Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibilities and the growth prospects of medical tourism in Greece, while particularly focusing on the dialysis process. Patients with end-stage renal failure have the right to any treatment deemed necessary during their journey to another city or country away from the place where their treatment normally takes place.
Design/methodology/approach
The survey has been conducted among 193 kidney disease patients that underwent extra-renal dialysis in two public and three private artificial kidney units in Thessaloniki. The study population consists of patients with end-stage chronic renal failure (CRF) that undergo dialysis. For the purpose of this study, quantitative research was carried out via a structured and anonymous questionnaire. The design and structure of the study were based upon questionnaires from two relevant questionnaires. The questionnaires were modified appropriately to respond to the subject in question. Finally, for the analysis of the data, the SPSS software has been used.
Findings
One of the most obvious results is that patients on dialysis treatment have limited both the frequency and the duration of their vacation. The 8.3% of patients that did not use to travel increased to 37.8%, whereas only 22.3% continue to travel 2–4 times a year. Patients that keep on going on vacation frequently claim that a break from the daily routine improves their quality of life. Most of the participants (up to 36.3%) claim they feel healthier, while 34.2% stated they experience a normal life when they escape their everyday life and travel far from home. The 69.9% claim that Greece has the potentials to be a popular medical tourism destination. However, a well-structured and government-financed assistance programme is absent. The processing of data has revealed a positive correlation between age and tourism behaviour. Additionally, according to the research results, younger patients tend to be better informed regarding medical tourism in comparison with older ones.
Social implications
Considering the patients to be potential travellers facilitates the development, realization and promotion of medical tourism.
Originality/value
This study attempts to investigate, for the first time, the tourism behaviour of chronic kidney disease patients. The study highlights a sensitive issue, patients’ right to treatment without geographical or distance-related obstacles.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the close relationship between the disciplines of law and health-care studies. This interrelation has become particularly evident during the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, when restrictive human rights provisions have been initiated by many states for the sake of public health. Research focuses on the notional proximity of the principle of proportionality and its health-care correlative: effectiveness. It also goes through the influence of acceptance rates for the application of restrictive measures.
Design/methodology/approach
Research focuses on interdisciplinary literature review, taking into consideration judicial decisions and data on acceptance rates of restrictive human rights measures in particular. Analysis goes in depth when two categories of restrictive human rights measures against the spread of the pandemic are examined in depth: restrictive measures to achieve social distancing and mandatory vaccination of professional groups.
Findings
Restrictive human rights measures for reasons of public health are strongly affected by the need for effective health-care systems. This argument is verified by judicial decision-making which relies to the necessity of health-care effectiveness to a great extent. The COVID-19 pandemic offers a laminate example of the two disciplines’ interrelation and how they infiltrate each other.
Research limitations/implications
Further implications for research point at the need to institutionalize a cooperative scheme between legal and health-care decision-making, given that this interrelation is strong.
Originality/value
The originality of this paper lies on the interdisciplinary approach between law and health-care studies. It explains how state policies during the pandemic were shaped based on the concepts of effectiveness and proportionality.

Abstract
Purpose
This survey aims to investigate the perceptions of clinical leaders in hospital care services in the context of the Greek public health system, to define the impact of internal service quality characteristics and learning organization dimensions on job satisfaction.
Design/methodology/approach
The sample comprised doctors – department heads of 123 clinical departments of basic medical specialties operating in 15 hospitals and was addressed by the use of a questionnaire specifically designed for the purposes of this research effort. The results were processed with the use of exploratory factor analysis and multiple linear regression was applied.
Findings
The research results revealed a positive impact of interactive internal service quality characteristics and learning organization dimensions, namely, empowerment and continuous learning, on job satisfaction in hospital care services.
Originality/value
This research effort focuses, for the first time, on clinical leadership perceptions in public hospital care services. The relationship between internal service quality, learning organization and job satisfaction, can be critical in all efforts attempting to improve clinical departments functionality, thus the results of this survey provide both researchers and public health policy makers with a useful tool for the design and implementation of such efforts.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this paper is to investigate the prescribing behavior and applied practices of doctors who are the heads of clinical departments in the National Health System in Greece. Moreover, this paper aims to evaluate a set of factors influencing them in this conduct through both their scientific and managerial status.
Design/methodology/approach
The sample consisted of 123 clinical department-heads in 15 hospitals and a questionnaire specifically designed for the purposes of this research effort was used. Prescribing criteria were divided into three categories: scientific, functional and behavioral. Demographic data were also included. The data were processed using SPSS17 statistical package. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) of the mean of the parameters identified was applied.
Findings
The survey assessed, revealed and evaluated the most important factors affecting the selection process of selecting pharmaceuticals on a department head level. Existing gaps in scientific information and rational management of procedure implementation were detected. Different perceptions of doctors-department heads towards prescribing criteria emanating from their previous experience on decision-making positions, age and hospital spatial characteristics (urban-provincial) were also highlighted.
Originality/value
The results of this survey provide both researchers and health policy makers with a better insight of the factors influencing prescribing behavior, and decision-making processes of doctors-department heads in the context of a Public Health Care System.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate clinical departments' performance per clinical sector in the context of the Greek public hospital care system.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate clinical departments' performance per clinical sector in the context of the Greek public hospital care system.
Design/methodology/approach
The sample consisted of 96 internal pathology and surgical clinical departments in 15 hospitals in Greece and their technical efficiency was assessed by the use of data envelopment analysis. The proposed model used the number of nursing staff, medical specialists and department beds, pharmaceutical expenditure and clinical leadership job satisfaction as inputs while the number of hospitalized patients was selected as an output. Clinical leadership job satisfaction was captured by the use of a specialized questionnaire. The methodology applied investigated variations in technical efficiency in the presence or absence of job satisfaction. The model proposed an efficiency improvement through the possible reduction of inputs (input oriented) variable returns to scale.
Findings
Processing the results revealed variations in the way clinical leadership job satisfaction affects efficiency assessments per clinical sector. The impact of job satisfaction is verified for the surgical sector and rejected marginally for the pathology sector. Applied methodology results proposed reductions in pharmaceutical expenditure, human resources and available beds. These are indications towards implementing rational economic and human resources management and productive factors development.
Originality/value
This research effort uses job satisfaction as a quantitative variable to assess efficiency, focusing on clinical efficiency per clinical sector. In all efforts to restrain health expenditure, measuring clinical department efficiency is critical for health policy makers.
