Abstract

Purpose

This study leverages an enhanced expectation confirmation model of information technology continuance to explore the factors that shape the continuance intention toward cloud computing services.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from personal cloud computing service users in Malaysia, resulting in a total of 567 usable responses. The research used partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) for comparative analysis and model selection based on predictive accuracy.

Findings

The study findings demonstrate that perceived benefits, ease of use, usefulness, risk and trust play crucial roles as antecedents to user confirmation and satisfaction, thereby influencing the intention for continuous service usage. Notably, the hypotheses formulated for the study received robust support, with 13 out of 14 anticipated relationships proving statistically significant.

Originality/value

This study presents a novel investigation into the continuance of personal cloud computing services among Malaysian users, contributing to a deeper understanding of user intention dynamics in this context. Integrating an expanded ECM-IT framework offers a comprehensive analytical approach that simultaneously considers information systems and non-IS factors. Additionally, the study underscores the significance of predictive capability assessment using the PLSpredict method, providing a valuable benchmark for model selection in future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between public knowledge, awareness and attitudes towards post-COVID-19 infection prevention in Sarawak. At present, Sarawak is in the post-pandemic stage, marked by a gradual return to normalcy, albeit with some persistent changes caused by the pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from various geographic areas in Sarawak through a Google Form link and QR code during a cross-sectional study, resulting in the acquisition of 1,128 responses. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 28.0 and WarpPLS 8.0.

Findings

The result revealed that out of five hypotheses, four were found to be supported, indicating a positive relationship between public knowledge, awareness and attitudes towards COVID-19 infection prevention. However, an unsupported relationship was found between public awareness and infection prevention practices.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to the Malaysian population and has a cross-sectional design, affecting generalizability. It is recommended that future research complete an in-depth study of the knowledge, awareness and practices of COVID-19 using other data collection techniques.

Practical implications

Public health and policymakers can use the study to implement effective communication strategies and prioritize digitalization for economic recovery. It highlights the importance of preventive measures and the public’s role in managing future pandemics.

Originality/value

The originality of this research can be drawn from key findings that indicate that people overall gained knowledge on the prevention measures during the post-COVID-19 pandemic, and the accuracy of the information significantly impacts public knowledge, awareness and practices of COVID-19 infection prevention.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to explore the factors influencing the adoption intention of eco-friendly smart home appliances among residents in densely populated urban areas of a developing country.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative research approach was employed to gather data from 348 respondents through purposive sampling. A comparative analysis strategy was then utilized to investigate the adoption of eco-friendly smart home appliances, combining both linear (PLS-SEM) and non-linear (fsQCA) approaches.

Findings

The results obtained from PLS-SEM highlight that performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, price value, and environmental knowledge significantly influence the adoption intention of eco-friendly smart home appliances. However, the findings suggest that effort expectancy, social influence, and habit are not significantly associated with customers' intention to adopt eco-friendly smart home appliances. On the other hand, the fsQCA results identified eight configurations of antecedents, offering valuable insights into interpreting the complex combined causal relationships among these factors that can generate (each combination) the adoption intention of eco-friendly smart home appliances among densely populated city dwellers.

Research limitations/implications

This study offers crucial marketing insights for various stakeholders, including homeowners, technology developers and manufacturers, smart home service providers, real estate developers, and government entities. The findings provide guidance on how these stakeholders can effectively encourage customers to adopt eco-friendly smart home appliances, aligning with future environmental sustainability demands. The research implications underscore the significance of exploring the antecedents that influence customers' adoption intention of eco-friendly technologies, contributing to the attainment of future sustainability goals.

Originality/value

The environmental sustainability of smart homes, particularly in densely populated city settings in developing countries, has received limited attention in previous studies. Therefore, this study aims to address the pressing issue of global warming and make a meaningful contribution to future sustainability goals related to smart housing technologies. Therefore, this study employs a comprehensive approach, combining both PLS-SEM (linear) and fsQCA (non-linear) techniques to provide a more thorough examination of the factors influencing the adoption of environmentally sustainable smart home appliances.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse the resilience strategy utilized by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), enabling these businesses to effectively adapt their operations in response to varying conditions by providing them with essential resources. SMEs operate in marketplaces that are both dynamic and frequently tumultuous. These markets provide SMEs with a variety of obstacles, including economic ups and downs, advances in technology, evolving customer tastes and new regulatory requirements. SMEs need to create a strategic strategy to survive and grow in such situations. This strategy ought to help strengthen their resiliency and make it possible for them to make the most of emerging opportunities while simultaneously lowering the dangers.

Design/methodology/approach

The questionnaires adopted and adapted from previous research served as the basis for gathering the data. The manufacturing industry was polled through the use of questionnaires. To test the hypothesis, the data were analysed using Smart PLS. Through the use of closed-ended questions directed to the proprietors, managers or senior executives of SMEs, data were collected from each and every institution in the sample. Following the examination of the data by means of descriptive analysis and the presentation of several scenarios using information relating to SMEs, the findings were presented.

Findings

The ambidextrous strategies that are used by SMEs have a propensity to offer a constructive contribution to SMEs. In this study, it was discovered that ambidexterity, which is defined as the capacity to both seek and capitalise on possibilities, has a significant bearing on the organisational effectiveness of SMEs. The results showed that ambidextrous strategies have a propensity to work as mediators in interactions involving proactive resilience tactics and performance.

Research limitations/implications

The research expands our understanding of how SMEs in the manufacturing sector may improve their performance by concentrating on growing their ambidextrous strategies.

Practical implications

This study provides a plausible explanation of two crucial management mechanisms for enhancing the sustainability of organisational effectiveness. The relationships between ambidextrous capabilities and firm effectiveness are malleable, and this study suggests that nurturing formal and informal relationships may be the key to SMEs' long-term sustainable performance. Improving the knowledge and performance of supply chain systems for SMEs in the manufacturing sector and boosting their competitiveness in domestic and international markets are the practical contributions of this study.

Social implications

Our comprehension of monitoring, cooperation and innovation within social management was deepened as a result of these facts. In addition, the study conducted in the sector uncovered four essential connections that outline how managers should actively work towards lowering social risks, developing new possibilities and increasing business performance. These capacities and links, when taken as a whole, provide the foundation upon which an integrated framework and five research propositions are built.

Originality/value

This research offers a convincing explanation of fundamental management processes for enhancing the sustainability of organisational effectiveness. This research implies that developing formal and informal interactions may be the key to the sustainable performance of SMEs over the long run. The relationships between ambidextrous capabilities, methods and organisational effectiveness are flexible, and this study also suggests that these relationships may be shaped. The practical contributions made by this research include boosting the understanding and performance of supply chain systems for SMEs as well as the competitive power of these businesses in both local and international markets.

Abstract

Purpose

Business competitiveness is critical for a thriving economy that requires companies to be more efficient and innovative to outperform their rivals. This paper investigates the main determinants of business competitiveness from the resource-based view (RBV) perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 140 discrete and large manufacturing firms in Malaysia through a cross-sectional quantitative-based survey with a convenience sampling procedure. The findings from the PLS-SEM analysis showed that implementing LAG manufacturing significantly amplifies business competitiveness.

Findings

It was found that cost leadership strategy drives lean and agile manufacturing implementation, while differentiation positively amplifies the implementation of lean, agile and green manufacturing. This study contributes to the body of knowledge and provides insight to practitioners in tailoring strategies to steer manufacturing firms toward being more competitive.

Originality/value

This study identifies the effect of LAGP implementation on business competitiveness. This paper will benefit practitioners and managers by providing insights into tailoring strategies to steer manufacturing firms towards being more competitive. This paper follows a structure that includes: an introduction to the study, a review of relevant literature on business competitiveness, lean, agile and green manufacturing implementation, the development of hypotheses, the presentation of research methodology and findings, and finally, a conclusion with a discussion, implications, limitations and suggestions for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study proposes a model that influences customer citizenship behavior during COVID-19, and empirically tests the effects of fast-food restaurant customers' perceptions of justice (price and procedural justice) on trust; trust on satisfaction and loyalty; and trust, satisfaction and loyalty on customer citizenship behavior. Furthermore, it was questioned whether there was a disparity between customer expectations based on the restaurant's image and consumption experience.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were gathered from customers of fast-food restaurants in the shopping centers in Turkey. The data set, which included 437 valid questionnaires, was subjected to CFA for validity and reliability, SEM analysis for hypothesis and paired sample t-Tests for the research questions.

Findings

The findings of the study indicate that perceived justice affects customer trust, which, consequently, affects customer loyalty and satisfaction during the COVID-19 period. Findings also demonstrate that, while customer loyalty and trust increase customer citizenship behavior, customer satisfaction alone is insufficient to increase customer citizenship behavior. The study also shows that during the COVID-19 period, fast-food restaurants should have raised awareness of employees’ fair behaviors toward the customers and provided additional services to differentiate themselves in the market. Also, it indicates that customer expectations related to price, cleanliness and professional appearance of staff are not met after taking service.

Originality/value

No research has been found in the literature focusing on the expectations, justice, trust, satisfaction, loyalty and citizenship behaviors of fast-food restaurant customers in the COVID-19 pandemic process. Therefore, the results can fill the gap in relevant literature by testing the relationships between justice, trust, satisfaction, loyalty and citizenship during the pandemic and provide inferences for fast-food business owners.

Abstract

Purpose

Strategic leveraging of Mobile Commerce (M-commerce) holds immense potential for augmenting firm performance within the realm of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. This study seeks to unravel the important role played by specific factors, namely, relative advantage, security, complexity, firm performance, organizational competence, M-commerce knowledge, competitive pressure, customer value and information intensity in influencing M-commerce adoption and its subsequent impact on SME performance. Drawing on the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, the study posits that technological factors (relative advantage, security and complexity), organizational factors (organizational IT competence and M-commerce knowledge) and environmental factors (competitive pressure, customer value and information intensity) collectively shape M-commerce adoption, thereby influencing SME performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs a quantitative approach, engaging SME owners in Malaysia as participants, with a sample size of 150 selected through an online survey. Analysis was conducted using Smart PLS, revealing crucial insights.

Findings

The investigation revealed a positive relationship between relative advantage, security, complexity, competitive pressure, customer value and information intensity, and the adoption of M-commerce within SMEs in Malaysia. Moreover, a positive relationship was identified between M-commerce adoption and firm performance among Malaysian SMEs. Intriguingly, there was no discernible relationship between Organizational IT competence, M-commerce knowledge and the adoption of M-commerce.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the scant literature exploring SMEs’ inclination toward M-commerce for performance enhancement. The proactive adoption of M-commerce stands poised to empower SMEs in Malaysia, enabling them to play a more substantial role in the national economic structure. Consequently, it emphasizes the need for effective communication of government policies pertaining to M-commerce adoption, particularly among SME stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose

Financial inclusion provides access to financial infrastructure, facilitating money transfers. Therefore, blockchain and cryptocurrencies might boost worldwide financial acceptance. However, the UAE has one of the lowest cryptocurrency adoption rates. This study explores the UAE customer adoption and use of cryptocurrencies.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a scale, the authors created a structural model and obtained 270 responses from a snowball-distributed online questionnaire, assessed by five cryptocurrency specialists.

Findings

Performance expectations (PE), price value (PV), Hedonic motivation (HM) and consumer innovativeness (CI) were the most significant predictors of behavioural intention (BI). Surprisingly, BI is not a reliable indication of actual consumption. Facilitating conditions (FC) are the most accurate predictor of cryptocurrency usage (CU), indicating that adoption might be increased by providing the necessary structures and processes to lead users.

Research limitations/implications

This research adds to the body of knowledge by examining the adoption and implementation of cryptocurrencies in the UAE and by developing and evaluating new constructs based on current notions. The study also contributes to the current understanding of cryptocurrencies and blockchain adoption.

Practical implications

The conclusions of the research advise marketers on how to boost the commercialisation of cryptocurrencies in the UAE market and may pave the way for other studies to assist impending developments in the UAE cryptocurrency industry.

Originality/value

This research offers novel insights into significant predictors of cryptocurrency product uptake in the financial and banking business.

Abstract

Purpose

Business environment, which is described by being volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, forces organisations to innovate their products, processes and services to stay competitive. Employees’ innovative behaviours play a critical role in enhancing business environment. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of supervisor’s practices on employee’s innovative behaviour and the mediating role of employee engagement on the relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative research design was used. Data is collected from 163 employees from Ministry of Education in Oman by using an online questionnaire. SmartPLS-based structural equation modelling and process macro by Hayes are used for data analysis.

Findings

Results revealed significant relationships between supervisor’s practices (recognition, empowerment and development), employee engagement and innovative behaviour. It also revealed a significant relationship between supervisor’s practices (recognition, empowerment and development) and employee engagement. Furthermore, the results supported the hypotheses that supervisor’s practices affect innovative behaviour through employee engagement.

Originality/value

Although the literature reveals that supervisor’s practices foster innovative behaviour, the mediating role of employee engagement has rarely been empirically investigated. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is one of the first papers that asserts the importance of employee engagement in mediating the relationship between supervisor’s practices and employee innovative behaviour. It also investigates a hybrid of organisational (supervisor’s practices) and individual level factors (employee’s engagement) in predicting innovative behaviours. It contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the ways to achieve a business strategy of innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

The study explores the sustainability of biodegradable materials as an eco-friendly substitute for traditional plastics across diverse applications. These materials decompose harmlessly within a specific timeframe, contributing to a holistic lifecycle. Yet, their widespread adoption depends on convincing consumers, manufacturers and regulators of their effectiveness. An empirical study was undertaken to investigate the determinants impacting the sustainability of biodegradable plastics.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed a quantitative approach, seeking to discern the factors shaping the endurance of these materials in Malaysia. The study encompassed 316 viable responses, with outcomes from the PLS-SEM analysis offering partial support to the research framework.

Findings

The study reveals that individual characteristics strongly influence the sustainability of biodegradable plastics and are essential factors in determining behavioural intentions related to sustainability, such as purchasing environmentally friendly packaged food products.

Practical implications

The study provides practical implications for government and corporate sectors to design effective strategies encouraging consumers to choose biodegradable plastics. Regular awareness campaigns should be conducted to increase consumer engagement in environmental concerns and reduce the use of non-eco-friendly packaging in the public sector.

Originality/value

Previous literature has overlooked the sustainability aspects of the biodegradable plastics market, leaving a gap in understanding the influential factors and their sustainability, especially in the Malaysian context. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the determinants that govern the sustainability of biodegradable plastics.
