Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the investigation was to research the best process of electroless nickel (EN) plating on AZ91D magnesium alloy and the performance of EN plating coating.
Design/methodology/approach
Through single factor test and orthogonal test, EN plating on AZ91D magnesium alloy was researched. The plating rate and porosity were analyzed. The coating appearance of EN plating coating and magnesium alloy substrate was evaluated. The electrochemical properties of EN plating coating and substrate were researched using electrochemical workstation, and their compositions and structure were examined using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.
Findings
The results made by combination of experimental and orthogonal test showed that the best formula of EN plating was 8.8 g·L−1 nickel ion, 25 g·L−1 lactic acid, 28 g·L−1 reducing agent, 1.8 ml·L−1 corrosion inhibitor, 1 mg·L−1 stabilizer, temperature at 85°C and pH value at 5.5. The plating was uniform, dense and with no cracks. The electrochemical tests showed that the corrosion resistance of EN plating was better than that of magnesium alloy substrate.
Originality/value
The results indicated that the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy improved markedly after EN plating at the best formula and the plating covered magnesium alloy completely.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to introduce the process flow of electroless nickel (EN) plating on carbon fiber surfaces, the effect of former processing on the properties of coating and the dynamics of the process.
Design/methodology/approach
The coated fibers were mounted in cold-setting epoxy resin, and transverse cross-section of the coated fibers were examined under an optical microscope to ascertain the thickness, uniformity and continuity of the coating over the fiber surface. The coating morphology was studied by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). This study also determined the activation energy and electrical properties of EN coated on carbon fibers.
Findings
Activation temperatures have a greater impact on the quality of EN. At a temperature of 80°C, the EN layer prepared was uniform and compact and fully coated the carbon fibers. The optimum components of the EN plating process is NiSO4: 28 g/L; NaH2PO2: 30 g/L; NaAc: 20 g/L; Na3C6H5O7:10 g/L; C4O6H2KNa: 2 g/L; (NH4)2SO4: 18 g/L; thiourea and lead acetate: trace; operating conditions: pH = 8.5, temperature: 70°C; time: 0.5 h). The activation energy of the EN plating on carbon fiber is 12 kJ/mol, and the electrical conductivity of nickel-plated carbon fiber in 80 mL of distilled water is 16.5 μs/cm.
Originality/value
This paper determined the optimum processing conditions and the activation energy of the EN plating on carbon fiber.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to prepare composite micro-arc oxide coatings with better wear resistance and corrosion resistance.
Design/methodology/approach
A nickel powder composite micro-arc oxide film was prepared on the surface of the magnesium alloy by the method of organically combining ultra-fine Ni powder with micro arc oxidation film layer. In this experiment, the changes in the corrosion resistance and microstructure of the composite film layer after adding Ni powder were studied, and the effect of the addition of glycerin on the corrosion resistance of the film layer was analyzed.
Findings
The results show that the ultra-fine nickel powder was successfully prepared by the liquid phase reduction method, and the micro-arc oxidation process was modified under the optimal addition amount. The surface of the micro-arc oxide film made of ultra-fine nickel powder was found by SEM to have smooth surfaces and few holes. According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the phase composition of the micro-arc oxide film layer was Mg, Ni, NiSiO4, MgNi (SiO4) and Mg2SiO4. According to the results of electrochemical tests, the corrosion resistance of the micro-arc oxidation composite film layer was improved after the addition of ultra-fine Ni powder, the corrosion current was greatly reduced and the impedance has been improved. And after adding glycerin, the surface of the film layer becomes denser, and the corrosion resistance of the micro-arc oxide film is significantly improved.
Originality/value
Through this experimental research, a micro-arc oxide coating of powder composite magnesium alloy was successfully prepared. The corrosion resistance of the micro-arc oxidation film layer has been improved, and certain functions had been given to the micro-arc oxidation composite film, which has increased the application field of magnesium alloys.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to obtain the environmental factor, which has the greatest effect on the corrosion rate of Q235 carbon steel under thin electrolyte layer, and to analyze the effect of this factor on the corrosion morphology, corrosion products and polarization process of Q235 carbon steel.
Design/methodology/approach
An electrochemical device, which can be used under thin electrolyte layer is designed to measure the corrosion current in different environments. Response surface methodology (RSM) is introduced to analyze the effect of environmental factors on corrosion rate. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique are used to analyze the results. The Tafel slopes of anode and cathode in different humidity and solution are calculated by least square method.
Findings
The three environmental factors are ranked according to importance, namely, humidity, temperature and chloride ion deposition rate. In a high humidity environment, the relative content of α-FeOOH in the corrosion product is high and the relative content of β-FeOOH is low. The higher the humidity, the lower the degree of anodic blockage, whereas the degree of cathodic blockage is independent of humidity. The above experiments confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of the device, indicating it can be used for the screening of corrosive environmental factors.
Originality/value
In this paper, an electrochemical device under thin film is designed, which can simulate atmospheric corrosion well. Subsequent SEM and XRD confirmed the reliability of the data measured by this device. The introduction of a scientific RSM can overcome the limitations of orthogonal experiments and more specifically and intuitively analyze the effects of environmental factors on corrosion rates.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to address a fractional order fuzzy PID (FOFPID) control approach for solving the problem of enhancing high precision tracking performance and robustness against to different reference trajectories of a 6-DOF Stewart Platform (SP) in joint space.
Design/methodology/approach
For the optimal design of the proposed control approach, tuning of the controller parameters including membership functions and input-output scaling factors along with the fractional order rate of error and fractional order integral of control signal is tuned with off-line by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. For achieving this off-line optimization in the simulation environment, very accurate dynamic model of SP which has more complicated dynamical characteristics is required. Therefore, the coupling dynamic model of multi-rigid-body system is developed by Lagrange-Euler approach. For completeness, the mathematical model of the actuators is established and integrated with the dynamic model of SP mechanical system to state electromechanical coupling dynamic model. To study the validness of the proposed FOFPID controller, using this accurate dynamic model of the SP, other published control approaches such as the PID control, FOPID control and fuzzy PID control are also optimized with PSO in simulation environment. To compare trajectory tracking performance and effectiveness of the tuned controllers, the real time validation trajectory tracking experiments are conducted using the experimental setup of the SP by applying the optimum parameters of the controllers. The credibility of the results obtained with the controllers tuned in simulation environment is examined using statistical analysis.
Findings
The experimental results clearly demonstrate that the proposed optimal FOFPID controller can improve the control performance and reduce reference trajectory tracking errors of the SP. Also, the proposed PSO optimized FOFPID control strategy outperforms other control schemes in terms of the different difficulty levels of the given trajectories.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, such a motion controller incorporating the fractional order approach to the fuzzy is first time applied in trajectory tracking control of SP.
