Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the factors that influence the development of big data analytics capabilities (BDAC) in organizations, an area that has received limited attention in the academic literature.
Design/methodology/approach
Employing partial least squares structural equation modeling, this research scrutinizes the interconnections between various antecedents and BDAC. Notably, it examines the mediating roles of organizational culture (OC) and digital maturity (DM) in the nexus between managerial data orientation and BDAC.
Findings
Analysis indicates that OC and DM play crucial roles in enhancing the efficacy of managerial data orientation on BDAC. The sequential mediation by these factors underscores the importance of nurturing an appropriate OC and advancing DM to optimize the benefits of managerial data orientation towards BDAC.
Practical implications
The findings bear significant implications for organizational practice. They underscore the necessity of enhancing managerial analytical skills and commitment to digital transformation. Furthermore, the study highlights the critical need for aligning OC with strategic objectives and the digital context. The formulation of a cultural strategy that advocates for a data-driven mindset and champions digital initiatives is essential for fostering BDAC development, thereby bolstering organizational performance and competitiveness in the big data era.
Originality/value
This study enriches the body of literature by illuminating the overlooked antecedents of BDAC. It extends the discourse on the human-centric aspects of digital transformation, offering insights into how managerial data orientation can be effectively translated into improved BDAC. This innovative angle deepens our comprehension of the strategies through which organizations can leverage big data technology for value creation and informed decision-making, emphasizing the pivotal role of OC and the requisite digital competencies and resources.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the direct and combined impacts of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and conservative orientation (CO) on perceived business performance (PBP) of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) under strategic-hybrid orientation (SHO) theory.
Design/methodology/approach
The data collected from the SABI NEO international database has 90 companies in 13 medium-to-high and high-tech activity sectors. The authors used partial least squares structural equation modelling to test the research model.
Findings
Business strategies match a SHO that includes both orientations, i.e. EO and CO. Moreover, as expected, the authors found evidence that each orientation produces performance-related sign-opposite significant impacts. Finally, the hypothesis regarding the positive synergistic effect of both orientations (EO and CO) on PBP was also supported.
Research limitations/implications
One stems from the study’s cross-sectional nature, requiring a longitudinal approach. Another one resides in the absence of further examinations concerning multigroup analysis. Another restraint is the limitedness of data, focused on firms with med/high-tech intensity. For last, while the use of results in the initial stages of theory development can be beneficial, it is important to note that such results cannot be simply extrapolated or generalized to other industrial sectors without careful consideration of the contextual factors at play.
Social implications
This study humbly endeavours to contribute to the finality of SMEs’ more steady and prosperous existence concerning the consciousness of the need to improve labour stability and wage fairness, conditions such as requiring a continuous commitment.
Originality/value
In this study, the authors aimed to investigate the impact of SHO on SMEs’ PBP. To this end, the authors simultaneously used two different strategic orientations (SOs): EO, which is widely studied in the literature, and CO, which has been less researched. The authors also examined their synergistic effects on PBP. The authors’ approach is based on Venkatraman’s strategic orientation of business enterprises model and the comparative paradigm of SOs.

Purpose
This paper aims to emphasize the significance of integrating sustainable development (SD) content into higher education institutions (HEIs) curricula. The focus is on identifying areas of research demand related to SD in teaching and learning programmes.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a comprehensive approach, combining bibliometric analysis and an original survey instrument tool. The research involves HEIs staff engaged in both research and teaching roles across 36 countries worldwide.
Findings
The findings of the study shed light on the challenges and gaps in incorporating SD into HEIs curricula. Insights reveal that researchers focusing on SD within teaching and learning programmes face a notable obstacle in the form of congested timetables.
Research limitations/implications
While providing valuable insights, this research acknowledges study design and methodology limitations. These limitations should be considered when interpreting the findings and planning future research endeavours in SD in HEIs.
Practical implications
The paper underscores the practical implications of the findings, emphasising the need to address congested timetables as a significant obstacle to sustainability education efforts. The practical insights aim to guide educators and institutions in enhancing the incorporation of SD content in their teaching programmes.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper proposes an evaluation approach for analyzing excellence management practices at a regional level based on experts’ assessment.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the National Quality Foundation’s Management Excellence Model (MEG), 19 management excellence practices were identified and tailored for small- and medium-sized industries (SMIs). Data were collected through a survey with 25 experts who assessed these practices in the context of Brazilian manufacturing SMIs. The analysis utilized Fuzzy TOPSIS Class (FTC), and a sensitivity analysis was also conducted.
Findings
The proposed evaluation approach integrates a reference model for management excellence (MEG), an analysis method incorporating uncertainty (FTC), and results that enable decision-makers to make well-informed choices. Of the 19 practices assessed, 15 were classified as “unacceptable,” while four were rated as “regular,” and none as “expected.” Key challenges relate to practices in information security, knowledge, innovation and change management.
Research limitations/implications
The study’s primary limitation is the use of non-probabilistic sampling and its focus on the Brazilian context. However, the extensive knowledge and experience of the experts in manufacturing SMIs and the need for studies addressing specific regional contexts should be noted.
Practical implications
The findings reveal a significant gap between ideal management practices and the actual state of SMIs, especially in emerging markets.
Originality/value
This research introduces a novel approach that combines a reference model tailored for SMIs with a multicriteria decision-making method, offering valuable insights for decision-makers and guiding future research.

Abstract
Purpose
Building on the conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study aims to explore how overall justice climate (OJC) and cross-cultural psychological capital (CCPsyCap) help highly skilled expatriates develop creative behaviours despite disruptive global macro-events. This topic has not been extensively researched in the context of expatriation, especially amongst self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries.
Design/methodology/approach
The data were collected through a web-based questionnaire from 307 SIEs coming from the MENA region and working in different sectors of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The responses were analysed via partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).
Findings
Empirical evidence shows that no significant direct correlation exists between the OJC and the creativity of SIEs. However, the results demonstrate that this relationship was completely mediated by CCPsyCap.
Practical implications
The context of high uncertainty may limit individuals' cognitive abilities amongst individuals, in turn, reducing their level of creativity. In this regard, this study identifies the need for host organisations to develop fair human resource policies to enhance creative behaviours amongst SIEs in such a context. It also underlines the role of psychological resources as a coping mechanism that helps those expatriates cope with the diverse challenges of their international assignments.
Originality/value
This study offers new theoretical support for understanding how the combination of OJC and psychological resources constitutes a springboard for enhancing SIEs' creativity in a context of hardship. This study also advances the COR theory by adopting a “cross-level resources caravans” approach.

Abstract
In this chapter, the authors review the concept of sustainable entrepreneurship and how it has evolved with increasing concerns about the environmental and social impact of business firms. The authors offer a background to the emergence of sustainability issues in the field of entrepreneurship research, and review a number of influential approaches to entrepreneurship that in various combinations address the relationships between the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of business. The authors further suggest three levels at which entrepreneurs can understand and assess their approach to sustainable entrepreneurship, highlight how the issue of sustainable entrepreneurship applies equally to startups and already established corporations, and in the conclusions point toward the emergence of humane entrepreneurship as a critical posture for entrepreneurship in the 21st century.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to assess the suitability of Botschen et al.’s (2017) Brand-driven Identity Development of Places (BIDP) framework to support places in developing their brand-driven identity and offering sustainable tourism models.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper applies design science research (DSR) to evaluate the BIDP-framework. A qualitative methodology is used, bringing together findings from four different case studies and from existing academic literature to make relevant suggestions for the improvement of the framework.
Findings
The findings indicate that the BIDP-model represents a valid artifact for the development of a brand-driven place identity, but that there is room for improvement.
Originality/value
This paper adopts a DSR approach in a managerial context and shows its validity for evaluating a place branding framework. Moreover, it provides implications not only for managers directly involved in place branding, who can benefit from the model assessment and its suggestions for improvement, but also for tourists and local communities, who will take advantage of more sustainable branding models that better integrate the needs of local actors.

In recent years, many nations have accelerated efforts to increase public awareness on environment and reduce the negative impact of the climate change. The European Union (EU) has been one of the most active international actors in environmental protection, implementing policies focused on providing a sustainable future for its citizens and protecting natural resources. The European Green Deal (EGD) which is a comprehensive plan with the goal of making the EU a climate-neutral zone by 2050 includes strategies, policies, and measures in numerous sectors such as economy, energy, transportation, agriculture, and industry. The EGD's targets include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, increasing the share of renewable energy at least 42.5% within the EU by 2030, promoting circular economy, and encouraging the use of low-emission vehicles (European Commission, 2020a). The Deal is set to transform the European economy into a more sustainable and low-carbon economy and fight against climate change all around the Europe and partner countries. The EU is committed to provide financial support for the actions required to address the root causes of climate change and environmental issues. This chapter examines the initiatives adopted by the EU to mitigate environmental issues and the effects of climate change in the context of the EGD. The study's objective is to assess the EU's efforts to help bring about a more sustainable environment in which negative impacts of the climate change and the release of harmful gases are significantly reduced.
