing innovation, improving efficiency and enhancing customer satisfaction for service organizations to remain competitive and contribute to positive social and economic outcomes through the adoption of both reconfiguration and transformational strategies.

Practical implications

The study also guides the service organizations to become more resilient to external shocks and adapt to changing circumstances by diversifying their offerings, optimizing their resources and adopting flexible work arrangements. Rapid innovation and business model innovation are essential components, enabling service organizations to foster a culture of innovation and remain competitive. In addition, the adoption can lead to improved financial performance, job creation and economic growth, contributing to positive social and economic impacts.

Social implications

The resilience model bestows a comprehensive understanding of the pertinence of building resilience for service organizations. Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims at developing an improved method, based on binary search algorithm (BSA) for the steady-state analysis of self-excited induction generators (SEIGs), which are increasingly used in wind energy electric conversion systems. The BSA is also compared with linear search algorithm (LSA) to bring out the merits of BSA over LSA.

Design/methodology/approach

All the parameters of SEIG, including the varying core loss of the machine, have been considered to ensure accuracy in the predetermined performance values of the set up. The nodal admittance method has been adopted to simplify the equivalent circuit of the generator and load. The logic and steps involved in the formulation of the complete procedure have been illustrated using elaborate flowcharts.

Findings

The proposed approach is validated by the experimental results, obtained on a three-phase 240 V, 5.0 A, 2.0 kW SEIG, which closely match with the corresponding predicted performance values. The analysis is shown to be easy to implement with reduced computation time.

Originality/value

A novel improved and simplified technique has been formulated for estimating the per unit frequency (a), magnetizing reactance (Xm) and core loss resistance (Rm) of the SEIG using the nodal admittance of its equivalent circuit. The accuracy of the predetermined performance is enhanced by considering the SEIG’s varying core loss. Only simple MATLAB programming has been used for adopting the algorithms.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to tackle the critical issue of detecting stock market manipulation, which undermines the integrity and stability of financial markets globally. Even enhanced with machine learning, traditional statistical methods often struggle to analyze high-frequency trading data effectively due to inherent noise and the limited availability of publicly known manipulation cases. This leads to poor model generalization and a tendency toward over-fitting. Focusing on China's securities market, our study introduces an innovative approach that employs deep learning-based high-frequency jump tests to overcome these challenges and to develop a more effective method for identifying manipulative activities.

Design/methodology/approach

We employed the “Jump Variation – Time-of-Day” (JV-TOD) non-parametric technique for jump tests on high-frequency data, coupled with the synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) algorithm for re-balancing sample data. Our approach trains a deep neural network (DNN) on refined data to enhance its ability to identify manipulation patterns accurately.

Findings

Our results show that the deep neural network model, calibrated with high-frequency price jump data, identifies manipulation behavior more specifically and accurately than traditional models. The model achieved an accuracy rate of 94.64%, an F1-score of 95.26% and a recall rate of 95.88%, significantly outperforming traditional models. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in mitigating over-fitting and improving the robustness of market manipulation detection.

Practical implications

The proposed model provides regulatory entities and financial institutions with a more efficient tool to monitor and counteract market manipulation, thereby improving market fairness and investor protection.

Originality/value

By integrating the JV-TOD jump test with deep learning, this study proposed a new approach to market manipulation detection. The innovation is in its capacity to detect subtle manipulation signals that traditional methods typically overlook. Our model, which is trained on jump test data enhanced by the SMOTE algorithm, excels at learning complex manipulation patterns. This enhances both detection accuracy and robustness. In contrast to existing methods that are challenged by the noisy and intricate nature of high-frequency data, our approach shows enhanced performance in identifying nuanced market manipulations, offering a more effective and reliable method for detecting market manipulation.
