Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to achieve optimal climbing control of the gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) robot, as the authors know that the GIS inspection robot is a kind of artificial intelligent mobile equipment which auxiliary or even substitute human labor drive on the inner wall of the gas-insulated metal enclosed switchgear. The GIS equipment fault inspection and maintenance can be realized through the robot manipulator on the mobile platform and the camera carried on the fuselage, and it is a kind of intelligent equipment for operation. To realize the inspection and operation of the GIS equipment pipeline without blind spots, the robot is required to be able to travel on any wall inside the pipeline, especially the top of the pipeline and both right and left sides of the pipeline, which requires the flexible climbing of the GIS inspection robot. The robot device has a certain adsorption function to ensure that the robot is fully attached to the wall surface. At the same time, the robot manipulator can be used for collision-free obstacle avoidance operation planning in the narrow operation space inside the GIS equipment.
Design/methodology/approach
The above two technologies are the key that the robot completes the GIS equipment inspections. Based on this, this paper focuses on modeling and analysis of the chassis adsorption characteristics for the GIS inspection robot. At the same time, the Denavit Hartenberg (D-H) coordinate model of the robot arm system has been established, and the kinematics forward and inverse solutions of the robot manipulator system have been derived.
Findings
The reachable working space point cloud diagram of the robot manipulator in MATLAB has been obtained based on the kinematics analysis, and the operation trajectory planning of the robot manipulator using the robot toolbox has been obtained. The simulation results show that the robot manipulator system can realize the movement without collision and obstacle avoidance. The space can cover the entire GIS pipeline so as to achieve no blind area operation.
Originality/value
Finally, the GIS inspection robot physical prototype system has been developed through system integration design, and the inspection, maintenance operation experiment has been carried out in the actual GIS equipment. The entire robot system can complete the GIS equipment inspection operation soundly and improve the operation efficiency. The research in this paper has important theoretical significance and practical application value for the optimization design and practical research of the GIS inspection robot system.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the sealing performance of reciprocating seals under the effect of rubber abrasion using ABAQUS simulation software, and to propose a prediction framework based on a hybrid algorithm (GA-PSO-BPNN) to predict the leakage of reciprocating seals of downhole gauging instrumentation under different working condition parameters.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors combined the UMESHMOTION user program with the improved Archard wear model to investigate reciprocating seal performance. GA and a PSO were proposed as ways to enhance the BPNN’s predictive model.
Findings
The results show that the impact of fluid pressure fluctuations on the wear of the seal lip is more pronounced during the rapid wear phase compared to the steady wear phase. Similarly, variations in compression rate have a greater impact on seal lip wear at different stages of wear. The GA-PSO-BPNN prediction model outperforms the single-prediction model in terms of prediction accuracy.
Originality/value
The authors investigated sealing performance through simulation software and propose a GA-PSO-BPNN-based fault diagnosis method for rotating machinery. To verify the accuracy of the prediction model, a reciprocating sealing test platform for gauge work cylinders is constructed.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to test if the digital economy improves the quality of life of our residents. Furthermore, if this finding is confirmed, what would be the mechanism behind its effect? Does the impact of the digital economy on quality of life vary according to its level of development?
Design/methodology/approach
A comprehensive index of the digital economy, income gap and quality of life was constructed empirically based on data from 220 cities in China from 2011–2020. A multi-dimensional empirical analysis was conducted in this paper.
Findings
The analysis of the pathways of action shows that narrowing the income gap is an important mechanism through which the digital economy actively contributes to the quality of life. The results of the threshold model show that the “marginal effect” of the digital economy on quality of life is non-linear and increasing. The results show that after a series of robustness tests, including instrumental variables, the digital economy still significantly enhances people’s quality of life.
Research limitations/implications
This paper reveals the intrinsic link between the digital economy and quality of life and provides a theoretical basis for further improving people’s well-being.
Practical implications
Encouraging the development of the digital economy is a useful way to improve the quality of life by narrowing the income gap.
Originality/value
Data analysis of the digital economy from 2011–2020 in China to get an insight into what would be the mechanism behind the digital economy improving the quality of life of our residents.

Abstract
Purpose
In social marketplaces, follower ego networks are integral social capital assets for online sellers. While previous research has underscored the positive impact of the follower number on seller performance, little attention has been given to the structure of follower networks and their value implications. This research investigates two structural properties of follower networks—network centralization and density—and examines their main and contingent effects on sellers’ sales performance.
Design/methodology/approach
A 13-month panel dataset of 1,150 sellers in Etsy, a social marketplace for handmade and vintage products, was collected and analyzed. A fixed effects model was adopted to validate the hypotheses on the main effect of centralization and density, as well as the moderating effects of two store attributes: store age and product diversification.
Findings
We find that both network centralization and density negatively impact sellers’ sales performance, and these effects vary across store age and product diversification levels. Specifically, the negative effect of network centralization is less pronounced for older stores than young ones, whereas the negative effect of density is more severe for stores with high product diversification.
Originality/value
This research contributes to social commerce research by highlighting the significance of network structure, alongside network size, in assessing the value of followers and offers practical guidance for sellers in social marketplaces seeking to optimize their follower networks.

Abstract
Purpose
This study examined the impact of environmental factors on consumers’ intention to use buy online in-store returns (BORS) services. Specifically, it investigates how integrating environmental knowledge and consequence awareness into the theory of planned behavior (TPB) influences consumers’ intention to adopt BORS services.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using statistical methods to explore the relationships between attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, environmental factors and intention to use BORS services.
Findings
The findings indicate that attitude, subjective norm and environmental knowledge significantly increase consumers’ intention to use BORS services. Additionally, the interaction of attitude and environmental knowledge further enhances consumers’ intention to use BORS services.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the limited literature on the drivers of consumers’ adoption of BORS services by integrating environmental factors with TPB. It provides new insights into how targeted environmental education and promotion activities can influence consumers’ behavior toward sustainable practices, providing valuable strategies for retailers to support sustainable development goals.

The purpose of this paper is to study the corrosion behavior of Q235 steel in saturated acidic red and yellow soils.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the corrosion behavior of Q235 steel in saturated acidic red and yellow soils.
Design/methodology/approach
The corrosion behavior of Q235 steel in saturated red and yellow soils was compared by weight-loss, SEM/EDS, 3D ultra-depth microscopy and electrochemical measurements.
Findings
Rp of the steel gradually increases and icorr gradually decreases in both the red and yellow soils with time. The Rp of the steel in the red soil is lower, but its icorr is higher than that in the yellow soil. The uniform corrosion rate, diameter and density of the corrosion pit on the steel surface in the red soil are greater than those in the yellow soil. Lower pH, higher contents of corrosive anions and high-valence Fe oxides in the red soil are responsible for its higher corrosion rates and local corrosion susceptibility.
Originality/value
This paper investigates the difference in corrosion behavior of carbon steel in saturated acidic red and yellow soils, which can help to understand the mechanism of soil corrosion.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the actual impact, mechanism and internal and external environmental adjustment effect of ESG performance on the persistence of green innovation using data from China’s A-share manufacturing listed companies from 2009 to 2021.
Design/methodology/approach
Panel data regression models are used to explore the effect of ESG performance of manufacturing enterprises on the persistence of green innovation. To examine the mechanism of ESG performance affecting the persistence of green innovation of manufacturing enterprises, this paper refers to the research of Wen and Ye (2014) and constructs an analysis framework of intermediary effect.
Findings
This research was funded by Shandong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, grant number ZR2023MG075 & ZR2024QE171.
Research limitations/implications
There are a few more limitations to this study that might be discussed from the following angles: first, due to data availability, this paper examines the persistence of green innovation from the output perspective. The authors can expand the data sources in the future and investigate the input-output combinations in green innovation as a means of understanding its sustainability. Second, the mechanism studied in this paper includes management costs, entry of green investors and risk-taking ability. In fact, it is possible that ESG performance influences green innovation persistence in other ways as well; these can be investigated more in the future.
Originality/value
First, it concentrates on the persistence of green innovation in manufacturing enterprises, surpassing the quantitative aspect and thereby broadening the research scope. Second, by including the “management expense ratio,” “green investor entry” and “risk-taking” as mediating factors, the study delves deeper into the mechanisms through which ESG performance impacts the persistence of green innovation in manufacturing enterprises, further broadening the research scope. Third, this research incorporates the internal and external environments encountered by manufacturing enterprises into the analytical framework to investigate their adjustment effects in the process of ESG performance influencing persistent green innovation, thus widening the research perspective. Fourth, this study introduces the subdimensions of ESG performance, specifically environmental responsibility, social responsibility and corporate governance, and assesses their impacts on the persistence of green innovation in manufacturing enterprises, thus enriching the research narrative.
