Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to fill the research gap on digital twin technology and its broad applicability during construction by shedding light on its interaction with Building Information Modeling (BIM) from a construction project management perspective. It presented the true potential of the digital twins in the construction phase of the project lifecycle.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper employed a two-step methodology that included a comprehensive synthesis of the literature on digital twins through the construction management lens and a questionnaire survey to assess the impact of digital twin services brought to light on parallel BIM uses.

Findings

The paper provides validated applications and many advantages of the digital twin on construction project management. It suggests that the industry should take advantage of 10 digital twin services introduced to eliminate the low efficiency and lack of productivity that the construction industry is still facing.

Research limitations/implications

The paper is one of the rare and pioneering studies that addresses the interaction between the digital twin and BIM from a construction management perspective with a quantitative approach examining the reflection of academic publications on the industry and their reception among industry professionals.

Practical implications

The paper provides a meaningful definition for the industry by grounding the concept of digital twin in existing technologies and their practical applications. This provides a roadmap for managers to approach the problems and BIM limitations they need to overcome in their companies or projects with tailor-made solutions.

Originality/value

The paper is one of the pioneering quantitative studies that fulfills an identified need to investigate digital twin technology for construction management and its extensive applicability for quickly evolving construction sites.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of tourists' perceived value, satisfaction and behavioral intention on the development of Lipu Yi costume culture to promote the development of intangible cultural tourism and better construct a model of the influencing factors of Lipu Yi costumes in the development of intangible cultural heritage tourism.

Design/methodology/approach

The study site is the intangible cultural district of Panzhihua, Sichuan Province, China. This study examines the interrelationships between tourists' perceived value of experience, behavioral intention and satisfaction as the tourists relate to Lipu Yi costume and intangible cultural heritage tourism. A sample of 225 tourists who had visited Panzhihua at least once was selected for the study.

Findings

All seven of the survey's hypotheses were supported. Therefore, this study concludes that tourists' perceived value, satisfaction and behavioral intention directly affect the development of intangible cultural tourism and significantly positively impact the growth of Lipu Yi costumes culture. Descriptive analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) investigation methods were used.

Originality/value

This paper analyzes tourists' perceived value of Lipu costume culture and tourists' satisfaction and behavioral intention during the tourism process. This study provides a more in-depth understanding of the relationship between Lipu Yi costume and non-heritage tourism factors. Practical methods and approaches are sought to further develop Lipu Yi costume non-heritage tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to enhance the safety and comfort of tourists in scenic areas undergoing renovation and transformation by developing a comprehensive safety assessment model that takes into account both internal and external factors affecting tourist and construction safety.

Design/methodology/approach

The research employs a multi-level tourist-construction interaction safety assessment index system, which is constructed through a deep analysis of factors such as the construction environment, tourist behavior and safety signs. The study utilizes game theory in conjunction with three main objective and subjective weight distribution methods to determine the weights of the index system, ensuring the objectivity and effectiveness of the assessment results. The cloud model and cloud generator are applied for the language transformation of the indicators, leading to a comprehensive assessment of construction safety.

Findings

The survey results indicate that the safety risks of the case project are relatively high, with limited impact of time segments on safety risks, and the risk level during weekends is slightly higher than on weekdays, but the difference is not significant. Among the reviewed influencing factors, compliance with safety signs and the proportion of people crossing construction areas are the factors with the highest risk level, representing a large number of tourists ignoring safety guidance and forcibly crossing construction areas, facing construction dangers, posing a great challenge to safety management.

Originality/value

This study offers a novel methodological approach to safety risk assessment in similar environments, contributing to the field by improving the systematicness and scientific nature of safety management. It provides a scientific assessment tool for the safety management of tourists in scenic area renovation projects, aiming to achieve the dual objectives of tourist safety and construction efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to address the problem of low-temperature wave soldering in industry production with Sn-9Zn-2.5 Bi-1.5In alloys and develop qualified process parameters. Sn–Zn eutectic alloys are lead-free solders applied in consumer electronics due to their low melting point, high strength, and low cost. In the electronic assembly industry, Sn–Zn eutectic alloys have great potential for use.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper explored developing and implementing process parameters for low-temperature wave soldering of Sn–Zn alloys (SN-9ZN-2.5BI-1.5 In). A two-factor, three-level design of the experiments experiment was designed to simulate various conditions parameters encountered in Sn–Zn soldering, developed the nitrogen protection device of waving soldering and proposed the optimal process parameters to realize mass production of low-temperature wave soldering on Sn–Zn alloys.

Findings

The Sn-9Zn-2.5 Bi-1.5In alloy can overcome the Zn oxidation problem, achieve low-temperature wave soldering and meet IPC standards, but requires the development of nitrogen protection devices and the optimization of a series of process parameters. The design experiment reveals that preheating temperature, soldering temperature and flux affect failure phenomena. Finally, combined with the process test results, an effective method to support mass production.

Research limitations/implications

In term of overcome Zn’s oxidation characteristics, anti-oxidation wave welding device needs to be studied. Various process parameters need to be developed to achieve a welding process with lower temperature than that of lead solder(Sn–Pb) and lead-free SAC(Sn-0.3Ag-0.7Cu). The process window of Sn–Zn series alloy (Sn-9Zn-2.5 Bi-1.5In alloy) is narrow. A more stringent quality control chart is required to make mass production.

Practical implications

In this research, the soldering temperature of Sn-9Zn-2.5 Bi-1.5In is 5 °C and 25 °C lower than Sn–Pb and Sn-0.3Ag-0.7Cu(SAC0307). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this work was the first time to apply Sn–Zn solder alloy under actual production conditions on wave soldering, which was of great significance for the study of wave soldering of the same kind of solder alloy.

Social implications

Low-temperature wave soldering can supported green manufacturing widely, offering a new path to achieve carbon emissions for many factories and also combat to international climate change.

Originality/value

There are many research papers on Sn–Zn alloys, but methods of achieving low-temperature wave soldering to meet IPC standards are infrequent. Especially the process control method that can be mass-produced is more challenging. In addition, the metal storage is very high and the cost is relatively low, which is of great help to provide enterprise competitiveness and can also support the development of green manufacturing, which has a good role in promoting the broader development of the Sn–Zn series.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the impact of perceived information quality on customers' self-efficacy and knowledge and how these factors subsequently influence perceived value and intentions to participate and visit.

Design/methodology/approach

A video scenario was used to depict a co-creation dining experience, with participants recruited through self-selected convenience sampling. Data were collected from 472 participants who viewed a video showcasing co-creation dining in restaurants. Structural equation modeling was applied to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

Results indicate that perceived information quality significantly enhances customers' knowledge and confidence. Increased knowledge and self-efficacy lead to higher perceived value, which subsequently boosts customers' intentions to participate and visit. Additionally, knowledge and self-efficacy partially mediate the relationship between perceived information quality and perceived value.

Practical implications

This study applies framing and processing theories, highlighting how clear, engaging presentation enhances perception, comprehension and self-efficacy in the co-creation process. Practical recommendations for restaurants include developing instructional materials, staff training and tiered experiences to improve customer engagement.

Originality/value

This study provides new insights into the role of information quality in shaping customer perceptions and behaviors in co-creation dining experiences, highlighting the importance of knowledge and self-efficacy in enhancing perceived value and participation intentions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the direct nexus between board characteristics, corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure and the cost of equity capital (CEQ). This is done by using agency theory, stakeholder theory and signalling theory, followed by an investigation into the indirect mediation impact of CSR disclosure in the board characteristics-CEQ nexus. It intends to present new experimental evidence from Jordan’s developing economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The study’s target population was services companies registered on the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) between 2012 and 2020. As a result, the population and sampling of this study are represented by all services companies for whom complete data are available over the period, with a total of 43 services companies yielding 387 company-year observations. Data for our study were obtained from their annual disclosures and the ASE’s database.

Findings

The main findings demonstrated that board size, board gender variety and the number of board sessions positively affect CSR disclosure significantly. In addition, three board characteristics (i.e. board size, board independence and board gender variety) significantly negatively affect CEQ. Besides, CSR disclosure significantly negatively affects CEQ and it fully mediates the relationship between two board characteristics (i.e. board size and board gender variety) and CEQ, whereas it partially mediates the nexus between board independence, CEO/Chairman duality and the number of board sessions of board characteristics and CEQ.

Originality/value

This study varies from earlier studies, in that it builds a new research model by looking at the mediating role of CSR disclosure in the nexus among board characteristics and the CEQ.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims at assessing entrepreneurial business performance (EBP) from dynamic capability (DC) and technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework perspectives, taking support from crowdfunding.

Design/methodology/approach

With the inputs from the literature, supported by TOE framework and the dynamic capability view (DCV), a model has been proposed. This model has been tested by the factor-based partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique through a survey and quantifying the responses of 406 respondents on a five-point Likert scale has been used.

Findings

The study has found that crowdfunding support (CFS) has an effective influence on the improvement of EBP. Also, the DC supports to improve the EBP. Environmental dynamism (END) has also a critical role in impacting business performance.

Research limitations/implications

Crowdfunding involves investors who have a similar interest in the business, close friends, family members, venture capitalists, investment groups, etc. Thus, the proposed model can be used by these stakeholders for investment purposes as well as for improving EBP. This study is a cross sectional research work which has limitations. Moreover, the sample size of this project is limited and did not include global respondents, Thus, the findings of this study cannot be generalizable which is another limitation of this study.

Practical implications

Crowdfunding involves investors who have a similar interest in the business, such as close friends, family members, venture capitalists, investment groups, etc. Thus, the proposed model can be used by these stakeholders for investment purposes as well as for improving EBP. The study can help policymakers understand the importance of crowdfunding in promoting entrepreneurship activities in a region, which helps in the economic development of that region.

Originality/value

This research work enriches the extant literature in the fields of crowdfunding and investment, DC and entrepreneurship. Not many studies have dealt with the issues of CFS for the improvement of EBP. Hence, this study may be considered novel. Moreover, the proposed research framework related to crowdfunding possesses a high predictive power. This makes the study unique.

Abstract

Purpose

This study is a pioneering attempt to use the theory of social construction and foresight development to map out an Islamic venture capital (IVC) setup from the key stakeholders’ perspective. Using Prabhat Ranjan Sparker’s theory of social construction, 20 participants (including policymakers, investors, intellectuals and entrepreneurs) were involved in a foresight building workshop related to designing an IVC setup that adhered to Islamic principles and values.

Design/methodology/approach

Through the utilization of “future consciousness” tools (including the Polak game, futures triangle and scenario building), key components of an IVC setup were identified. This foresight building methodology not only enhanced the diversity of opinions and wide participation but also helped to examine various discourses and different stakeholder voices. Hence, a multi-stakeholder research approach, based on team presentations, group activities, collective reflections and paper-based simulations, was used. Participants were chosen using purposive sampling, where knowledge and experience about Islamic finance and entrepreneurship were the key selection criteria. A thematic approach was used for data analysis. This enabled summarization of data into organized information structures, which uncovered different perspectives and similar views related to a future IVC setup.

Findings

The main study findings revealed an outline of an IVC setup, which was based on seven main stages (i.e. submission of a business proposal for venture capital consideration, review of the proposal by experts, multi-stakeholder decision-making, agreement phase, resource allocation stage, value-sharing equation and impact realization). Another key outcome suggested that low IVC awareness needed addressing through online and offline communication with Muslim and non-Muslim communities.

Practical implications

The creation of an effective IVC setup, based on collective feedback from key stakeholders, should play a significant role in the socio-economic development of Islamic economies by providing financial, skills-based and emotional support to Muslim venture capital seekers.

Originality/value

In terms of study originality, this is an underdeveloped area limited to theories and propositions. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no study that has provided a blueprint for a future IVC setup in a fast-developing Islamic economy that is based on key stakeholders’ perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

China is experiencing an economic revolution focused on reducing carbon emissions (CEs). Various technological research and development (R&D) frameworks also hasten the growth of the digital economy, which then fuels this economic revolution. Nevertheless, several correlation uncertainties in China have been observed between R&D investment and CE reduction with green economic transformation. This phenomenon is attributed to insufficient spatial impact considerations.

Design/methodology/approach

Therefore, this article explored the spatial impacts of the digital economy and R&D expenditures regarding environmental quality using Chinese-related panel data between 2012 and 2021. This study uses the Moran I index to test whether there is a spatial relevance between regional carbon emissions in China and assess the digital economic advancement level using the entropy weight approach. In addition, this article analyzes the direct and indirect impacts following the partial differentiation approach, and then creates an interaction term between the digital economy and R&D investment to assess the moderating effect for examining the influence of investing in R&D on reducing CO2 levels of the digital economy.

Findings

A positive spatial relevance between the digital economy and CEs was then highlighted from the empirical findings. The digital economy expansion also demonstrated higher local CEs while negatively impacting nearby regions. Notably, the digital economy concurrently lowered and increased local CEs in the Eastern and Central zones, respectively. Overall, a larger R&D investment directly impacted the capacity of the digital economy in decreasing the carbon emission intensity (CEI) at a regional level. An accelerated digital economy expansion and lower CEI were recorded in the Eastern zone owing to more significant R&D investments.

Research limitations/implications

China has gradually shifted its focus from reducing CEs to implementing “dual control of carbon” to achieve the “dual carbon” target. Future studies should then involve additional studies concerning the impact mechanism and path selection related to “dual carbon control.”

Practical implications

Investment in R&D plays a key role in reducing carbon emissions from the digital economy. By fostering innovation and technological advances, R&D investment activities can create more energy-efficient digital infrastructures, develop sustainable practices and optimize resource use. In addition, these R&D investments can facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources, enhance data management systems to minimize waste and promote the adoption of green technologies by businesses and consumers. As the digital economy continues to evolve, prioritizing R&D in this area is critical to achieving long-term sustainable development goals and addressing the pressing challenges of climate change. Stakeholders across industries must therefore recognize the importance of investment in research and development as a strategic approach that not only drives economic growth but also ensures environmental stewardship in an increasingly digital world.

Social implications

Investments in research and development not only foster innovation and technological progress, but also promote sustainable practices, which can have significant environmental benefits. In addition, they have the potential to create new jobs, improve public health through better air quality and drive economic growth in a manner consistent with climate goals. As society becomes increasingly dependent on digital solutions, it is critical to harness the power of the digital economy to achieve a more sustainable and inclusive society.

Originality/value

Research development investment is critical to all aspects of regulation. Research on R&D investment can provide direction to local governments in formulating digital economy policies and can be beneficial to local governments in considering regional differences in resource availability. The research and technical innovation strategies in the policies for developing the digital economy can substantially expedite carbon neutrality achievement by 2060.

Abstract

Purpose

The role of intermediate urban centers (IUCs) (like towns/small cities/rural counties) between large cities and villages in leading urbanization has been increasingly highlighted. This article conceptually and empirically examines what types of industrial agglomeration (specialized or diversified agglomeration) of rural county in China would provide a more inclusive and efficient local labor market for rural workers to be inclusively urbanized.

Design/methodology/approach

We employ a three-stage labor supply model to theoretically generalize the decisions of rural workers to migrate to large city, to undertake nonfarm jobs in rural counties and the length of nonfarm jobs. Then, combining three national-level datasets of China (National Economic Census (NEC), China Household Income Project (CHIP) and the China county statistical yearbook), we explore how the type of industrial agglomeration in a rural county affects the labor supply decision of rural workers.

Findings

We show that rural workers in rural counties with higher level of industrial specialization are more likely to: (1) work locally than migrating to large cities; (2) find nonfarm jobs by themselves instead of relying on social networks (3) find a more stable and formal nonfarm job. These effects are significant when rural counties specialize in industries that they have local comparative advantages compared to large cities. This work provides insights into achieving inclusive urbanization by developing industry specialization in rural counties in China, which may also be useful for other developing countries.

Originality/value

First, the conceptual framework of this paper extends the basic model of rural-urban migration longstanding in the literature, to a multi-choice and three-stage labor supply model. Second, we empirically quantify the industrial structure of rural counties using unique dataset, which has been emphasized in the development economics literature but neglected due to data limitations. Third, this paper expands our understanding of the role of rural counties in inclusive urbanization and contributes to the future development of the county-led urbanization policies.
