Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the determinants of attitude and adoption intention of Islamic banking among the potential customers in Pakistan. The conceptual framework is investigating the influence of salient beliefs (consisting of personal factors and external factors) and theory of planned behavior (TPB) construct, i.e. attitude and social influence on Islamic banking adoption intentions.
Design/methodology/approach
To realize the objective of the research, 500 questionnaires were distributed among the potential customers of Islamic banking in Pakistan. A purposive sampling technique was used; 375 questionnaires were returned, whereas only 300 were used for analysis. To test the model, structural equation modeling was conducted by using an algorithm and bootstrapping techniques, and the most important factor is identified through the importance performance map analysis model.
Findings
The findings of the research revealed that the attitude has immense importance. It is a strong determinant of Islamic banking adoption intention among potential customers. Second, it is fully mediating the relation of cost benefits, reputation and support for business and the adoption intentions of Islamic banking. However, attitude is partially mediating the relation of religious obligations, social influence and the criterion variable.
Research limitations/implications
This research is articulating literature by incorporating external and personal factors along with TPB’s constructs, i.e. attitude and social influence and tested the attitude as an intervening variable to explain the relation with adoption intention of Islamic banking. The unfolding results spring up a broad spectrum to policymakers and practitioners of Islamic banking by suggesting the push and pull strategies.
Originality/value
Numerous studies conducted to find the influencing factors of adoption intention of Islamic banking, but this research is identifying the determinant of attitude along with adoption intentions. This research is contributing to the existing research by taking reputation (brand image), cost benefits and government support along with religiosity, which is an important factor but is ignored in previous research. Theoretically, this research is contributing to the TPB by giving a scenario of salient beliefs along with attitude and social influence because beliefs play an important role in building the adoption intention of the subject.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to develop the modified risk calculator for the Pakistani population based on differences in perceived versus actual risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2-DM).
Design/methodology/approach
A cross-sectional study design was developed to assess the study sample of 296 individuals from the Pakistani population. The data was collected using a questionnaire divided into three parts: general health, the validated Risk Perception Survey for Developing Diabetes (RPS-DD) and actual T2-DM risk assessment.
Findings
The study findings showed that among the total participants, 70.27% reported a low perceived risk of developing T2-DM, whereas 29.72% reported a high perceived risk when considering their family history. Regarding actual risk, males showed a 59% higher likelihood of developing T2-DM than females, who have a 50% higher risk. The modified calculator includes physical activity, fatty food consumption, age 34–65 and over 65, depression and artificially sweetened beverages.
Research limitations/implications
This study experienced limited representativeness; many participants provided incomplete nutritional and knowledge information. It involved 296 individuals, mostly from one province and a few from other provinces of Pakistan. Therefore, the results can be generalized to the whole Pakistani population.
Practical implications
This study underscores the need for targeted interventions to enhance risk perception, inform preventive strategies and further investigate the interplay between perceived and actual risks in T2-DM in Pakistan.
Social implications
The outcomes of this study can help Pakistani individuals who perceive themselves at an elevated risk of developing T2-DM. There is a general awareness among the Pakistani population regarding T2-DM. In contrast to perceived risk, the data on actual risk reveals a significant disconnect.
Originality/value
In Pakistan, there is a lack of research on perceived versus actual risk factors for developing T2-DM. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that evaluates the actual risk factors of developing T2-DM based on culture and dietary diversity in Pakistan.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing on the conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study aims to examine the effects of servant leadership and despotic leadership on employees’ happiness at work (HAW) through job crafting.
Design/methodology/approach
To test the hypothesized relationships, the data were collected from 309 Pakistani employees. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data.
Findings
The findings showed that servant leadership is an optimal leadership style for creating employees’ HAW. In addition, job crafting was found to mediate the effects of servant leadership on employees’ broad-based positive attitudinal outcome (HAW). Moreover, results showed that despotic leadership negatively influences employees’ HAW through job crafting.
Originality/value
This study is novel as it investigates how newer forms of positive (servant) and negative (despotic) leadership styles influence employees’ multidimensional attitudinal outcome (HAW) via job crafting. By doing so, this research extends the nomological network of servant leadership, despotic leadership, job crafting and HAW.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate how despotic leadership affects employee well-being through bullying behavior. The study further investigates emotional intelligence as a conditional variable on the association between bullying behavior and employee well-being.
Design/methodology/approach
The data from 257 nurses and their immediate supervisors (dyads) were collected on convenience basis using a cross-sectional design. Further, structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data.
Findings
The study noted that despotic leadership negatively affects employee well-being. Specifically, despotic leaders were noted to trigger employees’ bullying behavior that ultimately diminish their well-being. The study noted emotional intelligence as a conditional variable such that individuals with high emotional intelligence are more likely to buffer the negative association between bullying behavior and employee well-being.
Research limitations/implications
This study highlights the importance of employee well-being and suggests the management focus on their leadership style. Further, the study suggests to Human Resource practitioners the importance of personality traits (emotional intelligence) at the time of recruitment, as it serves as a coping strategy to diminish employee well-being.
Originality/value
Drawing upon the conservation of resources, this study shed light on the mediating role of bullying behavior between negative leadership (despotic) and well-being. In addition, emotional intelligence has not been examined as a conditional variable between bullying behavior and employee well-being.

Abstract
Purpose
Building on conservation of resources theory and unfolding theory of turnover, this paper aims to propose a model of the effects of despotic leadership on employees’ job satisfaction and turnover intention in the hospitality industry. In this model, the authors theorize psychological distress to play an intervening role among the aforesaid linkages.
Design/methodology/approach
The data were collected in three-waves from 212 employees working in Palestinian restaurants. A covariance-based matrix in structural equation modeling was used to verify the proposed linkages in the study. A marker variable was used to control the common method bias.
Findings
The results showed that despotic leadership has a direct negative effect on job satisfaction and a positive indirect effect on turnover intentions. Besides, psychological distress showed to play significant mediating effects among the aforementioned relationships.
Practical implications
This study gives insights to the hospitality industry on how despotic leadership can be destructive and lead to negative consequences.
Originality/value
This study is unique, as it is the first study conducted on despotic leadership in a hospitality setting. The study responded to scholarly calls made to enrich the literature pertaining to despotic leadership and its outcomes.

Purpose
Blockchain technology has encouraged more transparent transactions process through decentralized protocols and has identified multi-dimensional benefits. However, value innovation–based blockchain for the particular industry requires further elaboration since there appears to be a vague understanding. Therefore, this study aims to provide a profound perspective of value innovation based blockchain, which has the potential to be applied in the halal industry.
Design/methodology/approach
This study developed a typology model that describes a profound understanding of blockchain adoption for value innovation. Empirical research was conducted using multiple case studies to justify the model. The case selection in this study was based on the halal industry in Indonesia. This study employed few sources to derive sufficient data through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and archival records. In particular, this study drew upon specific theories to elaborate on the blockchain-enable value innovation.
Findings
A blockchain is identified as having the opportunity to promote value innovation in the halal industry through its features. This study defines a typology model of value innovation-based blockchain for the halal industry that takes place on a particular spectrum. The model built in this study classifies blockchain adoption for the halal industry from specific dimensions: the degree of blockchain-based system complexity and the intensity of value innovation. Then, this study finds that these cases have different classifications and are evenly distributed in the quadrants of the model.
Originality/value
The typology model in this study can be a reference for decision-making when considering blockchain to leverage a value innovation in particular systems. Although blockchain technology can potentially be applied in vast areas, the decision-makers should understand that technology adoption should provide distinct values to its stakeholders, notably in multi-dimensional areas such as the halal industry. Thus, this study contributes significantly to blockchain technology usage for the halal industry.

Abstract
Purpose
The construction of infrastructure projects for extracting natural resources is vital to the economies of countries and the strategies of mining companies. Project performance success (PJPF) means achieving the planned scope, cost, schedule and quality. This study aims to analyze if PJPF is influenced by the team’s psychological empowerment (PEMP) and structural empowerment (SEMP), the project manager’s transformational leadership (TLD) and shared leadership (SLD) styles and the cultural power distance (CPDT). The study also examined the mediating roles of TLD and CPDT.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper tested its hypotheses through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling in AMOS. Data were collected using the online survey platform SurveyMonkey. Owners, contractors and consultants from 24 countries across the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia contributed a total of 222 responses. All participants were involved in construction projects owned by a mining company listed in the S&P 500.
Findings
PEMP has a positive impact on PJPF, SEMP and CPDT. PEMP fosters engaged and autonomous employees with agility and problem-solving skills. TLD mediates the relationship between PEMP and SLD. The results indicated that SEMP, TLD and SLD, on their own, do not directly contribute to project success. In contrast to prior studies, CPDT does not mediate the effects of PEMP on PJPF.
Originality/value
Although construction projects remain labor-intensive, research on measuring PEMP, SEMP, TLD, SLD and CPDT in this field is limited. This document is notable for incorporating the perspectives of owners, EPC contractors and consultants.

Healthcare workers are considered to be the most vulnerable to face mental health. Therefore, this paper aims to examine how negative leadership (despotic leadership) affects employees' psychological distress. Specifically, the authors investigated bullying behavior as mediating mechanism and hostile attribution bias as boundary condition that trigger psychological distress.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors collected data from 252 nurses and their immediate supervisors (as a coping strategy for common method bias) through “Google Forms” from various public and private hospitals.
Findings
The authors applied structural equation modeling and noted that despotic leadership positively affects employees' psychological distress through bullying behavior. In addition, hostile attribution bias is identified as an important factor in amplifying the effect of bullying behavior on psychological distress.
Research limitations/implications
The authors collected data from high-power distance culture where negative leadership is more prevalent as compared to low-power distance culture. Their findings suggest management to discourage self-centered leaders (despotic) and employees with negative personality traits (hostile attribution bias) as these affect their mental health.
Originality/value
Drawing upon conservation of resources theory, this study is the first of its kind that has investigated how and when despotic leadership affects employees' psychological distress. Abstract
Purpose
The objective of this investigation is to examine the correlation between green transformational leadership (GTL) and organizational green innovation (GI) by employing a mediation model. Drawing upon the social cognitive theory and natural resource-based view, the present study explores the role of green creativity (GC) as a mediating variable in the relationship between GTL and GI in the hotel industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The research was conducted in Italian luxury hotels to assess the efficacy of our conceptual framework among workers in the hospitality industry. The study utilized a three-wave 2-week time-lagged design (N = 303). In addition, the study also intends to apply the Partial Least Squares – Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and the fuzzy qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to have distinctive discernment into model rapport.
Findings
The results of the study indicate the linkage between GTL and GI. Furthermore, the study also found the partial mediation of GC of employees. The results show numerous combinations using fsQCA that can be utilized to increase green performance (GP).
Originality/value
The study helps the hotel industry maximize its performance by unravelling irregular relationships. Therefore, it contributes by explaining previously unexplored factors and elucidating causal recipes to build a higher GP base through GTL, GC and GI. The research findings hold significant implications for comprehending the effects of GTL on organizational GI as well as its influence on GP. The limitations of the study are discussed for avenues of future research.

Abstract
Purpose
Based on conservation of resources theory, the present study aims to investigate the negative leadership style (i.e. despotic leadership) and its influence on a key dimension of project success (i.e. project efficiency) directly and indirectly via employees’ job stress. Moreover, this study also aims to investigate the moderating role of resilience on the relationship between despotic leadership and employees’ job stress.
Design/methodology/approach
This study used a time-lagged design and collected data via purposive sampling technique from 342 information technology project employees. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25 and AMOS 24.
Findings
The findings are in line with the proposed relationship, as despotic leadership negatively influences project efficiency via employees’ job stress and resilience plays a vital role in mitigating the effects of despotic leadership on employees' job stress.
Practical implications
The findings of this study provide direction to information technology firms to develop strategies to decrease employees’ stress and increase project efficiency.
Originality/value
This study extends the literature on leadership and information technology projects by examining how despotic leadership influences project efficiency via employees’ job stress. Negative leadership exists in organizations but has not yet been empirically explored; this study finds that it increases subordinates’ stress level and ultimately influences project efficiency.
