Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the paper is to showcase the significant achievements of Egypt's scientists in the 20th century across various fields of study such as medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, math, geology, astronomy and engineering. The paper highlights the struggles and successes of these scientists, as well as the cultural, social and political factors that influenced their lives and work. The aim is to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and make their own contributions to society by presenting these scientists as role models for hard work and dedication. Ultimately, the paper seeks to promote the importance of science and its impact on society.
Design/methodology/approach
The purpose of this review is to present the scientific biographies of Egypt's most distinguished scientists, primarily in the field of Natural Sciences, in a balanced and comprehensive manner. The work is objective, honest and abstract, avoiding any bias or exaggeration. The author provides a clear and concise methodology, including a brief introduction to the scientist and their field of study, an explanation of their major contributions, the impact of their work on society, any challenges or obstacles faced during their career and their lasting legacy. Abstract
Purpose
Although organizational identification has been recognized as crucial for multinational enterprises, its configurations regarding innovation performance at the subsidiary level have hitherto received scant attention. Accordingly, the purpose of this research is to identify the types of configurations in which organizational identification in foreign-owned subsidiaries leads to high innovation performance.
Design/methodology/approach
We base our research on social identity theory and the neo-configurational perspective to test our framework using survey data collected from subsidiaries located in Thailand and Vietnam.
Findings
Our results provide evidence that organizational identification serves as a glue that binds strong inter- and intra-organizational network relationships to drive innovation performance. While we find some variation in that pattern between the two host countries, it appears overall that the conditions of expatriates in top management and the geographic distance between home and host country only play a peripheral role. We identify the “integrated innovation driver” and “distant local hub” as two subsidiary archetypes that show how organizational identity can drive high innovation performance in subsidiaries.
Originality/value
This study is one of the first to empirically investigate the main complementing factors in the context of organizational identification and innovation in foreign-owned subsidiaries, which have previously predominantly been investigated in isolation of each other.

Purpose
Human capital is acquired not only through formal education (e.g. general skills) but also through training at the workplace. Prior studies have ignored the role of government subsidies explicitly for on-the-job training, which may influence firm training decisions and firm innovation performance. Hence, the authors establish a comprehensive theoretical framework to consider these issues and fill these gaps.
Design/methodology/approach
Considering the Chinese manufacturing firms listed in the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange from 2010 to 2017, the authors investigate the influence of training investment on innovation performance by illustrating the role of human capital updating in enhancing firm innovation. The authors also explore serval mechanisms on how training investment influences innovation performance.
Findings
The authors propose that training investment promotes firm innovation performance, whereas government training subsidies negatively moderate this relationship. The authors also reveal how technicists' involvement and corporate culture mediate the relationship between training investment and innovation performance.
Practical implications
This study provides policy implications for stimulating firm innovation by improving learning and absorption ability, strengthening cultural identity and implementing system norms. Effective policies should be adopted to provide subsidies for on-the-job training of enterprises, particularly for firms with technical executives and firms in diversified life-cycle.
Originality/value
This work contributes to the literature on the role of on-the-job training in promoting firm innovation and reveals the crowding-out effect of subsidies. This study also shows the heterogeneous effects of training investment on firm innovation.
