Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to indicate the increase in operational efficiency of the aircraft in frontline squadrons by implementation of effective condition-based predictive maintenance (CBPM) philosophy using data link data transfer in real-time operational environment.

Design/methodology/approach

Real-time data transfer from the aircraft to the maintenance hub using data link is used as the key feature behind achieving an increase in the operational efficiency.

Findings

Considerable amount of increase in the operational efficiency and decrease in down time could be achieved on utilization of real-time aircraft parameters in the decision-making process of CBPM.

Practical implications

Incorporation of this methodology in frontline operating environment would result in achieving maintenance optimization, thereby reducing the downtime of the aircraft.

Social implications

Helps in achieving performance optimization with comparatively reduced downtime.

Originality/value

Up to 20 per cent of reduction in downtime could be achieved if real-time data transfer using data link is used parameters in the decision-making process of CBPM.

Abstract

Purpose

The effect of increasing lip thickness (LT) and Mach number on subsonic co-flowing Jet (CFJ) decay at subsonic and correctly expanded sonic Mach numbers has been analysed experimentally and numerically in this study. This study aims to a critical LT below which mixing enhances and above which mixing inhibits.

Design/methodology/approach

LT is the distance, separating the primary nozzle and the secondary duct, present in the co-flowing nozzle. The CFJ with LT ranging from 2 mm to 150 mm at jet exit Mach numbers of 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 were studied in detail. The CFJ with 2 mm LT is used for comparison. Centreline total pressure decay, centreline static pressure decay and near field flow behaviour were analysed.

Findings

The result shows that the mixing enhances until a critical limit and a further increase in the LT does not show any variation in the jet mixing. Beyond this critical limit, the secondary jet has a detrimental effect on the primary jet, which deteriorates the process of mixing. The CFJ within the critical limit experiences a significantly higher mixing. The effect of the increase in the Mach number has marginal variation in the total pressure and significant variation in static pressure along the jet axis.

Practical implications

In this study, the velocity ratio (VR) is maintained constant and the bypass ratio (BR) was varied from low value to very high values for subsonic and correctly expanded sonic. Presently, commercial aircraft engine operates under these Mach numbers and low to ultra-high BR. Hence, the present study becomes essential.

Originality/value

This is the first effort to find the critical value of LT for a constant VR for a Mach number range of 0.6 to 1.0, compressible CFJ. The CFJs with constant VR of unity and varying LT, in these Mach number range, have not been studied in the past.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of mixing promotion and screech frequency of controlled elliptical supersonic jet.

Design/methodology/approach

Flow field characteristics of low-aspect-ratio elliptical jets are examined at over-expanded, under-expanded and correctly expanded conditions. The tabs are placed at elliptical jet exit along the major and minor axes.

Findings

The results show that the mixing done by the minor axis is superior to the tabs along major axis. At all pressure ratios, the content of jet noise and the frequency are high for the tabs along the major axis because of increase in the amplitude of screech frequency. Further the tabs along minor axis show a dominance of large-scale vertical structures. In under-expanded conditions, the shock cell shows the rapid change because of the presence of tabs. The tabs along minor axis are making the shock weaker, hence no evidence of axis switching.

Practical implications

To achieve the greater performance of jet, the authors need to reduce the potential core length of the issuing jet. This can be achieved by implementing different types of tabs at the exit of the nozzle.

Originality/value

The present paper represents the flow of controlled jet using inverted triangular tabs. By achieving the controlled jet flow, the performance of propulsion systems can be improved. This can be used in systems such as combustion chamber, missile’s noise reduction and thrust vector control.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of coaxial swirlers on acoustic emission and reduction of potential core length in jet engines.

Design/methodology/approach

The swirlers are introduced in the form of curved vanes with angles varied from 0° to 130°, corresponding to swirl numbers of 0–1.5. These swirlers are fixed in the annular chamber and tested at different nozzle pressure ratios of 2, 4 and 6.

Findings

The study finds that transonic tones exist for the nonswirl jet, creating an unfavorable effect. However, these screech tones are eliminated by introducing a swirl jet at the nozzle exit. Weak swirl shows a greater reduction in noise than strong swirl at subsonic conditions. In addition, the introduction of swirl jets at all pressure ratios significantly reduces jet noise and core length in supersonic conditions, mitigating the noise created by shockwaves and leading to screech tone-free jet mixing.

Originality/value

The paper provides valuable insights into the use of coaxial swirlers for noise reduction and core length reduction in jet engines, particularly in supersonic conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyse numerically and experimentally the effects of lip thickness (LT) and bypass ratio on co-flowing nozzle under subsonic and correctly expanded sonic jet decay at different Mach numbers.

Design/methodology/approach

Co-flowing jets from co-flowing nozzles of different LTs, 0.2, 1 and 1.5 Dp (where Dp is the primary nozzle exit diameter = 10 mm), with an annular gap of 10 mm at main jet exit Mach numbers 0.6 have been studied experimentally and the other cases have been performed numerically. The co-flowing jet with 2 mm LT was used for comparison.

Findings

Co-flowing jet axial pitot pressure decay, axial static pressure decay, axial velocity decay, radial velocity decay and streamline velocity contours were analyzed. The results illustrate that the mixing of the co-flowing jet with profound LT is prevalent to the co-flowing jet with 2 mm LT, at all Mach numbers of the current study. Also, the LT of the co-flowing jet has a strong impact on jet mixing. Co-flowing jets with 10 mm and 15 mm LT with a constant co-flow width of 10 mm experience a considerably advanced mixing than co-flowing jets with 2 mm LT and a co-flow width of 10 mm.

Practical implications

The application of bypassed co-flow jet is in turbofan engine operates efficiently in modern civil aircraft.

Originality/value

All subsonic jets are considered correctly expanded with negligible variation in axial static pressure. However, in the present study, static pressure along the centerline varies sinusoidally up to 9% and 12% above and below atmospheric pressure, respectively, for primary jet exit Mach number 1.0. The sinusoidal variation is less for primary jet exit Mach numbers 0.6 and 0.8 in static pressure decay.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to increase the jet mixing effectiveness of Mach 1.6 axisymmetric jet using semi-circular corrugated triangular tabs (Tabs A, B and C), in which the locations of the semi-circular corrugations are varied along the leaned sides of the triangular tabs.

Design/methodology/approach

The tabs are fixed at the exit of the nozzle facing each other 180° apart. To quantify the jet mixing effectiveness of the semi-circular corrugated tabs, Pitot pressure measurements were carried out for the cases of over-expansion, marginally over-expansion and under-expansion levels of Mach 1.6 jet, along the jet centerline and the jet spread, along and normal to the tab axis.

Findings

The results exhibit that the semi-circular corrugated Tab A augments the jet mixing when compared to Tabs B and C. This impact in jet mixing is strongly due to the small-scale vortices shed from the tabs and the mixed effect of the corrugation locations and expansion ratio. The maximum percentage reduction in core length is about 73.6 per cent for the jet with semi-circular corrugated Tab A at NPR 5, whereas it is 71.4 and 67.1 per cent for Tabs B and C, respectively.

Practical implications

The reduction in core length of the jet with minimum thrust loss is obtained by controlling the jet used with semi-circular corrugated triangular tabs of equal blockage ratio 5.12 per cent with respect to the nozzle exit diameter.

Originality/value

The locations of the semi-circular corrugations varied systematically at the equally leaned sides of the triangular tab ensure the novelty of this study.

Abstract

Purpose

The Purpose of this study to examine the magneto hydrodynamics (MHD) using the analytical and numerical tool. In recent years, MHD growing tremendously due to the presence of multidisciplinary application in solving the tedious problems in the viscous flow.

Design/methodology/approach

The flows between the parallel plates under the steady inclined magneto hydrodynamic force were studied under the presence of different hall current and pressure gradient. The system was designed with the Darcian porous medium subjected to the incompressible flow. To analyse the flow reactions through stationary parallel plates, the governing equations were used using the integral transformation.

Findings

The velocity of the flows depends on the Hall parameter. As the intensity of the magnetic field increases the velocity of the flow is affected significantly. On the other hand, the radiation parameters also affect the flow of any medium through the porous medium.

Practical implications

Implementation of the Laplace and Fourier transform increases the reliability of the obtained results and further decreases the uncertainty during the measurement of the velocity of the flow without any restraints.

Originality/value

From the evident results, it is clear that the proposed MHD model can be applied to several operations of the fluid dynamic models. Further, the application of this technique will decrease the uncertainty in the results compared to the conventional computational models and other finite element and difference approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to understand experimentally the mixing characteristics of a two-stream exhaust system with a supersonic Mach 1.5 primary jet that exits the rectangular C-D nozzle surrounded by a sonic secondary jet from a convergent rectangular nozzle by varying the aspect ratio (AR = 2 and 3) similar to those that can be available for future high-speed commercial aircraft.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper focuses on the experimental results of effects of AR at various expansion levels of jets issued/delivered from a central rectangular convergent-divergent nozzle of AR 2 and 3 surrounded by a coflow from a convergent rectangular sonic nozzle. The lip thickness of the primary nozzle is 2.2 mm. various nozzle pressure ratios (NPRs) ranging from 2, 3, 3.69 and 4 were chosen for pressure measurements.

Findings

For all the NPRs, AR 3 had a shorter core than AR 2. Also, AR 3 was found to decay faster in the transition and fully developed zones. The lateral plots show that the AR has an influence on the jet spread.

Originality/value

The structure of waves existing in the potential core of the rectangular coflow jet along with the major and minor axis planes was visualized by the shadowgraph technique.

Abstract

Purpose

Chemical reaction effects are added to the governing equation. This paper aims to get the solution by converting the partial differential equation into an ordinary differential equation and solve using a perturbation scheme and applying the boundary conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors discussed the chemical reaction effects of heat and mass transfer on megnato hydro dynamics free convective rotating flow of a visco-elastic incompressible electrically conducting fluid past a vertical porous plate through a porous medium with suction and heat source. The authors analyze the effect of time dependent fluctuating suction on a visco-elastic fluid flow.

Findings

Using variable parameters of the fluid, the velocity, temperature and concentration of the fluid are analyzed through graphs.

Originality/value

The velocity profile reduces by increasing the values of thermal Grashof number (Gr), mass Grashof number (Gc) and the magnetic parameter (M). On the other hand, the velocity profile gets increased by increasing the permeability parameter (K). The temperature profile decreases by raising the value of Prandtl number (Pr) and frequency of oscillation parameter (ω). However, the source parameter (S) has the opposite effect on the temperature profile. The concentration profile reduces in all points by raising the chemical reaction parameter Kl, Schmidt number Sc, frequency of oscillation ω and the time t.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents preliminary results of the modeling of a large autonomous quad-rotor airship, with flying wing shape. This airship is supposed to be a flexible body. This study promotes an entirely analytical methodology with some assumptions. In this study and as first assumption, the shape of the careen is supposed to be an elliptic cone. To retrieve the velocity potential shapes, this paper solved the Laplace’s equation by using the sphero-conal coordinates. This leads to the Lamé’s equations. The whole system equations governing the interaction of air–structure, including the boundary conditions, is solved in an analytical setting.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper opted for a modeling and determination of the added masses of a flexible airship by an analytical method illustrated by a comparison with a geometric method. This analytical method includes the study of complex functions which are the Lamé functions.

Findings

This paper provides an analytical way to estimate an aerodynamic phenomenon which acts on the airship and in particular on its envelope and known as the phenomenon of added masses or virtual masses, as well as the means of defining it and the calculation analytically for the case of the flexible airship.

Research limitations/implications

Considering that the calculation of the added masses is very difficult and the numerical methods increase the number of degrees of freedom, the analytical method established in this paper has become a solution of calculations of these virtual masses.

Practical implications

This paper includes an application for determining the added masses of a new generation MC500 airship.

Originality/value

This paper allows defining an analytical method which determines the added masses of an airship, which helps the automation engineer to develop a control strategy to stabilize this airship.
