Abstract
Purpose
To become a sustainable lean manufacturing (LM) system, an organization must be first distinctly cognizant of the terms “lean” and “sustainability” as they relate to the state of affairs of their particular industry and business. Next, the organization must identify and acquire the necessary qualities it needs to become sustainable in lean philosophy and its practices in the organization. The LM paradigm has been a top priority for many businesses; thus, this article is based on actual research done in Indian small and medium scale organizations to see how widely it is understood and implemented.
Design/methodology/approach
A framework was developed based on literature review and academic research. A preliminary analysis of a small number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that, conceptually, summarizes and demonstrates the concerted efforts that a company may undertake to increase its leanness. This conceptual model was employed to create a questionnaire that was administered to survey the SMEs of India. The information gathered through this questionnaire was analyzed using the model developed by the researchers. Then fuzzy logic and systems approach were used to find out the effectiveness index (EI) of the organization.
Findings
The EI for system leanness at different organizational levels within an organization is determined using fuzzy logic and systems approach for 48 SMEs in different clusters. The average EI of the system was found to be 0.336 on a scale of 0–1 which indicates that the current state of lean implementation and its sustainability is very low and poor in Indian SMEs. This article outlines the key model components and describes how they were applied to analyze the data gathered from an industry study.
Research limitations/implications
The research aims to make lean continuously sustainable by surfacing and eliminating the wastes in the Indian SMEs whenever it appears rather than using it as a cleaning tool. The present study was focused on India’s southern industrial areas and it was difficult to gather the information around the country due to its diverse industrial culture and geography. Hence, more research and the comparative study of the same that takes into account the various regions of the nation’s industrial lean behavior can be conducted.
Practical implications
The generalized sustainable lean framework analyzed using fuzzy logic and systems approach gives the current effectiveness of the leanness in SMEs of south India. This model can be effectively implemented in other areas of the nation to identify the scenario of lean and its sustainability and a final comprehensive model can be developed.
Originality/value
There is a dearth of comprehensive studies on the assessment of sustainability of the lean philosophy in Indian SMEs. With the help of combined fuzzy logic and systems approach, the model developed in this study evaluates the sustainability of the lean methodology using the EI used in SMEs by taking into account both the lean and sustainability factors as well as enablers like customer satisfaction, ethics, innovation and technology.

Abstract
Purpose
Fresh and short food supply chains in grocery quick commerce (q-grocery FSFSCs), while valued for swift delivery, face challenges in sustainability, resource efficiency and scalability. This study aims to redesign the last mile of q-grocery FSFSCs by identifying and validating a framework of applicable circular economy (CE) practices. Furthermore, the study assesses the impact of these practices across various sustainability dimensions to understand their level of contribution to sustainable livelihoods and supply chain resilience.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employs a multi-phase approach. First, an integrative literature review identifies CE practices and strategies. Second, a survey gathers data on the relationship between these practices and strategies and their impact on sustainability. Third, the framework is validated using the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method in WarpPLS 8.0. Finally, k-means cluster analysis in Tableau 2019.4 groups CE practices based on their impact across five sustainability dimensions: environmental, economic, social, resource efficiency and scalability.
Findings
The study validates a framework and identifies high-impact CE practices, such as waste reduction, sustainable packaging, sustainable sourcing, route optimization, sustainable processes and customer convenience. Medium-impact practices include energy efficiency, sustainable fleet, resale and redistribution and information flow. Low-impact practices cover composting, reverse logistics and appropriate storage.
Research limitations/implications
The findings assist q-grocery companies to adopt CE practices and strategies that support sustainable livelihoods and strengthen supply chain resilience while offering policymakers guidance to promote circularity.
Originality/value
This study is unique in the exploration of the intersection of quick commerce, FSFSCs and CE principles, providing actionable insights for sustainability in the q-grocery industry.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present journey mapping as a creative practice that can be used to “do doctoral education differently”, specifically, in a way that supports the wellbeing of doctoral students and centres students often excluded in post-secondary planning and program development. It understands journey mapping through the lens of feminist care ethics, critical and decolonizing disability studies, theories of Indigenous relationality, systems thinking, and action-oriented approaches.
Design/methodology/approach
Using collaborative autoethnography, it critically analyses authors’ experiences of a journey mapping process initiated by students in a new interdisciplinary doctoral program in Ontario, Canada. For this study, the authors invited all students currently enrolled in the program and the Program Director to share their reflections on their experiences with journey mapping as a creative practice. They then conducted collaborative data analysis, working together to identify common themes, experiences and tensions which arose throughout the journey mapping process.
Findings
The study analysis positions journey mapping as a creative practice of collective memory, which can facilitate connection, healing and change. It suggests that this practice can be used to resist problematic ideals of individualism, and competition within academia, by offering a process through which graduate students can build community, advocate for programmatic changes, and move towards individual and collective wellbeing.
Originality/value
Drawing on the lived experiences in an interdisciplinary doctoral program, this paper brings together work that explores student experience and creative practice in graduate education with the practice of journey mapping, to highlight the possibilities and tensions of using this approach. In the changing landscape of doctoral education, practices that centre students’ voices and support student wellbeing must be developed, and the resources needed to support such practices better understood.

Abstract
Purpose
This research examines the employability challenges faced by skilled female migrants in the Australian construction industry, focusing on barriers to employment and their negative impacts on confidence, health and well-being. The paper concludes with recommendations for construction firms and policymakers to improve the employability of these women, offering insights that are applicable internationally.
Design/methodology/approach
Using employability theory, the study draws on semi-structured interviews with 16 skilled female migrants seeking employment in the Australian construction industry. The interviews captured the lived experiences of these women, and thematic analysis was applied to identify key barriers and inform recommendations for construction firms and policymakers.
Findings
The findings provide new conceptual insights into the multiple barriers which female skilled migrants have to overcome in improving their employability in the construction industry. It is also found that these experiences of seeking employment in construction align with the theoretical concept of “contextualized employability” and have potentially profound negative impacts on skilled female migrants’ confidence, hope, health, well-being and family and community relationships. This is despite the Australian construction industry facing a serious labour and skills shortage and being the most gender segregated industry in Australia. The study highlights the need for tailored support, improved industry practices and collaborative efforts from government and private sectors to enhance the employability and integration of skilled female migrants in the construction industry.
Research limitations/implications
The research is limited by its focus on the Australian context, which may not be generalisable to other countries with different institutional systems, policies and cultural attitudes towards migrants. The sample size of 16 participants, while providing in-depth insights, may not capture the full diversity of experiences among female skilled migrants. Further research is needed in other countries to compare findings and develop more comprehensive strategies. Despite these limitations, the study’s implications highlight the urgent need for better support systems and industry reforms to improve the employability of skilled female migrants in the construction sector.
Practical implications
Improving the employability of skilled female migrants promotes social integration, mental health and stronger community ties. It challenges gender stereotypes and reduces discrimination in the construction industry, contributing to a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Practical recommendations include mentorship programs, inclusive recruitment and tailored training. Social procurement policies could set hiring targets for female migrants in the construction industry, while streamlined qualification recognition and tax incentives can encourage hiring. Non-profits and community organisations can support these efforts through mentorship, networking and internships, helping these women build sustainable careers and strengthen workforce diversity. The recommendations aim at enhancing the job prospects and overall well-being of these women while addressing labour shortages in the construction industry.
Originality/value
This study contributes original insights into the under-researched area of skilled female migrants’ employability in the construction industry. It expands employability theory by highlighting the impact of intersecting factors such as gender, migration status and industry-specific barriers on employment outcomes. Its practical recommendations offer pathways for policymakers and industry leaders to improve the integration and employment outcomes of this untapped talent pool.

Abstract
Purpose
The study intends to evaluate first the performance of Indian institutions ranked in the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2019. Second, it compares the performance of Indian institutions with international rankings. Third, it spotlights a model for predicting the criteria that will improve these institutions' national and international rankings.
Design/methodology/approach
The cluster analysis has been undertaken to group the sample of 100 institutions into three groups. Further, discriminant analysis has been performed to uncover the criteria that cause significant variations in the ranking. Third, a comparative study is conducted on the international ranking parameters to explore the factors responsible for their lower rank in the global ranking.
Findings
The results reveal that most institutions are low-performing for “research and professional practice” and “peer perception” criteria. Meanwhile, the performance of top-ranked institutions is unsatisfactory on the “outreach and inclusivity” criterion. The study also finds that the national ranking of Indian institutions is significantly affected by the “research and professional practice” and “peer perception” scores, which also results in their low rank in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking.
Research limitations/implications
This study can be an exemplary model for any developing nation to upgrade its higher education institutions' (HEIs’) performance in international tables
Practical implications
The government can develop policies to better low-performing universities and initiate policy changes in the incapacitated spheres for building a globally distinctive image for the Indian universities. The policymakers can recognise the institutions showcasing excellent research and teaching performance and encourage them accordingly to be the best research or teaching universities as it is not possible for every university to be the best in teaching and research aspect both.
Social implications
The policymakers can also focus more on developing research collaboration form other countries and industry for research universities and professional staff from leading industries for teaching collaborations for the rest. The HPIs should focus on creating a global image for themselves and MPIs and LPIs should be encouraged to raise their national ranking.
Originality/value
The study is a novel attempt to present the present state of Indian institutions grounded on all the national ranking criteria. It further compares the performance of sample NIRF institutions with international rankings criterion to suggest policy changes for improving their performance at the global level.

The relationship with internal and external actors on the part of higher education institutions (HEIs) is a fundamental factor for them to fully exercise their role in sustainable development and the evolution of individuals, organizations and society as a whole. In this sense, this study aims to analyze the literature about stakeholder management in HEIs and to provide guidelines to support managers of HEIs to enhance stakeholder management practices.
Design/methodology/approach
This research was conducted through a bibliometric analysis followed by a content analysis to propose the guidelines to support HEIs’ managers in improving stakeholder management practices.
Findings
The guidelines were proposed for each of the following seven areas: engagement and governance; innovation and knowledge management; education for sustainable development; responsible research, innovation and collaborative partnerships; organisational change management; social responsibility; and performance management and sustainability report.
Originality/value
Although the topic addressed has gained traction in the academic community, the literature fails to provide guidelines to support managers of HEIs enhance stakeholder management practices. From a theoretical standpoint, the increasing recognition of the importance of stakeholder engagement reflects a paradigm shift in understanding sustainability and social responsibility in HEIs. On a practical level, managers can use the guidelines to promote effective dialogue, increase stakeholder engagement and collaborative partnerships.

Purpose
The study aims to examine diabetic patients’ switching intentions toward self-monitoring blood glucose devices, incorporating perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, with switching cost as a moderator.
Design/methodology/approach
A self-administered questionnaire was developed using established measuring scales. Data from 321 respondents was collected and analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling approach.
Findings
Results indicate that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use influence switching intention. Switching cost does not moderate the perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and switching intention. This study reveals important information for healthcare practitioners and device manufacturers.
Originality/value
The significance and originality of this study stem from its pioneering investigation into the switching intentions of diabetic patients regarding self-monitoring glucose devices through the application of the technology acceptance model, thereby addressing a notable gap in the existing literature on diabetes management and technology adoption, which has lacked comprehensive examination of patients’ transition behaviors in this specific context.

Abstract
Purpose
Virtual teams allow companies to recruit the best talents, regardless of their geographic location, which is particularly relevant in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector given the high shortage of qualified human capital. However, the space and time flexibility of these professionals also present other challenges to Human Resource Management, such as work engagement and employee retention. This study aims to assess the extent to which supervisor support can influence work engagement and turnover intention in virtual teams.
Design/methodology/approach
We use a sample of 420 ICT Portuguese professionals who work in virtual teams to test a conceptual model with partial least squares (PLS).
Findings
The study results show that supervisor support decreases employee's intention to leave their job. We also found that work engagement mediates the relationship between supervisor support and work engagement. Results show that older employees present higher levels of work engagement and employees with longer tenure perceive less supervisor support.
Originality/value
This study contributes to elucidate the role played by supervisors in influencing employee engagement and retention in virtual work environments.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the use of social media platforms compared to IT-enabled communication in the context of dispersed teams.
Design/methodology/approach
We draw on the millefeuille theory to develop a model that examines the impact of multiple media use (namely the millefeuille effect) on team performance. Data were collected from 70 dispersed teams.
Findings
We showed dispersed teams are more likely to improve their performance when relying on diverse media, including social media platforms and other IT-enabled communication. We provide empirical evidence that the millefeuille effect does not necessarily impede performance.
Originality/value
An increasing number of companies are implementing social media platforms as part of their media portfolio in addition to the already existing IT-enabled communication, such as email. However, we lack understanding of how the use of different media impacts team performance. Drawing on the millefeuille theory, this study investigates the use of social media platforms in dispersed teams by examining how their use with other IT-enabled communication can lead to team performance. This research introduces and differentiates two measures of the millefeuille effect to explain the different impacts of the millefeuille effect: millefeuille size (the number of non-overlapping media used) and millefeuille diversity (the variety of media used).

Purpose
Food manufacturing supply chain systems are the most relevant wheels of the world economy since they provide essential products supporting daily life. Nevertheless, various supply inefficiencies have been reported to compromise food safety in different regions. Sustainable supplier management and digitalization practices have become cornerstone activities in addressing these shortcomings. Therefore, this paper proposes an integrated method for sustainability management in digital manufacturing supply chain systems (DMSCS) from the food industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The Intuitionistic Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (IF-AHP) was used to weigh the criteria and subcriteria under uncertainty. Second, the Intuitionistic Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (IF-DEMATEL) was applied to determine the main DMSCS sustainability drivers whilst incorporating the expert's hesitancy. Finally, the Combined Compromise Solution (CoCoSo) was implemented to pinpoint the weaknesses hindering DMSCS sustainability. A case study from the pork supply chain was presented to validate this method.
Findings
The most important criterion for DMSCS sustainability management is “location” while “manufacturing capacity” is the most significant dispatcher.
Originality/value
This paper presents a novel approach integrating IF-AHP, IF-DEMATEL, and CoCoSo methods for sustainability management of DMSCS pillaring the food industry.
