Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is use to density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the molecular adsorption by PEDOT:PSS for different doping levels. DFT calculations are performed using the SIESTA code. In addition, the non-equilibrium Green’s function method is used within the TranSIESTA code to determine the quantum transport properties of molecular nanodevices.

Design/methodology/approach

Density functional theory (DFT) is used to investigate the molecular adsorption by PEDOT:PSS for different doping levels. DFT calculations are performed using the SIESTA code. In addition, the non-equilibrium Green’s function method is used within the TranSIESTA code to determine the quantum transport properties of molecular nanodevices.

Findings

Simulation results show very good sensitivity of Pd-doped PEDOT:PSS to ammonia, carbon dioxide and methane, so this structure cannot be used for simultaneous exposure to these gases. Silver-doped PEDOT:PSS structure provides a favorable sensitivity to ammonia in addition to exhibiting a better selectivity. If the experiment is repeated, the sensitivity is increased for a larger concentration of the applied gas. However, the sensitivity will decrease at a higher ratio than smaller concentrations of gas.

Originality/value

The advantages of the proposed sensor are its low-cost implementation and simple fabrication process compared to other sensors. Moreover, the proposed sensor exhibits appropriate sensitivity and repeatability at room temperature.

Abstract

Purpose

Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film as a gas sensor has a good stability and performance. The purpose of this paper is to compare the effect of depositing different metal layers in various structures on the gas sensing properties of ITO toward ethanol and carbon dioxide.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the authors have investigated the effect of depositing an ITO layer by Electron Beam Evaporation technique under, on top and in the middle of the metal layers. Surface morphology and the response of the fabricated sensors were compared and the changes in the response of the sensors to ethanol and carbon dioxide gases were studied at various gas concentrations and operating temperatures. The sensing mechanism and result of the other studies were also discussed.

Findings

Comparing various sensor structures reported in this study showed that the ITO nanorods which grow over distinct Ag nano-islands in the ITO/Ag structure has the highest response of 420 per cent to ethanol which is 6 times more than the single-layer ITO sensor. Further, gold nanoparticles on ITO nanorods in Au/ITO/Ag structure produce a very complex structure that exhibits the best response of 150 per cent to carbon dioxide which is 6.5 times more than the single-layer ITO sensor. The response and the recovery times were improved also.

Originality/value

Different ITO-metal gas sensor structures were studied and compared toward ethanol and carbon dioxide. Response enhancement and various surface changes through a series of experiments and analysis were discussed and compared to the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to assess the effect of different leadership types, the client's identity and auditors' self-confidence on auditors' impartiality.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is a descriptive-survey type, and the collected data are based on a predesigned questionnaire distributed in January 2020. The PLS software is used for data analysis, and the statistical population of this paper includes employed auditors in enlisted audit firms on the Official Association of Auditors. When the parameters were insignificant, the obtained probability from the model fitting was used for hypothesis testing, and the appropriateness of the model was assessed via the structural equations.

Findings

The results show a significant relationship between charismatic, transformational, participatory, delegating and bureaucratic leadership and auditors' impartiality. There is also an association between the client's identity and the auditor's impartiality. The client's identity mediates the relationship between transformational leadership and the auditor's impartiality. Moreover, there is a significant relationship between self-confidence and auditor's impartiality.

Originality/value

This paper enjoys an innovative method in the field of behavioural auditing. The effect of transformational leadership on auditor's impartiality with the mediatory role of the client's identity shows the in-depth client–auditor relationship has been taken for granted and not examined previously, so the results of this paper can lend a helping hand to audit firms to enhance the organisational performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the prevalence of general obesity (GO) and abdominal obesity (AO) in the north-west of Iran and investigate the association with food choices and socioeconomic status (SES).

Design/methodology/approach

In this cross-sectional study, 500 subjects aged ≥ 18 years were studied. Data on their basic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, dietary habits and physical activity were collected. The authors examined the association between GO and AO with SES and food choices using multiple logistic regression analysis.

Findings

The prevalence of GO and AO was 26.6 and 43.4%, respectively. A positive association was observed between age and GO (p for trend <0.001) and AO (p for trend 0.005) in both sexes. However, a negative correlation was detected between education and income with GO and AO (p for trend <0.001). Two or more servings of fruit consumption a day were associated with lower odds of obesity. It was observed that the odds of GO and AO decreased by three or more servings of daily fruit. The consumption of dairy products in two or more servings a day led to a reduction in odds of GO and AO. The consumption of five or more servings of legumes, beans and nuts a week was associated with lower odds of GO and AO.

Originality/value

Educational attainment, greater income and a higher intake of some specific food groups were associated with lower odds of obesity in the area. More population-based investigations are required to develop effective preventive strategies to control the status of being overweight and obesity in different regions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to minimize the cost and time of blood delivery in the whole blood supply chain network (BSCN) in disaster conditions. In other words, integrating all strategic, tactical and operational decisions of three levels of blood collection, processing and distribution leads to satisfying the demand at the right time.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes an integrated BSCN in disaster conditions to consider four categories of facilities, including temporary blood collection centers, field hospitals, main blood processing centers and medical centers, to optimize demand response time appropriately. The proposed model applies the location of all permanent and emergency facilities in three levels: blood collection, processing and distribution. Other essential decisions, including multipurpose facilities, emergency transportation, inventory and allocation, were also used in the model. The LP metric method is applied to solve the proposed bi-objective mathematical model for the BSCN.

Findings

The findings show that this model clarifies its efficiency in the total cost and blood delivery time reduction, which results in a low carbon transmission of the blood supply chain.

Originality/value

The researchers proposed an integrated BSCN in disaster conditions to minimize the cost and time of blood delivery. They considered multipurpose capabilities for facilities (e.g. field hospitals are responsible for the three purposes of blood collection, processing and distribution), and so locating permanent and emergency facilities at three levels of blood collection, processing and distribution, support facilities, emergency transportation and traffic on the route with pollution were used to present a new model.

Abstract

Purpose

Attitude determination and control subsystem (ADCS) is a vital part of earth observation satellites (EO-Satellites) that governs the satellite’s rotational motion and pointing. In designing such a complicated sub-system, many parameters including mission, system and performance requirements (PRs), as well as system design parameters (DPs), should be considered. Design cycles which prolong the time-duration and consequently increase the cost of the design process are due to the dependence of these parameters to each other. This paper aims to describe a rapid-sizing method based on the design for performance strategy, which could minimize the design cycles imposed by conventional methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed technique is an adaptation from that used in the aircraft industries for aircraft design and provides a ball-park figure with little engineering man-hours. The authors have shown how such a design technique could be generalized to cover the EO-satellites platform ADCS. The authors divided the system requirements into five categories, including maneuverability, agility, accuracy, stability and durability. These requirements have been formulated as functions of spatial resolution that is the highest level of EO-missions PRs. To size, the ADCS main components, parametric characteristics of the matching diagram were determined by means of the design drivers.

Findings

Integrating the design boundaries based on the PRs in critical phases of the mission allowed selecting the best point in the design space as the baseline design with only two iterations. The ADCS of an operational agile EO-satellite is sized using the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method can significantly reduce the complexity and time duration of the performance sizing process of ADCS in EO-satellites with an acceptable level of accuracy.

Originality/value

Rapid performance sizing of EO-satellites ADCS using matching diagram technique and consequently, a drastic reduction in design time via minimization of design cycles makes this study novel and represents a valuable contribution in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a new numerical approach based on the local weak form and the Petrov–Galerkin idea to numerically simulation of a predator–prey system with two-species, two chemicals and an additional chemotactic influence.

Design/methodology/approach

In the first proceeding, the space derivatives are discretized by using the direct meshless local Petrov–Galerkin method. This generates a nonlinear algebraic system of equations. The mentioned system is solved by using the Broyden’s method which this technique is not related to compute the Jacobian matrix.

Findings

This current work tries to bring forward a trustworthy and flexible numerical algorithm to simulate the system of predator–prey on the nonrectangular geometries.

Originality/value

The proposed numerical results confirm that the numerical procedure has acceptable results for the system of partial differential equations.

Abstract

Purpose

The low resistance against penetration of water, oxygen and the other corrosive ions through the paths of coating is one the most important problems. So, protective properties of coating such as polyester must be promoted. Recently, the use of nanoparticles in the matrix of polymer coating to increase their protection and mechanical properties has been prospering greatly. The purpose of this study is to improve the corrosion resistance of the polyester powder coating with ZnO nanoparticles. The ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized by hydrothermal method in a microwave. Using polyester – ZnO nanocomposite coating as powder – combining them by ball milling process and coating them by electrostatic process are innovative ideas and have not been used before it.

Design/methodology/approach

Polyester powder as the matrix and ZnO nanoparticles as reinforcing were combined in three different weight percentage (0.5, 1, 2 Wt.%), and they formed polymer nanocomposite by ball milling process. Then, the fabricated nanocomposite powder was applied to the surface of carbon steel using an electrostatic device, and then the coatings were cured in the furnace. The morphology of synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles was investigated by transmission electron microscope. Also, the morphology of polyester powder and fabricated coatings was studied by scanning electron microscope. The effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the corrosion resistance of coated samples were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test at various times (1-90 days) of immersion in 3.5 per cent NaCl electrolyte.

Findings

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results reveal that there are no obvious crack and defects in the nanocomposite coatings. In contrast, the pure polyester coatings having many cracks and pores in their structure. According to the EIS results, the corrosion resistance of nanocomposite coating compared to pure coating is higher. The value obtained from EIS test show that corrosion resistance for coating that contains 1 Wt.% nanoparticle was 32,150,000 (Ωcm2), which was six times bigger than that of pure coating. In addition to providing a barrier against diffusion of electrolyte, ZnO nanoparticles act as a corrosion inhibitor and, thus, increases the corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of coating containing 0.5 Wt.% nanoparticles was lower as compared to that of 1 Wt.% nanoparticles. The low content of nanoparticles caused partial covering of the porosity of coating which in turn leads to provide weaker barrier properties. The increase in quantity of nanoparticles from 1 to 2 Wt.% also caused a decrease in corrosion resistance which is attributed to the agglomeration of nanoparticles.

Originality/value

The results of this study indicated the significant effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the protective performance and corrosion resistance of the polyester powder coating. Evaluation of coating surface and interface with SEM technique revealed that nanocomposite coating compared with pure polyester coating provided a coating with lower number of pores and with higher quality. The EIS measurements represented that polymeric coating that contains nanoparticles compared to pure coating provides a better corrosion resistance. In addition to providing a barrier against diffusion of electrolyte, ZnO nanoparticles act as a corrosion inhibitor and thus increase the corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of coating containing 0.5 Wt.% nanoparticles was lower as compared to that containing 1Wt.% nanoparticles.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to design and implement a multimaterial system for printing multifunctional specimens suitable for various sectors, with a particular focus on biomedical applications such as addressing mandibular bone loss.

Design/methodology/approach

To enhance both the mechanical and biological properties of scaffolds, an automatic multimaterial setup using vat photopolymerization was developed. This setup features a linear system with two resin vats and one ultrasonic cleaning tank, facilitating the integration of diverse materials and structures to optimize scaffold composition. Such versatility allows for the simultaneous achievement of various characteristics in scaffold design.

Findings

The printed multimaterial scaffolds, featuring 20 Wt.% hydroxylapatite (HA) on the interior and poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) with 1 Wt.% graphene oxide (GO) on the exterior, exhibited favorable mechanical and biological properties at the optimum postcuring and heat-treatment time. Using an edited triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattice structure further enhanced these properties. Various multimaterial specimens were successfully printed and evaluated, showcasing the capability of the setup to ensure functionality, cleanliness and adequate interface bonding. Additionally, a novel Gyroid TPMS scaffold with a nominal porosity of 50% was developed and experimentally validated.

Originality/value

This study demonstrates the successful fabrication of multimaterial components with minimal contaminations and suitable mechanical and biological properties. By combining PLLA-HA and PLLA-GO, this innovative technique holds significant promise for enhancing the effectiveness of regenerative procedures, particularly in the realm of dentistry.
