Abstract

Purpose

To explore the role of digital leadership in fostering strategic agility, innovation adaptivity, organizational agility and resilience in the context of digital transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

Following an interpretive case study approach and using a thematic data analysis technique, we conducted 20 in-depth interviews with digital leaders from five different media firms across the UAE.

Findings

The findings reveal that digital leaders are central to developing and executing digital strategies that enhance organizational agility and competitive edge, particularly in firms’ digital transformation. Digital leaders catalyze innovation and adaptability, ensuring the organization’s readiness for technological and market shifts. Moreover, digital leaders are instrumental in fostering an environment that promotes continuous learning, technological integration and a culture of change, which drives organizational agility and resilience.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in its focused examination of digital leadership within the UAE’s media sector, offering new insights into how digital leadership drives strategic agility, innovation adaptivity, organizational agility and resilience in a regionally specific digital transformation context. Our findings contribute to the broader academic and practical understanding of digital transformation in the media industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Scholars and practitioners acknowledge that digital leadership can help organizations gain a competitive advantage. This article focuses on the characteristics, styles and skills needed for effective digital leadership. It looks at the role of digital leaders in innovating business models and introducing organizational change required for a successful digital transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is based on a comprehensive literature review of digital transformation, digital leadership, business model innovation, and organizational culture. It draws on institutional theory (INT) the neo-institutional theory (NIT). It draws from Science Direct, Web of Science and Google Scholar publications. A proposition and a conceptual framework are developed based on evaluating and synthesizing the literature.

Findings

We find that specific leader characteristics (agility, participative, innovativeness and openness), styles (democratic and transformational) and skills (cognitive, social, technological and digital) enable successful business model innovation and organizational change, all of which allow successful digital transformation of firms.

Originality/value

The literature on digital transformation has not been well integrated with the leadership literature. This is particularly true in terms of the role digital leaders play in the successful digital transformation of firms. The conceptual framework and a way forward proposed in this paper introduce future research directions on the topic.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the relationship between voluntary disclosure and the cost of capital as a direct relationship and as an indirect relationship mediated by information asymmetry. It provides evidence from Jordan as a developing economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample was selected from the companies listed in the first market of the Amman Stock Exchange during the period 2010–2019. Four exclusion criteria were used in selecting the companies for analysis.

Findings

The findings show that the cost of capital and information asymmetry are negatively affected by voluntary disclosure, as well as that the cost of capital is positively affected by information asymmetry. In addition, information asymmetry does not mediate the relationship between voluntary disclosure and the cost of capital.

Originality/value

This research looks at the mediating effect of information asymmetry in the relationship between voluntary disclosure and the cost of capital; thus, it provides new explanations about it using empirical evidence from a developing economy. As a necessary consequence, this research has the potential to significantly contribute to the existing body of knowledge and literature in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

With the emergence of the digital era, the role of digital leaders in developing digital capabilities and driving their firms towards digital transformation has gained significant attention. Digital dynamic capabilities involve continuous engagement of leaders in sensing, seizing, and transforming activities needed to digitally transform their firms. However, little attention is given toward the role of digital leadership in developing digital dynamic capabilities. We seek to develop an understanding of the role of digital leadership in building digital dynamic capabilities for successful digital transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted a systematic literature review and looked at relevant articles using Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases with key search items being “digital leadership”, “dynamic capabilities”, “digital dynamic capabilities,”. We used AND, OR operators in between the key terms to search for the relevant articles.

Findings

Our conceptual framework and propositions demonstrate the digital leader's role in building three core dynamic capabilities: digital sensing (technological trends, digital scouting, digital vision, future interpretation, and digital strategies), digital seizing (organizational agility and digital portfolio), and transforming (redesigning internal structures and ecosystem partnerships) for successful digital transformation.

Originality/value

This study pioneers an integrated framework that elucidates the role of digital leadership in fostering digital dynamic capabilities essential for successful digital transformation. While previous research has examined digital leadership and transformation in separate silos, our work bridges this gap by defining and dissecting three core capabilities—digital sensing, digital seizing, and transforming. By doing so, we offer both academic and practical communities a nuanced understanding of how digital leadership shapes dynamic capabilities. The study serves as a foundational roadmap for future research and offers actionable insights for organizations striving to navigate the complex landscape of digital transformation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to focus on Pakistan’s food manufacturing enterprises and explore the knowledge and implications of green innovation, green intellectual capital (GIC) and green human resource management (GHRM) in achieving environmental performance and competitive advantage.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a quantitative approach, this research adopted a cross-sectional survey design to facilitate an objective and precise evaluation of the proposed relationships. The demographic comprised managers and supervisors from food manufacturing enterprises in Lahore, Pakistan. Through purposive sampling, 281 respondents were selected, ensuring representation from food enterprises.

Findings

This study explores that GIC is vital for implementing sustainable technologies in Pakistan’s food sectors. GIC and human resource management are identified as accelerators for green innovation, potentially providing an enhanced environmental performance and competitive edge.

Practical implications

By recognizing the potential of green practices as strategic resources, managers in the Pakistani food sector invest in fostering intangible resources and GIC. This approach leads to sustainable market dominance and efficient operations through continuous green innovation and effective stakeholder communication.

Originality/value

This research offers a consolidated view of the function of GIC in encouraging green innovations in Pakistan’s food enterprises, emphasizing the importance of GHRM procedures and sustainable business methods. This study also provides insights into the strategic management of green projects from a managerial perspective, emphasizing the need for alignment with company strategy and stakeholder communication.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a novel approach to Islamic deposit insurance, specifically addressing the deficiencies in the current prevailing models of Islamic deposit insurance.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis in this paper adopts a qualitative content analysis approach to review the existing literature on Islamic deposit insurance and propose a new model.

Findings

The proposed model includes a revised scheme. In the event of a bank failure, the funds used to reimburse depositors of the failed bank are divided into two distinct categories. The first category includes nonrepayable premiums that have been previously paid by the failed bank and managed by the Islamic deposit insurance agency or Islamic deposit insurance corporation. The second category comprises qard hasan, an interest-free loan provided by the Islamic deposit insurance agency or Islamic deposit insurance corporation using the deposit insurance funds from the collective pool of premiums of other banks.

Practical implications

The proposed model ensures that well-managed banks are not unfairly burdened by the failures of their poorly managed counterparts, thus preventing a sense of unfairness and inefficiency. Implementing the proposed model may result in higher business practices and risk management standards, ultimately leading to better depositors’ protection and banking system’s stability.

Originality/value

This paper offers a significant contribution to the limited literature on Islamic deposit insurance. The proposed model enriches the discourse and offers valuable insights for the future development of Islamic banking.

Abstract

Purpose

Developing and maintaining green innovation (GI) and environmental performance (EP) has become a significant challenge for every organization. The present paper attempts to confirm the contributions of technology leadership (TL) and green HRM (GHRM) to green work engagement (GWE), GI and EP. The study also recognizes GWE’s contribution to connecting TL, GHRM, GI and EP.

Design/methodology/approach

The study applies a deductive approach where data are gathered through questionnaires from employees of manufacturing firms in Egypt. Consequently, the study utilizes 312 cases to draw its conclusions.

Findings

With regard to analysis, the researcher used path analysis through AMOS and established a positive effect of TL on GI and EP but a negative on GWE. GHRM has been confirmed to predict GWE, GI and EP positively. Furthermore, GWE positively influences GI and EP among the employees of manufacturing firms in Egypt. The indirect paths establish a significant contribution of GWE in developing the links between TL and EP, GHRM, GI and EP. On the other hand, it negatively affects the link between TL and GI.

Practical implications

The study assists employers in setting green goals for their employees by offering the required knowledge, skills and training for green environmental management. The study also benefits employees’ workplace green behaviors in performance appraisals and promotions.

Originality/value

The study’s originality assists in overcoming the remaining gaps in the literature by enriching the penetration of the literature from a developing context.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the relationship between digital transformation, transformational leadership style and artificial intelligence (AI) in accounting in the context of Vietnam as an emerging market. Additionally, it examines the role of transformational leadership style as a moderator in the nexus between digital transformation and AI in accounting.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected through e-survey questionnaires distributed to Vietnamese manufacturing firms following comprehensive screening to ensure representativeness of the entire population. A final sample of 510 responses was analyzed.

Findings

Using partial least squares structural equation modeling, our findings reveal that digital transformation and a transformational leadership style positively influence AI in accounting. Furthermore, transformational leadership style demonstrates a significant moderating effect on the relationship between digital transformation and AI in accounting.

Practical implications

This study discusses the benefits of incorporating AI in accounting for managerial decision-making. It underscores the critical importance of digital transformation in contemporary accounting practices, particularly with regards to AI in accounting. Consequently, managers are encouraged to embrace digital transformation, leveraging national policies, to enhance their firm's utilization of AI in accounting. Moreover, managers should focus on developing their transformational leadership style to maximize the aforementioned outcomes.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on AI in accounting by highlighting the positive effects of digital transformation and a transformational leadership style. Additionally, our findings underscore the effectiveness of a transformational leadership style and its moderating influence. Finally, this study presents a pioneering empirical investigation that integrates transformational leadership style with AI in accounting within developing economies, specifically Vietnam.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the profound relationship between green intellectual capital (GIC) and firm performance, emphasizing the mediating role of business sustainability within food small and medium enterprises (SMEs) of Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

The study assessed manufacturing enterprises across industrial cities of Punjab using a descriptive cross-sectional survey design. The purposive sampling technique was implemented for non-probability sampling. In this research, the 287 respondents encompassed a diverse cadre of managers, non-managers and employees of food manufacturing enterprises, providing a multi-perspective insight into the role of GIC in firm performance.

Findings

The study revealed a strong correlation between GIC and firm performance. GIC significantly enhanced firm performance, with business sustainability acting as a mediator. It underscores its vital role in the environmental stewardship of manufacturing enterprises. The study contributes unique insights into how manufacturing enterprises’ managers and employees in Pakistan can leverage GIC and sustainability to anticipate and manage potential issues, build trust, bolster reputation and enhance value proposition in the sustainable market.

Originality/value

This research reinforces the importance of cultivating and capitalizing on GIC for bolstered performance while underscoring the essence of sustainable practices within the competitive landscape of Pakistani food manufacturing enterprises. It provides a novel perspective on GIC a robust tool for enhancing performance and environmental credentials.

Abstract

Purpose

The goal of this research is to examine the influence of digital leadership (DL) on adaptive capacity (ADC) of small- and medium-sized family businesses (SMFBs). Moreover, the study investigates the mediating influence of the microfoundations of dynamic capabilities represented by sensing capability (SC) and organizational agility (OA), both parallelly and sequentially.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on the dynamic capabilities view (DCV) and supporting empirical evidence, a conceptual framework is developed along with a set of hypotheses. Using survey data collected from 263 SMFBs in Oman, the hypotheses are tested using structural equation modeling through partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The analysis reveals that DL positively influences ADC, SC and OA. Additionally, SC and OA both parallelly mediate the link between DL and ADC. Finally, both SC and OA act as sequential mediators in the relationship between DL and ADC among SMFBs.

Practical implications

For practitioners, the study reveals critical role of DL in strengthening SMFBs. Family business leaders may consider the evidence and invest in leadership development programs to enhance digital competencies, enabling better SC and agility. Policymakers can offer training programs and resources, helping family businesses to build DL and dynamic capabilities essential for thriving in a competitive and evolving business environment.

Originality/value

This study makes four key contributions. First, this study expands the literature at the crossroads of the family business, digitalization, dynamic capabilities and resilience, to investigate the influence of DL on ADC. Second, the role of SC as a mediator in the above relationship, tested in the current study, seems to be overlooked in the empirical literature. Third, the findings demonstrate the mediating role of OA in relationship between DL and ADC. Finally, this appears to be the first study that presents sequential mediating role of SC and OA between DL and ADC, adding a finer-grained understanding of how influence of DL is transmitted to ADC.
