Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the occurrence and management of conflict in Chinese organizations, from an emic perspective. The authors provide an in-depth understanding of Chinese working adults’ lived experiences regarding workplace conflicts.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is a qualitative one, consisting of open-ended questionnaires administered to 55 Chinese nationals who worked in governmental, public or international organizations in China. A thematic analysis of the answers was conducted.
Findings
Chinese participants adopted a normative mental model that defined their preferred “way of doing” things. A skillful balance was expected in conflict management that incorporated integrated open communication and strategic silence. Chinese working adults emphasized maturity in the workplace and the recognition of shared goals.
Research limitations/implications
The online questionnaire format may have constrained participants’ responses. Also, the data were collected from various organizational contexts, but there were not enough participants from each type of organization so that comparisons between institutions could be made.
Practical implications
The results could help expatriate populations better prepare their lives abroad in China. Also, the findings could aid organizational or management consultants who work closely with Chinese partners.
Social implications
The findings enhance our understanding of how Chinese working adults deal with workplace conflicts and the circumstances in which conflicts arise in the workplace, which also reflected the social and cultural contexts of the Chinese workplace experience.
Originality/value
This study provides an alternative interpretation of workplace conflicts and their management in China that is anchored in the unique organizational and national cultural context. They constitute the base for future development of culture-based explanations of Chinese organizational conflict behaviors.

Abstract
Purpose
In this study, the dynamic characteristics of the water-lubricated rubber bearing considering asperity contact are numerically studied, including water-film stiffness and damping coefficients and plastic-elastic contact stiffness coefficient.
Design/methodology/approach
The Kogut-Etsion elastic-plastic contact model is applied to calculate the contact stiffness coefficient at the bearing-bush interface and the perturbed method is used to calculate the stiffness and damping coefficients of water-film. In addition, the rubber deformation is determined by the finite element method (FEM) during the simulation. Parametric studies are conducted to assess the effects of the radial clearance, rubber thickness and elastic modulus on the dynamic characteristic of water-lubricated rubber bearing.
Findings
Numerical results indicate that stiffness and damping coefficients of water film and the contact stiffness of asperity are increased with the decreasing of the radial clearance and the dynamic coefficients are less sensitive to the rubber thickness compared with the elastic modulus of rubber. Furthermore, due to the existed groove, a sudden change of the water film direct stiffness and damping coefficients is observed when the eccentricity ratio ranges from 0.6 to 1.0.
Originality/value
It is expected this study can provide more information to establish a dynamic equation of water-lubricated rubber bearings exposed to mixed lubrication conditions.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to design an open architecture of an interconnected communication system (ICS) for multi‐level electric power control centers (EPCC) based on Tele‐control Application Service Element (TASE.2), which possesses specialties of high performances, robustness, cost‐efficiency, quick‐restoration, and easy‐maintenance.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the hierarchy and structure of TASE.2, the overall architecture of the ICS for multi‐level EPCC is put forward at first. As the key devices in the system, the structures of the communication gateway (CG) and common interface are designed. Then, the logical procession flows in CG and the con modes, for both CG and IC are analyzed in detail. The web‐based software configuration of remote maintenance and fault diagnosis is discussed conceptually.
Findings
As a standardized, well‐developed, and efficient protocol, TASE.2 is considered to be the most suitable protocol to support the ICS for multi‐level EPCC.
Research limitations/implications
The performance of the ICS needs to be further simulated.
Practical implications
Practical architecture for ICS for multi‐level EPCC with robustness and cost‐efficient specialty is designed in principle, which is very useful for manufacturers to develop pilot devices or even products.
Originality/value
This paper proposes a new ICS scheme for multi‐level EPCC based on TASE.2 is proposed.

Abstract
The inclusion of esports as an official event in the Hangzhou Asian Games is an important step towards the institutionalisation of esports. The significance of this event marks that Asia once again takes a lead in the global esportisation. This chapter investigates a series of history events in the inclusion process of esports into the comprehensive Games in Asia using process sociology and actor network theory (ANT). This study will analyse the type characteristics of esports events in Hangzhou Asian Games, whilst examining how key stakeholders' interact and balance in the network composed of international sports organisations, host of the event, emerging esports organisations and esports game companies. The chapter also examines the functions of global game industrial economic geography, local cultural politics, esports geopolitics and Olympic values in esports sportization, aiming to reveal the implications of esports inclusion in the Asian Games on the debate of whether esports meets the criteria to be classified as a ‘sport’ and its enlightenment of digital strategy to the inclusion esports in the Olympics.

Purpose
This paper aims to explore various tensions related to the diffusion and reception of the New Qing History (NQH) in China, and more specifically, it aims at underlying a recurrent tension within the core of this debate, between a Global and a Nationalist historical narrative.
Design/methodology/approach
The author’s focus is to analyze various texts published in China between 2006 and 2018.
Findings
The author argues that the intensity of the current debate is partly related on the one hand, to the fact that NQH undermines various aspects of China’s Nationalist teleology and territorial claims and, on the other hand, to the basic difficulty of accepting the coexistence of various historical representations that are risking to weaken contemporary’s justifications of its rising schemes.
Originality/value
The text presents an original reading of some important issues raised by the NQH debate.

Abstract
Purpose
Agricultural weather index insurance (WII) has been introduced in pilot or experimental form in many countries. However, the effective demand for WII is often limited by the impact of the basis risk. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to propose a new type of double trigger product, named “supplement” type, to reduce basis risk and improve the performance of the standalone WII.
Design/methodology/approach
Two measures of performance are introduced by the certainty equivalent income of expected utility theory. Through the Monte Carlo experiments and empirical study, this paper compares the performance of three types of double trigger products.
Findings
The findings indicate that the supplement type can significantly improve the performance of the single weather index product. First, it covers the downside basis risk and the catastrophic basis risk when the standalone WII fails to do so, especially in case of extreme losses. Second, it is superior when the correlation between the weather index and the yield index is not so strong, and can further enhance the performance of insurance even when the weather index and the yield index are highly correlated, for which the standalone WII could perform well.
Originality/value
The supplement type double trigger product proposed in this paper as an enhancement version finds a more preferable way to improve the standalone WII with relative lower complexity.
