Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the reuse of plastic and fly ash (FA) to improve the soil and achieve sustainable development goals.
Design/methodology/approach
Sand from the Anzali port was reinforced with Geopet (GP) and stabilized with FA plus 3% sodium hydroxide. The GP was placed in FA-stabilized soil and the California bearing ratio (CBR), and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests were performed on samples at the optimum moisture content.
Findings
The results showed that the improvement in the optimum CBR was 174.9%. The UCS increased 15.25% and 48.65% in soil reinforced with three layers of GP plus 15% FA over those containing 10% and 5% FA, respectively. Additionally, the current analysis used response surface methodology (RSM) to investigate the impact of FA percentage, GP layers and their interaction on CBR. The results highlight the efficacy of the used RSM model, as evidenced by the significantly low p-value (<0.0001).
Originality/value
This demonstrates the suitability and effectiveness of RSM for evaluating CBR in this scientific study.

Abstract
Purpose
Despite various comparative studies in the field of cultural heritage protection in the world, there is still a significant lack of comparative research on policies related to the legal system of countries' governance. The purpose of this study is to address the comparative policies in Iran and Italy, with a particular focus on the results of the executive experiences of two different types of policies in the cities of Oroumieh (North-West of Iran) and Turin (in North-West of Italy).
Design/methodology/approach
Utilising the comparative, analytical, bibliographic and descriptive historical research methodology, which is based on the study of the local, national and international comprehensive review of regulations and policy-making of cultural heritage preservation policies in Iran and Italy. In this research, the related documents in three languages (Persian, Italian and English) have been examined to compare profoundly and comprehensively the policies and regulations adopted in these two countries to be able to analyze the national and transnational regulations and local policies in the cultural heritage sector.
Findings
In addition to many cultural similarities and numerous commonalities, especially in the multiplicity of urban cultural heritage in historical centers, the results suggest that the legislation structure in Iran is much more centralized than in Italy. Also, the findings suggest that Italy focuses on aligning its previously centralized national legislative system in line with contemporary European heritage and preservation policies.
Originality/value
The paper outlines how to use historical and cultural similarities through comparative study to benefit the experiences of two historical countries in urban heritage conservation and policy-making part despite their differences.

Abstract
Purpose
Induction heating as an energy source is a novel, recent method in extrusion-based metal additive manufacturing. The purpose of this paper is to develop an optimized coil for extrusion-based metal wire additive manufacturing. The optimized coil is so designed that uniform temperature distribution can be achieved in the extruder, achieving uniform material deposition in a semi-solid state, which is required for additive manufacturing.
Design/methodology/approach
Coil shape optimization is achieved by using arrangement of coil turns as a control variable in the form optimization process, and the objective function is to minimize the gradient in the distribution of the magnetic field to achieve uniform heating in the extruder for maintaining consistent solid and liquid fraction during material deposition. A combination of numerical solutions and geometrical optimization has been used for this study.
Findings
Experimental and simulation results reveal that the optimized induction coil produced a more uniform axial temperature distribution in the extruder, which is suitable for maintaining a uniform solid-to-liquid fraction ratio during material deposition.
Originality/value
The author has investigated the use of optimized-shaped induction coils in extrusion-based additive manufacturing. The optimized coil can achieve a more uniform temperature distribution in the extruder in comparison to the standard helical coil used in the existing process, which means optimized coil achieves a more uniform solid-to-liquid ratio during printing in comparison to existing standard coil shapes used for heating extruders and fulfils the requirement of additive manufacturing.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to propose a new deep learning technique to detect the type of material to improve automated construction quality monitoring.
Design/methodology/approach
A new data augmentation approach that has improved the model robustness against different illumination conditions and overfitting is proposed. This study uses data augmentation at test time and adds outlier samples to training set to prevent over-fitted network training. For data augmentation at test time, five segments are extracted from each sample image and fed to the network. For these images, the network outputting average values is used as the final prediction. Then, the proposed approach is evaluated on multiple deep networks used as material classifiers. The fully connected layers are removed from the end of the networks, and only convolutional layers are retained.
Findings
The proposed method is evaluated on recognizing 11 types of building materials which include 1,231 images taken from several construction sites. Each image resolution is 4,000 × 3,000. The images are captured with different illumination and camera positions. Different illumination conditions lead to trained networks that are more robust against various environmental conditions. Using VGG16 model, an accuracy of 97.35% is achieved outperforming existing approaches.
Practical implications
It is believed that the proposed method presents a new and robust tool for detecting and classifying different material types. The automated detection of material will aid to monitor the quality and see whether the right type of material has been used in the project based on contract specifications. In addition, the proposed model can be used as a guideline for performing quality control (QC) in construction projects based on project quality plan. It can also be used as an input for automated progress monitoring because the material type detection will provide a critical input for object detection.
Originality/value
Several studies have been conducted to perform quality management, but there are some issues that need to be addressed. In most previous studies, a very limited number of material types were examined. In addition, although some studies have reported high accuracy to detect material types (Bunrit et al., 2020), their accuracy is dramatically reduced when they are used to detect materials with similar texture and color. In this research, the authors propose a new method to solve the mentioned shortcomings.

Abstract
Purpose
The UNESCO recommendation under the historic urban landscapes (HUL) title and Operational Guidelines (OPG) were used to create dynamic protective boundaries to maintain the integrity and authenticity of Isfahan's heritage waterways. Accordingly, by using GIS and Isfahan urban layers, three protective zones were proposed and evaluated; the central zone, the functional zone and the visual zone.
Design/methodology/approach
Heritage waterways in historic cities are not adequately protected against the negative impacts of urban development, and there is a lack of a dynamic protective system to protect their integrity and authenticity. The problem can be observed in Isfahan, a historic Iranian city, where the boundaries of urban heritage waterways (Madi canals) are usually rigid and arbitrary. This study aims to develop a practicable paradigm for determining protection boundaries for Isfahan's Jolfa Madi, an urban heritage waterway.
Findings
Compared to the current protective boundaries, the authors found that proposed protective boundaries create a greater amount of protection space, which makes a strong connection among the ecological, historical and socio-economic characteristics of the urban context. Furthermore, the protective zones based on the HUL approach give Isfahan's urban planning policy the opportunity to consider participatory tools, financial tools and regulatory systems.
Originality/value
Many studies have emphasized a fixed-width buffer or an arbitrary distance from the urban waterway's axis (urban heritage) or its banks. Although these protections include technical conservation or setting restrictions on the adjacent buildings and blocks, studying crucial concepts such as urban dynamic, urban heritage context and producing a particular technique for protected boundaries has not been investigated. In this article three dynamic boundaries are delineated with various functions in order to provide urban heritage with dynamic preservation and sustainable development for the historic urban landscapes.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore the relationship between CEO overconfidence and earnings management examined by the discretionary accruals and if this relationship is moderated by business ethics.
Design/methodology/approach
Data from a sample of 246 European firms selected from the Stoxx Europe 600 Index between 2010 and 2022 were used to test the model using panel data and multiple regressions. This paper considered the feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) estimation for linear panel data models. A multiple regression model is used to analyze the moderating effect of business ethics on the association between CEO overconfidence and earnings management. For robustness analyses, this paper included the alternative measure of the dependent variable and independent variable.
Findings
Using discretionary accruals as a proxy for earnings management, the empirical results show a positive relationship between CEO overconfidence and earnings management. Furthermore, the results suggest that business ethics negatively moderates the relationship between CEO overconfidence and earnings management.
Practical implications
This paper makes a significant contribution to stakeholders such as investors, financial decision-makers and auditors. It underscores the importance of integrating ethical considerations into corporate governance practices for fostering accountability and transparency. In addition, it highlights the moderating role of business ethics in transforming the positive effect of CEO overconfidence on earnings management into a negative impact. This emphasizes the pivotal role of ethical norms in financial decision-making processes and extends implications to standard setters and policymakers in the regulatory domain.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to examine the moderating role of business ethics on the relationship between CEO overconfidence and earnings management in the European context. It is also the first study to document that business ethics can reduce the effect of CEOs’ biased behavior and their scope for discretion, thereby reducing the amount of earnings management. This study fills a research gap by extending the existing literature, which generally focuses on the impact of CEO overconfidence and earnings management.

Abstract
Purpose
While scholarly studies focus on the role of technology in digital transformation, an important direction of research still requires examining HR-related factors in this regard specifically. This study aims to analyze factors pertaining to human and organizational resources in the context of digital transformation within healthcare enterprises. The study examines the possible impacts of organizational energy (OE) and human resource flexibility (HRF) on digital transformation (DT). The study also seeks to investigate the influence of organizational inertia (OI) on the relationships being examined, according to the theory of change principles.
Design/methodology/approach
The empirical study used a survey method on 355 Mansoura University Hospitals employees, Egypt. The study data were analyzed using structural equations modeling with WarpPLS V. 8.0.
Findings
The results showed that all OE dimensions directly affected DT and HRF dimensions. Through HRF, OE indirectly affected DT. The study also found that all dimensions of OI negatively moderated the OE-DT and HRF-DT relationships. Based on the study's results, theoretical and practical implications were drawn.
Originality/value
This study develops a novel model to empirically investigate the quantitative relationships between OE, HRF, OI, and DT. This study provides an addition to understanding how human resources and organizational mechanisms work in technology-based experiments such as digital transformation and adds contributions in this regard to the health sector in particular.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the relationship between auditors’ work stress and client participation with audit quality (AQ).
Design/methodology/approach
This study is a descriptive-survey type and the data were collected through a questionnaire distributed online. The statistical population consisted of auditors working in audit firms in Iran and the sample was selected using a random sampling method. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data.
Findings
The findings of this study suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the negative relationship between auditors’ work stress and AQ. In addition, the results indicate that client participation in the audit process did not significantly impact AQ during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Originality/value
Given the global and widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals’ lives and work settings, this study provides an opportunity to explore the challenges auditors face concerning health protocols and their well-being during the pandemic, specifically within the context of Iran. The unique circumstances of the pandemic have placed additional pressure on auditors to navigate and address the challenges arising from COVID-19 in their workplaces. Although research on the effects of the pandemic on accounting and auditing is ongoing, this study contributes to the literature by expanding our understanding of the specific implications and circumstances faced by auditors during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Purpose
Innovative design and execution approaches are employed in infrastructure sectors and planning to enhance the integrated project delivery system, assure the sustainability of infrastructure projects, and meet the demands of the dynamic, changing environment. Delivery methods must incorporate new technologies. By combining digital technology, teamwork, and mass manufacturing, a greater degree of exceptional quality, sustainability, and resilience in the environment will be generated. As a result, a new approach does not rely on the reaction policy, but instead considers alternative scenarios and employs a simulation model to determine the best course of action.
Design/methodology/approach
In the paper, the system dynamics approach to construction management is validated in light of pertinent research. Additionally, it describes the difficulties facing the infrastructure projects' delivery system. Additionally, the strategy for system dynamics creation is described. This strategy includes a causal loop diagram, generates a stock-flow diagram, and simulates forecasts of model behavior over time. Next, the optimization model's validation process is used to create a system dynamics model for choosing the best infrastructure project delivery system project and controlling it to maximize sustainability, mass production, digital integration, and team integration. The dynamic complexity of project management is growing.
Findings
The primary goal is to present a system dynamics (SD) simulation to look at how well infrastructure projects perform in terms of choosing the best method for delivering infrastructure projects. One of the most ideal methods for delivering projects is integrated project delivery. An effective methodology for making strategic decisions on the choice of the best project delivery method. In order to enhance certain infrastructure project delivery system metrics for sustainability, mass production, digital integration, and team integration, the model included building strategy and sophisticated system dynamics simulation. According to the construction strategy, the outcomes have been satisfactory.
Originality/value
System dynamics research has been done to replicate the idea of contemporary construction in order to determine the best approach for delivering infrastructure. The government and decision-makers would benefit from understanding this research as they decide on the best delivery method for boosting the sustainability and productivity of infrastructure projects in Egypt.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to review studies on mathematical optimization of the sustainable gasoline supply chain to help decision-makers understand the current situation, the exact dimensions of the problem and the models provided in the literature. So, a more realistic mathematical optimization model can be achieved by fully covering all dimensions of the supply chain of this product.
Design/methodology/approach
To evaluate and comprehend the mathematical optimization of the sustainable gasoline supply chain research area, a systematic literature review is undertaken that covers material collection, descriptive analysis, content analysis and material evaluation steps. Finally, based on this process, 69 related articles were carefully investigated.
Findings
The results of the systematic literature review show the main areas of the published papers on mathematical optimization of sustainable gasoline supply chain problems and the gaps for future research in this field presented based on them.
Research limitations/implications
This approach is subject to limitations because the protocol of the systematic review of the research literature only included searching for the considered combination of keywords in the Scopus and ProQuest databases. Furthermore, the protocol used in this paper restricts documents to English.
Practical implications
The results have significant implications for both academicians and practitioners in this field. It can be useful for academics to comprehend the gaps and future trends in this field. Also, for practitioners, it can be useful to identify and understand the parts of the mathematical optimization model, which can help them model this problem effectively and efficiently.
Originality/value
No systematic literature review has been done in this field by considering gasoline to the best of the authors’ knowledge and delivers new facts for the future development of this field.
