Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this paper is to advance a critical pedagogical framework, combining critical pedagogy, design research, architectural theory and experiential learning. It addresses global challenges at the intersection between urban peripheries and the Anthropocene – the centre of the climate crisis is a spatial crisis – preparing students as engaged architect citizens capable of reshaping collective life.
Design/methodology/approach
The framework is examined through a case study of the author’s final year architectural theory module, “The Periphery as a Critical Project”, elucidating its theoretical underpinning and presenting a visual analysis of student projects. Methods include reflective module design, fieldwork, close-reading of literature across disciplines, design research, experiential learning strategies and an inventive “theorypractice”.
Findings
The research demonstrates that theorypractice articulates a transformative and experiential learning experience, articulating architectural education as a site for critical engagement with urgent challenges. The approach equips students with critical thinking and making skills, cultivates a commitment to civic responsibility and encourages alternative visions for the Anthropocene. The paper concludes with concepts and practices to define an emerging architectural pedagogy for the Anthropocene.
Practical implications
The research provides guidance for educators in architecture, aligning with RIBA reforms emphasising “history, theories, methodologies” and experiential learning in allied fields such as urban studies, environmental planning and social policy, focused on climate and social resilience, spatial justice and critical literacy. More broadly it aims at preparing engaged architect citizens who can work on and with the world.
Originality/value
This paper contributes an original framework and novel methodology, bringing together theoretical and design research from architecture, urban studies, design, critical pedagogy and environmental humanities to expand experiential learning within architectural theory, an underexplored position. It addresses urgent issues related to urban peripheries, climate change, and how we educate future architects in times of crisis, offering a model for allied fields facing similar societal challenges.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore experiences of the Framework for Integrated Care's team formulation process within a secure children’s home in northern England, from the perspective of care and education staff.
Design/methodology/approach
Four focus groups were facilitated, with a total of 25 participants. The focus groups discussed a number of key areas, including: staff experiences of team formulation; the usefulness of the process; the wider impact of the process; and ways the formulation process could be developed. The data set was analysed using Rapid Qualitative Analysis (Hamilton, 2013).
Findings
Six overarching themes and a number of accompanying subthemes were developed. The six themes were: (i) new ways of understanding; (ii) enabling communication; (iii) young person should be at the centre; (iv) practical considerations; (v) developing accessibility: a systemic lens; and (vi) developing the focus.
Practical implications
Ten implications for practice within secure children’s homes and wider establishments are outlined. These relate to various aspects of the formulation process, including the preparatory work, meeting attendance, the focus of the formulation and dissemination.
Originality/value
Research within the context of secure children’s homes is expanding and has included the direct involvement of young people. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study utilising a qualitative, focus group method to consider the experiences of team formulation from the perspective of the wider care and education staff team in a secure children’s home.

This paper examines the impact of board ethnic diversity on the level of compliance with international financial reporting standards (IFRS) disclosures.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper examines the impact of board ethnic diversity on the level of compliance with international financial reporting standards (IFRS) disclosures.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a unique hand-collected dataset from South Africa, we develop a comprehensive disclosure index against 570 mandatory requirements of IFRS. Further, we employ the fixed-effects model to investigate whether board ethnic diversity affects IFRS disclosures.
Findings
We document a significant positive association between ethnic minority directors and IFRS disclosure levels. Furthermore, we reveal that non-busy ethnic minority directors have a greater impact on IFRS disclosure levels than their busy counterparts. Additional analyses show that ethnic minority directors have less impact on IFRS disclosure levels when their number exceeds two. Companies with more ethnic directors on audit committees are more likely to comply with IFRS disclosure requirements and ethnic diversity increases accounting disclosures irrespective of the level of ownership concentration.
Originality/value
Our findings shed new light on the impact of board ethnic diversity on firms’ compliance with IFRS disclosure requirements. The results are robust to alternative econometric techniques, proxies and potential endogeneity concerns.

Abstract
Purpose
Organizations are increasingly deploying algorithmic human resource management (HRM) for decision-making. Despite algorithms beginning to permeate HRM practices, our understanding of how to interpret and leverage the functions of algorithmic HRM remains limited. This study aims to review the stock of knowledge in this field of algorithmic HRM and introduce a theoretical perspective of functional affordance to enhance the understanding of the value of algorithmic HRM.
Design/methodology/approach
A systematic literature review was conducted in this study based on 283 articles. The articles are extracted from the Web of Science and Scopus. The content of the articles was then integrated to formulate the framework for this study.
Findings
Functional affordance highlights algorithmic HRM can be systematically embedded within the organizational environment, with its characteristics naturally suggesting the functionalities or actions available for HR managers to choose from. The findings of this study demonstrate five features of algorithmic HRM from the perspective of functional affordance: awareness of algorithmic HRM, alignment with business model design, action readiness, adaptation to business context and attribution to individuality.
Originality/value
This study provides a novel perspective for understanding the insufficiently theorized application of algorithmic HRM within organizations. It presents an integrated framework that elucidates the key features of algorithmic HRM and elaborates on how organizations can better develop algorithm-driven capabilities based on functional affordance.
